Two WGA writers have most certainly not put their pencils down during the now-129-day strike against Hollywood studios. It is not against the guild’s rules to pen a… children’s book — especially one about the fight with the AMPTP.
Peter Cameron is the lead writer on “The Elves and the Shoemakers: a Grimm Little Tale of Givers and Takers.” He’s also a father who has struggled to find the right way to explain the strike to his 3-year-old son. So Cameron, whose dream “has always been” to write children’s books come retirement time (think more Roald Dahl than Dr. Seuss), dusted off his typewriter.
The picture book, a sequel to the Brothers Grimm’s “The Elves and the Shoemaker,” was co-written by a second WGA member with what Cameron called “priceless input” from a third. They prefer to remain anonymous; together, the group goes by “the elves.

This week’s episode of The Mandalorian sent Din Djarin on a seemingly simple rendezvous mission, but things quickly started to go south for the bounty hunter and his sidekick, Baby Yoda.
After returning from the dragon hunt, Mando found another way to contact his kind through the engineer Peli Motto. This involved a quest that required the duo to take a frog-like creature and her offspring to another planet in the sector, where she would supposedly reunite with her husband. But as you know, things aren’t nearly as easy as they seem when it comes to Djarin and the Child. And so, one thing led to another and the three of them crash-landed on an icy planet. There, the bounty hunter had ample opportunity to showcase his range of unique survival skills, and with the help of two Rebel X-wing pilots, they managed to pull through the ordeal.

The portrayal of Dragons has generally been a negative one. With the exception of films like How to Train Your Dragon or Puff the Magic Dragon, when we see a dragon on film or in a book, we get images of fire breathing monsters who are capable of death and destruction. But there’s an artist out there who wants to put all of those stereotypes to bed. Brian Kesinger has been drawing the lighter side of dragons and it’s worth taking a look. Here’s what Brian had to say: As a kid of the 80’s, dragons have always inspired me.

With superheroes dominating the box office and ruling the airwaves these days, it comes as no surprise that a fair percentage of people being exposed to such characters via live action offerings will become curious and check out the source material. What may intimidate them, however, is where to start reading due to years of comic book continuity having been piled up.
Something I’ve often done is recommend that people check out their local libraries, where they can sample a multitude of definitive graphic novels for free. And, should you elect to do so, you’ll likely find one of several Marvel series to be recently recognized by the Young Adult Library Services Association (Yalsa) such as Star Wars, All-New Wolverine or The Vision.

Artist Brian Kesinger is back with a new set of Calvin & Hobbes-inspired Star Wars: The Force Awakens art. This stuff has been a big hit online, and one of my favorite pieces so far is included in this new set. It features Kylo Ren rummaging through his mom’s closet, and in it he finds her slave outfit that Jabba/George Lucas made her wear. This is a moment that would scar little Kylo for life. I’ve includes a few other pieces that Kesinger created that I thought were worth sharing, some of which aren’t Star Wars-related, but they're still cool.
You can check out all of the previous Calvin & Hobbes art that we've posted here, here, here, and here.

Calvin and Hobbes occupy a special place since Bill Watterson released the first four panel strip in 1985. But despite a fervent fan base, Watterson has stood by his convictions to never license the character, not that is ever stopped the bootleggers — looking at you, creators of “Calving peeing on the Ford logo” stickers — or fan art creations. Brian Kesinger falls into the latter category. By day, Kesinger is a story artist at Walt Disney animation studios and an artist for Marvel Comics (Groot). By night, he’s been creating the cutest collection of Star Wars/Calvin and Hobbes art you’ll ever see. Perfectly capturing the essence of childlike mischief and vivid imagination of the original comic, Kesinger makes Rey, Finn, Poe, and even Kylo Ren into adorable six-year-olds. The only problem? There’s not enough of them! #Rey and #bb8 love sledding down the dunes of jakku! #mashup #calvinandhobbes...

Walt Disney Animation Studios and Marvel Comics artist Brian Kesinger was inspired by Star Wars: The Force Awakens to create a series of fantastic fan art based on the style of Bill Watterson's classic Calvin & Hobbes comic strip. He's been posting this art on his Twitter account, so if you like what you see you might want to follow him. He has a lot of great work worth checking out.

Everyone's favorite sentient space-tree will be getting his own comic. Marvel has hired Jeff Loveness (a comedy writer for Jimmy Kimmel Live!) and Brian Kesinger (of Disney) to draw Groot his own comic. According to Marvel's logline, the comic will follow Groot after he gets separated from his partner, Rocket Raccoon, and promises "Explosions, Space Sharks, Aliens, And Intergalactic Hitchiking." Loveness told Mashable, "It's a challenge, and also part of the fun. Being a comedy writer on TV, you make your living on words and turns of phrase and jokes. So with Groot you've gotta dig deep and find a lot of physical comedy." Aww, our little sapling is all grown up! Take a look at the cover:...

La-based illustrator, animator, and artist Brian Kesinger has just released his first book, Walking Your Octopus: A Guide to the Domesticated Cephalopod. I first came across Brian a few years ago when I was the judge for the WeLoveFine steampunk tee shirt art contest, where he submitted “Walkies for Otto”. He won that contest and thus started the Internet’s love affair with his adorable characters Otto and Victoria. Since then, Otto and Victoria have grown to encompass books, prints, shirts, and more. Brian was good enough to sit down with me for an interview on his new book, upcoming projects, and the very important question of “why the octopus?”

From executive producer Eli Roth (Cabin Fever) and based on Brian McGreevy's novel of the same name, Netflix's Hemlock Grove is a riveting one-hour murder mystery series that revolves around the residents of a former Pennsylvania steel town. When 17-year-old Brooke Bluebell is brutally murdered, any of Hemlock's peculiar inhabitants-or killer creatures-could be suspects.

Jennifer Yuh Nelson's "Kung Fu Panda 2" dominated the Annie Awards nominations, but the International Animated Film Society decided to give its highest honor -- the Best Animated Feature award -- to Gore Verbinski's "Rango." Both films are from DreamWorks Animation and they still have to duke it out at the upcoming Oscars in the Best Animated Feature Film category.

I'm a huge fan of animation, animated films are getting better and better. Not only is the look and animation getting ridiculously awesome, but I find that many of these animated films actually have incredibly good stories. Not all of them are good though, for example, Cars 2 and Rio sucked. It will be interesting to see who ends up taking home the awards this year. Out of the movies on the list that I've seen and liked we have Puss in Boots, Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2. I guess it's no surprises that Kung Fu Panda 2 is leading the nominations with 9. Check out the list and let us know what your favorite animated movies of the year are!

I don't put much stock in the Annie Awards and neither does Disney after withdrawing from the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood back in 2010. I have personally never found them to be a good judge of quality and as such don't pay them any particular attention, though I will pass along the information as they have announced their 2011 nominees with Dreamworks' Kung Fu Panda 2 leading the way with 12 nominations, followed by Puss in Boots and Rango each with nine. Of course, while Disney has withdrawn from the Annies that doesn't mean they aren't considered for the awards as Cars 2, Gnomeo and Juliet and Winnie the Pooh are among the nominees. Last year How to Train Your Dragon reigned supreme over Toy Story 3 and I wouldn't be surprised to see Kung Fu Panda 2 take home plenty of hardware, following in the footsteps of its predecessor, which beat out...
