Wendy Bednarz’s “Yellow Bus,” which follows a mother’s quest for justice after suffering an unthinkable tragedy, won the prize for best film at the Joburg Film Festival during an award ceremony Saturday night at the Sandton Convention Center in Johannesburg.
The film, which world premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, is set in an unnamed Arabian Gulf country and follows an Indian family that endures a tragedy when their daughter is neglected on a school bus in the sweltering desert heat. Consumed by grief, mother Anada (Tannishtha Chatterjee) sets out to find the truth about who is accountable.
In its citation for the prize-winning film, the jury noted: “This film spoke to the core challenges faced by marginalized immigrants. The protagonist’s nuanced performance brought to light the resilience and determination needed when an individual faces a social-political system.”
Bednarz was not in attendance to accept the award.

Director Devashish Makhija slowly ramps up the tension with a sharp eye for oppressive realism and social satire as a father tries to out run his oppressors in this gritty thriller
Where many thrillers programmatically crank up tension with every scene and every beat, Devashish Makhija’s third feature feels different; this manhunt is weighed down by an almost agonised oppressiveness. Joram’s protagonist Dasru (Manoj Bajpayee) is barely able to choose a course of action until compelled out of desperation, and his police pursuer Ratnakar (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub) is not much better. There’s no escape in this pressure cooker from omnipresent societal exploitation and cynicism – with only Makhija’s compassion for the marginalised to compensate.
A tattooed member of the “scheduled tribes” from the eastern state of Jharkhand, Dasru lives in exile as a Mumbai labourer. When Phulo Karma (Smita Tambe), a tribal leader from the same region,...

What’s Good: When you’ve Manoj Bajpayee listed in the cast, asking what’s good gets kind of redundant
What’s Bad: This wouldn’t get much attention to be ignored as yet another ‘festival film’ which talks about the systematic imbalance, it’s more than that
Loo Break: This will keep you and your pants hooked till the end
Watch or Not?: Yes, to witness Manoj Bajpayee’s unmatched range

Actress Tannishtha Chatterjee, who is known for films like ‘Parched’ and ‘Angry Indian Goddesses’, and is currently awaiting the release of ‘The Storyteller’ and ‘Joram’, has shared that for her travelling in the ‘Kaali Peeli’ taxis of Mumbai was very liberating.
Mumbai’s ‘Kaali-Peeli’ taxis, which have been a symbol of the city for decades, have gone off the roads as per a mandate by the city’s transport department. This comes after the retirement of the legendary red double-decker diesel buses operated by Best which have defined Mumbai’s landscape for many years.
Recollecting her fondest memory, Tannishtha said: “When I first came to Mumbai, I used the Kaali Peeli taxi a lot as I stayed in Kemp’s corner, back in 2005. I have very fond memories of the Kaali-Peeli taxi because the experience in Mumbai was so different for me.”

A Tribal Villager
Joram is an authentically crafted, brutal and raw depiction of the lives of tribal people in India. It is an eye-opening and important piece of cinema that will tug at the viewer’s emotions. Director Devashish Makhija has crafted a film that is relentless in its exposé of various socio-economic issues including political landscape, gentrification, mining, deforestation, etc. This is as realistic as any film can ever get to in the portrayal of the cruelty human beings dish on other human beings in the name of caste and the social hierarchy of the so-called people who aim to use the ‘Power of Status’ to do as they please. The dog-eat-dog mentality is where anyone will do anything to get ahead in life, to make a statement, to cover up mistakes and where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

The film, which premiered at Rotterdam earlier this year, is in Busan’s A Window on Asian Cinema strand. Eminent actor Manoj Bajpayee, who previously starred in Makhija’s 2016 short “Taandav” and played the title role in “Bhonsle,” plays Dasru, a tribal migrant worker in Mumbai whose past catches up with him and he must flee with his infant daughter Joram. It's a sweltering day on the Arabian peninsula, but Ananda's (Tannishtha Chatterjee) family is happy. Ananda and her husband Gagan (Amit Sial) can barely keep their hands off each other, smiling at one another like newlyweds. Ananda lovingly and delicately prepares pomegranate for her two daughters' school lunches, six-year-old Anju (Kshethra Mithun) and older sister Ravina (Aarushi Laud). Ananda walks her kids to the bus, and waves excitedly as they drive away, the joy reciprocated in her daughter's faces.
But this gleeful day is about to come crashing down around them. Anju has fallen asleep on the school bus, and a series of small, unfortunate decisions compound, and Anju is left on the bus while the rest of the kids go to school. In the suffocating heat, Anju gets heat asphyxiation and dies. Ananda and Gagan are called into the school, believing their daughter has wet herself again. But...

Ananda (Tannishtha Chatterjee) says it all towards the end of Wendy Bednarz’s feature debut Yellow Bus: “There were so many chances to save her life.” That’s the message at the center of its tragedy. Not justice, but acknowledgement. Because while it’s easy to blame anyone whose presence touched a senseless and avoidable death, few (if any) are actual murderers. Grief has a tendency of blinding us from this fact, though. Even when the person we blame most is ourselves.
Ananda, conversely, wants justice. She saw the way the school bus door jammed after Ravina (Aarushi Laud) and Anju (Kshethra Mithun) boarded and how it didn’t when she’s supposedly shown the same bus again after the latter girl was left inside to die of hyperthermia. She sees the obvious guilt in the academy principal’s (Kinda Alloush’s Mira) eyes when attempting to give Ananda...

A Mother’s Quest for Justice in the Arabian Gulf Takes Centerstage in Toronto Selection ‘Yellow Bus’
A mother’s quest for justice is the fulcrum around which Toronto Film Festival U.A.E. selection “Yellow Bus” revolves.
Set in an unnamed Arabian Gulf country, “Yellow Bus” follows an Indian family that endures a tragedy when their daughter is neglected on a school bus in the sweltering desert heat. Consumed by grief, mother Anada (Tannishtha Chatterjee), sets out to find the truth about who is accountable.
The film is the feature directorial debut of American Wendy Bednarz who teaches film in the Middle East. It is inspired by multiple real-life incidents of neglect across the region, which stayed with Bednarz – a mother herself – and she decided to make a film on the subject. The filmmaker strove to be as authentic as possible.
“Even before I decided to make the film, I really questioned my own positionality in terms of, who am I to actually make this film...

Rotterdam Competition Title ‘Joram’ Addresses Enforced Development Malaise in Survival Thriller Form
Throughout his career, Indian filmmaker Devashish Makhija has been a chronicler of social inequities and “Joram” continues the trajectory.
Makhija’s short films examine subjects as varied as misogyny, corruption, land grab and patriarchy. Amongst his features, “Ajji” (2017) tackles rape and its aftermath, while “Bhonsle” (2018) looks at a host of subjects including loneliness, social justice and the plight of the migrant worker.
With “Joram,” Makhija returns to themes explored in his debut feature “Oonga” (2013). Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub plays Ratnakar, the weary Mumbai cop in pursuit of Dasru. Also in the mix is sinister tribal lawmaker Phulo Karma, played by Smita Tambe (Netflix series “Sacred Games”).

Ananth Narayan Mahadevan’s Busan International Film Festival selection “The Storyteller,” based on a short story by Oscar-winning Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray, isn’t “just another homage” to the late master.
Film enthusiast Tapobrati Das Sammaddar recommended Ray’s story “Golpo Boliye Tarini Khuro” to Mahadevan, who was “instantly fascinated by the layered social satire.” The story follows an unpublished Bengali storyteller who answers a help ad from a Gujarati businessman who suffers from insomnia, and there is a twist in the tale.
Samaddar translated the story and Kireet Khurana (“T for Taj Mahal”) and Mahadevan developed it into a screenplay that was a faithful adaptation of the original. Mahadevan, who cites Ray’s “Charulata” and “Pather Panchali” as influences, says that the choice of film grammar was the tricky part of the shoot.
