10 TV Shows That Accurately Capture The Horrors Of War
Image
There are many war movies that military experts praise for realism. However, just as many TV shows do an excellent job of touching upon the true cost of war. Conversely, since the realities of war are so intense, there are some series that omit the harsher aspects. The toll war takes on the psyches of the soldiers and, most prominently, how many civilian lives are lost are at the forefront of many of these narratives. By centering on the individual experiences of people paying the everyday price of war, the realities feel more immediate and impossible to ignore.

Many of these series feature the best TV show battle scenes, as the violence of infamous clashes is frequently portrayed on television. However, it's not just the big bombastic moments that make these projects memorable. The quieter, more intimately devastating moments typically hit the hardest in these narratives, as this is more...

‘Nutcrackers’ TIFF Red Carpet Premiere Photos: Ben Stiller & More
Image
The premiere of Nutcrackers starring Ben Stiller and Linda Cardellini kicked of the 2024 Toronto Film Festival Thursday night, with several other actors in attendance on the red carpet.

The film centers Stiller’s Mike, a no-nonsense workaholic who takes over caregiving for his orphaned nephews that challenge his straig-laced living style. Working to find them a new home after their parents die in a car accident, Mike is forced to adjust to farm life before he realizes he may find a home with his nephews. This marks Stiller’s first movie role in seven years following 2017’s The Meyerowitz Stories and Brad’s Status. In between those and Nutcrackers, Stiller has spent time directing and producing 2018’s miniseries Escape at Dannemora and Apple’s sci-fi thriller show Severance, which has a second season arriving in January 2025.

Co-head of Rivulet Films, the financial backer of the TIFF Opener Rob Paris described the...

‘All the Light We Cannot See’ could finally win Hugh Laurie that elusive Emmy
Image
Hugh Laurie has never won an Emmy. That seems like an egregious oversight on behalf of TV academy voters, considering the British actor starred as one of the best TV characters of this century in “House.” Still, 10 nominations (we’ll get to those later) and zero wins.

He could finally break that losing streak with Netflix’s “All the Light We Cannot See.” Adapted from Anthony Doerr‘s 2014 novel of the same name, written by Steven Knight, and directed by Shawn Levy, this miniseries depicts the lives of two teenagers during WWII — one a blind French girl and the other a German boy forced to fight for the Nazi regime. Laurie features as Uncle Étienne, a reclusive, agoraphobic WWI veteran suffering from Ptsd. Laurie has always been a classy performer and he again brings a lot of heart, warmth, and intelligence here to this role, as noted by several critics.

From ‘We Were the Lucky Ones’ to ‘Masters of the Air,’ Inside the Rise of World War II TV Shows
Image
When Georgia Hunter first pitched her 2017 book, “We Were the Lucky Ones,” about her Polish ancestors’ fight for survival during the Holocaust, she was told World War II literature was a “saturated” market. This wasn’t meant to dissuade her from pushing forward with their harrowing story, but rather acknowledge that there is never a shortage of novels, films and series trying to reckon with the everlasting wounds of the war.

It was no different when Hunter and producers Thomas Kail and Erica Lipez adapted the book into Hulu’s eight-part limited series, which premiered in March.

“We knew with this kind of story in particular, you have to go beyond the logline,” Lipez tells Variety. “It was so much about making sure people heard the full story, particularly when we were pitching it. As someone who thought they had a really good Holocaust education, what I knew immediately upon...

From ‘The Crown’ to ‘Franklin,’ How France Has Become TV’s New Sought-After Backdrop
Image
France has never had trouble getting people to fall in love with its many pleasures: the Eiffel Tower, the Palace of Versailles, the Louvre, and the island majesty of Mont Saint-Michel. It sells itself, which is probably why it is such a sought-after backdrop for television series.

But in the last year, France has been shown even more love than usual, as more than half a dozen shows, all vying for Emmy attention this season, explored the country through the ages. And no, this wasn’t some elaborate promotion for the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

From the 1600s to the modern day to a post-zombie apocalypse future, no cultural stone went unturned on TV this year, giving viewers even more reason to book their next (hopefully zombie-free) vacation.

This list of shows doesn’t even include the second seasons of Netflix’s teen romance “Heartstopper” (eligible for Children’s...

Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann (‘All the Light We Cannot See’ casting directors) on the challenge of casting a blind person in a leading role: ‘It’s never been done’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockman have never had an assignment like the one they faced with “All the Light They Cannot See,” the four-part Netflix wartime limited series that’s adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel from author Anthony Doerr. The UK-based casting directors were tasked with finding a pair of blind actors to play the dual lead role of Marie-Laure LeBlanc, a blind French girl. Executive producer and director Shawn Levy was insistent that they go for strict authenticity in casting. And Netflix was very much onboard. It tells you everything you need to know about partners Bevan and Brockman that hey viewed this incredibly difficult challenge as “a hugely appealing” thing, in Bevan’s words. “Casting a blind person in a leading role…well, it’s never been done before,” Bevan adds. “But that was very much part of the appeal.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress
Image
Before making your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress, take a tour of our photo gallery that highlights the leading contenders. Currently in the frontrunner position is Jodie Foster (“True Detective: Night Country”), who has yet to even be nominated for an acting Emmy at this point in her 55-year career.

Foster would be the first actress to receive an Emmy mention for “True Detective,” which has produced four seasons over the past decade. Its previous three acting notices went to inaugural season costars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey (who competed for Best Drama Actor in 2014) and third season lead Mahershala Ali (2019).

Hoping to soon achieve second wins in this category are Claire Danes (“Full Circle”; formerly of “Temple Grandin”), Kate Winslet (“The Regime”; “Mildred Pierce” and “Mare of Easttown”), Julianne Moore (“Mary & George”; “Game Change”), and Nicole Kidman (“Expats”; “Big Little Lies”). Also in the...

Steven Knight (‘All the Light We Cannot See’ writer) on the challenge of ‘adapting something that’s already so good’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
Steven Knight has been round the block, and the British writer-creator of the iconic series “Peaky Blinders” knew when he was hired to adapt the novel “All the Light We Cannot See” as a four-part Netflix limited series that the primary challenge would essentially be to avoid trying to fix something that wasn’t broken. The 2014 book by author Anthony Doerr had not only been a runaway bestseller but also earned Doerr the Pulitzer Prize, and Knight had no intention of compromising its brilliance while writing the series. “It wasn’t ever a thought in my head to say, ‘Ok, I’m going to impose myself on this’,” he says. “It was actually quite the opposite. For me, as far as possible, it was more, ‘Let’s let this horse ride, let it run the way it is, where you feel as if you need to do something, then do something…...

Unicef USA Announces Aria Mia Loberti as Newest Ambassador
Image
Unicef USA has appointed star of Netflix’s adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel All the Light We Cannot See, Aria Mia Loberti, as the organization’s newest Ambassador.

The announcement comes while Loberti is advocating on Capitol Hill for equitable access to education and recognition of how the climate crisis disproportionately impacts women and girls.

Loberti, a lifelong activist, began working with Unicef USA in 2022. In addition to traveling with Unicef to Kosovo to see the organization’s work firsthand, she has supported Unicef USA’s efforts to pass the Read Act Reauthorization in the United States as well as used her platform to amplify the voices of youth changemakers.

“When I decided to explore acting, I knew that I wanted my journey to be grounded in purpose,” said Loberti. “Working with Unicef USA, having the honor of being named the newest Ambassador and being trusted with the...

The Spiderwick Chronicles TV Review
Image
Plot: The Grace family moves from Brooklyn, New York, to their ancestral home in Henson, Michigan, the Spiderwick Estate. Helen makes the move with her 15-year-old fraternal twin boys, Jared and Simon, and her older daughter, Mallory. Shortly after moving to the Spiderwick Estate, Jared discovers a boggart and realizes that magical creatures are real! The only one to believe him is his great-aunt Lucinda, who implores Jared to find the pages of her father’s field guide to magical creatures and protect them from the murderous Ogre, Mulgarath.

Review: Based on the popular young adult novel series of the same name, The Spiderwick Chronicles comes a decade-and-a-half after Paramount Pictures’ big-screen adaptation was a moderate success at the box office and with critics. Taking a cue from other YA films like A Series of Unfortunate Events, Harry Potter, and other similar early 21st-century franchises, The Spiderwick Chronicles books combines fantasy,...

The 50 Best TV Shows of 2023
Image
Whether it’s the conclusion of juggernaut hits or new shows that sparked conversation, the television medium delivered in 2023.

The anticipated adaptation of “Daisy Jones & the Six” kept us dancing (and crying) in the spring, while the brilliantly devastating conclusion of “Succession” left us catching our breath in May. “The Last of Us” reminded us of the real emotional stakes of a zombie apocalypse, and Netflix’s “Beef” showed us the depths a person can go to when seeking retribution.

The historic Hollywood double strikes delayed the returns of our favorite broadcast series in the fall, but streaming series like “The Buccaneers” and “The Curse,” and linear hits like “The Golden Bachelor” and “Fargo” kept us glued to our screens this year.

Check out TheWrap’s staff picks for the best TV shows of 2023 below.

Shawn Levy On ‘All The Light’ Golden Globe Nom, The “Gift” Of ‘Stranger Things’ & The Push To Make ‘Deadpool 3’ “The Best Movie Possible”
Image
After seeing his acclaimed Netflix series All the Light We Cannot See secure a Golden Globe nomination on Monday morning, director-ep Shawn Levy spoke with Deadline about his forthcoming Deadpool threequel and Stranger Things‘ final season, as well as his work on the aforementioned historical drama.

When Levy got the call from his wife about the nomination, he was in the middle of his shoot day in London for Deadpool 3, which sees Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth share the screen with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Coming out of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of the summer, he said, the team was “excited, coiled and ready to pounce” on the pic and ready it for theatrical release on July 26, 2024.

“We’re happily back at work, and now that we know it’s coming out next summer, we are working our asses off to make the best movie possible,” Levy said,...

Louis Hofmann (‘All the Light We Cannot See’) on making these films to avoid Nazism from happening again [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
Louis Hofmann is an actor who has a certain Aryan look. There’s no getting around it. He’s used it to find work playing Nazis. “I’ve portrayed quite a few Nazi characters,” the German-born actor says, “which doesn’t mean they’re all the same. I guess it’s very important to remind ourselves of what has happened and to keep making these films to avoid it happening again.” Hoffman is at it again portraying Werner Pfennig, a brilliant German teenager who is reluctantly compelled to assist the Nazi cause during World War II due to his technical skill with radios in “All the Light We Cannot See,” the four-part Netflix adaptation of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel from Anthony Doerr. “I’m glad you sympathize with that human, whatever the uniform that he had to put on.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Aria Mia Loberti (‘All the Light We Cannot See’): ‘I never allowed myself to dream about this’ [Exclusive Video Interview]

Aria Mia Loberti was, by any measure, an incredibly high achiever, particularly for someone legally blind. As a triple major at the University of Rhode Island, she was graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 2020. She received a Fulbright Scholarship who earned her master’s degree in the UK. And she was studying for her PhD two years ago at Penn State. Yet she felt unfulfilled. “I was just unhappy, and I didn’t really know why,” she admits. “I’d spent my whole life fighting for my education, and I was literally as far as you could go at the top and doing really well. But I felt like I was living someone else’s life, like I didn’t know what I was supposed to do with my life, and I was just kind of going through the motions. I didn’t know what I was...

All The Light We Cannot See's Louis Hofmann Already Starred In One Of Netflix's Most Underrated Shows
Image
All the Light We Cannot See has received negative reviews, but the cast, including Louis Hofmann, has been recognized as a positive element. Hofmann's role in All the Light We Cannot See showcases the fine balance between experienced and youthful actors. Hofmann previously starred as Jonas in Netflix's Dark, a critically acclaimed science-fiction series that didn't receive as much praise as it deserved.

Even though Louis Hofmann is gaining more attention for his role as German soldier Werner Pfennig in All the Light We Cannot See, he has already starred in another hit Netflix show. Though the 2023 series has seen success the streaming service's trending charts, the reception to the adaptation hasn't been as great as anticipated. The show has primarily received negative reviews from critics, with All the Light We Cannot See's Rotten Tomatoes score being the lowest from a Netflix show in 2023. However, the cast, including Hofmann,...

Ed Skrein's Nazi Role In All The Light We Cannot See Flips A Key WW2 Role From 2019
Image
Ed Skrein plays a Nazi officer in the Netflix limited series "All the Light We Cannot See" and previously played a US Navy bomber pilot in the movie "Midway." Skrein's character in "All the Light We Cannot See," Rudolf Seidler, recruits a skilled radio technician named Werner to join the Nazi army during World War II. While Skrein's character in "Midway" is based on a real person, his character in "All the Light We Cannot See" is fictional, although the show is set during World War II.

Ed Skrein appears briefly in All the Light We Cannot See, and the actor plays a Nazi officer, which is a very different role from his character in a World War II movie that was released in 2019. The 2023 Netflix limited series revolves around a young man and woman — Marie-Laure LeBlanc and Werner Pfennig, played by Aria Mia Loberti and Louis Hofmann, respectively — living...

"All the Light We Cannot See" on Netflix uses the classical song "Clair de lune" by Claude Debussy as a significant piece of music in the show. The song holds personal meaning for the characters Marie-Laure and Werner and symbolizes hope in a difficult time. Music plays an important role in All the Light We Cannot See on Netflix, and one classical song, in particular, stands out in the television show's four episodes. The 2023 limited series is based on Anthony Doerr's 2014 war novel of the same name, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2015 and was a success among critics and readers alike. Image
Warning: This post contains spoilers for All the Light We Cannot See, both the book and show!

Director Shawn Levy explains the changes made to All the Light We Cannot See's ending, including a more substantial connection between Marie-Laure and Werner, and an open-ended, hopeful conclusion. The ending of the Netflix miniseries differs from the novel by not solidifying the futures of Marie-Laure and Werner and omitting the epilogue details about Werner's sister finding Marie-Laure. Despite criticism from some fans of the novel, Levy and the creative team wanted to convey a message of hope amidst the loss and grief in the story.

Shawn Levy Talks Why He Wanted to Direct ‘All the Light We Cannot See’: “Unlike Anything I’ve Ever Made”
Image
Shawn Levy opens up about why he felt drawn to direct Netflix’s new miniseries All the Light We Cannot See.

The Steven Knight-created four-episode series, adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name by Anthony Doerr, follows Marie-Laure, a blind French teen, who forms an unlikely relationship with a German soldier, Werner, after she takes refuge from World War II in her uncle’s town in France.

“When I read the first draft of the first episode of the adaptation, my plan was to produce the show, maybe direct an episode,” Levy told People magazine in a recent interview. “But after I read it, I knew I needed to do it all myself.”

Though the series is unlike the usual genre he goes for, he explained, “I loved the book, I loved the adaptation. And it connected to my prior work in that it is fundamentally — and unabashedly — emotional,...

Aria Mia Loberti in All the Light We Cannot See (2023)
Why the ‘All the Light We Cannot See’ Ending Is Different From the Book
Aria Mia Loberti in All the Light We Cannot See (2023)
Warning! This post contains major spoilers for the final two episodes and ending of “All the Light We Cannot See.”

Shawn Levy and Steven Knight’s Netflix adaptation “All the Light We Cannot See” ends quite differently for a few key characters than source material Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.

The four-part limited series tells a split story of Marie-Laure LeBlanc (Aria Mia Loberti), a young blind, French girl who moves with her father to a small seaside town in France when the Germans take over the country, and Werner Pfennig (Louis Hoffman) an unwilling Nazi soldier whose job is to track down illegal radio broadcasts that the French use to codify messages to the United States and other Allied countries during World War II. The two main characters, who exist on opposing sides of a historical tragedy, actually have a lot in common thanks to a radio broadcast they listened to as children,...

Adapted from Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Netflix’s limited series “All the Light We Cannot See” sets two unlikely kindred spirits on a collision course as World War II begins in France when Germany occupied the country. Marie-Laure LeBlanc (Aria Mia Loberti) and Werner Pfennig (Louis Hoffman) share curiosity and empathy, which translates across their opposing countries and positions in the war. Werner’s skill for fixing and translating radios leads him to a high position in the Nazi effort to decode secret broadcasts that their targets might send. Marie-Laure herself becomes a broadcaster after her father moves her to her uncle’s home in a small, seaside French town.

What Is the Sea of Flames in 'All the Light We Cannot See'?
Image
Netflix's World War II-era miniseries All the Light We Cannot See, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Anthony Doerr, weaves together several disparate stories over the course of four episodes. Marie-Laure LeBlanc (Aria Mia Loberti), Werner Pfennig (Louis Hofmann), and the Nazi Sergeant Major Reinhold von Rumpel (Lars Eidinger) are destined to clash over the series' MacGuffin, a legendary blue diamond called the Sea of Flames. Marie-Laure inherited the Sea of Flames from her father Daniel (Mark Ruffalo) and refuses to surrender it into the hands of the determined — and dying — von Rumpel, even if it means her own death. Why is this jewel so important? What role does it play in All the Light We Cannot See, and was the Sea of Flames inspired by a real-life artifact?...

All The Light We Cannot See's 10 Biggest Book Changes
Image
Spoilers ahead for both the show and book versions of All the Light We Cannot See, including the endings.

Netflix's adaptation of All the Light We Cannot See brings new characters and a larger cast to the story, adding depth to the primary characters. The miniseries takes a more violent approach to Werner's discovery of Marie, diverging from the more peaceful version in the novel. Hugh Laurie's Etienne has a bigger role in the miniseries as a member of the French resistance, becoming a more important figure in Marie's life.

Netflix's adaption of All the Light We Cannot See makes some pretty big changes in its leap from book to screen. The source material, a 2014 novel of the same name by Anthony Doerr, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and spent over 200 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list. Needless to say, a book-to-screen adaptation was inevitable.

New WW2 Show's Rotten Tomatoes Score Is One Of Netflix's Lowest Of 2023
Image
All the Light We Cannot See has received a low Rotten Tomatoes score of 24%, making it one of Netflix's worst shows of 2023. Critics have criticized the show for its tonal inconsistency, blending serious and silly elements awkwardly. Despite the low critical score, the show has a stronger audience score of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes and is expected to be popular among viewers.

All the Light We Cannot See's Rotten Tomatoes score is one of Netflix's lowest of 2023. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Anthony Doerr, developed by Peaky Blinders' Steven Knight, and directed by Stranger Things' Shawn Levy, the four-part limited series follows a blind French teenager and German soldier whose paths collide in Nazi-occupied France as they attempt to survive the death and destruction of World War II. Where Was All The Light We Cannot See Filmed? Saint-Malo Filming Locations Explained
Image
The Netflix limited series "All the Light We Cannot See" is based on the war novel by Anthony Doerr and was filmed in various locations in Europe. One of the most important filming locations is Saint-Malo, France, which plays a significant role in the story and captures the essence of the war. Budapest, Hungary, was used as a replacement for Paris in the show, possibly due to cost or its ability to convey the 1940s European setting. Villefranche-de-Rouergue, France, was also used for exterior shots of Saint-Malo.

The Netflix limited series All the Light We Cannot See tells the story of two teenagers living through World War II in Europe, and the show was filmed in numerous locations on the continent. Aria Mia Loberti in All the Light We Cannot See (2023)
‘All the Light We Cannot See’ Review: Netflix Limited Series Fails to Capture Pulitzer-Winning Novel’s Essence
Aria Mia Loberti in All the Light We Cannot See (2023)
Were one to go into “All the Light We Cannot See” totally cold — drawn to the four-part limited series, say, purely by its placement atop Netflix’s home page — it would be impossible to discern that it was based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel celebrated for its lyricism and profundity.

The dialogue here is pedestrian. The lead character, blind French teenager Marie-Laure LeBlanc (screen newcomer Aria Mia Loberti), escapes the German invasion of Paris in World War II with her father, Daniel (Mark Ruffalo). They seek refuge in the French port city of Saint-Malo. Yet throughout the journey, and the limited series, our Gallic heroine and Papa LeBlanc speak English with British accents.

The series’ wartime visuals are dark and obviously CG-enhanced. More practical effects include perfectly contained fires placed in strategic spots to indicate — along with James Newton Howard’s overwrought score — that a neighborhood has been bombed.

This lack of realism,...
