Hell on Wheels, Season 4, Episode 13, “Further West”
Written by John Wirth and John Romano
Directed by Adam Davidson
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
“I’m going home, Doc”
“Home? This is your home”
Hell on Wheels’ fourth season has been complicated. While mostly disappointing, it has featured moments of great emotional depth and viewers have had to say goodbye to Elam (Common) and Ruth (Kasha Kropinski) in episodes that were deeply effecting and have changed the course of the show and its main character Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) indefinitely.
With nothing seemingly tying him to Cheyenne, and Ruth’s insistence that he go to his wife and son and make it right, Cullen quits his job on the railroad. It’s an odd choice, considering everything he’s given up for it, what and who he has lost. Either he’s running from his guilt and the haunting...

Spoiler alert: The Nov. 15 episode of AMC's Hell on Wheels, "Thirteen Steps," found preacher Ruth (Kasha Kropinski) determined to see herself hanged for murdering Sidney Snow, the man who'd killed her son, Ezra, despite the best efforts of Cullen (Anson Mount) to get her to accept a pardon. The resulting jail conversations between the two—beautifully written, lit, staged, and acted—are some of the best scenes of the series. Kropinski spoke to EW about Ruth's fate and relationship with Cullen, and what it's like to film a scene standing atop a trap door.

Though it has never garnered the ratings or awards clout of dramas like Breaking Bad or Mad Men, AMC’s transcontinental railroad drama Hell on Wheels has proven a reliable performer for the network throughout its four-season run. Now, AMC has opted to give the Anson Mount-led series the same treatment as those aforementioned prestige dramas, renewing it for a fifth and final season of 14 episodes, which will be split across the summers of 2015 and 2016.
The first seven episodes of Hell on Wheels‘ final ride will arrive next summer, at which point the show will break until the summer of 2016.
Given that AMC moved Hell on Wheels to Saturday nights (considered by many to be a graveyard slot) for its third season, there were those who didn’t expect the series to live nearly as long as it has. However, the drama’s fans followed it to Saturday, establishing...

Written by Michael C. Martin and Jimmy Mero
Directed by Seith Mann
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
“Congratulations, you ain’t dead”
AMC recently announced that next year’s season five of Hell on Wheels will be its last. And after this uneven fourth season, maybe it’s time. Everything that needs to be said has, and Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) our fascinating lead who has grown from a revenge-hungry former soldier into a dangerously driven man with a new wife and child. We have seen him loose and win back so much of his life that the time has come for us to say goodbye to this richly complex man.
Season four has had some great episodes, like the premiere, “The Elusive Eden”, “Elam Ferguson”, and its midseason finale, “Return to Hell”. But for the most part, the season has...

Hell on Wheels, Season 4, Episode 9, “Two Trains”
Written by Bruce Marshall Romans
Directed by Marvin Rush
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
“I looked into his eyes and saw a wickedness that has yet to be unleashed”
Hell on Wheels has had a difficult fourth season. There have been excellent episodes like “Elam Ferguson” and the introduction of brilliant new characters like Campbell (Jake Weber), but with only four episodes left in the season it seems like Hell on Wheels has no real direction. Strong acting and interesting characters haven’t been able to save the season from its aimlessness.
“Two Trains” ranks with “Elam Ferguson” as one of the season’s best episodes. It is a quickly paced, violent, down and dirty episode full of great moments, exceptionally clever directing, and excellent performances. This is the Hell on Wheels viewers have come to expect and love.

Last year, AMC moved Hell on Wheels to Saturday nights, leading many to believe the show would be cancelled. The ratings were lower but were good enough for the show to be renewed for a fourth season. Will the numbers rise or sink this time around? Will it be renewed for a fifth season or will it be cancelled instead? Stay tuned!

Hell on Wheels, Season 4, Episode 4, “Reckoning”
Written by Jennifer Cecil
Directed by Dennie Gordon
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
What people are willing to do in order to survive has always been a driving force for Hell on Wheels. It’s been there from the beginning, often used as a stepping stone to something else. Season four has made this concept the show’s main focus. Cullen (Anson Mount) has, from day one, been a brutal man, walking a dangerous line between morality and survival. Really, most of the show’s characters have. How cruel and far away from humanity can one person get all in the name of survival?
We see this idea littered all over “Reckoning”. Durant (Colm Meaney) is willing to bet on Cullen again because he knows that Cullen is his best option. Campbell (Jake Weber) is another great example. He has set about...

Hell on Wheels, Season 4, Episode 3, “Chicken Hill”
Written by John Wirth
Directed by Dennie Gordon
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
“Cullen Bohannon has always worn his integrity like a millstone around his neck”
When Hell on Wheels first began, there was worry that it would never be able to get out of its own way. A revenge-driven anti-hero? We’d seen that a million times before. There were only so many places that kind of story could go and most of them were not good. And then something happened around the end of season 2- revenge was dropped and the show became a compelling character study about men and women in a dreadful world fighting to create something that would help cement their place in history.
When you consider that “Chicken Hill” is only the third episode of season four, it’s quite remarkable how much has already happened this season.

Hell on Wheels, Season 4, Episode 2, “Escape from the Garden”
Written by Mark Richard
Directed by Neil Labute
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
“Blood will be spilled, that’s for sure”
Besides Elam’s (Common) survival, how exactly Cullen (Anson Mount) will escape The Swede (Christopher Heyerdahl) is season four’s biggest question. It’s what fans have wondered about since the end of last season, when the gates of that Mormon compound closed and Cullen was forced to marry Naomi (MacKenzie Porter). Now that he is a father and husband, escaping The Swede has become his top priority. Viewers have been expecting a lot, but few likely predicted what this episode delivers. But more on this later.
Hell on Wheels hit a series high last season and its fourth season premiere last week made it seem like it was going to continue that streak. Thankfully, “Escape from the Garden” doesn’t disappoint.

In the season three finale of AMC’s Hell on Wheels, Elam (Common) went searching for kidnapped Cullen (Anson Mount) and stumbled upon a bear instead. Out of bullets, he was last seen losing that battle. Considering Common’s not in the first official cast photo released for season four (click here for the full version), fans might worry he’s off the show for good. Those who caught him photographed at the cast and crew’s season 4 kickoff dinner, though, may assume Elam’s back. Exec producer John Wirth confirms it: “He survives the bear attack, but I think...

Hell on Wheels, Season 3, Episode 9, “Fathers and Sins”
Written by John Wirth and Reed Steiner
Directed by Billy Gierhart
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
From the moment Cullen (Anson Mount) made the decision to hang the young Mormon teenager in the season premiere, it’s been obvious that there was going to be some kind of brutal retaliation from the Mormons at Fort Smith. Like most things this season, the story has been a slow burn leading to the bloody fight in “Fathers and Sins”.
There is a light humor to most of the episode, until Elam (Common), Ezra (Tayden Marks), and Cullen are chased into Cheyenne and forced into a shootout. Of course, this is Hell on Wheels, so even the lighter moments are tainted with sadness. Ruth’s (Kasha Kropinski) guilt at her involvement in Shaun’s death and Elam’s drunken stupor have become major...

The death of Sean (Ben Esler) reverberates in this week’s episode of Hell on Wheels as Ruth (Kasha Kropinski), feeling as though she failed him, decides she wants to leave town. Cullen (Anson Mount), however, doesn’t want her to go. Watch our sneak peek below and try not to ship them. Then, watch another clip teasing the return of the Mormon father whose son Cullen hanged in the season premiere. Bohannon has bigger problems than whether Ruth gets on that train: “All the guns in the world will not protect Cullen Bohannon.”

Hell on Wheels, Season 3, Episode 5, “Searchers”
Written by Bruce Marshall Romans
Directed by Neil Labute
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
With the exception of last week’s episode, Hell on Wheels has been the best it’s ever been and “Searchers” might just be the season’s greatest episode. Directed by Neil Labute, the highly emotional episode notches up the usual tension, fear, urgency, and sadness to an almost unbearable level.
Season three’s greatest accomplishment, so far, has been its further exploration of characters who until recently were almost always relegated to the background. We already know that Cullen (Anson Mount) is a complex character but Elam’s fierce, single minded approach to finding his daughter is perfectly played by Common.

When a show changes show runners there is usually a difficult transition that causes it to suffer. The arrival of John Wirth caused some concern amongst fans when it was announced, but if the first three episodes of Hell on Wheels are any indication, the change has gone smoothly.
“Range War” seems to encompass the ugliness that is the camp. From scalping and to what Eva (Robin McLeavy) describes as “old whore syndrome”, Hell on Wheels is not only a brutal place physically, but also mentally. This is portrayed by the almost hyper energy that radiates off the early scenes this week, seen often through Cullen (Anson Mount).

It’s pretty apparent at this stage of Hell on Wheels’ first season that the show isn’t very good at being what it wants to be. It’s got big ideas on its mind, but has continually failed to put those big ideas to any sort of meaningful or compelling use. But when the show ditches its feigned depth and delivers something a little more straightforward, it’s actually a decent watch. This week’s episode does just that, returning to part of what made “Immortal Mathematics” work so well – a genuine, gritty face off between two characters.
The big fight between Cullen and Elam, a result of Durant’s desperate need to draw attention away from his inability to pay his workforce, was quite a thrill to watch unfold, even if everything else surrounding it was business as usual. It was brutal, unpredictable, and,...
