Maya Erdelyi is a Boston-based award-winning animator and director. She creates intricate hand-made animations and films inspired by imaginary worlds, memories and the unconscious. Maya's animations utilize a hybrid approach to cut-paper stop-motion, puppetry, print-making, hand-drawn, digital animation and installation. Her work has been shown in national and international film festivals, galleries and museums. She is a recipient of the 2018 WGBH Launchpad Animation residency, a 2017 Brother Thomas Fellowship Award and the 2017 Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship in Film, and most recently was an artist-in-residence at the Marblehouse Project in Vermont.
Maya is a 2012 MFA graduate in Experimental Animation from CalArts. Her thesis film "Pareidolia"won the Barbara Aronofsky award at the 2013 Ann Arbor Film Festival. Maya directed the psychedelic music video "New Cannonball Blues" for TV on the Radio's album and film "Nine Types of Light," which was nominated for a 2012 Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video. Maya is working on her first documentary animation entitled "Anyuka," about her Hungarian Jewish refugee grandmother's life and journey to the US.
Maya is a Faculty member in Animation at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University; and the Lesley College of Art + Design in Boston.
