With wife, Jan, he is the co-creator of the popular Beranstain Bears
series of children's books.
The first Berenstain Bears book, "The Great Honey Hunt," was published
in 1962. The couple was discovered by and edited by children's author
Dr. Seuss, who started Random House's Beginner Books series.

Met his wife Jan at Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art in
1941. The two began drawing together and submitting cartoons to
magazines. They became contributors to The Saturday Evening Post,
McCalls and Collier's.
With his wife Jan churned out more than 250 books showing how the warm
and fuzzy Berenstain Bears - Mama, Papa, brother and sister were, as
well as how the bears confronted and learned from life's crises.
He spent World War II working as an artist in the Army doing detailed
drawings of new plastic surgery procedures for facial wounds.
