• [press conference for Under the Silver Lake (2018) at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival] It started when my wife and I were talking and sort of looking up at the houses in the hills in Los Angeles and we're sort of wondering, "What really happens up there?!" It started with a conversation between us; I was drinking an intense amount of coffee, and it all just kind of came, it was a bit of a fever-dream the way the script formed. I wrote it very quickly. I can't tell you exactly...it was a combination of wanting to do my version of an LA noir and a Los Angeles mystery and then also that idea of "what might really be happening?"
