We’ve all seen the hackneyed, poorly CG-ed, primetime Asylum special on Syfy version of Stung too many times before. Director Benni Diez, every producer, and each department head go the extra mile to avoid such a fate for their 80s throwback creature feature. That’s what’s so endearing about a 2015 “When Insects Attack” flick with gigantic ideas and the right approach, rooted in buzzworthy practical effects. Stung would play gangbusters along with other abominations of nature like Zombeavers or Eight Legged Freaks (for different reasons), also classics like Them! or Mosquito, and deserves reappraisal for standing out from the swarm.
Screenwriter Adam Aresty hatched the idea while working on an actual catering gig with a wasp problem, which he morphed into the gonzo invasion that takes place. Julia (Jessica Cook) runs a catering company hired for an annual New York garden party hosted by newly widowed Mrs. Perch...

Stars: Olli Banjo, Adam Buller, Michelle Colao, Greg Engbrecht, Elle Gabriel, Francesc Garrido, Alias Hilsum, Charles Hubbell, Rob Kerkovich, Vin Kridakorn, Mathis Landwehr, Claire Oelkers, Julio Perillán, Fabio Prati, Luke Sorge | Directed by Dennis Cabella, Javier Chillon, Todd Cobery, Andrew Desmond, Benni Diez, Marcello Ercole, Richard Karpala, Justin McConnell, Antonio Padovan, Fabio Prati, Ethan Shaftel, Marinko Spahic
Much like Dread Central’s Zombieworld, which brought together a number of short films under one banner to create an all-new anthology film, Galaxy of Horrors is a selection of eight shorts, curated from Rue Morgue and Unstable Ground’s Little Terrors Festival by Toronto film programmer Justin McConnell, all wrapped up in the story of a man trapped in a damaged cryogenic pod.
This wraparound segment that sees and astronaut awoken from his cryogenic slimber too soon and forced to watch a series of shorts while the power supply drains away Becasue he’s watching these shorts… Yes, for our astronaut the terror-filled tales are terrifying not only because of their content but because they’re literlly killing him! Of the short films the astronaut (and we the audience) watch there are a number of standouts: Iris, directed by Richard Karpala, which tells the story of a siri-like phone assistant with a conscience when her owner, an assassin, does not. It’s a great take on how technology and humans interact and how far that realtionship with technology could, possibly (more likely imporbably), go.
Pathos, directed by Fabio Prati, Dennis Cabella and Marcello Ercole, is a foreign-language entry which is easily the best – and most memorable (it’s the one short that vividly stuck in my mind waaay after I’d finished watching the film) and tells the story of a future where citizens must pay -literally – to be alive and experience a “life” outside of the odd chamber in which our protagonist’s “exists” – yes his reality, his very existence, is all in his head! This short is yet another look at how humans and technology interact, in this case taking the ideas of alternate realities and how humanity perceives reality, borne out of the likes of The Matrix, to their logical and more importantly, horrific extreme.
Special mention must also go to Antonio Padovan‘s short Eveless, which sees men try to keep the worlds population going without women; and Benni Diez and Marinko Spahic‘s kinetic action/horror hybrid Kingz – which recalls the best of horror anthology V/H/S whilst staying true to its own badass terror-filled ethos.
Whilst the eight shorts tell very different stories, there is a common thread running between them – they’re all damn good films! Unlike a alot of anthologies that have one or two dud amongst their number, each and every short in Galaxy of Horrors hits it out of the park: all eight tales having interesting sci-fi stories to tell and cool concepts to portray. Plus it’s nice to see sci-fi horror in the spotlight once more…
Galaxy of Horrors is out now on DVD from StudioCanal.

Creatures of the night co-workers and party-crashing mutant wasps invade home media next week with Scream Factory's respective Blu-ray releases of Bloodsucking Bastards and Stung, and we have clips and trailers from both high-definition horror films.
Bloodsucking Bastards Blu-ray: "An action-packed vampire comedy in the vein of Office Space and Shaun of the Dead, Bloodsucking Bastards stars Fran Kranz (Cabin in the Woods) as Evan Sanders, a dutiful and overworked employee stuck at a soul-killing corporation with his beautiful girlfriend, Amanda (Emma Fitzpatrick, Significant Mother), and his slacker best friend Tim (Joey Kern, Beneath). Evan's world begins to crumble when Amanda dumps him and his boss, Ted (Joel Murray, God Bless America), hands his coveted promotion to his nemesis Max (Pedro Pascal, Game of Thrones). But just when Evan's convinced that life couldn't bite any harder, his office mates start going through disturbing changes… and bodies begin to pile up.

I love creature features. I love “killer bug” movies – like Infestation – even more (which would also explain my love for the Earth Defence Force video games). So it was pretty much guaranteed that I would adore Stung…
Blending the cliches of traditional insect movies with bizarre creature feature tropes, Stung – the debut feature from German director Benni Diez – follows caterers Paul and Julia, who are hired to organise the bar and buffet for wealthy Mrs. Perch’s annual garden party and think that’s all they have to worry about. Wrong! Mrs Perch’s illegally imported plant fertilizer has infected a local species of killer wasps and with the celebrations in full swing the swarm attack, lay eggs in their human prey, which then mutate into 7-foot tall predators with an attitude!

Benni Diez takes on the creature feature in his debut film Stung, which, while set in the Us, was actually shot in Germany. With a few familiar faces in the supporting cast and generally strong production values, his film coasts by on its modest ambitions, without ever trying very hard to break out of the box. An elderly woman is throwing a do in the garden of her country manor, which is being catered by Julia and Paul. The awkward party ambles along just fine until, mutated by illegal fertilizer, a breed of seven-foot wasps emerge from the ground and descend terror upon the guests. Now it's up to Julia and Paul to save the day, and along the way discover how they really feel...

Spirit of the Wasp’s Nest: Diez’s Debut a Schlocky Creature Feature
African killer bees were once a common threat in disaster themed American cinema of the 1970s, reaching a penultimate plateau of ridiculousness with Irwin Allen’s famous 1978 celebrity packed stink bomb, The Swarm. Their aggressive cousins, mutant wasps, get a chance at bat in Stung, the directorial debut of Benni Diez. Previously a visual effects supervisor, whose most notable credit was Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia (2011), Diez utilizes his particular skillset to notable effect in his first feature. Unfortunately, some striking special effects are the only details saving the picture from being a complete waste of its audience’s time.
Julia (Jessica Cook) has recently had to take over control of her father’s catering business following his untimely death. She’s unsure if she’s up to snuff, relaying her fears to lone employee Paul (Matt...

"Avoid everything here - it's bad." Xyz Films and IFC Midnight have debuted a trailer for the movie Stung, from director Benni Diez, a horror about disgusting giant mutant, ugly ass wasps, that need to be slayed right now. Clifton Collins Jr., Jessica Cook, David Masterson & Lance Henriksen star as guests at a party that goes to hell when these mutant wasps emerge from the ground. The description claims that it has a "seamless blend of CGI and oozing practical effects", but I can't really tell. It's also supposed to be a horror comedy but none of the jokes really hit either. Anyway, take a look and let us know what you think. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Benni Diez's Stung, direct from IFC's YouTube: In a remote country villa set amid foggy rural farmlands, the elderly widow of a pharmaceutical magnate holds an annual garden party for...

Not a big fan of creepy-crawly insects? Neither am I, but I’d still recommend Benni Diez’s seven-foot-wasp creature-feature, Stung. Adam Aresty’s script is something birthed from a schlocky 70s ooze, along the lines of Frogs or The Swarm, favoring a tone that highlights B-Movie comedy over serious, sinisterly dark scares. Don’t get me wrong, these wasps are nothing to f$ck with, but Stung stays focused on being a bloody, charming horror comedy that’s worth the…wait for it…Buzz. Oh yea. Strap in folks. There’s plenty more wasp puns where that came from!

Getting stung by a wasp hurts, and it can be fatal for those who are allergic. But imagine if those tiny winged insects were seven feet tall—you would have to replace your EpiPen with a sword to stand a chance against a stinger that big. In Benni Diez’s Stung, two catering staffers and a group of garden partiers take on giant mutated wasps, and we have a look at the film’s new poster that’s eye-grabbing and eye-puncturing.
“Mrs. Perch, an elderly, wealthy lady from rural America, is throwing a fancy garden party at her remote country villa. Same procedure as every year – except this time her illegally imported plant fertilizer seeps into the ground. Subsequently, a local species of killer wasps that usually lay their eggs into other insects mutates into 7 ft tall predators. And the celebrating upper class company provides just the right kind of prey.

It's day 2 of the American Film Market and more poster art is presenting itself, touting upcoming films. Today, we have a look at art for Stung, a creature feature now in post-production, and Beyond Skyline, a sequel that will begin shooting soon.
In Stung, directed by Benni Diez, a fancy garden party goes terribly wrong after a local species of wasps mutate into giant predators. It’s up to Paul and Julia, two catering staffers at the high-society event, to stop the killer creatures – an effort that kick starts a budding romance between the two. Diez is making his directorial debut with a script by Adam Aresty. Jessica Cook, Matt O'Leary and Lance Henriksen star. Thanks to Twitch for the art.

We've been keeping an eye on the progress of Benni Diez's upcoming horror comedy Stung right from the beginning here at Twitch [And, full disclosure, that's been an easy thing to do given that I'm a credited exec producer on it with Xyz Films also handling international sales.] and with the film now in the final bit of post production it enters the American Film Market with a brand new sales trailer, which I sadly can't share at this point, and fantastic new poster art by Justin Erickson at Phantom City Creative, which I very definitely can. And here it is below. You can click to enlarge.A fancy garden party goes terribly wrong after a local species of wasps mutate into giant predators. It's up...

Stung is a film from production companies Rat Pack Filmproduktion and Xyz Films. The film shows some of that b-movie charm from the late '70s and '80s, where giant insects were the order of the day. In Benni Diez's first feature film, mutated insects crash an upper crust party. Also, the film stars Peter Stormare (The Big Lebowski), Clifton Collins Jr. (Tigerland), Lance Henriksen and Matt O'Leary. Now, a couple of early photos have been released for the film, since production has wrapped. The first photo (above) shows actor Matt O'Leary as Paul. He is a server at the party and he faces a monstrous creature in this still. A second photo shows actress Jessica Cook. Cook plays Julia, a waitress at the event. Julia gets a little too close to some wasp sauce, which covers her entire body. As well, a movie clip for this film was released earlier this year.

Someone must have bought director Benni Diez and his Stung stars Matt O'Leary and Jessica Cook a big can of Raid to deal with the film's giant wasps because things have wrapped up. A stack of new stills have materialised from Benni Diez's new directorial debut creature feature 'Stung'. For those who enjoy a good old fashioned giant insect yarn will be in their element when this bad boy is unleashed onto audiences next year. The new stills focus mainly on our two main leads Paul and Julia, played by 'Brick' and 'In Time' star Matt O'Leary and the stunning model turned actress Jessica Cook. They also feature co-stars Clifton Collins Jr. ('Hellbenders') and a very aged looking Lance Henriksen ('Aliens'). Diez directs from a script provided by Adam Aresty and you can check out the new images below....

While horror fans tend to not see eye to eye on many issues, one thing we can all agree on is that old school practical effects should never take a back seat to CGI - which they unfortunately do these days, far more often than they don't.
If you agree with this statement, then director Benni Diez is looking to please you with his first feature film Stung!
Our friends over at Twitch just shared the first still from the flick, which is produced by Twitch's founder/editor Todd Brown. While Diez had originally unveiled a proof of concept trailer that was loaded with CGI, the still shows a whole different vision, one that includes a badass looking animatronic bug. Word is that Diez will be using practical effects as much as possible with CGI as a supplement rather than a crutch.
Check out the still below along with the aforementioned proof of concept trailer!

It was way, way back in February of 2008 when I first came across German director Benni Diez. He had just co-directed a short film titled Kingz with Marinko Spahic and that short was far and away one of the best I saw in that year, an amazing blend of scifi, action and horror elements that made me a fan for life. I ended up programming Kingz at a few festivals though the year and struck up a relationship with the directors that saw me send them an email every few months since asking why they hadn't made a feature film yet. And then one day Benni answered by saying, "Well, I've got this script ..."That script was Stung, a horror comedy in the vein...

Looking forward to the new mutant wasp-laden horror comedy buzzing our way, Stung? Then get ready for an eye- and ear-ful as a series of production videos has hit the interwebs. Hey, it's Monday! Why not start your goofing off early this week?
Stung stars Matt O'Leary, Jessica Cook, Peter Stormare, and Lance Henriksen. The film is directed by Benni Diez and produced by Christian Becker and Benjamin Munz from Rat Pack Filmproduction and executive produced by Xyz Films. Stung was developed by Munz based on an idea by Adam Aresty, who won Rat Pack’s 2012 horror-writing contest "Write for Your Life."
"Stung, to me, is bringing the creature feature cult film feeling from the 80s into the present and a modern day fun-horror movie," director Diez said previously.

In a few weeks, the mutant wasp creature feature Stung will start its principal photography. Through a series of production video-blogs, producer Benjamin Munz and director Benni Diez plan to document the entire process for those who are interested. The first two blogs can be found on YouTube and we have posted them here. In the film itself, mayhem ensues when a garden party gets attacked by giant wasps. Matt O´Leary, Jessica Cook, Peter Stormare and Lance Henriksen star. A special effects test, released last year, was damn effective and reason enough to keep an eye on this film. Truth be told, at this point the two Bennies are only goofing around a bit in these blogs, but you actually do get a few peeks...

Horror comedies work best when they take their concepts to extremes, never allowing the expected tropes to become a handicap. And it doesn.t take much beyond a giant mutated wasp attack to apply for the .high concept. title. Xyz Films and Rat Pack Filmproduction are working together to bring the genre-mashing Stung to audiences, and ScreenDaily announced the producers attracted the likes of Peter Stormare (Fargo), Matt O.Leary (Pawn Shop Chronicles), Lance Henriksen (Aliens) and Jessica Cook, in her film debut. Sure, this is about the cast you might expect for a movie about big killer insects, but don.t go setting it up against the kind of crap you might see on Syfy. At least not yet. The film will be the first film directed by Benni Diez, whose only other work in the industry besides a few short films has been as a visual effects supervisor...

Matt O'Leary, Jessica Cook, Peter Stormare and Lance Henriksen have all signed on for Benni Diez's creature feature comedy "Stung" from Rat Pack Filmproduction and Xyz Films.
The story follows two catering staff at a fancy garden party who battle a mutated species of wasp.
Christian Becker and Benjamin Munz will produce. Filming begins late October in Berlin.
Diez was a visual effects supervisor on Lars Von Trier's "Melancholia" and posted a VFX test reel for this project a year ago on Vimeo which you can see below:

Horror Comedy / Creature Feature Stung has set its cast and start date. The film, which will begin shooting in Berlin on on October 22nd, 2013 (my twins' birthday, incidentally) will star Matt O´Leary (Brick, Live Free Or Die Hard), Jessica Cook (Mistresses, MTV’s Awkward), Peter Stormare (Pain And Gain, Hansel And Gretel) and Lance Henriksen (The Terminator, Aliens).
In Stung, a fancy garden party goes terribly wrong after a local species of wasps mutate into giant predators. It's up to Paul and Julia, two catering staffers at the high-society event, to stop the killer creatures - an effort that kick-starts a budding romance between the two.
