For my family, Christmas Eve means it’s time for sitcoms. Sure, we occasionally watch a film classic but mostly, the holidays means it’s a time to rewatch Christmas episodes of our favorite sitcoms.
These aren’t necessarily the very best Christmas TV episodes of all times, but the nostalgia-fueled ones that have somehow made it into the permanent rotation each year. For my money, we always start off with the Season 2 episode of “The Office,” “Christmas Party,” which — even now that I have nearly every line of the 22-minute installment memorized — still manages to never get old.
The Dunder-Mifflin fun follows the office Christmas event, complete with a Secret Santa game that quickly goes to hell. It’s character-driven humor which is particularly impressive for early in the run of the program. Romance fans get some sweet, iconic early Pam/Jim stuff with the teapot with “bonus gifts...

Season 7 of "The Simpsons" is one of the best seasons of television ever aired. Not only was the show was still in its "golden age" and delivering classic gag after classic gag at the time, but season 7 is also noteworthy for containing some of the finest Milhouse episodes in the show's history, including the brilliant "Summer of 4ft. 2," in which the level of sheer emotional abuse Milhouse endures remains one of the most hilariously dark running jokes the show ever tried.
What's more, season 7 gave us "A Fish called Selma," in which washed up actor Troy McClure marries Marge's sister as part of his comeback attempt. On his way back to stardom, McClure stars in the ridiculous musical "Stop the Planet of the Apes, I Want to Get Off!" which features a big musical number named after the character Dr. Zaius from the original movie. Even though time has no meaning in the world of Springfield (possibly due to some kind of anomaly in the space time continuum), here in the real world, The Simpsons is more than three decades old. Which means that, even though Bart Simpson will never not be a fresh-faced 10-year-old, the show has included a number of jokes that betray its agedness.
Over on Reddit, Simpsons fans have been sharing some of their favorite, most wildly dated references from the series’ long, long history, which those viewers who were born after the fall of the Soviet Union may not even get. Such as the time that the Simpson family randomly burst into the “I feel like Chicken Tonight” song.
This was, of course, a reference to a commercial jingle that’s almost as old as the show itself. In the early ‘90s, Ragu’s line of poultry sauces was sold...

When "The Simpsons" has the kind of legendary run it had from season 3 to season 8, no episode could knock it from the pantheon of greatest TV shows of all time. The likes of "Lemon of Troy" and "Marge vs. the Monorail" rank among the best "Simpsons" episodes of all time as instantly rewatchable sitcom classics that manage to cram in memorable jokes over a span of 22 minutes. Of course, we're a long way from season 8 at this point, and one could argue there are more bad episodes than good ones by now

As part of their continuing efforts to (blue) milk the Star Wars franchise for all it’s worth, Disney just released a brand new, critically-acclaimed streaming series set in that galaxy far, far away: Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. This one’s about a group of kids who stumble upon a spaceship that ends up taking them far away to freaky planets full of toyetic alien creatures, and also Jude Law.
With any Star Wars project there’s obviously a risk that plot details will leak to the public, which is why they’re usually made under a veil of secrecy, often involving code names. Return of the Jedi, for example, was known as “Blue Harvest” during production. And the more recent Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker went by the code name “Trixie.” In retrospect, had the movie been about some random new character named Trixie, that may have actually...

The premiere of the 36th season of "The Simpsons" was novel. Matt Groening's animated sitcom has been airing for so long -- so ... so long! -- that audiences have frequently begun to wonder how the zeitgeist-defining hit should come to an end. Will it tap out at season 40? At 50? And if so, how would the series actually close? Perhaps to take the pressure off, the showrunners decided that the premiere of season 36 should be a preemptive series finale, giving a retrospective of the entire "Simpsons" oeuvre before the show actually ends. The episode, called "Bart's Birthday," was presented as an awards-show-style screening, projected in a theater stuffed with celebrities ("Weird Al" Yankovic! Penn & Teller! The Unknown Comic!). Conan O'Brien, playing himself, hosted the finale in wistful terms, bidding farewell to the long-running series.

Given the long lead time that animation takes from concept to air, Hayden’s exit has been in the works for a while. Hayden, whose voices also included school bully Jimbo Jones, Rod Flanders, Chief Wiggum’s wife Sarah and Lisa’s friend Janey Powell,...

After 35 years and nearly 700 episodes, one of the core cast members of The Simpsons is leaving. Earlier this week, Pamela Hayden, who voices Milhouse, Jimbo Jones, Rod, (sometimes) Todd and dozens of other characters, announced her retirement from the show, saying, “The time has come for me to hang up my microphone, but how do I say goodbye to The Simpsons? Not easily. It’s been an honor and a joy to have worked on such a funny, witty and groundbreaking show.”
Her final performance will be this Sunday, but before she leaves Springfield for good, I caught her on her way out of town to talk about her earliest memories from The Simpsons, Milhouse’s irrepressible optimism and whether or not he and Lisa belong together.
It was such a surprise to hear that you’re leaving The Simpsons, how did you come to the decision to leave?
It was a fabulous run.

Milhouse Mussolini Van Houten has been in the news a lot lately following the announcement that legendary Simpsons voice actress Pamela Hayden is retiring. While the future of Bart Simpson’s best friend is uncertain, we’d like to take a brief look at his past.
Obviously, Milhouse went on to become one of the funniest characters in the history of the entire show, but his origin story is far from glamorous. Milhouse made his first appearance alongside Bart in a commercial for Butterfinger back in December 1988. This was a full year before The Simpsons even premiered.
To be clear, Milhouse wasn’t a part of the popular Tracey Ullman Show shorts that spawned the commercial, he was purely created to help a massive corporation sell chocolate. And for that reason, it seems as though not a whole lot of thought was put into the design of Bart’s new buddy.

The voice of Milhouse is leaving after season 35 of "The Simpsons." Pamela Hayden has been a part of the long-running series since the first season aired back in 1989 and also voices Jimbo Jones, Rod (and sometimes Todd) Flanders, and Chief Wiggum's wife Sarah. Now, however, fans of Milhouse will surely be feeling conflicted about one of the show's best characters being voiced by another actor.
Rather than dwell upon what is truly the end of an era for "The Simpsons," however, why not celebrate the legacy of Hayden's Milhouse? The boy whose mom says he's cool; who knows far too much about the various types of sprinklers; who's had his picture on "America's Most Wanted" and was subsequently hunted by the FBI before jumping from a dam to what would have been certain death (he only broke his glasses), has been provided some of the best moments in the show's long history.

But, most famously, Hayden gave life to Bart’s bespectacled, blue-haired best friend Milhouse Van Houten, who first debuted in a 36-year-old Simpsons Butterfinger commercial that actually predated the series.
Reportedly, Sunday’s non-Halloween “Treehouse of Horror” episode will be Hayden’s last. So far there has been no announcement concerning the future of Hayden’s characters, including Milhouse. Will they recast him? Write him out of the show? Have him come down with a case of laryngitis that just never goes away?
Rampant speculation aside, Hayden seems pretty irreplaceable. To underscore that bittersweet point, here are some of the great Milhouse moments that wouldn’t have worked nearly as well with another actor:

After 35 years of exceptional service to the comedy community, legendary voice actress Pamela Hayden has announced her imminent retirement from The Simpsons. Like many of the original Simpsons voice actors, Hayden, 70, plays numerous roles on the show, including Jimbo Jones, Rod (and sometimes Todd) Flanders and the fan-favorite elementary school sad sack Milhouse Van Houten, best known for his bone-dry cuffs and unrequited love of Lisa Simpson that leads him to dangerous places.
Hayden’s final performance on The Simpsons will be in this Sunday’s new episode “Treehouse of Horror Presents: Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes,” and, to celebrate Hayden’s many years of hard work and dedication, the official Simpsons Twitter account posted a touching tribute. Today, everybody likes Milhouse.

Yesterday morning, Cincinnati Bengals beat reporter Jay Morrison revealed that everything is not, in fact, coming up Milhouse in the world of professional football. Namely, that despite the Bengals and Dallas Cowboys both experiencing highly disappointing seasons, the NFL can’t bump their upcoming, not-so-anticipated Monday Night Football matchup due to a Simpsons alternate cast that’s set to air on ESPN+ and Disney+.
“For those asking, the Bengals-Cowboys Mnf game is not eligible to be flexed out,” Morrison wrote of the teams’ December 9th showdown in a now-viral tweet. “All the drawings, voiceovers and other work that has been done for The Simpsons alt-cast that will air that night.”
Considering both teams have had humdrum seasons — the Cowboys currently stand at 3-7 while the Bengals aren’t much better at 4-7 — football fans reacted much like Springfieldians upon discovering their city had been encased in a glass dome,...

Making The Simpsons Movie must have been a daunting task. How do you honor nearly 20 years of iconic material in one 90-minute feature? Most recurring Simpsons characters got at least one moment to shine in the movie — from Krusty the Clown, to Hans Moleman, to Kent Brockman. And the movie even found ways to include brief cameos from more obscure characters like Itchy & Scratchy creator Chester J. Lampwick, and foul-mouthed puppet Gabbo.
Which makes it all the more strange that one of the show’s most well-known characters was absolutely nowhere to be found in The Simpsons Movie: Bart’s mortal enemy Dr. Demento Sideshow Bob.
Bob Terwilliger is obviously one of the keystones of the show’s mythology, but didn’t make the cut for the movie? This wasn’t always the plan, it turns out. Some story elements shifted around during production; the original villain of The Simpsons...

For its season 36 premiere last month, "The Simpsons" gave fans a fake-out series finale where all the Springfield characters (except Bart) received happy, conclusive endings, implying better days (and possible spin-offs) ahead. "I'm sure gonna miss this place," everyone kept saying, turning the lights off to whichever room they were in and solemnly walking out the door.
The episode was not the real finale, of course, but it did offer a glimpse of what the finale could look like. For a show that's been famously hesitant to break with the status quo, even if it means keeping poor characters like Milhouse or Moe in endless agony, it could make sense for the series finale to center around the characters breaking free. It would be nice for Milhouse to get Lasik surgery or for Homer to start being a better father. But for showrunner and executive producer Matt Selman, the ideal...

The Simpsons’ “Treehouse of Horror” episodes may not seem so scary today compared to *gestures to literally everything going in the world*. But for those of us who grew up with the show, the horror-themed programming often exposed our impressionable minds to macabre themes that were wholly new to us. For example, there are a whole lot of people who saw “The Shinning” as kids long before they ever saw The Shining.

For how often Nelson Muntz externalizes his rage in the form of hilarious beatdowns, you have to wonder what’s really going on inside Springfield’s most formidable bully among all the guts, black stuff and about 50 Slim Jims.
On The Simpsons, even bit characters are always more complicated than their surface-level trope may suggest. Take the “Just Stamp the Ticket Man,” for instance. Despite only appearing in brief, even curt scenes, the background character’s arc has spanned decades and evolved alongside the show itself. As such, it’s fitting that the archetypal bully character whom the show introduced as the antagonist of the Season One episode “Bart the General” should contain complexities and multitudes that even Springfield Elementary’s resident brainiac couldn’t fully grasp, no matter how passionately she smooched him under the moonlight.

The season 36 premiere of "The Simpsons" feels a lot like an April Fool's episode, in that its entire premise is a meta joke about the show's longevity. "Bart's Birthday" is framed as a ceremony hosted by "Simpsons" alum Conan O'Brien, which starts off with him explaining how Fox has been trying to cancel "The Simpsons" since day one. He shows us a few potential series finales that supposedly almost happened: one where Homer really does die when falling down the Springfield Gorge, one where a skiing Homer gets brutally split in half when he crashes into a tree, and one where he accidentally blows up the entire town.
The main segment revolves around Conan tasking an AI machine to write the perfect series finale for modern "Simpsons," with terrible results. Almost every character is given a rushed happy ending, most of them with strong spinoff potential, while a confused Bart...

Spoiler Alert: Details follow for Season 36, Episode 1 of “The Simpsons,” “Bart’s Birthday,” which aired September 29 on Fox.
“The Simpsons” kicked off its Season 36 premiere on Sunday with what the show dubbed its “series finale.” Hosted by an animated version of former “Simpsons” writer Conan O’Brien, the episode opened with “The Simpsons” characters and other notables entering a Dolby Theatre-esque venue to celebrate the show’s ending.
“It’s such an honor to be with you all for the series finale of ‘The Simpsons,'” O’Brien said in his opening monologue. “I knew I was the right man for the job because I’ve hosted the last episode of three of my own shows and counting… Well, it’s true. Fox has decided to end the Simpsons. This show was such a special part of my early career, so being here means the world to me. Also. I left...
