(“Guardians 2” spoilers follow.)
So here’s a poser: In “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” we have Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and his father, Ego (Kurt Russell), a living planet that takes on human form. Weta Digital was challenged with creating the interior look of Ego, along with the various transformations during his climactic fight with Quill.
This involved complicated mathematical patterns known as fractals (inspired by artist Hal Tenny, who served as a consultant). However, not only did Weta have difficulty controlling the fractals, but it also had to make them pliable in short order.
And then there was the biggest challenge: Weta was charged with ensuring that “Guardians” avoided an R-rating. That’s because 40% of Ego gets destroyed in the fight, and his internal organs can be seen dangling behind him. Weta offered to make him look more fractal, oozing black blood, but director James Gunn would have none of that.

Like any good millennial, Guy Williams posted his phone up in the grass, in order to get an up-close video of a cute visiting raccoon. The musician and Bellarmine University student, who lovingly nicknamed the animal "Stanley," probably did not expect what came next. What started as an adorable recording of Stanley crushing some snacks, ended with the raccoon grabbing his phone, and taking it for an epic journey. The best part? His camera was still on during the entire chase. Williams tweeted, "A Raccoon Just Picked Up My Phone With Its Teeth And Took Off." He posted the video and added, "I Was Trynna Video A Raccoon And It Just Picked Up My Phone And Took Off." When you watch the clip, you'll understand why...

A sports car previously owned by Steve McQueen has sold at auction for £6m.
McQueen bought the 1967 Ferrari 275 Gtb/4 during filming for the 1968 film Bullitt.
The car was sold at Rm Auctions' sale in Monterey, California for four times its normal price.
McQueen owned the car for three years, until he sold it to the actor Guy Williams.
It is not the first time a car previously owned by the late actor has sold for a high fee. His Porsche 911 sold for £830,000 in 2011.
Max Girardo, managing director of Rm Auctions in Europe, said: "The Steve McQueen factor is simply immeasurable. There is nothing better to spend your money on than a Steve McQueen Ferrari."

The American actor had resprayed the car from silver to red and fitted wheels from his Ferrari Nart Spyder, which he had crashed and he kept the 165mph car until 1971and later sold it to fellow actor Guy Williams.

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

After a lengthy awards season that lasted three long months, the race for the Oscars came to a conclusion tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
This year’s 86th Academy Awards saw a split between Best Picture and Director. 12 Years A Slave won three, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o.
Backstage, producer/actor Brad Pitt said, “ I love this movie. I ‑‑ just as a film, as a lover of film, the filmmaking, the ‑‑ this heroic story of a man in this inhumane situation trying to get back to his family. I love this film. I love the filmmaking. With so much time between the nominations in January, the various guild awards and the Olympics thrown in, the 6,028 AMPAS voters have had a long time to mull things, and their votes, over.
The winner’s acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actor Guild Awards (SAG) and the British Academy Awards (BAFTA) have never been more important as they have during this past month and a half. Voting for the Oscars closed on Tuesday, February 25, at 5 p.m.

In the lead-up to the 86th annual Academy Awards on March 2, HitFix will be bringing you the lowdown on all 24 Oscar categories with multiple entries each day. Take a few notes and bone up on the competition as we give you the edge in your office Oscar pool! The season of Oscars Lowdown (née Oscar Guide) might as well begin with the biggest no-brainer category of the bunch, just to go ahead and get it out of the way. But it's worth pointing out that it's always unfortunate when there's an obvious winner in any category, particularly Best Visual Effects as it seems a number of times over the last few years — "Avatar," "Life of Pi," etc. — there has been a clear dominant player and all other nominees are just along for the ride. Still, this year's likely victor is a landmark every bit deserving of the trophy coming its way.

Last night the 2014 BAFTA Awards took place, hosted by Stephen Fry from London's Royal Opera House and it was 12 Years a Slave taking Best Film and Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor while Gravity was honored for Outstanding British Film and Alfonso Cuaron was named Best Director. Interestingly enough, 12 Years a Slave only won the two awards while Gravity was the night's biggest winner taking home an additional four awards in technical categories, including Score (Steven Price) and Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki). It's interesting to see a list of winners where Dallas Buyers Club wasn't nominated for a single award considering its two main characters played by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto are, more or less, considered locks to win Best Actor and Supporting Actor. Oscar nominations 2014: Quite a few surprises (photo: Best Actress Oscar nominee Amy Adams in ‘American Hustle’) The Oscar 2014 nominations were announced early on Thursday morning, January 16, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Was Amy Adams shortlisted for American Hustle? Did Meryl Streep break another Oscar record? Did Robert Redford nearly break the record for longest gap between nominations in the acting categories? Was Jennifer Lawrence snubbed? Did Scarlett Johansson make Oscar history for her voice performance as Joaquin Phoenix’s love interest in Her? Was Peter Jackson-Ian McKellen’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug shortlisted in the technical categories? Well, below you’ll find the answers to all these questions. Be prepared: as usual, there were quite a few surprises. (You can compare the Academy’s choices to our Oscar 2014 predictions.) Full list of Oscar 2014 nominations Best Picture: American Hustle,...

Now that we are knee-deep in awards season it is time to avoid to political back-slapping and enjoy the film year in retrospect. There’s little chance that the 86th Academy Awards nominations will throw up any grand surprises however the debate it will stir will all point to a positive outcome: that people who love film will champion them and argue about their inclusion (or not).
With the 2014 BAFTA nominations recently announced it’ll be interesting to see how far apart the two Academies are this year, but there are sure to be favourites in common. Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave is certain to gather up nominations, likewise Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity will grab onto directing and technical awards for sure, American Hustle is certain to have a nomination of two as well. What we’re looking forward to are the smaller films, unable to throw stocked coffers at For Your Consideration campaigns,...

Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing,...

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the nominations for the British Academy Film Awards and Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" led the pack with 11 nominations including Best Film, British Film (who knew "Gravity" was a British movie?), Director for Cuaron, Screenplay for Cuaron and his son Jonas, and Actress for Sandra Bullock.
The biggest snub in my humble opinion was "Dallas Buyers Club" which appeared nowhere on the nominations list. Apparently, the British Academy did not deem Matthew McConaughey or Jared Leto award-worthy!
The BAFTA Awards will take place on Feb. 16 at the Royal Opera house in London. Will "Gravity" emerge as the victorious movie that night? And by the way, "Gravity" was my No. 1 favorite film of 2013!

Early this morning saw the announcement of the nominations for the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) awards for 2013. For the most part, they look like all of the other guild nominations we’ve seen over the past month or so (including all five director nominees who were just nominated for the DGA’s top award), but there are a few interesting differences to take note of.
First off, Philomena has a much stronger presence here, but given that it is a British film, it’s hardly surprising. You may also notice a lot of love for Behind the Candelabra, a film that was only shown on TV in the States, making it ineligible for theatrical awards.
However, aside from that, just about all the major players are here. Gravity leads the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director, and Best Actress. 12 Years a...

It’s already an amazing awards show season, and the 2014 BAFTA Awards just released their own list of worthy contenders.

In a live broadcast streamed this morning, the British Academy announced its nominees for this year's BAFTAs. We didn't have the time or the money to get hold of a tuxedo in time for the event, but we did manage to put on an extremely posh dressing gown.

There are few genuine surprises among the choices, but we're guessing that Frozen's a shoo-in for best animation.
