Apple TV+ continues to build out its already impressive library of sci-fi TV shows with “Murderbot.” The new comedy from showrunners Paul and Chris Weitz (“About a Boy”) joins “Silo,” “Foundation” and “Severance” as yet another high-concept, star-studded sci-fi offering from its streaming service. ‘Big Mouth’ Packs Up Its Dildos and Diagrams Just When We Need Them Most
Image
Efforts by Republicans at all levels of government to make the populace more ignorant are, unfortunately, going great. As of 2023, 28 percent of American adults ranked at the lowest levels of literacy. Compared to the last decade, American students’ math scores have dropped steeply in an international test. And as if chipping away at the teaching of basic skills wasn’t enough, officials in Republican-led states have been on the march against sex education for years. Soon, you might not even be able to do your own independent study on the subject: the latest page from the Project 2025 playbook is a Republican bill to ban all pornography in the U.S. In our current era of prudishness, Netflix’s Big Mouth feels like a precious resource we should protect at all costs.

The penultimate season ended on such a tease — the first day of high school is where the show was leaving us?...

Murderbot episode 1 throws you right into the intriguing sci-fi world (Review)
Image
I feel like sci-fi thriller comedy shows aren't very common, but if done right they can be really interesting and entertaining. So far based on Apple TV+'s new show that falls in that category, Murderbot, the series definitely fits that bill. Two episodes dropped on premiere day, with one installment released each week of the 10-episode season.

The show is based on author Martha Wells' book series of the same name, starring Alexander Skarsgård as a security unit robot tasked with protecting the PreservationAux team who are on an expedition on an unknown planet. While it's there to protect them, SecUnit would rather watch its soap operas. Here's our review of Murderbot episode 1, "FreeCommerce!" Spoilers Below.

Alexander Skarsgård in Apple TV+'s Murderbot.

We're introduced to Murderbot itself from the very first scene, fed up with having to protect people. Especially those who are disrespectful. That's because the units...

Image
If you're a fan of Alexander Skarsgård, then you'll definitely want to tune in to the actor's new show on Apple TV+! Murderbot comes out very soon on the streamer, and we're already hooked on the sci-fi thriller action comedy just from the initial looks of it. Yes, it has all those genres wrapped into one. As a member of the press, I've already seen the first couple of episodes, and I can tell you that the writers have set that tone successfully.

Murderbot premieres Friday, May 16, 2025 with the first two episodes on Apple TV+. There's a total of 10 episodes in the season, all running for about 30 minutes. So it really isn't a very long watch, and it's easy to squeeze into your schedule. Going froward, you can only expect one episode each week though, with the finale on Friday, July 11, 2025. Need a breakdown of when each episode is out?...

True Blood Star's New Sci-Fi Thriller Series Debuts With a Rare Perfect Score on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Alexander Skarsgard has a long history with television series after his success on True Blood and Big Little Lies. Now, he has a new leading role in Murderbot.

The series is an Apple TV+ original show, created by Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz, and based on The Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells. Murderbot follows Skarsgard's titular character, a rogue security robot who secretly gains free will. Ahead of its official release on May 16,Murderbot debuted with a rare 100% score from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

So far, the sci-fi series has only 21 reviews, but all of them are perfect. The score might fluctuate as more reviews come in, although the initial response for the series is encouraging. Considering Murderbot is not officially out yet, there is no audience score at the time of writing.

It looks like Apple TV+ might just have another hit on its hands based on how the critics are responding to ‘Murderbot.’

We’ve all been there. All we want to do is relax and watch our favorite shows, but work just won’t stop getting in the way. That’s all that Alexander Skarsgård’s character wants to do in the new Apple TV+ sci-fi comedy “Murderbot.” The only difference between the character and us is that it is an android designed to protect and obey humans, but it hacked its programming and now has a mind of its own. The 10-episode first season debuts on Friday, May 16, and reviews have begun rolling out. So, if you aren’t sure if you want to invest two months of viewing time on the show, we are rounding up reviews from some of the biggest television critics so you can make...

‘Murderbot’: Rise of Alexander Skarsgård as the Machine
Image
Is the title character of the new Apple TV+ series Murderbot the most relatable person, machine, or other in science fiction history? Yes, the security unit (played by Alexander Skarsgård) has no genitals and various deadly weapons built into its artificial body. But its desires are simple: “All I really wanted was to be left alone to watch my shows.”

You see, in the first episode of the show — adapted by Paul and Chris Weitz from the beloved series of novels by Martha Wells — Murderbot (as it has privately dubbed...

Murderbot TV Review: Alexander Skarsgård leads the Apple TV+ sci-fi series based on the best-selling novels
Image
Plot: Based on Martha Wells’ bestselling Hugo and Nebula Award-winning book series, “Murderbot” is a sci-fi thriller/comedy about a self-hacking security construct who is horrified by human emotion yet drawn to its vulnerable clients. Murderbot must hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe.

Review: A series called Murderbot seems like it would be focused on buckets of blood and bodies strewn every which way, but it is a surprisingly balanced blend of comedy and drama based on the book series by Martha Wells. With Alexander Skarsgard in the title role as the humanoid machine who hates humans as much as he dislikes working when his favorite television series is on, Murderbot faithfully interprets the source material. With impressive production values courtesy of the deep pockets at Apple Studios,...

Review: Murderbot is a hilariously great adaptation that makes the most of its new medium
Image
This Friday, Apple TV+ will premiere Murderbot, its new television show based on the beloved Murderbot Diaries books by Martha Wells. Wells' books are cult favorites among sci-fi readers and have racked up a number of major awards in the field like the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus. Saying anticipation is high for this series feels like a massive understatement; many people are dying to watch this show, and after reading the first book, I fully understand why.

Apple's TV show is created by Chris and Paul Weitz and stars Alexander Skarsgård as the titular Murderbot, a self-hacking security construct which has found a way to bypass its failsafes and gain free will. As such, it no longer needs to listen to humans! Except that if the humans find out that it did this, they would melt it down for scrap. So rather than take any risks, Murderbot binge watches...

Murderbot Review — An Ambitious Twist on a Tired Genre
Image
Murderbot is the latest science fiction series from Apple TV+, taking an ambitious swing at a well-worn trope in the genre. Paul and Chris Weitz — known for Rogue One and American Pie — bring a deadpan comedic style to the source material that proves deadly effective. However, they rarely push the envelope within the genre.

While the series can be addictive and engaging at times, it often falls into the trap common to many Apple productions: a gluttonous display of style over substance, more concerned with showing off than telling a compelling story. (It is the “Look at me!” approach.)

Thank goodness for Alexander Skarsgård, whose humorous spin on the material keeps the viewer engaged. Skarsgård’s dilemmatic turn and dry wit engage the audience enough to keep coming back for more.

Every Season Of 30 Rock, Ranked
Image
Pound for pound, "30 Rock" is one of the funniest TV shows ever made, and that's not hyperbole. If you've watched the show, you know for a fact that it's packed so densely with jokes that you might find yourself constantly rewinding episodes because you were laughing so hard at something that you completely missed five subsequent sight gags and throwaway lines. The show was created by Tina Fey, who, at that point, was best known for writing and acting on "Saturday Night Live," and ultimately, she and her co-showrunner Robert Carlock were encouraged to take her experience on "SNL" and turn it into the show that became "30 Rock." So, just in case you haven't watched it — or it's been a while — what's the general deal with "30 Rock?"

Well, Fey stars as Liz Lemon, the head writer of a frankly terrible-looking sketch show called "The Girly Show," or...

Image
It's almost time to bid farewell, but not goodbye to the Bridgeton teens. Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for the eighth and final season of Nick Kroll's animated comedy Big Mouth, teasing what's to come for Nick and his friends as they navigate a whole new set of challenges as high-schoolers. After graduating from middle school back in 2023, milestones are about to hit the kids hard and fast as they not only deal with their changing bodies, but also navigate sexual inexperience, drugs, driving, porn, cancel culture, and fear of the future in a complicated environment. In the end, however, what they'll need most to survive this overwhelming time is friendship and support from each other.

‘Big Mouth’: Nick Goes Through Puberty and the Kids Start High School in Final Season Trailer
Image
To quote Nick Kroll’s Maury, “It’s the end of a very gross era.” “Big Mouth” dropped the trailer for its eighth and final season on Wednesday, and it’s just as upsetting and surprisingly sweet as this raunchy animated comedy has always been. The longest-running scripted Netflix original will premiere on May 23.

“Do you schmucks even know why you go through puberty?” Natasha Lyonne asks as a sassy new teacher. The video then cuts to a series of embarrassing scenes, from Missy (Ayo Edebiri) accidentally farting on another student’s lunch to Jessi (Jessi Klein) panicking about her Pms. But it’s not all humiliating bodily functions. The trailer also shows Lola (Kroll) introducing Matthew (Andrew Rannells) to something called the gay pornscape, a colorful land filled with men happily exploring their various kinks. And this season has a special surprise in store for one of its main...

Alexander Skarsgård tells us about becoming Murderbot for Apple TV+'s new sci-fi series
Image
The beloved Murderbot book series by Martha Wells is coming to the small screen on May 16, and if you're a sci-fi lover, there's reason to get excited. Murderbot stars Alexander Skarsgård as a self-hacking security construct (called a SecUnit) who has overridden its own governor module, the bit of technology that forced it to obey humans. Now it has free will and can do whatever it wants...so long as the humans don't find out what it's done and melt it down to scrap. With such high stakes, it can't afford to slip up, so rather than drawing attention it distracts itself by binge-watching cheesy soap operas. Who among us hasn't?

The Murderbot Diaries books have won a slew of major science fiction literary awards, including the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus. But even more importantly, they've carved out a passionate fanbase of readers who can't get enough of the SecUnit's...

Tina Fey and Steve Carell Explain How Their ‘Four Seasons’ Cast Became a Family

“The Four Seasons” may be about three couples who make up a close-knit friend group but at its core, it’s a show about chosen families. That remains true for the superstar cast as well, who discussed growing into a family themselves at the Netflix premiere on Thursday night in Los Angeles.

Carell stars alongside Tina Fey, Will Forte, Marco Calvani, Kerri Kenney-Silver and Colman Domingo (who was not present for the DGA red carpet and two-episode screening).

First Murderbot trailer sees Alexander Skarsgård begrudgingly defend idiot humans
Image
The first season of the comedic sci-fi thriller series Murderbot is due out soon on Apple TV+, and the hype is building. Today, the streamer dropped the first trailer for the show, created by Academy Award nominees Chris and Paul Weitz and starring Alexander Skarsgård as a self-hacking security construct who is disgusted by human emotions yet inexplicably drawn to them. Murderbot would much rather be watching soap operas than dealing with humans, which of course means it will have to deal with plenty of actual human drama over the course of the season's 10-episode run.

The Murderbot Diaries books by Martha Wells are known for their quirky humor and wit, and the show looks like it captures that spirit perfectly. Check it out:

30 Rock Cast: What Are They Doing in 2025?
Image
Tina Fey’s 30 Rock was one of the finest comedies that aired on TV. While it did not enjoy the ratings success of other similar workplace sitcoms like The Office or Parks and Recreation, it was nominated for a total of 103 Emmys. Fey used her signature surreal humor to bring to life the world of television that she knew and prospered in.

The show parodied her experiences as the head writer of Saturday Night Live with a fun-filled take on the corporate structure of NBC. Fey played Liz Lemon, the head writer of the series Tgs with Tracy Jordan. She has to work alongside network executive Jack Donaghy, played by Alec Baldwin.

The series also starred Tracy Morgan as the star of Tgs Tracy Jordan, Jane Krakowski as Tgs co-star Jenna Maroney, and Jack McBrayer as NBC page Kenneth Parcell.

Netflix drops new trailer for Tina Fey's 'The Four Seasons'
Image
If you saw Alan Alda's 1981 version of The Four Seasons, you know the film was a charming, if not overly biting, drama-comedy about three couples who go on vacations each season. The happy dynamic is broken once one of the couples splits up. One of the persons in that couple ends up bringing a much younger person along on following trips.

If you were a fan of the film, you should be excited to know that Tina Fey created an adaptation in a series format and bringing that to Netflix. The series with feature eight 30-minute long episodes. That implies Fey's adaptation will be much more of a pure comedy than a melodrama. Good.

In fact, the new trailer for the series dropped by Netflix on Thursday implies the series won't only be funny, but a little goofy, too. Great. That is honestly only likely to make the premise funnier.

Final Big Mouth Season to Debut on Netflix May 23
Image
Netflix has announced that the eighth and final season of Big Mouth will premiere globally on the streaming service on May 23, 2025.

In the 10-episode season, our beloved Bridgeton teens tackle new challenges as high schoolers, such as driving, drugs, sexual inexperience, enthusiastic consent, porn, and the teenage mind, cancel culture, their changing bodies, and (in the end) fear of the looming future.

Through it all, friendship is the cornerstone for surviving this time of life – whether one’s puberty is just beginning, like for Nick, who gets his first growth spurt, or near its conclusion, like for a maturing (and prematurely balding) Andrew.

At the height of the season, when many of our characters are in crisis, Compassion (personified as a new creature voiced by Holly Hunter) emerges as a crucial way forward. How Gene Hackman Inspired Alec Baldwin's 30 Rock Performance
Image
The recent passing of the iconic and legendary actor Gene Hackman has led to innumerable accounts of his work ethic and the impact he made throughout decades of film work. Naturally, one of the other discussions has centered around how he inspired his fellow actors and actresses through those distinctive performances. The nature of his lengthy filmography is such that Hackman wound up working with many younger actors who are now titans of their generations. He had a fiery chemistry with Denzel Washington in the 1995 thriller "Crimson Tide," he worked with a young Willem Dafoe in the 1988 historical drama "Mississippi Burning," and in one of his last roles, he had to face off against John Cusack in "Runaway Jury." One actor with whom Hackman didn't exactly work next to, but who was still impacted by him, was Alec Baldwin.

It should be noted at the top that Hackman and Baldwin...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on The Eddie Volkman Show on Star 96.7 Joliet (Il) on January 31st, reviewing the new film “You’re Cordially Invited,” featuring Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon and currently streaming on Prime Video.

Will Ferrell is Jim, the widower father of bride Jenni (Geraldine Viswanathan) who ends up double booking her wedding on an island resort against Margot (Reese Witherspoon), the hard charging TV executive sister of Neve (Meredith Hager), the other bride. As the families gather together, they have to find a way to make it work. Along the way, there are misunderstandings, singing, dancing and yes, Will-as-Jim wrestling an alligator.

”You’re Cordially invited” is streaming on Prime Video since January 31st. Featuring Will Ferrell, Reese Witherspoon, Geraldine Viswanathan, Meredith Hager, Jack McBrayer and Peyton Manning. Written and directed by Nicholas Stoller. Rated “R”.

Reese Witherspoon Says Actor Friend ‘Doesn’t Talk to Me Anymore’ After Awards Speech Gone Wrong: ‘She Doesn’t Like Me’ and ‘I’m Still Embarrassed’
Image
Reese Witherspoon revealed in a recent interview with People magazine that she burned a bridge with a fellow actor friend after she roasted her at an awards ceremony. The actor no longer speaks to Witherspoon. The “Walk the Line” Oscar winner did not reveal the actor’s name, but she did admit that the whole situation “haunts me, it literally haunts me.”

“So this friend of mine, who I didn’t really know that well, but she was a very serious, proper actress,” Witherspoon said. “She asked me to give her an award, but I had never been to this award ceremony, so I thought it was like a roast. So I got up and I roasted her.”

“But that was not the tone,” she continued. “The tone was British, elegant, classy, and I was like, ‘Remember the time we got laser hair removal?’ I’m still embarrassed about it.

You’re Cordially Invited
Image
On the surface, You’re Cordially Invited has a premise precision-tooled for pure romcom hijinks: two weddings, one venue, multiple sabotage attempts on behalf of each family. And while filmmaker Nicholas Stoller peppers his latest with all kinds of explosive incidents – cake-smashing, dock-destroying, ’gator-wrassling acts of carnage – they somehow prove less interesting than what’s going on under the hood of his protagonists.

That shouldn’t be a surprise, since Stoller’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall always sat on the more heartfelt end of the Apatow bro-comedy spectrum, while his Bad Neighbours grounded its houses-at-war premise in the very real panic of new parenthood. You’re Cordially Invited offers a similarly emotional basis to underpin its set-pieces. Will Ferrell’s Jim is stunned when his college-graduate daughter (Blockers’ Geraldine Viswanathan) comes home with a shiny rock on her finger; he raised her solo after his wife’s death, and throws himself into wedding-planner mode to mask his turmoil.

‘You’re Cordially Invited’ Review: Reese Witherspoon & Will Ferrell Don’t Reinvent Wedding Comedies But Still Find Laughs & Heart
Image
There is really nothing that is not completely predictable about Amazon Prime Video’s latest big budget romantic comedy, but with Reese Witherspoon back in the genre, and Will Ferrell doing what he does best, the chemistry is there, and so are some laughs, including a real Lol moment involving Ferrell and an uncooperative alligator that is a good reason comedies should probably best be seen with a crowd. Unfortunately, despite its stars and fan-friendly genre, this one is straight to streaming. At least in a Valentine’s Day period, You’re Cordially Invited qualifies more appropriately as a far more pleasant date movie than the horror and action Valentine’s movie the studios have planned this year. It isn’t going to make you forget My Best Friend’s Wedding, Bridesmaids and Father Of The Bride anytime soon, but it’ll do, even as the ‘R’ rating here seems a little harsh.

‘You’re Cordially Invited’ Cast and Character Guide: Who’s Who at This Chaotic Wedding?
Image
There is a wildcard at every wedding, but in the case of “You’re Cordially Invited,” there are two. And they are played by Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon.

Now streaming on Prime, the film directed by Nicholas Stoller centers on two families who unknowingly double book their weddings at the same small inn — an inn that can really only accommodate one wedding. For Jim (Ferrell), it is his daughter’s, and for Margot (Witherspoon), it is her sister’s. Naturally, the two immediately go insane, trying to force the other to back down.

Somehow, Ferrell and Witherspoon have never led a comedy together, but they are doing it now with a very familiar cast.

Here are the major players you need to know.

Will Ferrell in “You’re Cordially Invited” (Prime Video) Jim (Will Ferrell)

Jim is Jenni’s dad, who has been raising her on his own for years since his wife’s death.

‘You’re Cordially Invited’ Review: Wedded Miss
Image
The premise of You’re Cordially Invited, of two tonally opposed weddings getting booked at an exclusive, remote island in Georgia, is essentially a license for mayhem. That one of the weddings would seem to revolve around an overprotective Jim (Will Ferrell) clinging too hard to his terminally online daughter, Jenni (Geraldine Viswanathan), is a hook that’s right in Ferrell’s wheelhouse. The other wedding caters perfectly to the sensibilities of his co-star, Reese Witherspoon, who plays a successful TV producer, Margot, who gets roped into planning the wedding for her sister, Nev (Meredith Hagner), putting her at odds with her rich relatives.

You’re Cordially Invited follows an emotionally honest confrontation about how lonely it can be for Margot to return to her Southern origins after making it in L.A. with a scene where Jim wrestles an alligator. It then follows the abject, purposeful cringe of Jim and Jenni...
