"A race against time." Another official trailer has just debuted for Tanks for Stalin, a WWII movie from Russia about the infamous T-34 tank. Set in 1940 on "the eve of the war with fascist Germany" - a prototype of a new cutting edge tank is being taken on a secret mission to Moscow, to Comrade Stalin. Soon the cross-country run turns into a ruthless race against time - and the enemy. Starring Andrey Merzlikin, Aglaya Tarasova, Anton Filipenko, Aleksandr Tyutin, Sergey Stukalov. This is Russia's version of jingoism - they love to show off their tank that crushed the Germans! They've made many movies about it - including one called T-34 just last year. It looks a bit like Mad Max but with tanks, though I doubt it's really that good. Here's the new official trailer (+ original poster) for Kim Druzhinin's Tanks for Stalin, from YouTube: On the...

Fortress Of War
Stars: Evgeniy Tsyganov, Pavel Derevyanko, Andrey Merzlikin, Veronika Nikonova, Anna Tsukanova | Written by Aleksey Dudarev, Ekaterina Tirdatova, Igor Ugolnikov | Directed by Alexander Kott
World War II films are a common entry into the war genre. Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan seems to be the benchmark for the Americanised war films, with the highly personalised story of the search for one man in the war. Fortress of War takes that style of a centralised story within a broader spectrum and does it with absolute aplomb.
Fortress of War tells the story of the invasion by German forces of the Brest Fortress in the Soviet Union in 1941 and is directed by Alexander Kott. The story focuses on the one siege upon the fortress, kicking off with a surprise attack and then never letting up for the entire two hour runtime.
The relentless of the film is striking, starting...

Kazakhstan's submission to the Foreign Language Oscar race, Akan Satayev's Strayed is a spartan yet strangely compelling trip into one man's personal hell.
Andrey Merzlikin - you know him from Bimmer and Newsmakers - stars as a man who seems to have it all. A beautiful wife. A young son. Enough money to buy an expensive car. But when that car breaks down and strands the three of them in the middle of the vast, desolate steppes, we quickly learn how thin the veneer of success really is. The trio spend the night in the car and when he wakes up Merzlikin's un-named lead character discovers he is alone, his family having disappeared in the night. And now he must find both his family and a way to get them all safely home. But all he can find is a very peculiar father-daughter duo living alone in a small...

One thing that Russian cinema has shown a definite affinity for in recent years is the big war epic. Some have been done in period settings, some have been done blending other genres, some have been at sea. And coming soon will be Alexander Kott's Brest Fortress, a historically based epic starring Andrey Merzlikin from Bimmer and Newsmakers.
The film tells the story of the heroic defense of the Brest fortress in Belarus assaulted by the Nazi in the morning of June 22, 1941. Having been totally outnumbered in soldiers and weapons the citizens of Brest fought to the bitter end for 29 endless days.
The events that took place in the first days of the invasion are depicted with documentary accuracy, the characters are real.
The film features unique footage of that time and the few veterans survived in the battle are involved.
The details will sail you to the big...

Though Russia is by far the most prolific of the former Soviet Union states when it comes to film production it would be a major mistake to overlook other territories in the region as many parts of the Soviet bloc are increasingly ramping up film production. The Ukraine is very much in the game and, increasingly, so is Kazakhstan.
A new Kazakh production, Akan Stayev's Strayed stars Bimmer's Andrey Merzlikin - a personal favorite who may not always be in the best films but is always good in them - as a man on the run from some debts with his wife and young son when their car breaks down in the midst of the vast steppes. They have no choice but to sleep in the car and when he wakes up his wife and son are gone ...

We continue our series of interviews from this year's Tribeca Film Festival with our conversation with Anders Banke, director of the Russian police action movie Newsmakers , which is playing in the festival's Midnight section. Action-packed and even comical at times, the police thriller is a loose remake of Johnnie To's Hong Kong police drama Breaking News , this time set on the streets of Moscow. As the movie begins, plain-clothes officer Major Smirnov (Andrei Merzlikin) has been trailing a group of heavily-armed young thugs, leading to a shoot-out on the streets of Moscow. The gang escapes, leaving another bad imprint on the abilities of Moscow's police to fight crime. Along comes Katya, an ambitious P.R. person (played by Mariya Mashkova), who decides that the best way...
