Splash Mountain, the Disneyland flume ride which has been criticized for racist and stereotyping related to its roots in the 1946 Disney film Song of the South, will officially close at the end of the day today to begin its renovation into an attraction based on the more modern film The Princess and the Frog. Walt Disney World closed its version of the ride in January.
According to Disneyland officials, the renovation project is expected to last more than a year. The re-imagined ride, which will be called Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, is scheduled to open in late 2024. When the attraction closed in Orlando earlier this year, Splash Mountain saw a record wait time of 220 minutes on its final day. It looks like there is a similar turnout at Disneyland today, with some reporting a 200-minute wait by 2 p.m.

Eat your heart out, Austin Butler. As wild as Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis" biopic got at certain points, it's safe to say it never quite managed to top the zaniness on display in "Agent Elvis," Netflix's new animated series that sees the King of Rock and Roll suit up to use his world-famous talents in a slightly different way. We've been following this oddity of a concept for quite some time now, with our first look at the adult-oriented and violent show last year promising the sort of alternate history mayhem that only animation can truly do justice to. Like a cross between "Archer," Hulu's "Hit-Monkey," and other similarly out-there premises, "Agent Elvis" promises to pack quite the punch.
The story sees Elvis secretly recruited by the government to maintain his wildly successful cover story as the legendary entertainer by day, while lending his services to protect his...

As an avid fan of Ru Paul’s Drag Race, I was tremendously excited when it was announced that RuPaul would be staring in a new Netflix show titled Aj and the Queen and it certainly didn’t disappoint. This series follows a down on his kick drag performer Robert who performs as Ruby Red (played by Ru Paul Charles) as he somehow ends up with a ten-year-old stowaway as he tours America trying to rebuild his life.
As you can imagine, Aj and the Queen is a show that contains a lot of Drag Queens – which is fantastic for representation and empowerment for viewers and encourages them to live their best life. It is an incredible thing that drag has made it into a mainstream...

RuPaul‘s new Netflix series Aj and the Queen isn’t just an unlikely buddy comedy. It’s an unlikely everything comedy.
The premiere introduces Ru as Ruby Red, a legendary Manhattan drag queen who announces that she’s leaving the island to open her own drag club in (wait for it) Queens called (wait for it again) Queens in Queens. Even better, she’s going into business with her boyfriend of seven months, the Sonny to her Cher… or so she thinks.

Everyone who left the Samuel Goldwyn Theater Wednesday night was humming. It might have been “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Winnie the Pooh,” “It’s a Small World” or any of a dozen other tunes written over the past 50 years by Richard M. Sherman and his late brother Robert B. Sherman, but they were humming something.
The Motion Picture Academy’s two-and-a-half-hour salute to the songwriters, billed as “The Sherman Brothers: A Hollywood Songbook,” may have been the most joyous celebration in that theater in recent memory. Multiple standing ovations and a warm, infectious feeling of Disney-fueled happiness were the order of the evening.
The Shermans — Dick, who just turned 90, and his brother Bob, who died in 2012 — penned some of the most memorable movie songs in history, many of them for Walt Disney. As Dick Van Dyke, reminiscing about being on the set of “Mary Poppins,” put it, “there was...

Just when I thought The CW’s prime time lineup couldn’t sustain yet another DC TV show, the first trailer for Black Lightning premiered a few months ago and I thought to myself, “yeah, there’s room for one more.” Combining striking visuals that Greg Berlanti’s superhero series have become known for with real world sensibilities, it should definitely make for some compelling television.

"...'Tobias Whale' (Michael Leon Wooley) is the most powerful gangster in Gotham City, and, after years of trying, 'Batman' just got the evidence to put him away. But Whale is not going to be harpooned easily. After his lawyer tells 'Lieutenant Gordon' to free Whale or else, the gangster has 'Barbara Gordon' (Tara Strong) kidnapped and held in 'The Cauldron,' the most dangerous part of Gotham.
"Even the cops are afraid of this place, but not Batman. With the help of 'Alfred and 'Katana', they stage a raid on the Cauldron, which is populated by a frightening group of thugs called 'the Ghosts.' As it turns out, the Ghosts aren't the most fearsome threat, as Barbara is guarded by a dangerous figure with a flaming head, who calls himself 'Phosphorous Rex'.

Is it really already time for the "Ugly Americans" season finale? Time sure flies when we're having fun. And you know what else flies? Manbirds! Which are the subject of the finale, in which Mark takes the gang to the Museum of Natural History to learn about the South Pacific's best kept secret.
The series, which airs at 10:30 pm following “South Park”, follows Mark (voiced by Matt Oberg), an employee of the “Department of Integration,” as he helps new citizens, both human and "other," adapt to the hectic life in New York City. Between his stressful job, a zombie roommate and a demon girlfriend, Mark’s lucky if he can sneak in a few minutes of sleep.

This is the review of The Princess and the Frog, directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, starring Anika Noni Rose, Bruno Campos, Jennifer Cody, Jim Cummings, Keith David, Michael-Leon Wooley and Peter Bartlett. The Princess and the Frog, the latest offering from the Disney studios, is set in the French Quarter of New Orleans during the ‘Jazz Age’ and don’t you know it from the opening sequence to the closing credits, with bustling Mardi Gras scenery and new, but somewhat familiar, sounding show tunes as the film is scored by Disney stalwart Randy Newman.

Walt Disney's The Princess and the Frog received much attention in the build up to its theatrical release last year. That was largely because it is the studio's first hand-drawn animated feature for several years. It was well worth the wait. It may not be quite on the level of classics such as The Jungle Book and The Aristocats but The Princess and the Frog unquestionably deserves to be recognised as one of Disney's best musical animated adventures. Thankfully, Walt Disney Home Entertainment has done justice to that by giving us a Blu-ray fit for the best Disney film since Wall-e.

Chicago – The importance of Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog” should not be underestimated in that it not only successfully brought back hand-drawn, 2D animation in an era dominated by CGI but it presented an American fairy tale for African-American children and adults everywhere. It’s a lovely little film with a few flaws that are easy to overlook with such a marvelous Blu-ray presentation.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
Only the most cynical critic could look at the video transfer of “The Princess and the Frog” with its bright colors, perfect line detail, and gorgeous backdrops and not marvel at one of the best-looking releases of the year to date. At home, “Princess” is a more beautiful film than I remember it being in theaters and it’s starting to feel like Disney films might actually be a more complete experience on Blu-ray than they are on celluloid.

Stars: Anika Noni Rose, Bruno Campos, Keith David, Michael-Leon Wooley | Written and directed by Ron Clements & John Musker
In a story borrowed and adapted from E.D. Baker’s The Frog Princess, Disney’s The Princess and the Frog is a fairy tale set in Jazz Age-era New Orleans, and tells the story of a young girl named Tiana (Rose) who has a fateful kiss with a frog prince who desperately wants to be human again, but in true Disney fairy tale style there’s a twist to the tale… and an evil villain in the grandest Disney tradition!
The Princess and the Frog features a stirring jazz soundtrack and a touch of Disney magic, bucking today’s trend for CGI and 3D, and in the end is something rarely seen on the big screen and this day in age – a traditional animated Disney movie…...

Disney's return to the fairytale, The Princess and the Frog, comes out here on February 5, but in case you can't wait until then, here's a spiffy new poster from the film to tide you over, showing all the major characters and showcasing the gorgeous animation. For those of you who haven't seen it yet or toured around Walt Disney Animation Studios learning all about it (ahem), here's a handy guide to the characters. In the centre is Tiana (Anika Noni Rose), hard-working waitress with a dream of opening her own restaurant. On her palm is the froggy form of Prince Naveen (Bruno Campos), who got himself trans-frog-rified by voodoo man Dr Facilier (Keith David), top right. On the left is voodoo lady Mama Odie (Jenifer Lewis) and her snake Juju, alongside Cajun firefly Ray (Jim Cummings), and that's trumpet-playing alligator Louis (Michael-Leon Wooley) along the bottom. It's all directed by Ron Clements and John Musker,...

In a cinematic sense, there are few things more frustrating than not being able to wholeheartedly praise a movie that's drawn with good intentions and brings back the mind-blowingness of classic 2D hand-drawn animation. It's easy to love Disney's The Princess and the Frog, but much of this affection results from the nostalgia of the movie's visuals and an audience's willingness to get lost in the rapture of the final act. To bring things into perspective, I must stress that the female protagonist, Tiana (Anika Noni Rose), starts out as an independent, hard-working woman but eventually loses her way and decides that, above all, the ultimate happiness comes from capturing the right man. It doesn't even matter if this man is nothing but a ne'er do well slacker playboy, for love is simply enough to carry the day, and the rest falls into place. Perhaps even more exasperating is that...

The Princess and the Frog soundtrack. In the early years of the 21st century it appeared that the hand-drawn animated feature was operating on borrowed time. While the pencil lines of Treasure Planet and Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas were stinking out the box-office, audiences were lapping up the CG-antics of Ice Age and anything at all bearing the Pixar seal. In America at least, traditional animation seemed destined to go the way of the woolly mammoth, the penny farthing, and Axl Rose’s humility - relegated to the status of historical curiosity. Computers were the shiny, shiny future of cartoon film-making, and any Luddite pencil-wielders who didn’t like it could naff off and go listen to an eight-track, while burning a witch, and moaning about the increasing influx of marauding Viking immigrants.

I may seem overtly cynical and critical of today's movies, but it's only because I care about quality when it comes to shelling out a few clams for a film. There was a time, long before my fingers even touched a keyboard, where studios and producers were true showman and labored long and hard to craft memorable pieces of entertainment. There are many artisans today who hold the same ideals, but they are few and far between, often having their works lost in the sea of stories and premises recycled over and over again. We the audience should demand to get our money's worth and more, not shrug our shoulders and give a pass to movies that are barely decent compared to all the other crap.
