“Where the Crawdads Sing” has gathered quite a list of names associated with the film adaptation of Delia Owens’ bestselling novel, which was published in 2018. Reese Witherspoon spotlighted the book as one of the earliest picks in her book club, and then her production company Hello Sunshine signed on to adapt the book for the big screen through Lucy Alibar’s screenplay.
Directed by Olivia Newman, the story weaves together several complex themes, including coming of age, survival and a murder mystery. Taylor Swift even wrote a song for the film after reading Owens’ novel because she was so inspired by the story: “Carolina,” which released June 23, echoes Owens’ naturalistic writing with a haunting melody.
Fans of the book, Reese Witherspoon, Taylor Swift and/or actress Daisy Edgar Jones may be wondering how to watch the upcoming film adaptation. We have all the details below.

With Sony’s film adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing, writer Lucy Alibar and director Olivia Newman faced the challenge of turning Delia Owens’ nearly 400-page best-selling novel into a two-hour movie that would connect with audiences.
While reviews have been poor (Where the Crawdads Sing currently has 34 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes), the film opened to 17 million at the domestic box office and more than doubled that domestically a week later.
The film, like the book, tells a coming-of-age story about an abandoned girl growing up in the North Carolina marsh as she learns to fend for herself and experiences love and heartbreak. That tale is coupled with a mystery as the young woman, Kya (Daisy Edgar-Jones), becomes the prime suspect in the murder of local golden boy Chase Andrews (Harris Dickinson...

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for both the film and the novel, “Where the Crawdads Sing.”]
With a simple plot attempting to harken back to the central court case of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Delia Owens’ 2018 novel “Where the Crawdads Sing” became a bestseller and caught the attention of mega-producer Reese Witherspoon, who scooped up the adaptation rights under her Hello Sunshine production banner.
“Where the Crawdads Sing” centers on Kya Clark, derisively referred to by her community as “Marsh Girl,” who was left to fend for herself along the North Carolina coast as a young girl. Upon becoming a teenager and being romantically involved with two men from town, Kya finds herself in the center of a murder trial in 1969 after one of her beaus is found dead following an attempted assault.
The Sony film, opening on July 15, stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as the (seemingly) wrongfully-accused Kya; the film is helmed by “First Match” director Olivia Newman with a script by “Beasts...

Sometimes a movie will turn softer than you thought it would — more sunny and upbeat and romantic, with a happier ending. Then there’s the kind of movie that turns darker than you expect, with an ominous undertow and an ending that kicks you in the shins. “Where the Crawdads Sing” is the rare movie that conforms to both those dynamics at once.
Adapted from Delia Owens’ debut novel, which has sold 12 million copies since it was published in 2018, the movie is about a young woman whose identity is mired in physical and spiritual harshness. Kya Clark (Daisy Edgar-Jones) has grown up all by herself in a shack on a marshy bayou outside Barkley Cove, N.C. When we meet her, it’s 1969 and she’s being put on trial for murder. A young man who Kya was involved with has fallen to his death from a six-story fire tower.

Where the Crawdads Sing is the kind of tedious moral fantasy that fuels America’s misguided idealism. It’s an attempt at a complex tale about rejection, difference and survival. But the film, like the novel it’s based on, skirts the issues — of race, gender and class — that would texture its narrative and strengthen its broad thesis, resulting in a story that says more about how whiteness operates in a society allergic to interdependence than it does about how communities fail young people.
Directed by Olivia Newman (First Match), the film adaptation of Delia Owens’ popular and controversial novel of the same name tells the remarkable tale of a shy, reclusive girl raised in the marshes of North Carolina who finds herself embroiled in a grisly police investigation. With the help of Reese Witherspoon and her book club, Delia Owens’ novel “Where the Crawdads Sing” has been adapted into a film. Reese’s Book Club designated the novel as a selection back when it was first published in 2018, rocketing it up the NY Times Bestseller list.
The movie will bring to life the story of a young girl, abandoned by her family, who learns to live on her own in her family’s old shack in the marsh in 1960s North Carolina. The girl grows into a clever young woman who knows how to fend for herself and love off the land. Her life becomes a bit more complicated when romance enters the picture, and the story takes a sharp turn.

Sony has released a new trailer for “Where the Crawdads Sing,” an upcoming thriller set to hit theaters July 15. The film, which is based off the novel of the same name by Delia Owens, follows Kya (Daisy Edgar-Jones) — a young woman from the North Carolina marshes who becomes a suspect in the murder of a man she was once involved with.
“I fell so deeply in love with the world that Delia created, she has such a poetry to her writing. And her characters are so incredibly special, and deep and complex — particularly Kya, of course,” said Edgar-Jones in a video post promoting the film on “Where the Crawdads Sing’s” Instagram last February. “I would describe Kya as fiercely resilient, wonderfully curious and strong. And I just feel so privileged and excited to be playing her.”

Alameda County district attorney Nancy O’Malley announced today that they are reopening the investigation of the 2009 shooting of Oscar Grant, who was killed on New Year’s Day by Bay Area Rapid Transit (Bart) police officer Johannes Mehserle at the Fruitvale Station in Oakland, Calif. The case was the subject in Ryan Coogler’s 2013 film Fruitvale Station.
Mehserle claimed he grabbed his gun instead of his taser. He was charged with murder but an L.A. County jury found him with involuntary manslaughter and he only served 11 months.
According to the Associated Press and the San Jose Mercury, the news was made after Grant’s family asked O’Malley to investigate the role of Officer Anthony Pirone in his death. Grant’s family said that they wanted charges filed against the former officer who pinned Grant down with a knee to his neck. A 2009 Bart police internal investigation report released...

The story focuses on a blind woman who is given back the gift of sight after losing it when she was a kid. "What if you woke up in another world." Yeah, what if?! MarVista Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for an indie thriller titled Sleepwalker, described as a "Twilight Zone-esque" story about a woman troubled by bouts of sleepwalking and disturbing nightmares. Ahna O'Reilly stars as Sarah, a graduate student, who wakes up in a slightly different version of her world every time she sleepwalks. With the help of sleep researcher Scott White, she tries to work her way back to the reality she started in. The cast includes Richard Armitage (from The Hobbit!), Haley Joel Osment (from A.I.!), Izabella Scorupco, Kevin Zegers, and Rachel Melvin. This doesn't look that great, especially with that Flatliners remake this year. Here's the official trailer (+ two posters) for Elliott Lester's Sleepwalker, direct from YouTube: Troubled by bouts of sleepwalking and disturbing nightmares, graduate student Sarah Foster (Ahna O'Reilly) goes to her university sleep research center for help.

James Franco has signed on to adapt the murder mystery novel The Killer Next Door.
The actor will work with Ahna O'Reilly on the project based on the book by Alex Marwood, according to Variety.
The story follows six neighbours who are forced into a shaky alliance with each other, not knowing a murderer is amongst them who will go to any lengths to keep their activities a secret.
There is no word yet on whether Franco will be starring in or directing the film, but it's possible he will fill both roles.
Franco has also been working on The Long Home, an adaption of the William Gay novel starring Josh Hutcherson, which he will produce, direct and star in.
Franco recently appeared in True Story with Jonah Hill, which was released in the Us earlier this year and hits the UK on July 24. Watch a trailer below:...

I was originally going to see James Franco's William Faulkner adaptation The Sound and Fury in Toronto on Friday, but I think I'm opting to see the Viggo Mortensen starrer Far from Men instead. After all, I doubt it will be long before this one is streaming or at least available domestically while Far from Men may take a little longer to find itself a domestic distributor. That said, the first clip from Franco's new movie has arrived as it will be having its world premiere this Friday at the Venice Film Festival, followed by a North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday. I caught Franco's previous Faulkner adaptation As I Lay Dying at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival (read the review here) and it was an intriguing experimental piece, but the pace at which he churns these things out makes me wonder just how much...

It's not a film festival without James Franco unveiling a short film, book of poetry, feature effort, art installation or something, and so the polymath is rolling into Venice with "The Sound And The Fury." Yep, the work of William Faulkner is getting the Franco treatment, again, and the first clip is here to give you a sampling of how it all turns out. Joey King, Tim Blake Nelson, Ahna O'Reilly, Seth Rogen, Danny McBride, Scott Haze, Jon Hamm and Franco himself all appear in this saga about the lives and intrigues of the southern Compson family, who find themselves in decline. This clip reveals that Franco has dropped the split-screen stylization of his previous Faulkner effort, "As I Lay Dying," and as a result, the drama appears more direct and intense. Overall, it seems more accomplished than that the previous effort too, so we're curious to see if Franco nailed it this time out.

As previously reported by my HitFix colleagues, 2014’s fall festivals represent something of a battle royale for various heavyweight Oscar hopefuls. The oldest fest in the big four, venerable Venice, is up against younger North American counterparts Toronto, Telluride and New York in the perennial fight to deliver a truly memorable Competition. Which films will be left standing once the critics have had their way with them? Contenders hoping to emerge victorious from La Biennale’s royal rumble include Alejandro González Iñárritu’s opening nighter "Birdman" starring Michael Keaton, David Gordon Green’s Al Pacino vehicle "Manglehorn" and Andrew Garfield vs Michael Shannon in Ramin Bahrani’s real estate showdown "99 Homes." As far as awards season goes, for me the big hitter to beat from Cannes is "Foxcatcher," an extraordinary and illuminating piece of filmmaking from Bennett Miller, a director I’ve not been personally persuaded by before now. In the documentary category,...

Alongside Cormac McCarthy, William Faulkner is the author of most interest to James Franco. Last year, Franco went to Cannes with his adaptation of "As I Lay Dying," which utilized split screens to capture to the many voices encompassing the story's narrative simultaneously. And while it remains to be seen what aesthetic tricks Franco will bring to his latest Faulkner-derived project, "The Sound And The Fury," the first batch of images from the movie indicate his inclinations. In typical Franco fashion, he's starring in and directing the picture, and he's also called up pals Seth Rogen and Danny McBride for roles alongside Joey King, Tim Blake Nelson, Ahna O'Reilly and more. Here's the official synopsis: Directed by and starring Academy Award nominee James Franco, The Sound and The Fury captures the lives and passions of the Compsons, a once proud Southern family caught in a tragic spiral of loss and misfortune.

Despite his work being sometimes tepidly received at all corners of the globe, James Franco, the filmmaker, has been a major force on the world festival stage. He'll be showing up at Venice once again this year with his William Faulkner adaptation "The Sound and the Fury," but while he's there he'll be picking up some hardware. The festival has announced that Franco has been awarded the Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker prize, dedicated to a personality who has made an original contribution to innovation in contemporary cinema. Calling the multi-hyphenate a "relentless 'manufacturer' of cultural imagery" (problem a great, non-value-judgment way of putting it), Venice Film Festival director Alberto Barbera said that Franco "is one of the most versatile and multi-talented auteurs on the current American scene, as an actor in cinema and theatre, director, screenwriter, producer, soap-opera star, video-artist and much more." Barbera went on to note that Franco's latest,...

The 200th episode of "How I Met Your Mother" will take a trip down memory lane -- although for once, it's not relying on Ted's memory.
Monday's (Jan. 27) show, "How Your Mother Met Me," will follow the Mother (Cristin Milioti) and see what she's been up to for the past eight years -- including a few times she almost crossed paths with her future husband, Ted (Josh Radnor).
"Cristin is amazing in it, and there are a lot of fun intersections between her life and our gang," co-creator Craig Thomas says. "So our gang is in that episode, but really it's her episode, and I feel that kicks off the endgame of the season and the series where you're going to see more of her and Ted and learn more about them."
Among the near misses in Monday's show is a flashback to Season 3's "No Tomorrow," where Ted has...

My father used to say that the reason for livin' was to get ready to stay dead a long time.
There aren't many authors out there with the same kind of hard, dark reputation as William Faulkner. He wrote a few screenplays but his major works have gone unadapted for feature films until James Franco decided he was the man for the job. The result is As I Lay Dying (2013), the story of the Bundren clan's journey to bury their mother. The patriarch, Anse (Tim Blake Nelson), is just barely holding onto his control of the family and his decisions as frequently lead to disaster as...well, really it's just disaster. The grown boys, Darl (James Franco), Cash (Jim Parrack), Jewel (Logan Marshall-Green), and the child Vardaman (Brady Permenter), go along with it, but they've all got some loose screws and their sister Dewey Dell (Ahna O'Reilly) ain't much better.

Ahna O'Reilly really knows a thing or two about working with James Franco. Not only has she known him for years (they even dated), but she also worked with him on his feature-length debut, As I Lay Dying, which comes out on video on demand today and will be available on DVD on Nov. 5. We got a chance to talk to Ahna about working on the film adaptation of the classic of the same name by William Faulkner and learned about her new literature-related project with James. Looking forward to seeing James Franco's film adaptation of the classic Faulkner novel, "As I Lay Dying" in theaters? Seems you won't have your chance because the film, which premiered at Cannes last year, will be going straight to iTunes, VOD, iVOD and DVD, The Hollywood Reporter reports. Directed and co-written by Franco (along with Matt Rager), the film also stars Tim Blake Nelson, Danny McBride, Logan Marshall-Green and Ahna O'Reilly. It was originally slated to open theatrically on Sept. 27, but instead, Millenium will release the film directly on iTunes on Oct. 22, and on VOD/iVOD and DVD on Nov. 5. Given the challenging source material about an impoverished Mississippi family struggling to give its recently deceased matriarch an appropriate burial, it's not entirely surprising that the film won't be hitting theaters. In his review of the film from Cannes, Boyd van Hoeij wrote, "Given that the original novel has...

Kristal, a fan of Country and Bluegrass dreamed of having a club in the lower Eastside that catered to that kind of music, when he had difficulty booking those bands he turned to other kinds of rock music. Steven Jobs, the late CEO and co-founder of Apple, was a fascinating man. His personal and professional life had elements intriguing and enchanting, thus making his story inspirational and motivating.
The film "Jobs" attempts to demystify this genius starting from the myth and working its way back, showing the hard work and heartbreak that he endured. The narration begins in 2001, with a frail and lanky Jobs moving with an awkward gait on the podium. He delivers a straight-faced speech and with diffused.
