Quentin Tarantino was nowhere to be found in the Tcl Chinese Theater on Thursday night, but his brilliance was a constant topic of conversation as Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, and Harvey Keitel reunited on stage to celebrate the 30th anniversary of “Pulp Fiction.”
The 15th annual TCM Classic Film Festival kicked off with a 35mm screening of Tarantino’s landmark sophomore film, which won the 1994 Palme d’Or and led the filmmaker to his first Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. With the film industry still reeling from the news that the legendary auteur is scrapping his planned tenth film “The Movie Critic,” his repeat collaborators were eager to shower him with compliments as they discussed his impact on the trajectory of their careers.

John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson and Harvey Keitel reunited at the TCM Classic Film festival on Thursday for a 30th anniversary screening of Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” to reflect on the film’s impact on their careers — and upon the medium itself.
“It changed cinema, so it’s almost hard to have it sink in,” observed Uma Thurman, who joined Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta and Harvey Keitel for a Q&a about Tarantino’s benchmark film with Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz. “I feel like I’ve had an evolving and beautifully growing relationship with ‘Pulp Fiction’ all of my life. It changed cinema, and it changed every filmmaker I met since.”

John Ford, the iconic director known for such films as Stagecoach, The Grapes of Wrath, My Darling Clementine, The Searchers and much more, will be the subject of the next edition of the TCM podcast The Plot Thickens, it was announced Wednesday.
“Decoding John Ford,” hosted by Ben Mankiewicz, premieres June 6. The fifth season of the podcast, consisting of seven episodes, will feature never-before-heard archival interviews with the likes of John Wayne, Katharine Hepburn, Henry Fonda, James Stewart, Woody Strode and Ford himself.
TCM says Mankiewicz will “strip back the mythology to reveal Ford’s brilliance — alongside the often ugly, uncomfortable truths about his life and movies, asking whether we can ever truly separate art from the artist.”
“John Ford is a mercurial figure. Not surprisingly given his stature, the stereotypes about Ford are incomplete,” the host said in a statement. “This is a man defined by contradictions: he revered...

There's an assumption, especially nowadays in the post-Judd Apatow filmmaking era, that comedies are great big improv fests. A finished script is nice and all, but when you put a bunch of funny people together, you'd be loath not to let them riff up a storm; give yourself a multitude of options in the edit, and, provided your cast brings their A game, you'll wind up finding the funniest possible version of your movie. It's comedy Cassavetes!
This is, of course, nonsense. While great actors are capable of improving a scene via a sudden bolt of inspiration -- be it dramatic or comedic -- you don't waltz into a production with a bare template in the hopes that your cast will deliver inspired daily punch-ups. You plan the living hell out of your movie because you've got to make days; falling behind schedule means going over budget, and unless...

When the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opened in 2021, many Academy members and cultural critics were shocked and outraged to discover that one of the few marginalized groups whose contributions to Hollywood were not highlighted within its walls was the Jewish community, especially because most of the founders of the business were Jewish.
The leaders of the Academy and its museum heard the feedback loud and clear, and announced on Thursday that they will debut the museum’s first permanent exhibition, Hollywoodland: Jewish Founders and the Making of a Movie Capital, in its Laika Gallery, on May 19.
The exhibition, which “tells the origin story of filmmaking in early 20th century Los Angeles, spotlighting the impact of the predominately Jewish filmmakers whose establishment of the American film studio system transformed Los Angeles into a global epicenter of cinema,” was put together by Dara Jaffe, associate curator, with support from Gary Dauphin,...

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is unveiling the details of its exhibit, “Hollywoodland: Jewish Founders and the Making of a Movie Capital,” that opens on May 19.
The exhibit, which will be the Los Angeles museum’s first permanent installation, comes after criticism that the Jewish executives and creatives who built Hollywood were not prominently featured among the Academy’s splashy exhibits after its 2021 opening.
Presented in English and Spanish, the exhibit will tell the origin story of early 20th century filmmaking in Los Angeles, with a focus on the impact of the predominantly Jewish filmmakers who created the studio system.
Neal Gabler, author of “An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood” is an advisor for the exhibition, which is curated by Dara Jaffe, associate curator, with support from Gary Dauphin, former associate curator of digital presentations, and Josue L. Lopez, research assistant.

For those of us who remember going to the movies in 1977, we were treated to Star Wars, Smokey And The Bandit, The Spy Who Loved Me, Airport 77, The Car, Orca and Capricorn One. There was a rich wealth of movies to choose from and a time when audiences in their local cinemas would cheer and clap for the heroes. Then on December 14, 1977, coming off the success of Jaws, that director Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi masterpiece graced the screens. Close Encounters Of The Third Kind was the filmmaker’s next movie and, along with star Richard Dreyfuss and the magnificent score from composer John Williams, took audiences on a journey of mankind’s first meeting with aliens and let us know we are not alone in the universe.

Those attending the 15th annual TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood next month will have an opportunity to engage with Mel Brooks and Vitaphone, both born in 1926. One’s extinct, the other’s still going strong.
While Brooks, 97, will be on hand for a closing-night screening of his 1987 comedy Spaceballs, six Vitaphone vaudeville shorts from the 1920s will be projected in 35mm, with sound played back from their original 16-inch discs on a turntable designed and engineered by Warner Bros.’ postproduction engineering department.
Also announced Thursday:
• Steven Spielberg will participate in a Q&a with Howard Suber — the UCLA faculty member at the center of the recent six-part TCM documentary The Power of Film — ahead of a director’s cut of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977);
• Nancy Meyers and Alexander Payne, respectively, will introduce world premiere restorations of Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest (1959) and John Ford’s The Searchers...

After a second man was charged in connection with the theft of a pair of ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz, the shoes worn by Judy Garland are going up for auction.
Collector Michael Shaw, who owned the slippers when they were stolen, was reunited with the priceless piece from the 1939 film on Sunday during a private ceremony at the Judy Garland Museum. He had loaned the pair to the museum in August 2005 for what was meant to be a 10-week viewing tied to the annual Judy Garland Festival, but the shoes were swiped a week later.
Upon receiving the sequin-covered shoes nearly 20 years later, Shaw has decided to hand them to Heritage Auctions, which will take the famed slippers on a world tour, including stops in Los Angeles, New York City, London and Tokyo. Afterwards, the shoes will go up for auction in December.

Turner Classic Movies, the leading authority and definitive home of classic film, will celebrate its 30th anniversary on April 14, 2024. To honor the milestone, TCM will present on-air programming salutes featuring TCM staff who were there from the very beginning, as well as a 24-hour marathon of films with historical introductions from TCM’s first host and champion, Robert Osborne.

How many other channels’ fans know where they were the day a network launched?” says TCM Primetime Host Ben Mankiewicz. “I’m not sure either of those things are true without Robert Osborne. Turner Classic Movies will turn 30 on April 14, 2024. That’s right: It’ll be 30 years since Ted Turner flipped the switch — flanked by Old Hollywood legends Arthur Hiller, Arlene Dahl, Jane Powell, Celeste Holm, and Van Johnson — right in the middle of Times Square to turn the network “on.”
Also with Turner that day was the man who’d become TCM’s longtime host, Robert Osborne, then just 61. A veteran columnist for The Hollywood Reporter, Osborne had become known as a close friend to many of the surviving stars of yesteryear ever since he was photographed kissing Bette Davis’s hand during a Golden Globes broadcast in the late ’70s. He’d go on to host the intros and outros for most of TCM’s primetime lineup for close to 23 years after that launch date, until he died in March 2017 at 84.
For so many TCM fans, Robert Osborne was the network.

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins signed on to helm Rogue Squadron more than three years ago, but the project hasn’t made much progress since then, with multiple delays amid reports that Jenkins was butting heads creatively with Lucasfilm. The film was finally removed from the schedule in 2022, but Jenkins has now said she’s signed a new deal to return.
While speaking with Ben Mankiewicz on the Talking Pictures podcast, Jenkins explained that she left Rogue Squadron to develop Wonder Woman 3, but when that project fell apart, she returned to Star Wars.
“When I left Star Wars to do Wonder Woman 3, I thought maybe I’ll come back to Star Wars after Wonder Woman 3,” Jenkins said. “So we did a deal for that to happen, started a deal, but I thought I was doing Wonder Woman 3. So when Wonder Woman 3 went away, Lucasfilm and I were like, ‘oh, we gotta finish this deal.

Director Damien Chazelle became the youngest recipient of the Oscar for Best Director when he won the coveted award for his musical romance La La Land. He has helmed multiple critical darlings such as Whiplash and First Man, which have given him the status of a modern-day auteur due to certain directorial trademarks that he employs in his films.
While he had an amazing record at the box office and during Awards season with the above-mentioned films, he seemed to have missed the mark with his last film Babylon. Starring Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and Diego Calva, the film was a box office disaster. Chazelle recently mentioned that he might not be able to make his next film due to Babylon’s failure.

In Hollywood, they say you’re only as good as your last credit.
Damien Chazelle is weighing what that means for him following the box office failure of his big-budget film Babylon starring Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt and Diego Calva. Made for a reported $80 million before marketing costs, the Paramount Pictures release opened to a disastrous $3.6 million before topping out at $15.3 million domestic. With international grosses, it finished at $63.4 million worldwide.
“Certainly, in financial terms, Babylon didn’t work at all,” the Oscar-winning filmmaker told Ben Mankiewicz during an interview on his podcast, Talking Pictures. “You try to not have that affect what you’re doing creatively, but, at some level, it can’t help but affect it. But maybe that’s Ok? I have [a] very mixed mind about it. Who knows? Maybe I won’t be able to get this one made. I have no idea. We’ll have to wait and see.

About a decade ago, Damien Chazelle was Hollywood’s hottest young filmmaker. His indie hit “Whiplash” made tens of millions of dollars in profit and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. He followed it up with “La La Land,” which earned hundreds of millions in profit and made him the youngest Best Director Oscar winner ever at age 32. He was riding high. But what goes up must come down.
His next film, 2018’s “First Man,” underperformed at the box office and the Oscars. And 2022’s “Babylon” was an outright flop, losing money, winning no Academy Awards, and earning mixed reviews from critics and a fair amount of derision for its three-hour runtime and over-the-top spectacle – this despite a loyal hive of fans who remain convinced it will age like a lost masterpiece. Regardless, it was the kind of exercise in excess that can derail a director...

Jodie Foster, the two-time Oscar-winning actress riding high off her performances in Nyad and True Detective: Night Country, will be honored with a hand and footprint ceremony during the TCM Classic Film Festival, it was announced Tuesday.
Foster, 61, will leave her mark in cement in the courtyard of the iconic Tcl Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard on Friday, April 19 during the 15th annual event.
“The truth is Jodie Foster deserves a hand and footprint ceremony solely for her work in 1976 alone — films she made when she was 13 years old — Taxi Driver, Bugsy Malone, Freaky Friday and The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane. You could see her range already,” said TCM host Ben Mankiewicz in a statement.
“Nearly 50 years later, we have an answer to this question: ‘What is a Jodie Foster character?’ The answer is: There is nothing she can’t play. If you want evidence of that,...

Emerald Fennell is sharing one of her favorite “complicated” sexy onscreen relationships ever, and it’s none other than the dark, obsessive dynamic found in Martin Scorsese’s “Cape Fear.” During Turner Classic Movie’s “Talking Pictures: A Movie Memories Podcast,” hosted by Ben Mankiewicz, “Saltburn” filmmaker Fennell revealed her twisted love for Robert De Niro and Juliette Lewis’ onscreen relationship in Scorsese’s 1991 film.
While Fennell noted that the 1962 original starring Robert Mitchum is her preferred iteration of the story (both films were adaptations of 1957 book “The Executioners” by John D. Macdonald), she cited the scene in Scorsese’s feature in which De Niro’s character stalks Lewis at her high school as a favorite.
“I was obsessed with the remake, because the scene where Robert De Niro comes to the high school to seduce Juliette Lewis, it’s one of the sexiest things I’ve ever seen, which is very complicated,...

Updated, Sunday Am: Wonka had a very strong hold on Saturday with $14M, just -3% off from Friday/Thursday previews’ $14.4M resulting in an estimated $39M opening, which is slightly north of the $35.3M start that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse did back in the same mid-December slot in 2018. Cari Beauchamp, the respected film historian who put readers and viewers in close touch with the early days of Hollywood through her painstaking research as an author, editor and documentary filmmaker, died Thursday. She was 74.
Beauchamp died of natural causes at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, her son Jake Flynn told The Hollywood Reporter.
She was unable to attend an Oct. 28 event at the Tcl Chinese Theatre that celebrated authors represented on THR’s recent unveiling of “The 100 Greatest Film Books of All Time.”
Beauchamp is on the exclusive list thanks to Without Lying Down: Frances Marion and the Powerful Women of Early Hollywood. First published in 1997, it centers on Marion, who became the highest-paid screenwriter, man or woman, in Hollywood by 1917 before receiving Oscars for The Big House (1930) and The Champ (1931).
Beauchamp then wrote and produced for TCM a 2001 documentary based on the book, earning a WGA nomination along the way.

What’s so inspiring and energizing about Steven Spielberg is that he isn’t just one of the greatest filmmakers ever, he’s an eclectic cinephile who talks about his favorite films with the boyish enthusiasm of a fan.
So he was a natural fit, alongside Martin Scorsese and Paul Thomas Anderson, for the advisory panel that came together in June to support Turner Classic Movies. So he was a natural fit, alongside Martin Scorsese and Paul Thomas Anderson, for the advisory panel that came together in June to support Turner Classic Movies. As part of that role, he’s recorded his first “Spielberg’s Picks” video, a recommendations list of his personal faves from the September 2023 TCM lineup. Watch the video above, an IndieWire exclusive, for not just his choices, but his incisive comments.

David Zaslav has at last made a good decision with regards to the film history he acquired more than a year ago via the creation of Warner Bros. Discovery. The fact that Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, and Paul Thomas Anderson were metaphorically leaning over his shoulder is probably not a coincidence. However he got there though, it seems the small but indispensable cable network that is Turner Classic Movies has been spared a total ransacking by its new corporate owners.
The news became official Wednesday afternoon with the announcement that rather than staying totally under the control of Wbd TV Networks, creative decisions regarding the classic cinema network will now fall under the oversight of Warner Bros. Pictures bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy (Wbd TV will still control TCM’s budget). Further, after being ousted just last week from TCM by Wbd’s cable network C-Suite, longtime chief TCM programmer,...

Warner Bros. Pictures heads Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy are taking oversight of Turner Classic Movies, an individual with knowledge of the matter confirmed Friday to TheWrap.
The leadership change follows the exit of TCM chief Pola Changnon and layoffs of several other members of the network’s top brass. The departures came amid cuts of 100 staffers across Warner Bros. Discovery’s U.S. Networks Group this week, led by chairman and chief content officer Kathleen Finch.
Following Changnon’s departure on Tuesday, Finch said in a memo to staff that Michael Ouweleen, the president of Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Discovery Family and Boomerang who had previously run TCM on an interim basis for eight months in 2019 and 2020, would take oversight of the network.
Just hours later, TheWrap exclusively reported that TCM’s senior vice president of programming and content strategy Charles Tabesh, vice president of studio production Anne Wilson,...

As TCM viewers and classic movie lovers mourned and hoped for the best following this week’s massive layoffs at the network, TCM host Dave Karger and other colleagues spoke out for the first time to express heartache and frustration over the losses in leadership.
“My goal (and I know the other hosts agree) is to try to be a stabilizing and familiar presence in the months ahead,” Karger tweeted Friday, noting the feeling of uncertainty following Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav‘s move to fire 25-year veteran Pola Changnon and others.
Karger wrote that he is “beyond heartbroken.”
“A note to our passionate TCM viewers: It’s been a tough week to say the least and I’m beyond heartbroken that we are losing so many brilliant colleagues who are also dear friends. I’ve seen all of your support online and it means so much to all of us,...

“All is well,” a headline read in January as hosts of the Turner Classic Movies channel assuaged fans’ fears following upheaval under CEO David Zaslav’s watch at Warner Bros. Discovery. Six months later, TCM’s top executives — including 25-year veteran Pola Changnon — are out and the cable channel’s future seems entirely uncertain.
This week’s changes will see the number of employees at TCM slashed from about 90 to about 20, according to insiders, with the responsibilities of overseeing the network distributed among other units under the Wbd umbrella. Meanwhile, budgets have already been progressively cut at the network, leading many to wonder what the future will bring.
“They’re farming most people out into different departments,” an insider with knowledge of the TCM restructuring told TheWrap. “Michael Ouweleen is now the head of TCM, but he really doesn’t oversee any part of TCM other than the podcasts and the duty of production.
