Shivani Rawat helped rescue “Hotel Mumbai” from the cold grip of Harvey Weinstein. When she saw the drama, which revisits the 2008 terrorist attacks at the famed Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, the finished movie needed a distributor. The prestige picture starring Dev Patel was up for sale after the closure of the Weinstein Co. and the ousting of its namesake mogul, who’d been accused of sexual misconduct by dozens of women.
“When I watched the film, I remember coming out of the room shaking,” says Rawat, a 33-year-old financier and producer. “I wanted to be part of it immediately.” She thought it was important for the sake of the victims that other people see this tragic story.
Rawat co-acquired the rights and decided to release the movie (which expanded nationwide on March 29) with Bleecker Street, the indie label run by Andrew Karpen. It’s the first time that Rawat’s New York-based production company,...

When Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger moved into their new office at the start of the second season of NBC’s “This Is Us,” they brought in furniture conducive to their individual work styles. “I love sitting at a desk and Elizabeth almost never does,” says Aptaker. “She’s always on the couch with her laptop, and I sit at this massive desk by myself.” They also filled the space with mementos to “make it [somewhere] we want to be,” Berger adds. After all, working on the 18-episode family drama has them spending as much, if not more, time there than in their respective homes.
Origin Story
Aptaker and Berger met in a dramatic writing class during their freshman year at NYU and quickly bonded over each other’s work, Berger says. They received a grant to make a pilot, which they shot at the East Village walk-up they also shared.

Amazon Studios have released the trailer for Dan Fogelman’s new drama, Life Itself, which is sure to pull on a few heartstrings.
The film is Fogelman’s second feature film following 2015’s Danny Collins, for which Al Pacino was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor for playing folk singer Steve Tilston.
Also in trailers – Sam Claflin and Shailene Woodley hit stormy weather in first trailer for Adrift
Written and directed by This is Us’ Dan Fogelman the film stars Oscar Isaac, Olivia Wilde, Mandy Patinkin, Olivia Cooke, Laia Costa, Annette Bening and Antonio Banderas.
The film is set for a September 21st release.
Life Itself Official Synopsis
Life Itself centres on a couple (Oscar Isaac and Olivia Wilde) that lead a multi-generational love story spanning both decades and continents, from the streets of New York to the Spanish countryside, and are all connected by a single event.

After mostly focusing on animation, scripting Tangled, Bolt, Cars, and more, Dan Fogelman jumped into live-action with Crazy, Stupid, Love., and then soon followed with his directorial debut Danny Collins, a good-natured, affable showcase for Al Pacino. He’s now returning this fall with Life Itself–no relation to Roger Ebert–starring Oscar Isaac, Olivia Wilde, Mandy Patinkin, Olivia Cooke, Laia Costa, Annette Bening and Antonio Banderas.
Following a trailer debut on This is Us, Fogelman’s hit show, Amazon Studios has released the preview online. The story follows multiple generations and feels a bit like a more conventional version of Cloud Atlas with a heart-on-its-sleeve, wide-reaching scope. Still, Fogelman has proved that he can take on schmaltz with a certain charm, so hopefully that’s the case here. See the preview below.

Dan Fogelman has proved he’s more than capable of telling an epic drama that spans numerous years on his award-winning NBC series “This Is Us,” and now he’s going to attempt something similar on the big screen. Fogelman is the writer and director of “Life Itself,” his second feature film after “Danny Collins.” The film features an all-star ensemble, including Oscar Isaac, Olivia Wilde, Antonio Banderas, Samuel L. Jackson, and more.
The official synopsis from Amazon Studios reads: “‘Life Itself’ centers on a couple (Oscar Isaac and Olivia Wilde) which leads a multigenerational love story spanning both decades and continents, from the streets of New York to the Spanish countryside, and are all connected by a single event.”

With all the intersecting ensemble threads promised for his sophomore film, hopefully Dan Fogelman will better manage the puzzles pieces as we weren’t entirely convinced he was able to fit it all in 2015’s Danny Collins where we mentioned that his return “to this hypertrophic mode of drama wherein potentially insurmountable life tragedies get mushed together to equal one big positive, though kernels of authentic emotions sometimes shine through the contrivances.” Returning to television gigs between features with Pitch and This Is Us, Fogelman’s Life Itself went into production at the beginning of 2017 “from the streets of New York to the Spanish countryside and back” with a rom com that spans the decades.

Right at the tail end of last week, another short list hit the web, this one having to do with Best Original Song. This establishes which tunes from the flicks of 2015 will be eligible for Academy Award nominations. Voters now officially have 74 songs to sift through, all in the name of Oscar consideration. There’s a noticeable snub in the lot, but we’ll get to that later. For now, we’ll focus in a bit with a handful of the songs that seem to be the main contenders here. At the same time though, keep this in mind…it’s really just a shot in the dark with this category. Though there’s no way to be sure, these are the songs I’d be most inclined to assume have a chance at a nod here. There’s “None Of Them Are You” from Anomalisa, “Fighting Stronger” from Creed,...

Best Song Oscar 2016 contender 'Fifty Shades of Grey,' with Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. 74 entries in contention for 2016 Best Song Academy Award 'Tis the season for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to announce the semi-finalists – in some instances, the semi-semi-finalists – for the Academy Awards. Today, the Academy released the list of songs eligible for the 2016 Best Song – or rather, Best Original Song – Oscar. There are 74 contenders, with titles ranging from “Happy” and “I'll See You in My Dreams” to “Hypnosis” and “Bhoomiyilenghanumundo.” Curiously, apart from the inevitable animated and/or kiddie flicks (Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, Anomalisa, Pan, Shaun the Sheep Movie, Home, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water, etc.) most of this year's contenders are songs from smaller movies and Bollywood/South Asian releases. Exceptions include Sam Taylor-Johnson's Fifty Shades of Grey, Ryan Coogler's Creed, Kenneth Branagh's...

It’s familiar fodder for a comedy/drama. Y’know the story of a parent leaving the family unit in order to follow a dream. Then years later, having to return for an uncomfortable, often strained reunion that usually concludes with a big, new extended-family group hug. After a failed attempt (but sometimes successful) at acquiring fame and fortune the prodigal poppa realizes that everything he really desired was right in his back yard. We recently saw this occur in Danny Collins. But this new flick does a switcheroo with that formula. This time mom flew the coop in pursuit of her passions and dreams. Meryl Streep reteams with Jonathan Demme (they remade The Manchurian Candidate a few years ago) to tell Oscar-winning scribe Diablo Cody’s tale of, not speedster superheroes, family and rock n’ roll. Grab a brew and settle in for a solid set from Ricki And The Flash.

There is very little to discuss in terms of new releases this week, especially since I haven't seen the two new Costa-Gravas titles or Rainer Werner Fassbinder title from Criterion, which lead off the "Even More" section below. I have, however, updated the upcoming release schedule with several new titles including Ex Machina, the "Rogue Cut" of X-Men: Days of Future Past, Insurgent and Slow West. Hopefully there's something that catches your eye. The Loft I never saw this, but the way Universal treated it pretty much said all I needed to know. Then I talked to someone that did see it and I know to stay away for good.
Seventh Son This one I did see and it is quite the trainwreck.

Mid-May, when most of the specialized industry is encamped on Cannes' Croisette, is not usually a prime opening date for new limited releases. Only "Frances Ha" in recent years has had a strong or better ($20,000+) per-scree- average this weekend, although later in the month around Memorial Day has seen some huge openings ("Midnight in Paris," "Moonrise Kingdom," "The Tree of Life" leading the way). That creates opportunities for enterprising distributors to take advantage in hopes of getting more attention, better access to top theaters and a clear shot at being top performer of the weekend. "I'll See You in My Dreams" (second release from Bleecker Street, who earlier this year opened "Danny Collins") was one of three older-cast movies in Sundance's Premiere section to be acquired (along with "Grandma" and "A Walk in the Woods," opening later this year from Sony Pictures Classics and Broad Green...

James Wan’s Furious 7 continued defending its position this weekend as the year’s first blockbuster as it earned $29.1 million, winning the box office for the third weekend in a row. The feature also widened its lead as the highest grossing film of 2015 to date, earning more than 2014’s fourth place finisher Captain America: The Winter Soldier in the process.
However, the film was joined by two newcomers in the top 10, as the comedy sequel Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 and the horror feature Unfriended finished in second and third place respectively. This doesn’t happen often: Four of the weekend box office’s top 10 are Specialty releases, while a debuting fifth had the year’s best per-theater average. It also got off to an incredible start in China, where it set the opening day record with $68.8 million. At the domestic box office, Furious 7's 60 percent drop was a slight improvement over Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6, both of which fell over 62 percent in their second frames. Without any serious competition for the next two weeks, the movie is guaranteed to earn at least $350 million total.Worldwide, Furious 7 is already the highest-grossing Fast movie with $801 million. Unexpectedly, four indie breakouts --"Woman in Gold," "It Follows," "While We're Young" and "Danny Collins"--actually placed in this weekend's Top Ten. While this unusual success is partly due to limp studio releases, it shows that the right films backed with smart marketing and reviews are finding audiences in theaters. More impressively, it comes at a time when home viewing options -- both from expanding Video on Demand and strong cable and PBS programming competition -- offer tempting alternatives. Is it a revival? Too early to say. Opening "Ex Machina" (A24) - Criticwire: B+; Metacritic: 77; Festivals include: Gothenberg, South by Southwest 2015 $249,956 in 4 theaters; PSA (per screen average): $62,489 The biggest limited opener of the year (replacing A24's own "While We're Young" just two weeks back) is even more impressive since its appeal -- a sci-fi genre entry with an A.I. storyline -- is younger and...

I'm having a great time visiting my homeland! A little R & R, cherishing family visits, reconnecting with old friends, and appearing at an outlet that's near and dear in my heart -- Mornings @ Anc! I co-hosted the show, introduced my interviews with the cast of "Danny Collins," and sat on the other end of the interview chair talking about my style of interviewing celebrities, film criticism, and the magic of movies!
Here's a part of the article:
Manila, Philippines - Us-based Filipino film critic Manny dela Rosa, aka "Manny the Movie Guy", first got noticed by Filipinos when his interview with Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway went viral.
Unlike a similar interview with the actress done by a local film critic, Hathaway was fun and charming during dela Rosa's interview in December 2012.
She even remarked on dela Rosa's Les Miserables T-shirt, and showed off her engagement ring.

The Divergent Series: Insurgent opened north of $50 million this weekend, which was easily enough to take first place away from Cinderella. The other new openers weren't so hot: The Gunman bombed with $5 million, while Do You Believe? opened to a fraction of God's Not Dead's debut.Insurgent opened to $52.3 million, which is off slightly from its predecessor's $54.6 million on this same weekend last year. While it would have been unreasonable to expect a Twilight type bump from the first to second installment, it did feel like this franchise had some room to grow. Unfortunately, it looks like Divergent will wind up like The Hunger Games and Harry Potter, two young-adult franchises where there just wasn't a ton of domestic gains after the first outing (yes, the final Harry Potter set a high mark for the franchise, but that was a decade later with the addition of 3D pricing).Insurgent's audience was 60 percent female,...

Following strong debuts for "It Follows" and "Going Clear," new releases this weekend returned to the sub-$15,000 per screen average in limited theaters--which usually does not translate to major long term success. The best of the new crop is "Danny Collins," the initial release from promising --and well-financed-- new distributor Bleecker Street, which is targeting the loyal adult arthouse audience. "It Follows," with Radius now committed to a theatrical rather than Video on Demand release, expanded well into ten new markets in advance of its expected wide release this Friday. Meantime, no single initially limited/specialized release grossed more than $500,000 this weekend, the lowest top figure among later-week films in nearly six months. Opening "Danny Collins" (Bleecker Street) - Criticwire: B-; Metacritic: 55 $73,157 in 5 theaters; PSA (per screen average): $14,631 The most important achievement for Bleecker Street--the new...

Not exactly an eventful MPAA bulletin today, but I did learn of a new thriller called Hidden from twin brother writing and directing duo Matt and Ross Duffer starring Alexander Skarsgard and Andrea Riseborough. We also have a rating for Tommy Lee Jones' The Homesman starring Hilary Swank and who could forget the new Kirk Cameron film, Saving Christmas (watch the awful trailer here). I have included the complete bulletin below. Bank$tas Rated R For language, sexual content and some drug use. Captive Rated PG-13 For mature thematic elements involving violence and substance abuse. Christmas On Salvation Street Rated PG For thematic elements. Danny Collins Rated R For language, drug use and some nudity. Dark Games Rated R For violence, some nudity and language. Final Prayer Rated R For language and some frightening moments. Green Street Hooligans: Underground Rated R For brutal street fights, language throughout and a scene of sexuality/nudity.

In advance of the Toronto International Film Festival, Andrew Karpen, former Co-ceo of Focus Features, is launching new distribution company Bleecker Street to be based in New York City. Bleecker CEO Karpen will scout new films at this year’s Tiff; he plans release 3-5 pictures in 2015 and more as time goes on. Breaking: A new major independent film distributor has emerged, just in time for Toronto. Andrew Karpen, the longtime co-ceo of Focus Features, has unveiled Bleecker Street, a New York-based distribution company that has backing from 5-Hour Energy founder Manoj Bhargava.
Karpen has long been a well regarded part of the independent film strata, but he left Focus last March. That was the final piece of a restructuring by Universal Pictures that began in October with the exit of CEO James Schamus, and saw the closing of the Focus Gotham office when the pieces of Peter Schlessel’s FilmDistrict were combined with Focus. Schlessel took the reins of that company and kept some key Focus executives like Jeb Brody, who has been running point on the label’s biggest film Fifty Shades Of Grey. Nottingham Forest have never lost a home game in any competition to Qpr. If Harry Redknapp’s Hoops make history on Boxing Day then, their reward may be to top The Championship table.
Should Burnley fail to win, Qpr can go above them with victory at the City Ground – provided they match or better a potential Leicester City win against Reading. Billy Davies’s Reds have drawn three of their last four outings and have failed to score in the last two.
The Hoops are looking to bounce back from their only home league defeat of the campaign against promotion rivals Leicester. Both teams have suspensions to contend with.

Forest frontman Darius Henderson starts a ban after being sent off in the goalless draw with Birmingham City. Long-term absentees Dexter Blackstock, club captain Chris Cohen and centre back Kelvin Wilson are also out.

Nottingham Forest vs Reading
Friday, 29 November 2013
City Ground, Nottingham
Kick-off: 19:45 GMT
Referee: Stuart Attwell
Reading travel to Nottingham Forest on Friday knowing a win would take them above their opponents and into the SkyBet Championship playoff places ahead of the weekend’s fixtures.
The Royals come to the City Ground without a win in four matches and an away record of just two points from their last 12, however. Nigel Adkins’s outfit have only gone back to Berkshire with all three points from one of their last five visits to Nottingham.
Hosts Forest meanwhile can temporarily climb a place to fourth with a point or better. Billy Davies’s side are buoyed by a recent victory at East Midlands rivals Leicester City and a battling draw with table toppers Burnley last time out.

Los Angeles residents may have seen this peculiar vehicle around the Greek Theatre lately, emblazoned with an image of Al Pacino looking a little bit like Barry Manilow guest-starring on a 1985 episode of Miami Vice.
It’s actually a massive prop for an indie film tentatively titled Imagined, written and directed by Dan Fogelman, best known as the screenwriter of Crazy, Stupid, Love and the upcoming Last Vegas.
Soon he’ll be known as the filmmaker who got Pacino to sing.
The Godfather and Serpico actor plays Danny Collins, a slick, glitzy purveyor of pop-rock.

Los Angeles — An Al Pacino movie broke out in the middle of a concert by the band Chicago, with thousands of fans serving as extras.
Cameras were wheeled onstage during intermission of the group's show at the Greek Theatre on Friday night to film a scene from Pacino's upcoming movie "Imagine," in which he plays aging rock star Danny Collins.
With coaching from the director, the crowd chanted the name of Pacino's character as the 73-year-old actor walked on stage to sing "Hey Baby Doll" in a black suit. The movie co-stars Michael Caine, Annette Bening and Jennifer Garner.
"This is an improvisation," Pacino told the crowd. "You just came in and got it. That's not easy."
Chicago's band members remained on stage to watch and clap along during the 25-minute filming. After a few takes, the crowd grew restless and there was scattered booing for the real musicians to resume playing.
