Netflix announced the final season of “Dear White People” will launch Sept. 22 and be a musical season.
“The only way to move forward is to throw it back,” a teaser for the season previews. From there a cover of Montell Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It” kicks into gear.
The teaser also shows the students getting ready to dance, with snapping of hands and getting into formation to perform Jordan’s 1995 hit. There is an Afro-futuristic and 1990s-inspired dance floor, as the students of the fictional Winchester University look back on their time on campus amid their final year.
“Dear White People,” an extension of the film of the same name by Justin Simien, deals with issues of race, class and sexuality on that college campus. Logan Browning’s Sam White hosts a radio show within the series that is also titled “Dear White People” and is where...

With her recent Tokyo Olympic wins, Katie Ledecky is on her way to catching Michael Phelps's medal record. On July 27, the 24-year-old became the first-ever gold medalist in the women's 1,500-meter freestyle final at the Tokyo Olympics. This is the first time that women have been able to compete in the 1,500-meter race, although it's been a men's event since the 1908 Summer Olympics. Her recent win brings her career Olympic medals to a total of 10, with six of them being for individual events. Katie now has more individual Olympic gold medals than any other woman in the history of the sport.
"Thank you, Tokyo, and thank You All for the tremendous support this week and over the years to get to this point," Katie said in a post on Instagram. Teammates Natalie Hinds and Lilly King then showed their support for Katie on their Instagram Stories, while former Olympian...

‘Lfg’ Review: Bring Out the Vuvuzelas as the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team Takes on Its Employer
A handful of players from the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team riff on what the letters Lfg — their rallying cry — stand for exactly. The flow of close-ups in the winning and timely doc “Lfg,” from Jennifer McDonald to Samantha Mewis to Kelley O’Hara to Megan Rapinoe to Becky Sauerbrunn, has the feel of a pre-match kick around. Only, for all their ease, there’s also a focus that epitomizes the four-time World Cup victors.
Now streaming on HBO Max after its Tribeca Festival premiere, directors Andrea Nix Fine and Sean Fine’s factually compelling, unapologetically smitten film follows the team after they file a lawsuit against their employer, the U.S. Soccer Federation, for equal pay. Along the way (and it’s a long way to pay equity for professional female athletes), the team kicks some balls and some butt on the field, then weathers the coronavirus pandemic,...

"Anything less than winning is a failure." CNN Films & HBO Max have unveiled the first official trailer for a documentary titled Lfg, about the World Cup-winning U.S. Women's Soccer Team. This is premiering at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival this month, and also playing at AFI Docs this summer, before streaming on HBO Max in just a few weeks. This riveting film follows Megan Rapinoe, Jessica McDonald, Becky Sauerbrunn, Kelley O'Hara, Christen Press, Sam Mewis, and Julie Foudy, as they sue the United States Soccer Federation over pay discrimination. "A no-holds-barred, inside account of the U.S. women’s national team’s ongoing fight for equal pay." Ballerina, author and philanthropist Misty Copeland’s purpose is to give back to “those who came before [her]” and set a good example for the future generations.
The first Black principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater explained this during a virtual Paley Center for Media panel entitled “PaleyImpact: Choosing to Challenge: How Women are Leading the Way,” presented by Verizon on Monday. In celebration of International Women’s Day, the conversation focused on how media impacts women, including issues of gender parity and structural sexism, such as the motherhood penalty, and ageism.
“Women are the only gender who’s hit with … ‘Oh, she’s too ambitious,’ when men do that all the time,” said U.S. Rep. Val Demings. “We have to get over what people say about us or feel about us or whether they like us or not. We really have to focus on ourselves and our God-given talent to influence.

I can’t wait to see Natalie Portman in Thor: Love and Thunder. With the shoot expected to begin in March, we should get a better look at the movie soon – hopefully including a picture of the actress in full costume. But today we at least have confirmation of one important element, and that’s that Portman’s Thor will indeed be using Mjolnir.
This isn’t exactly a huge surprise, of course, especially given that she was famously holding it aloft during the initial Thor: Love and Thunder unveiling at the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019, but it’s nice to know for sure. Portman revealed the news during an interview with Espnw’s podcast when host Julie Foudy quizzed her about the project. After confirming that she’ll be wielding the hammer, Foudy joked that she should swing it around and say, “look at me now, boys!”

Though the NFL’s long been thought of as the biggest league and pro sports business in the U.S., there’s a potential contender in its midst. The NBA’s grown exponentially in the last decade, buoyed by a generation of transformative stars, global TV deals, and a strong digital presence.
Perhaps most importantly, and most relevant to the NFL’s own climb to the top of the American sports pile, is the fact that the NBA’s also become year-round entertainment. The NBA Draft occurs within days of the conclusion of the Finals, and free agency starts shortly after that. Next is the conclusion of Summer League, then a short lull before preseason begins again - though even that “lull” is populated by years' worth of preview content from fans and media.

Tracy Edwards does not easily take “no” for an answer. That’s quickly apparent in “Maiden,” Alex Holmes’ riveting retelling of Edwards’ historic achievement, leading the first all-woman crew in the Whitbread Round the World Race, one of earth’s biggest open sea sailing competitions.
For several months from 1989-1990, she steered her ragtag crew through formidable currents and temperatures both scorching and freezing. She made impossibly difficult decisions and fought her own battles against doubt. Through it all, she kept her crew together and proved their naysayers wrong in spectacular fashion.
Edwards survived a rough and rebellious childhood and entered her wayward young adulthood with no direction in life until she found sailing. Everything about it fascinated her, and it introduced her to exciting characters (like the roaming skippers who traveled wherever they pleased) and a few famous faces like King Hussien of Jordan. It was a world more...

Former ESPN hosts Jemele Hill and Britt McHenry traded barbs over the weekend after Hill accused McHenry of “racism” in a tweet.
“Does anyone actually watch this show?” McHenry asked her followers on Instagram on Friday, criticizing ESPN’s Bomani Jones and Pablo Torre and pointing to their show, “High Noon,” as an indication that the network prioritizes “filling demo’s over talent.”
“Be careful, your racism is showing,” Hill wrote on Twitter, sharing a screenshot of McHenry’s post.

Dylan Leiner and Martin Marquet invited me to Lafest, at Home Depot Center but I could not go. Michael Donaldson went though and his team played pretty well I hear. Dylan and Martin started it 3 years ago in NY and teamed with Tribeca. This year they took the event to L.A and are co-hosting with the Mia Hamm Foundation.

In 2007, they were knocked out of the World Cup play prematurely by Brazil, the very team they beat last Sunday to advance after Abby Wambach's amazing header tied the game with seconds remaining. The U.S. beat Brazil on penalty kicks, defeated France 3-1 Wednesday, and on Sunday find themselves on the precipice of taking home their first cup in 12 years. "I am the most honored person...

Wear pink, do good. Simple, right? Exactly, says sportlifestyle brand Puma as it kicks off year two of its celebrity-studded charity initiative Project Pink.
The project puts the fight against breast cancer in the hands of young soccer fans. Launched in 2010 in response to a group of female soccer athletes looking to support breast cancer awareness and research – and now cheered on by Puma soccer athletes and Project Pink spokeswomen Amy Rodriguez, Leslie Osborne, Karina LeBlanc, Alex Scott, Tasha Kai and Marta, plus Puma Women’s Soccer Ambassador Julie Foudy – the program is entering its second season on the heels of an over $60,000 donation to the Breast Cancer Research and Education Fund at Magee-Womens Foundation in 2010. Also joining Puma and its fight against breast cancer is Vampire Diaries actress Nina Dobrev, who, as an athlete in her youth, couldn’t wait to work alongside Puma and the athletes to support the cause.

NEW YORK -- Lightning strikes played havoc in Wednesday's Euro 2008 coverage around the world, with the international TV feed taken down three times, including the exciting final minutes.
Lightning strikes at the UEFA International Broadcast Center in Vienna, Austria, cut the telecast at least three times in the second half of the Germany-Turkey semifinal from Basel, Switzerland. The initial outage lasted six minutes, and then for the last 15 minutes the video was spotty at best.
It affected all of the world's Euro broadcasters, including ESPN in the U.S., with the exception of Swiss TV and Al-Jazeera.
ESPN's Rece Davis took pains to tell viewers early on that it wasn't just in the U.S. "It's everywhere, not just the United States but the world over," Davis said during the first forced break where he and analysts Julie Foudy and Tommy Smyth had to fill air time.
Some broadcasters, such as in Austria, gave viewers the stadium audio in the meantime, though ESPN did not.
