HBO’s anthology series “True Detective” is back after five years with a new season that will compete at the 2024 Emmy Awards. This latest installment that premiered in January comes with the subtitle “True Detective: Night Country” and, while still part of the franchise, it’s the first to not have the involvement of creator Nic Pizzolato – other than his executive producer credit. It was instead developed by Issa Lopez who wrote (or co-wrote) and directed all six episodes, and stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives in an Alaskan town investigating the disappearance of eight scientists. Let’s re-examine the three previous seasons of “True Detective” at the Emmys – which garnered a combined total of 22 nominations and five wins – to determine possible nominations in categories for the current season.
Here is the complete Emmys history for the first three seasons of “True Detective”:

With Daniel Craig’s exit as James Bond, Eon Productions has been on the lookout for the next British actor to play Agent 007. While the former Superman, Henry Cavill, is a fan favorite, recent reports indicated that Kick-Ass star Aaron Taylor-Johnson was offered the role by the studio and that he was expected to take up the offer and announce soon.
However, the rumor has not been confirmed by the actor or the production house, leading fans to bash the outlet that broke the news. Taylor-Johnson’s apparent confirmation as James Bond led to many fans being dejected by Cavill’s loss, but the campaign seems to be on full steam now that the news has been unconfirmed.

HBO’s “True Detective” has returned with a roaring fourth season starring two-time Oscar-winner Jodie Foster. Officially titled “True Detective: Night Country,” the season follows Foster’s police chief as she investigates the disappearance of eight men from a research station in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska.
Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, John Hawkes and newcomer Kali Reis all shine in this acclaimed edition of the franchise, which we predict will compete in all the major categories at this year’s Emmys. However, before we look ahead to this season’s Emmy chances, let’s take a look back at the show’s history with the TV academy.
The first season, which was classified as a drama series, got off to a rocketing start with 12 nominations (including duelling bids for stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey). It won five of those races. However, seasons two and three, which were re-classified to be limited series,...

Actor Michelle Monaghan was a part of HBO’s long-running anthology series True Detective in its first season. But as much praise as True Detective received, it also experienced its share of criticism. The show’s depiction of its female cast was a point of scrutiny for the series early on, which Monaghan couldn’t have disagreed with more.

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson weren’t the only actors who received attention during True Detective’s first season. The hit show had a few notable female actors a part of its cast as well. Monaghan co-starred right alongside McConaughey and Harrelson, playing the latter’s wife in the crime thriller. She committed to the show after the show’s director, Cary Fukunaga, and showrunner Nic Pizzolatto sent her a script.

Actor Idris Elba has always thrived in movies that have challenged him like Mandela or Beasts. But perhaps very few films tested him like his 2015 acclaimed Netflix hit Beasts of No Nation.

Elba did a feature that meant a lot to him with the 2015 movie Beasts of No Nation. The project saw Elba playing a military commander who adopts a young boy to be one of his child soldiers.
Right from the beginning, Elba confided that the movie was a personal project of his. His family was very familiar with the environment Beasts of No Nation took place in, so Elba almost felt obligated to do the film.
“This story is close to me because my parents come from Sierra Leone which is a country that was ravaged [by war] as you know,” Elba once told Nz Herald.

Just yesterday, we heard that Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the fourth season of the HBO anthology crime series True Detective (a season that’s known as True Detective: Night Country) “might” come back to do another season of the show. Now it’s a sure thing. Variety has broken the news that HBO has ordered True Detective season 5, and López, who has just secured new overall deal with the network, will be back at the helm.
True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto was the mastermind behind the first three seasons of the show, but once the third season wrapped up, his HBO deal expired and he signed a new (short-lived) deal with FX. HBO retained the ownership rights to True Detective, and with Pizzolatto gone they were interested in bringing in someone who had “a fresh voice with a different...

“True Detective” has been renewed for Season 5 at HBO. Issa López, the creator of “True Detective: Night Country,” will helm the fifth season under her new overall deal with HBO.
The renewal comes as little surprise, given the success of “Night Country,” which saw Jodie Foster and Kali Reis star in the fourth installment of the HBO anthology series. Per HBO, the season is the most-watched installment of the show to date, with 12.7 million cross platform viewers. The season finale on Feb. 18 was the most-watched episode of the season, drawing 3.2 million viewers across HBO and Max. That represents a 57% increase over the show’s premiere viewership in January.
“From conception to release, ‘Night Country’ has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” López said. “HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of ‘True Detective’ with Casey,...

True Detective is coming back for a fifth season at HBO.
Issa López, who served as showrunner for True Detective: Night Country, the fourth and most successful iteration of the crime franchise, will oversee the next installment as part of an overall deal she signed with the network.
It’s yet to be decided as to whether season five of True Detective will be related to Night Country or will be an entirely new story.
However, what’s clear is that, despite creator Nic Pizzolato’s criticisms, López’s season has brought a return to form for the True Detective universe, becoming the most-watched season with 12.7 million cross platform viewers.
As part of López’s new multiyear deal, she will also create new content for HBO and Max.

It’s no mystery what “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto thinks of the fourth season, “True Detective: Night Country.” Yet showrunner Issa López isn’t taking Pizzolatto’s public criticisms personally.
Ten years since Pizzolatto’s anthology HBO series starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson debuted, the screenwriter took to Instagram to comment on how “Night Country” connects to the first season of “True Detective,” calling it “so stupid.” Despite serving as an executive producer on “Night Country,” Pizzolatto wrote (via screenshots of the comments), “I certainly did not have any input on this story or anything else. Can’t blame me.”
“Night Country” showrunner Issa López, who writes and directs all six episodes of the new season led by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, told Vulture that Pizzolatto is certainly “entitled” to his beliefs.

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg’s collaboration on Saving Private Ryan spawned the critically acclaimed HBO series Band of Brothers, which chronicled the infantry troops on the ground in Europe during World War II. Now, the producers are back with a third installment in their chronicle of WWII, Masters of the Air. 2014's "True Detective" season 1 introduced a whole host of unique symbols, tropes, and stylistic choices to the crime procedural. It was so visually distinctive that fans have long since pined for the affecting mix of cosmic horror symbolism, occult mythology, and eclectic styles drawn from various religions native to Southern Louisiana that gave Nic Pizzolatto's original season its inescapably intoxicating atmosphere. The tone of that initial run of episodes was enhanced by director Cary Fukunaga, who shot the Louisiana setting with an impeccable eye for the inherent creepiness of its vast backwaters and ghost towns that, in Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey)'s words, were "like somebody's memory of a town, and the memory is fading."

Plot: Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

Even before they earned Oscar nominations for their respective performances in “Elvis” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan were already flying high. In 2021, the talented duo joined BAFTA TV nominee Callum Turner in filming “Masters of the Air,” a new miniseries produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman. The World War II-set drama — the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Apple TV+ — is the long-awaited follow-up to the Emmy-winning HBO miniseries “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific,” which followed members of the Army and Marine Corps, respectively, during the war.

When True Detective first premiered on HBO in January of 2014, audiences gleefully joined in on the investigation into the show's central mysteries, congregating on social media to spout elaborate theories backed by painstaking attention to this richly detailed world.
There was the question, of course, of who was responsible for the string of seemingly connected murders in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana.
But fans eager to pick apart this stylistically adventurous series were interested in far more than figuring out whodunnit.
They wanted to understand the show's philosophy, to figure out what was real and what was hallucinatory.
House of the Dragon Season 2: Everything We Know
In short, they wanted to figure out what this show was trying to say.
Now, most artists will tell you that they don't appreciate when audiences attempt to crack the code of their work as though it's some kind of puzzle to be solved.

Over 22 years after the premiere of HBO’s landmark Band of Brothers and nearly 14 years after the launch of HBO’s The Pacific (not quite as good as Band of Brothers but still epic longform storytelling), executive producers Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg have finally brought their third World War II series to the small screen.

“From the dusty mesa, her looming shadow grows.”
10 years ago, these ominous lyrics (courtesy of the alternative country duo The Handsome Family) introduced us to a horrific world of crime, conspiracy and multi-layered madness in the infamous intro to HBO’s hit show, True Detective. From that very first episode, we all knew this was going to be something special, with Nic Pizzolatto and Cary Fukunaga teaming up for a cinematic fusion of different genres that would end up earning countless accolades.
And while this made it difficult for subsequent seasons to compete with that masterful debut (even if they were all entertaining in their own unique ways), Issa López’s ongoing True Detective: Night Country is finally harkening back to the quasi-supernatural terror that flavored Marty and Rust’s story, with the showrunner going so far as to describe her new tale as a dark mirror of the first season.

When True Detective released on January 12, 2014, it made such a splash that it quickly became part of the popular culture landscape, and it certainly helped Matthew McConaughey get his Oscar win, while also helping most of those involved to further their careers, and it had also maintained the brand in the audiences’ mind, even when the second and third season were kind of forgettable. Season 4 arrives with a new mystery set in Alaska while also adding a bit of a supernatural twist like never before seen in the show.

At 60 years old, Jodie Foster has gracefully accepted her new place in the industry as a mentor, offering her wisdom as a seasoned veteran to the next generation of actors navigating Hollywood.
“The part they don’t tell you when you turn 60 is that it’s so much fun because it’s not your time anymore. It’s someone else’s time, and the best part of getting older is realizing that you actually have something to give back. You have something to contribute, to help support other people’s performances, and to help spur other voices that haven’t been heard before,” said Foster.
It’s a sentiment her “True Detectives” co-stars echoed on the red carpet on Tuesday night (which comes days after Foster’s comments regarding Gen-z’s work ethic made headlines), telling Variety that they earned a master-class in acting from the “Nyad” star.

"True Detective" has been a rough beast. The first season felt like it came out of nowhere, and proceeded to blow our minds in the process. Arriving at the height of The McConaissance, when Matthew McConaughey stopped making awful rom-coms and reminded us all he was a great actor, the first season, created by Nic Pizzolatto and helmed entirely by Cary Joji Fukunaga, was the very definition of must-see TV. A strange, funny, existential bit of pulp, the series featured McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as mismatched cops looking into ritualistic murders. That first season occasionally hinted at the supernatural while never fully embracing it, and despite its bleaker-than-bleak nature, ended on a surprisingly hopeful note. After all, that season concluded with McConaughey's miserable Rust Cohle commenting: "Well, once there was only dark. You ask me, the light's winning."
Season 1 was so beloved that season 2 faced an uphill battle. For its sophomore season,...

Plot: When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.
Review: Few shows have made an impression the way the first season of True Detective did. While I enjoyed the second and third seasons of Nic Pizzolatto’s anthology thriller, neither could hold a candle to the Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey-led debut. Directed by Cary Fukunaga, True Detective was a philosophical and existential masterpiece full of quotable lines that had audiences brainstorming multiple timelines for ten weeks straight. Liz Danvers, chief of police in the remote Alaska town of Ennis, and heroine of True Detective: Night Country, is fond of telling other cops they’re asking the wrong questions, prodding them over and over until they ask the right one. With Night Country, there’s only one question: Was it worth resurrecting the long-dormant True Detective franchise — and without its original creator, Nic Pizzolatto?

Kristine Froseth is used to being the new girl. The New Jersey-born actress moved from Norway and back every few years for her father’s banking job, seesawing between friendships and cultures. Due to her nomadic lifestyle, she struggled to find herself during her formative years, she says, similar to her character Nan St. George in Apple TV’s The Buccaneers.
“I just wanted to fit in so desperately,” Froseth tells Rolling Stone. “So, I adapted to whatever people were doing. I was a chameleon.”

Ever since Saving Private Ryan, it has been nearly impossible not to get excited over a Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks collaboration, especially when it comes to projects surrounding their shared love of World War II. And their latest, Masters of the Air, looks to be a stellar addition to the lineup.
This time around, executive producers Spielberg and Hanks – along with Gary Geotzman who, like the aforementioned men, helped get Band of Brothers and The Pacific on the air – take to the skies, focusing on a group in the United States Army Air Forces. While Band of Brothers and The Pacific were both monumental hits for HBO and won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries, Masters of the Air will be headed to Apple TV+, where it is no doubt one of the most highly anticipated series since the service launched.

Apple TV+ taketh away, but Apple TV+ also giveth in spades. It's been over a decade since production on the war epic "Masters of the Air" began, but the Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks-executive produced limited series follow-up to "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" is almost here. Originally developed as a project for HBO, "Masters of the Air" jumped over to Apple TV+ in 2019 as the first in-house production for the studio. Of course, filming a sweeping WWII drama with explosions and flight scenes will take a bit more time than, say, a relatable dramedy like "Shrinking" (not to mention the necessary delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic), but the newest trailer for the highly-anticipated series signals that our wait has not been in vain.

The new trailer for the upcoming season of HBO’s hit crime show True Detective has just been released courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter. Season 4 of the anthology brings audiences to Alaska, where the location is known for having days of constant sunlight as well as constant darkness. Both extremes have been depicted in films like Christopher Nolan‘s Insomnia and the vampire movie 30 Days of Night. This new trailer has Jodie Foster back at odds with a mysterious killer, which will ring memories of Silence of the Lambs, and she pairs up with Kali Reis to solve a case that seems to tread on supernatural elements. It also looks as if this season is connecting to past seasons with the reveal of a spiral marking that has been featured in season one and season three.

The latest trailer for True Detective: Night Country puts a strong emphasis on just how unsettling the long periods of darkness in Alaska can be.
The fourth season of HBO’s anthology series stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as two detectives — who evidently have some not-so-great history with one another — investigating the disappearance of eight scientists from an arctic research station as the months without sunlight descend on Alaska. “To solve the case,” the show’s logline reads, “Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”
The trailer also expands on an earlier teaser by offering up a few more details about the case — and showcasing the crooked spiral iconography that’s a visual signature for True Detective, having featured in seasons one and three (which...

Fresh off the strike and newly back to work, American writer-director Dee Rees has set her sights on her next feature – a stylized dark comedy meant to visualize a central character’s frantic stream of consciousness.
“It’s a weird, experimental thing,” says Rees, who’s currently serving on the jury of this year’s Marrakech Film Festival. “[I’ve explored] comedic elements in my films, but this is the first time where it’s a kind of a dark, sad satire.”
While the “Pariah” and “Mudbound” filmmaker had toyed with this latest project for years, she picked up her pen anew once the writers strike concluded and then committed full-on following an opportune encounter in Marrakech.
“People will come to you with what they think you should do, or what they think you’d be good at,” she tells Variety. “So I try to still listen to that kind of voice. I...

Christopher Nolan is opening up about rumors that point to him taking over the James Bond film franchise and directing the next chapter of the franchise.
In a new interview, the Oppenheimer director finally addresses if there’s any truth to the talk he’ll helm the action movie.
“No. Sadly no truth to those rumors, but I’m very thrilled the strike is over and we can all get back to work,” Nolan said in an interview with the Associated Press.

Apple TV+ this morning dropped the first teaser trailer for its highly-anticipated nine-part, fact-based, World War II limited series “Masters of the Air,” based on the Donald L. Miller book of the same name and emerging from the same executive producing team of Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman that made the multiple Emmy-winning, HBO WWII miniseries “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Premiering January 26, 2024, the wartime drama, scripted for streaming by writer John Orloff, stars 2023 Oscar nominees Austin Butler (“Elvis”) and Barry Keoghan. Watch the teaser trailer above.
