When the cast and creators of FX Networks’ “The League” reunited Friday night in Austin at the Atx Television Festival the primary topic — threaded between jokes about fantasy football failures and on-set injuries — was timing and opportunity. Namely, did the show air at the right time, could it survive in today’s TV landscape, and would it thrive, even, if a revival aired on streaming or premium networks, sans the restrictions of basic cable?
Katie Aselton, who played Jenny, referred to the possibility of a revival as the “billion dollar question,” and co-creator Jackie Marcus Schaffer caught some good-natured flack from the cast when she questioned “The League’s” continued relevancy.
“At the time [we made the show], fantasy football was [really] popular,” she said. “But is that still a thing?”
“I don’t know,” Aselton said, sarcastically. “Are friends still a thing?”
“Are people still busting balls?” Jason Mantzoukas said, piling on.

On Friday night, The League creators Jeff Schaffer and Jackie Marcus Schaffer were joined by cast members Paul Scheer (Andre), Nick Kroll (Ruxin), Jason Mantzoukas (Rafi), Stephen Rannazzisi (Kevin) and Katie Aselton (Jenny) to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the FX cult comedy and reminisce about the show and hilariously throw each other under the bus — specifically Jonathan Lajoie and Mark Duplass, who weren’t able to make it to the reunion. But first, they pointed out that they once had a member of the royal family on the show.
“Mark is Eskimo brothers with Prince Harry,” Aselton pointed out.
Rannazzisi was shocked and did not remember that Meghan Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex, was on the show on the first season of the show playing a divorcee.
“We had an Oscar winner and a princess on the show!” Aselton pointed out.
“The Queen is a big The League fan,” Mantzoukas chimed in before taking a beat to say: “If Meghan Markle was in a scene with Rafi, she would be ineligible to be a princess.”
The series ran for seven seasons and for those who watched the semi-improvised show, the Schaffers puts the cast through a lot of off-center scenarios which included work with dangerous members of the animal kingdom including bears, bulls, monkeys and birds — which Rannazzisi hates. They also discussed how they had a real fantasy football league behind the scenes and out of everyone, Rannazzisi and Schaffer were the only real-life fantasy football players — and they constantly lost. There were also many moments when injuries happened on set with an on-set medic who wasn’t that much help. All that said, they were asked if there would a reboot of this show to do all of this all over again.
“At the time, fantasy football was popular — is that still popular?” asked Marcus Schaffer.
Aselton responded, “Is Friends still popular, Jackie?”
“There’s nothing on this planet more fun than working with these people,” Schaffer added. “It was an extremely fun experience.”
“Could you reboot the show and have the same impact — I don’t know,” adds Scheer. “But I think people would be excited to see this show do something.”...

A great ensemble creates a mysterious bond between a show and its viewers. The chemistry shared on screen brings with it a certain level of comfort.
But to refer to this quality as some kind of supernatural power does a disservice to the men and women who forge it. There is the talent of each individual performer to consider: If any of them falter, the whole dynamic falls apart. It’s a dynamic that requires work, too. Whether it’s bonding in real-life or being a good listener on set, chemistry is a science for these casts; it’s made, not found.
Then there’s the versatility of expanding these connections beyond just one or two cast members, but an entire ensemble of six or so series regulars. The best ensembles work no matter who’s paired up in a scene, and it feels like the TV can barely contain...

Why did Steve Rannazzisi lie about surviving 9/11? It's a complicated question, one that Rannazzisi himself had trouble answering during a 40-minute interview with Howard Stern that doubled as an intense therapy session. As he told it, the lie was just a spur-of-the-moment mistake that spiraled staggeringly out of control. "It wasn't calculated at all," he told Stern. "It was as simple as sitting at the Comedy Store and everyone [being] like, 'Hey, you're from New York?' 'Yeah.' 'Were you just there? You were around?' 'Yeah, I was downtown.' 'You worked there?' 'Yeah, I did.'" At that point, he said, it was too late: "You have like 15 seconds to go, 'Wait, hold on, stop, wait, I'm sorry, that's not true.' And if you pass that 15 seconds, now it becomes a thing where you're like — 'Now I have to be the guy who is very strange...

There was concern when The League moved to Fxx, a cable channel with far fewer viewers. Despite a big drop in the ratings however, the series wasn't cancelled and has survived for seven season. Will the final season be the comedy's biggest yet or, will the numbers drop lower? Should there have been an eighth season? Stay tuned.

Buffalo Wild Wings has dropped “The League” star Steve Rannazzisi as its spokesperson and TV-commercial star following the revelation of his 9/11 lie. “Upon careful review, we have decided to discontinue airing our current television commercials featuring Steve Rannazzisi,” a Buffalo Wild Wings rep told TheWrap on Thursday. The comedian and actor claimed that he had escaped the 54th floor of the World Trade Center’s south tower on Sept. 11, 2001. He did not, and was confronted with proof last week. Rannazzisi finally copped to the lie on Wednesday, apologizing profusely on Twitter. Also Read: Steve Rannazzisi 9/11 Lie Prompts Comedy Central to Reconsider Stand-up.

Here are things I believe to be true: 1. Steve Rannazzisi lied repeatedly about how escaping 9/11 compelled him to focus on becoming a comedian.* 2. Doing so was very wrong. 3. When he says, "I don't know why I said this," he is telling the truth. Since his confession proves No. 1, and No. 2 is obvious, I intend to investigate No. 3. My first reaction to hearing this story was, decidedly, Huh? Though Rannazzisi's actions have been called "disrespectful" and "inexcusable" — and that was just by Rannazzisi himself — I mostly found them so very weird. Then I read the part where Rannazzisi said, "It was an early taste of having a public persona," and a picture of the decision started coming together: Being interviewed is profoundly strange, and nothing prepares you for how much you will be interviewed once you get on television. The story reminded me one...

After criticizing Steve Rannazzisi for fabricating a story about escaping 9/11, Saturday Night Live's Pete Davidson is asking outraged fans to "take it easy" on his fellow comedian.
Rannazzisi, 37, admitted Wednesday that he's been lying about his near-death experience ever since terrorists crashed into the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Davidson's father, a New York firefighter, died in the horrific attack.
"It's ok @SteveRannazzisi people make mistakes ... Can't wait to meet my dad for lunch later," Davidson, 21, first tweeted. But The League actor didn't seem to get the joke and replied with a sincere thank-you.
"I think you missed the point …," Davidson responded.

Steve Rannazzisi, one of the stars of the Fxx comedy The League, has long recounted stories of narrowly escaping the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 - but on Tuesday, the actor admitted that he has been lying all along in a statement given to The New York Times, after facing evidence that questioned his many reports. He said: "I was not at the Trade Center on that day. I don't know why I said this. This was inexcusable. I am truly, truly sorry. For many years, more than anything, I have wished that, with silence, I could somehow erase a story told by an immature young man. It only made me more ashamed. How could I tell my children to be honest when I hadn't come clean about this? It is to the victims of 9/11 and to the people that love them - and the people that love me - that I ask for forgiveness.

“Saturday Night Live” player Pete Davidson has defended Stephen Rannazzisi after “The League” star admitted on Wednesday to lying about being in one of the fallen World Trade Center towers on 9/11. Although Davidson initially took shots at the fellow comedian, he changed his tune once Rannazzisi personally reached out to apologize for his lie. It’s an especially touchy subject for Davidson, because his father was one of the firefighters who died in the Sept. 11 attacks. Comedian Stephen Rannazzisi’s lie about escaping from the World Trade Center on 9/11 has Comedy Central reconsidering whether or not to air his stand-up special this Saturday as scheduled. “We just learned about this last night,” a Comedy Central spokesperson told TheWrap Wednesday. “We are very disappointed to hear about Steve’s misrepresentations and are currently determining how we will move forward.” Rannazzisi, who co-stars on FX’s “The League,” has for years maintained a fib about being in one of the fallen World Trade Center towers 14 years ago. He claimed he worked for Merrill Lynch at the time and had to.

"The League" star Steve Rannazzisi -- who copped to lying about escaping the 9/11 attack -- just got publicly ripped by Pete Davidson from 'SNL' ... whose firefighter dad was killed on 9/11. Appropriately, Davidson was one of the first celebs to react to Rannazzisi's confession that he lied for years about being in the World Trade Center. Pete sarcastically tweeted, "It's ok @SteveRannazzisi people make mistakes ... Can't wait to meet my dad for lunch later.

Steve Rannazzisi has seen quite a bit of success over the last decade with his role on The League as well as several comedy gigs across major television networks. More often than not, he's attributed such achievements to the decisions he made following a narrow escape from the World Trade Center attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Throughout his rise to fame and up until just a few years ago, the 37-year-old actor told and re-told several publications that he was working at the Merrill Lynch offices on the 54th floor of the south tower when he saw the first plane strike the north tower. "I was there and then the first tower got hit and we were like jostled all over the place," he explained during a podcast with...

Steve Rannazzisi has previously, and repeatedly, narrowed down his personal and professional success to an important day in national history: Sept. 11, 2001. In various interviews, the comedian and star of FX's The League -- whose second Comedy Central standup special Breaking Dad airs Saturday -- has recounted how the World Trade Center attacks propelled him to move to Los Angeles and pursue comedy, leaving his account manager post at Merrill Lynch (on the 54th floor of the south tower) behind. Additionally, these retellings (which took place only during interviews and never during Comedy Central programming) have also included that his girlfriend worked in
