Kiss are the latest artists to sell off their music catalog — and, in this case, their well-known onstage personas and makeup — for big money.
The band — which closed out its (alleged) farewell tour in December 2023 — announced they have sold the rights to their music and imagery to Pophouse, the Swedish company that created the Abba Voyage hologram show and is working on a similar project involving Kiss.
While the price wasn’t revealed in a joint press release, Fortune reports that Kiss raked in upwards of $300 million in the sale.

The recently retired Kiss has sold its music catalog, likeness and brand name to Swedish entertainment firm Pophouse. Financial terms were not disclosed, but The Associated Press reports the deal is estimated to be over $300 million.
“As part of the partnership, Pophouse will create digital versions of Kiss that will allow the band and their unique personas to live forever,” Pophouse and Kiss said in a press release announcing the deal. “Through a magical combination of cutting-edge technology and unrivaled creativity, Pophouse will bring the full, authentic Kiss experience to both existing and new fans for years to come.” The avatar show is slated to launch in 2027.
As part of the deal, Pophouse CEO Per Sundin says a biopic, a documentary and a Kiss experience also are planned.

In yet another example of anime blending into the real world, to celebrate the release of the Kizumonogatari -Koyomi Vamp- anime film, a compilation re-edit of the three Kizumonogatari anime films, the film has taken over Shinjuku Sanchome Tokyo Metro station in a media blitz until January 15. For those with a keen eye and have seen the original three films, you might be able to tell that Shinjuku Sanchome Station was the inspiration behind the iconic scene where Araragi and Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade met for the very first time. Alongside the collaboration, the film also announced that French artist Clémentine will be returning to compose the ending theme song for the compilation film after previously working on the themes for the second and third outings. During Kiss’ final concert earlier this month, the (allegedly) retiring band announced plans to continue on as digital avatars. On Friday, the Destroyer act revealed when their “new era” will begin: 2027.
“50 years is a long time, and what the future holds is in the making,” Kiss said in their latest promotional video trumpeting their digital forms. “A show is coming.”
Heralded as the big surprise to close out the band’s “final” gig at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Kiss premiered their avatars, created in collaboration with Industrial Light & Magic.

In a perfect world, Kiss would have wrapped up the final show of their End of the World tour by inviting former members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss onto the stage for tearful hugs, an end to the bitterness that has consumed the group for decades, and one last rendition of “Rock and Roll All Nite,” giving the inevitable biopic a perfect last scene.
In the world we actually live on, Criss and Frehley were nowhere in sight when Kiss played their (supposed) final show at Madison Square Garden on Saturday evening.

Sometime around 11 p.m. on Dec. 2, Gene Simmons will walk offstage at Madison Square Garden in New York as the final notes of “Rock and Roll All Nite” echo through the arena, remove his Demon makeup for the last time, and say goodbye to the band he formed five decades ago. It’s easy to be skeptical about this considering nearly every farewell tour in rock history has been bullshit, this is actually the second Kiss goodbye tour, and this isn’t a band known for leaving money on the table,...

Choosing a Halloween costume is pretty much like choosing a new identity: it's one night to be whoever you want, and what's more fun than pretending you're a famous musician? Of course you could go more current and channel Beyoncé's "Renaissance" World Tour costumes, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, or Justin Bieber, but going back in time can be really exciting too - especially when it comes to paying homage to an iconic musician.
As far as musician Halloween costumes go, you'll be in good company. In 2017, Kim Kardashian and her sister Kourtney channeled Madonna and Michael Jackson with spot-on looks, while both Demi Lovato and Kim went as Selena Quintanilla in 2017. Beyoncé herself has often favored famous musician costumes for Halloween, dressing up with Blue Ivy and Tina Knowles as Salt-n-Pepa in 2016 and going as Toni Braxton in 2018. Madonna’s “Material Girl” is a very 1980s song and so is the classic rock song that outperformed it. Madonna said she enjoys material things while acknowledging their impermanence. She once told Oprah Winfrey “I’m so not the Material Girl now.”
Madonna‘s “Material Girl” exemplified the materialism of the 1980s. During its time on the charts, “Material Girl” was overshadowed by a classic rock song. Later, Madonna said “Material Girl” didn’t represent her true feelings.
Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’ was overshadowed on the charts by a classic rock power ballad
According to Rhino Entertainment, “Material Girl” merely hit No. 2 on the charts. It was blocked from the top of the Billboard Hot 100 by Reo Speedwagon’s “Can’t Fight This Feeling.” On a surface level, “Material Girl” extolls the greed of the era. It also combines new-wave music with dance-pop in a way that was typical during the time.

Blondie’s “Call Me” sounds like a Kiss song that was supposed to combine multiple genres. Gene Simmons hated the song in question from the first time he heard it. He may have made peace with it because it became such a huge success on the charts.
Blondie’s “Call Me” is one of the most enduring classic rock songs from the early 1980s. It sounds a touch like one of Kiss’ most famous songs. Despite this similarity, one of the tracks performed a lot better in the United States than the other.

Part of what makes Blondie’s “Call Me” so great is its melody. In the lead-up to the song’s chorus, Debbie Harry sings “Cover me with kisses, baby / Cover me with love / Roll me in designer sheets / I’ll never get enough.

Gene Simmons is known for his eccentricities. Even when he isn’t wearing makeup and silver armor on stage, he is a rock star in many ways outside of his music. Kiss has attached its brand to many different mediums, including comic books. Gene Simmons recently confirmed a longtime rumor about the band’s comic adventures and said these books have the potential to “recreate humanity” if it’s ever wiped out.

Rock’n’roll musicians have a habit of thinking of themselves like secular gods, but the truth is they’re not infallible. No matter how successful a band may or may not have been in the past, there’s never any guarantee their next record will live up to the heights they’ve previously scaled. Sometimes, everything that once went right just all goes wrong.
There are often extenuating circumstances, of course. Band members may leave due to death, drugs or just good old-fashioned “musical differences”, or an ambitious new direction may turn out to be more like a swerve into oncoming traffic.
Whatever the cause, the fact remains that just because an album has the name of a classic band slapped across the cover, it doesn’t necessarily follow that the album itself will be a classic.

The original “Princess Diana” track featured on Spice’s Like..? EP, released in January. This new version, released on Friday (14 April) has been reworked with Minaj delivering heavy-hitting bars.
Fans were quick to show their appreciation for the collaboration and praised it widely on social media.
However, some also noticed that the track may have included potential details about Minaj’s forthcoming music business ventures.
In early March, Minaj released her first single of the year, titled “Red Ruby Da Sleeze”. It samples Lumidee’s 2003 hit “Never Leave You”, and became Minaj’s ninth number one on the Hot Rap Songs chart.

Gene Simmons was forced to take a seat when he became ill on stage during a recent Kiss concert in Brazil.
The rock band performed in Manaus, Brazil on Wednesday (12 April).
During the show, however, Simmons, 73, had to pause the show before sitting down for the remainder of the performance.

Gene Simmons had to take a break and play sitting down during Wednesday night’s Kiss performance in Manaus, Brazil. The band’s Paul Stanley told the crowd that Simmons was sick. A review by ACritica claimed that Simmons’ illness forced the band to stop for around five minutes, but that he was eventually able to finish the show.
“We’re gonna have to stop,” Stanley said, gesturing at Simmons, who was seated with crew members looking after him. “You know how much we love Gene, and he’s obviously sick.

Ace Frehley recently gave Paul Stanley a week to apologize for a disparaging comment, but apparently all he got back from the Kiss singer-guitarist was a good old-fashioned “Fuck you!”
To quickly recap, last month Stanley told Howard Stern that a reunion with original Kiss members Frehley and Peter Criss would sound like “Piss.” Frehley, appearing on Eddie Trunk’s SiriusXM show last week, threatened to spill “dirt” on Stanley and Gene Simmons if he didn’t get an apology within seven days.
As promised, Frehley returned to Trunk’s show today (April 5th), a week later, with an update. When asked by Trunk if Stanley responded, Frehley said, “Yes, he did, not long after the show was over. I was blindsided by the phone call. … But instead of an apology, I got a five-second phone call which said, ‘Fuck you, Ace. I’m not going to apologize,’ and hung up.

I was blindsided by the phone call. … But instead of an apology, I got a five-second phone call which said, ‘Fuck you, Ace. I’m not going to apologize,’ and hung up.

After the debacle that was the 1993 live-action Super Mario Brothers movie adaptation, the creators of the new animated version clearly felt the need to restore the faith of the wildly popular video game’s legions of fans. While devoted players will weigh in on whether the film fulfills that goal sufficiently, The Super Mario Bros. Movie feels like a labor of love that should easily weather any nitpicking from purists. It should also prove a major cash cow for co-producers Nintendo, Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures, with sequels and spin-offs virtually guaranteed.
While Matthew Fogel’s screenplay won’t win any awards, it builds a reasonable framework for the 90 minutes of nearly nonstop mayhem that ensues. The film provides an origin story for Mario (Chris Pratt) and his younger brother Luigi (Charlie Day), first seen as regular joe Brooklyn plumbers starting their own business, much to the derision of their former boss,...

Casablanca Records ranks as one of the most legendary record labels of all time. In its classic incarnation, the label discovered artists as varied as Kiss, Donna Summer, The Village People, Parliament, Giorgio Moroder and many more throughout the disco era. The label was the brainchild of Neil Bogart, a legendary record exec who, tragically, died young of cancer at only 39. His own son, Timothy Bogart, has assembled a loving, warts-and-all biopic about his father, Spinning Gold, which opened in theaters last week.
I was lucky enough to speak to Timothy, his leading man Jeremy Jordan, who plays his father, and SNL vet Jay Pharoah, who plays Bogart’s right-hand man Cecil Holmes, and singer Tayla Parx, who plays Donna Summer. The interviews were pretty interesting, with Timothy Bogart in the unique position of adapting his own father’s life story to the big screen. He discusses how he didn...

Suffering from many of the same issues as Kasi Lemmons’ Witney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody, Spinning Gold contains too rich of a life for its 137-minute runtime. The brilliance of both Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane and Todd Haynes’ fictional glam rock epic Velvet Goldmine is that they understood there’s only so much you can bite off, starting with the official record and working with those in closest proximity to their subject.
Directed by Timothy Scott Bogart––son of its subject, Neil Bogart––and told from the first-person perspective of the record executive (played by Jeremy Jordan), Spinning Gold takes the colorful story of an entrepreneur who died at age 39 and races through several highlights. These include discovering and packaging Kiss, figuring out that Donna Summer’s “Love to Love You Baby” needed to be 17 minutes long so people can make love to it, and working with the Isley Brothers,...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for the newly released “Spinning Gold,” the outrageous 1970s tale of the founding of Casablanca Records by Neil Bogart. Currently in theaters, since March 31st.

The mover and shaker of Casablanca Records was Neil Bogart (Jeremy Jordan), ardently characterized as a mid 20th Century con man, in a sense. When he splits off his own label … Casablanca Records … in the early 1970s, he starts in massive debt but digs it out with a new artist, Donna Summer. (Taya Parx), and a new sound … disco. "The artists worked with us, not for us. We were family." Hero Ent. is releasing this music history movie in theaters nationwide later this week - Spinning Gold, opening on March 31st. If the music business were allowed to write its own history, every year’s chronicle would glow with variations on the same theme — the words “transformation,” “revolution,” and “record-breaking sea change” chief among the lexicon — ad nauseam. But in the peculiar shadow of 2020, these bombastic end-of-year appraisals, for the first time, are quite accurate. Without lucrative live shows and a predictable event calendar, the industry — from record labels to artists to jaunty financial entrepreneurs — went off its rails in search of new revenue streams and new points of connection to music fans.

Scarlett Johansson just gave her Ivanka Trump impression another go!
The Avengers: Infinity War star made a surprise appearance during the cold open on Saturday Night Live's holiday episode, reprising her role as Donald Trump's eldest daughter, to decorate the White House tree with her father.
"He's packing a go bag before the FBI arrives," Johansson's character said of Ivanka's husband, Jared Kushner. "I'll always remember that one time I heard him talk."
Johansson also lambasted Trump's support of Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore during her cameo, referencing something Ivanka said of the controversial politician. "As I said, there's a special place in hell, and we're all there," she quipped.
Johansson previously skewered Ivanka last season when she hosted the show with "Complicit," a feaux-fragrance ad mocking the president's daughter's "feminist" image.
Of course, Johansson dropping by is no surprise, as she's linked to "Weekend Update" co-host and recently announced new co-head writer, Colin Jost!

The star celebrated turning 50 (we did a double take too!) in a sexy Josie Natori bodysuit, worn under a sheer Zara skirt featuring sparkly embellishment and accessorized with black Stuart Weitzman sandals. She also slicked back her hair to add to the head-turning ensemble.

Kevin Hart and Leslie Jones are going country.
The stars dressed up in cowboy gear Tuesday and shared photos of the outing, along with teasing an upcoming project together.
“Me & @lesdogggg made some comedy magic today,” Hart, 38, wrote. “Can’t wait for u guys to see this comedy magic!!!!”
The Saturday Night Live star, 49, seconded his sentiment, captioning a series of photos of her and Hart in costume, “Yo this is about to be hilarious!!!”
Though neither comedian provided details about why they were donning cowboy boots, jeans and decadent belt buckles, Instagram commenters begged the duo to make a movie together.
