Delivering a great Oscar acceptance speech requires a bit of magic, with the winner having to strike just the right balance of charm and humility.
However, often the speeches most remembered are those that end in disaster.
Over the years, many actors have been booed, pitied or laughed at for their podium faux pas. Some speeches are too saccharine, others too long. The worst are when an actor thinks only of themselves.
Despite Frances McDormand’s empowering speech about Hollywood’s gender imbalance a few years back, attempts to inject the ceremony with political messaging haven’t always been handled so well. Oscars history is peppered with the uncomfortable silences and jeers that have invariably greeted bad political jokes and clumsy protests.
As the clock counts down to the 94th awards ceremony, all of the nominees will be hoping to bring home a statue. But more than that, should they win,...

When this is all over—Covid, unrest, financial reconstruction—will Los Angeles still be the Movie Capital? Perhaps not.
This week, the Federal Emergency Management Agency put Los Angeles County at the top of its new National Risk Index, which calculates danger from natural disasters like earthquakes, fire and flood. It was only the latest in a string of threats that have movie people, and everyone else here, wondering if California has seen its golden hour come and go.
You can’t get into a hospital, and orders are to conserve oxygen. For the moment, Los Angeles is at the center of the pandemic.
On the policy front, there’s only more trouble. Facing fiscal collapse and a rising tide of homelessness, legislators have been floating proposals to boost a top tax rate of 13.3 percent, already the nation’s highest, to something like 16.8 percent, or to impose an annual wealth...

Amazon said Wednesday it closed the sale of $10 billion worth of fresh debt at record low interest rates. It sold six tranches of notes of between $1 billion and $2.5 billion with maturities of up to 50 years. Proceeds will be used for general corporate purposes, which could include paying down other debt, stock buybacks, acquisitions, capital expenditures or other uses.
Companies have been raising cash at a rapid pace to amass a cushion to see them through the Covid-19 crisis and more recently to refinance old debt. The interest rates they need to offer depend on their credit rating and how many investors want the bonds. With months of shelter-at-home directives, Amazon has become a favorite stock, the belle of the ball. The debt was rated investment grade and demand was high, resulting in a record low interest rate of 0.4% for one tranche of $1 billion in notes. That’s a low for a corporate bond issuance,...

Washington — Anonymous campaign cash is as much a fixture of American politics nowadays as yard signs and awkward photos of presidential contenders eating corn dogs. Dark money may have existed well before Citizens United, but that 2010 Supreme Court decision opened the floodgates for untraceable money to soak our elections. It also left voters clueless about who was putting up the hundreds of millions of dollars spent by groups with anodyne names like Priorities USA and Americans for Prosperity.

Donald Trump’s first day as president may have been short on A-list celebs, but when it comes to big checks, Trump’s inauguration really was the biggest ever, period. A 510-page disclosure report, filed with the Federal Election Commission on Tuesday, showed casino magnate Sheldon Adelson ponied up a whopping $5 million to pay for the festivities, the largest single contribution ever given to an inauguration, according to a New York Times report. Adelson wasn’t the only one to offer up a multi-million dollar donation. Other wealthy contributors included New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, billionaire investors Steven Cohen and Charles Schwab,...

For anyone who sloughs over dyslexia as an imagined problem that overprotective parents use to give their kids more time on tests, watch HBO's "The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia" Monday, Oct. 29.
It's far from a perfect documentary, but it proves that dyslexia can be seen. Imaging shows a dyslexic's brain patterns are different.
Successful people, including British entrepreneur Richard Branson, American businessman Charles Schwab and California politician Gavin Newsom, are dyslexics.
Dyslexics explain how they must spend considerably more time reading materials others would find basic, but nothing is basic when word patterns are random.
"I wish I could have seen this film when my son was functionally illiterate and I had nowhere to turn," documentarian James Redford, son of Robert, tells Zap2it.
James features his son, Dylan, in it, but the film does not explain that.
