The Gentlemen is the latest entry into Guy Ritchie‘s chaotic and hilarious world of crime. The Netflix series is created by Ritchie himself and it is set in the world of Ritchie’s 2019 film of the same name. It follows the story of Eddie Horniman, who unexpectedly inherits the title of Duke and his father’s whole estate. Still, he is more surprised as what he doesn’t know is that his father was in cahoots with criminals, who were growing cannabis on their estate. Eddie decides that he wants to rid his family estate of all the weed plants and criminals, but before he can do that he might have to do some criminal things himself first. The Gentlemen stars Theo James in the lead roles with Kaya Scodelario, Daniel Ings, Vinnie Jones, Ruby Sear, Joely Richardson, Giancarlo Esposito, Alexis Rodney, and Harry Goodwins starring in supporting roles.

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

Ottessa Moshfegh may have been channeling Hitchcock for her screenplay for William Oldroyd’s “Eileen,” but star Marin Ireland turned to a much different filmmaker for creative inspiration on the 1960s-set noir. The film was co-written by Luke Goebel.
Ireland, nominated for Best Supporting Performance for “Eileen” opposite Anne Hathaway, who was also nominated, came by IndieWire’s spot at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards red carpet to talk the 2023 Neon release. In the film, Ireland plays the mother of a teenager who’s been arrested for his father’s murder, and she’s hiding a secret.
“I had read the book years earlier, and I was like, what are we doing? Where did this come from?” Ireland said of her first meeting with Moshfegh. “She told me about this documentary she had watched called ‘Lost for Life’ about teens who were convicted as adults, who were serving life sentences,...

Da’Vine Joy Randolph joked about the struggles of filming The Holdovers, including a lack of “heated seats during a Boston winter,” and other resources but also praised independent filmmaking as “the beating heart of this industry” while accepting the Film Independent Spirit Award for best supporting performance on Sunday.
“I often joke that making Holdovers felt like doing a student film,” she said. “Whatever resources we lacked, such as heated seats during a Boston winter, we made up for and care and determination every day. I was astonished by the level of innovation and creativity that our cast and crew exhibited in order to turn what limited resources we had into an incredible piece of art, all of which is a beautiful testament of what can happen when a small group of passionate people are given a chance to come together and tell the story.”

If there’s one thing horror fans love the most, it’s a solid scare that gets the adrenaline pumping. We’re forever chasing the thrills that a great scary movie can bring, which is no easy feat the more entrenched in the genre we become. That proves especially true in the current digital age, where there’s an overwhelming sea of options spread across multiple streaming services and platforms that can make finding the scariest offerings tricky. We’re here to help. As we head into the weekend, here’s a roundup of ten of horror’s most intense, bone-chilling movies.
These are some of the scariest horror movies you can and should stream this weekend.

Eileen Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Thomasin McKenzie, Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland, Owen Teague, Anne Hathaway
Director: William Oldroyd
Review of Eileen Is Out! (Picture Credit: Youtube)
What’s Good: Thomasin McKenzie’s portrayal of Eileen is refreshing, devoid of traditional expectations, while Anne Hathaway captivates with her artificial yet electric depiction of Rebecca. Marin Ireland’s exceptional performance adds authentic trauma, and the film’s cold, desolate portrayal of women resonates.
What’s Bad: The narrative loses its initial psychological complexity, devolving into a thinly developed crime plot. The film needs to work on the balance between psychosexual strangeness and a more conventional storyline, leaving the audience uncertain about its direction.
Loo Break: “‘Eileen” offers a brief pause around the 45-minute mark when Eileen enters Rebecca’s office. Feel free to take a break but return promptly for the unfolding narrative.
Watch or Not?: “Eileen” is a film...

As the year comes to a close, we look back on all of the wonderful moments that cinema has provided. We’ve got a nice mix of films that took the box office by storm and lesser-seen gems that you really should take the time to check out yourself. From an angry pilgrim to something in the walls, all the way to rich people and the strange things they do for kicks, we’re covering them all because this is Our 10 Favorite Horror Films of 2023.

Great horror never gets old. The genre was as alive as ever in 2023, with the year's buzziest titles ranging from the large-scale devastation of "Godzilla Minus One" (yeah, sci-fi monsters bring horror too!) to the gnarly indie frisson of "Talk to Me," from the franchise-galvanizing prowess of "Evil Dead Rise" to the surprising earnestness of "Saw X" (and the whatever-the-heck-that-was of "Infinity Pool"). However, many of the year's best horror offerings did not achieve the levels of buzz generated by the aforementioned flicks.
This list compiles 15 exercises in fear and dread from 2023 which were grossly underrated, in that they received mixed or poor responses from critics and/or audiences. We've honed in on the ones that failed to garner the amount of attention or acclaim that their efforts deserved. Some have a lot in common with each other, and some are wildly different, but all of them are worth watching if you're a horror enthusiast.

Welcome to the Scene to Seen Podcast. I am Valerie Complex Associate editor and film writer at Deadline.
I have a disclaimer. I talk to actress Thomasin Mackenzie, director William Oldroyd, script writers Ottessa Moshfeg and Luke Goebel, about the Neon film Eileen, but this episode is going to be split into two.

To say it’s been a strange, turbulent year might be a bit of an understatement. Historically, 2023 marks the year of the dual strikes by WGA and SAG-AFTRA, the first time in over 60 years that Hollywood writers and actors went on strike at the same time. While both fought for better working conditions and deservedly won, the work stoppage no doubt plays a large role in the theatrical slate both this year and at least into the next. Through it all, horror continues to thrive. Box office records were shattered and indie darlings and international gems continue to surprise audiences. Of course, it’s in the most turbulent times where horror thrives most; audiences turn to horror for catharsis or release from real world anxieties and fears.
That reflects in 2023’s horror offerings, which has given everything from unexpected lo-fi indie hits like Skinamarink and Screambox’s can’t-miss The Outwaters...

The 2024 Film Independent Spirit Award nominations — see the full list below — were unveiled on Tuesday, December 5, crowning the past year’s achievements in indie film. As the yin-yang decal on our yoga teacher’s Subaru Crosstrek reminds us thrice a week, every natural force or entity has its perfect mirror inverse. And so, just as during the summer we escaped to movie theaters in order to cool down from record high temps, the temperature extremes caused by climate collapse now drive us back to those same movie theaters for warmth, nursing our frigid tootsies at the hearth of the annual awards season dump of very exciting Don’t-Miss Indies. But Tldr; Happy Holidays!

Three very different movies, original, with arthouse cred and in theaters for weeks, are drawing audiences showing welcome depth and breadth in the specialty market as awards season kicks off. You would not call Eileen Dunlop “innocent.” A twentysomething with a little college under her belt — even if she’d hadn’t dropped out when her mom died, she still would have become a secretary, what with this being the early 1960s and all — Eileen has her hands full taking care of her permanently drunk, ex-cop dad. She works at a prison for juvenile offenders in a blue-collar Massachusetts burg. If she spies a couple in a car parked near hers, she may shove a fistful of snow down the front of her skirt.

From the very first few minutes of Eileen, the audience is clued that this won’t be your conventional mid-20th century set drama. The eponymous character masturbates twice, has a wild sex fantasy about a co-worker, and threatens to murder her father.

One of Hollywood’s most venerated auteurs has a new movie out this weekend. Will awards season pay attention? That’s the question facing most of these films, which tackle tough topics like Alzheimer’s, the stock market, and gay twincest.
The contender to watch this week: “The Killer”
David Fincher‘s latest has divided critics, with The New York Times‘ Manohla Dargis calling it “boring” and NPR’s Justin Chang declaring it “perfectly paced.” But if you think about it, a lot of Fincher’s work has proved at least mildly polarizing. He often overcomes those divides by the time Oscar nominations are announced, yet “The Killer” might be too cold and grim even for a Fincher flick. Michael Fassbender, at his most effortlessly slick, plays a nameless hitman suffering the consequences of a rare botched job. Fassbender’s fine-tuned performance is complemented by deft editing and another banger...

Sitting in her shabby car by a foggy waterfront, Eileen Dunlop (Thomasin McKenzie) is waiting for the smoke to envelop her. It gently unfurls through the vehicle, and as she stares out past the grey horizon of the ocean, you sense that she’s used to pondering what it would be like to be swallowed into nothingness. Eileen then turns to look at a couple having sex in a nearby car, and after opening the door to grab a fistful of filthy snow from the ground, she shoves it down her crotch—something cold on something waiting to burn.

"Who is this?" Here's another good horror short to watch this spooky season. A Film by Vera Vaughn is a surreal psychological thriller from a filmmaker named Sorrel Brae, and it first premiered back in 2015. We never posted this short back then, so no better time then now to feature it (thanks to a reminder from Short of the Week). In this ghost story for the digital age, filmmaker Vera Vaughn (played by acclaimed American actress Marin Ireland) works late into the night, editing her suspense/thriller about a woman jeopardized by a mysterious home intruder... But when she's interrupted by a knock at the door, Vera's world takes a frightening turn toward the surreal as life threatens to imitate art — or is it the other way around? This is a solid and compelling film involving only one actor that requires that one actor to pull off two roles to make it all believable.

The Eileen trailer indicates the film’s dark tone and 1960s location, as well as a seductive and brutal story.
New details about Neon’s next thriller, which stars Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie, are revealed in the first trailer for Eileen. Eileen, directed by William Oldroyd, is based on Ottessa Moshfegh’s book of the same name. The plot follows McKenzie’s titular young prison worker as his life turns dark after Hathaway’s Rebecca begins working as a psychologist at the same jail.
Eileen | Official Trailer
The trailer for Eileen carefully creates a feeling of mystery, yet the bits seen and the dramatic soundtrack reveal that the women are on a deadly path. It effortlessly conveys a sense of dread and some of the trouble that fills Moshfegh’s story.
In the latest trailer for the psychological thriller, mild-mannered Thomasin McKenzie suffers an extreme transition when she meets Anne Hathaway.

Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie are spiraling into something dark in the first trailer for Neon’s Eileen.
Directed by William Oldroyd, written by Ottessa Moshfegh and Luke Goebel, and also starring Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland and Owen Teague, Eileen follows McKenzie’s titular young secretary, employed at a prison during a bitter Massachusetts winter in 1964.
The more than two-minute trailer teases a doozy of a day — “one of those days you’ll never forget” — for Eileen after the arrival of Hathaway’s Rebecca, the new prison psychologist. “She may be easy on the eyes,” one man says as he introduces her to prison staff. “But I assure you, she is very smart.”
The blonde-haired, pink-lipped smoker leaves Eileen feeling off-kilter, as someone who “lives a little differently than most people.” She sees something in Eileen, who is hardly normal and far from “average,” according to the psychologist.

IGN’s Matt Donato calls it a “nifty little shapeshifter of a thriller,” while Vox’s Alissa Wilkinson says, “Eileen is dank and disturbing and, when you’re in the mood for something that will mess you up,...

JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the opportunity to watch Lady Macbeth director William Oldroyd’s “terrific potboiler” Eileen at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (you can read his 8/10 review at This Link), and soon a wider audience will have their chance to check it out. Neon will be giving Eileen a theatrical release in December, starting in New York and Los Angeles on December 1st and then expanding across North America on December 8th. With those release dates drawing near, a trailer for the film has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

There are a lot of Stephen King adaptations out in the world; some are fantastic, others are… not so great. One that lands in the not-so-great category is The Langoliers, the 1995 miniseries based on the novella by Stephen King. However, just because one adaptation failed doesn’t mean somebody can’t try again, and The Boogeyman director Rob Savage has previously expressed a desire to tackle a remake of The Langoliers.

While speaking with ComicBook.com, Rob Savage said that while the issue of the rights are still being dealt with, he thinks there’s a “good shot” he’s able to bring The Langoliers to life.
“There’s a bit of naughtiness when it comes to the rights, but I think hopefully we’ll be able to sort it out,” Savage said. “We’ve got such a great idea for developing that one out from the short story.
