John Clayton, the longtime ESPN football reporter nicknamed “The Professor” for his breadth of knowledge about the NFL, died Friday in Washington state after a brief undisclosed illness, his family told ESPN.
“His wife Pat and sister Amy were at his side and communicated earlier he passed peacefully after a brief illness,” his longtime ESPN colleague Chris Mortensen tweeted. “We loved John. We are mourning his loss.”
Clayton’s five-decade career began when he was still a senior at Duquesne University, hired by the Pittsburgh Press to cover the Steelers. But he rose to prominence in his 20-plus years at ESPN, where his bespectacled appearance and encyclopedic knowledge of football won him wide admiration.
After leaving ESPN in 2017, he spent the last five seasons spent as a sideline reporter for the Seattle Seahawks Radio Network and hosted the “John Clayton Weekend” show on Seattle Sports 710. Just 10 days before his death,...

One of the longest tenured sportscasters is calling it a career. Dick Stockton is retiring after a 55-year career that included more than 1,500 network TV games across the big four U.S. professional sports.
Stockton spent the last 27 years with Fox as part of its NFL broadcast team; last year, he was paired in the booth with newcomer Mark Schlereth.
Prior to joining Fox, Stockton worked for CBS Sports, calling a variety of sports including the NFL, NBA (lead play-by-play from 1982-1990), MLB and college basketball (lead play-by-play for NCAA Regional Finals), in addition to the world swimming and diving championships, championship boxing, track and field, the Pan American Games and the Olympic Games.
Earlier in his career, NBC tapped him to cover NFL games and NCAA tournament basketball, and he also called play-by-play for Oakland Athletics games for Kron-tv in San Francisco. Stockton first began broadcasting in 1965 at a...

Espn’s longtime NFL analyst Mark Schlereth has jumped to Fox Sports 1. The former Denver Broncos player tweeted out the news on Tuesday, stating that the move is effective immediately. “I’m excited to announce that starting today 7/11/17 I have moved to @FS1 as a studio analyst. Truly blessed to have this opportunity,” he wrote. Schlereth’s FS1 debut came on Tuesday’s episode of “Undisputed” alongside Skip Bayless, Shannon Sharpe and Joy Taylor. He had previously been with Espn since 2001. Also Read: Laila Ali Talks Muhammad Ali Ahead of Espn Humanitarian Awards: 'He Is in a Better Place Now' The transition was reportedly in.

Travis Kelce picked Maya Benberry to be his girlfriend in the season finale of Catching Kelce. The decision came down to the wire for the girls in the two-hour special, which started with four girls still in it: Avery Schlereth, Lauren Schwab, Maya Benberry and Veronica Harwood. First to be eliminated was Lauren, who only last week he described as being the girl he thought of as “wife material”. Next up was Avery, daughter of former Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins Guard Mark Schlereth. The pair had their moments during the season but ultimately Travis thought there was a lack of chemistry....read more...

For those who have been following “Ballers” Season 2, you don’t need to be told the level of baller-dom that’s been achieved over these 10 episodes. But not every day was smooth sailing for these gladiators of the game that is life, as we’ve been privileged enough to observe.

Ricky Jerret (John David Washington) struggled to make perhaps the most important decision of his entire career — picking his next, and perhaps final, deal as a player. On the November 9 episode of Espn NFL Kickoff, hosts Trey Wingo, Mark Schlereth, and Tedy Bruschi, all decided to have some fun. Apparently one of the hosts decided to make a reference to The Princess Bride, and then the hosts competed to jam as many references into a half-hour show as possible.
Here’s a video of most of them.

And here’s an interview with the anchors telling how it all came about.

How many “Princess Bride” quotes can you put into a 30-minute show (plus commercials)? A lot, as it turns out. But who would have thunk that it would show up on … Espn’s NFL Kick Off show? Inconceivable! But that’s what the show’s co-hosts Mark Schlereth, Trey Wingo and Teddy Bruschi did this weekend, tossing in as many “Princess Bride” quotes and references as they could in the 30-minute show. Not all of the references work, of course, but if you’re a fan of the Rob Reiner movie (based on a script by William Goldman, who adapted the story from his own book of the same name), there’s no denying that either the three co-hosts made a concerted effort to throw a shout-out to the movie, or whoever wrote the episode’s script is a big fan and slipped it in without them knowing. I like...

Though upon its initial release Rob Reiner's The Princess Bride was only a modest box office success, the 1987 feature that blended fantasy, romance, adventure and comedy has become an unadulterated cult hit. In the '90s a slumber party wasn't complete without a VHS copy of the beloved tale of Westley and Buttercup, and today you can and will be roundly scorned by friends for not recognizing it's many, many quotable lines should they roll into conversation, which is inevitable. Still, it was a pleasant surprise to find that Espn's NFL Kickoff hosts Trey Wingo, Mark Schlereth, and Tedy Bruschi can be counted among the ardent fans of Princess Bride, as they showed in force on Sunday night's show. Over the course of a half hour, the trio dropped such notable quotables as "Life is pain; anyone who says differently is selling something," and "it's not his fault he's...

David Walton has been tapped as the male lead opposite Amanda Peet in NBC's single-camera comedy pilot Bent. The project, from writer-exec producer Tad Quill, is a romantic comedy about a recently divorced Type A single mother (Peet) who tries hard not to fall for the sexy surfer dude contractor (Walton) she’s hired to re-do her kitchen. For Walton, the casting is in second position to softly-rated midseason comedy Perfect Couples which shares the same network, NBC, and studio, Ums, as Bent. He is the second Perfect Couples star to book a pilot in second position, following Kyle Bornheimer's casting in Fox's comedy The Council of Dads. This is the third consecutive comedy pilot at NBC for Walton, repped by Gersh and Crestview, after 2009's 100 Questions and 2010's Perfect Couples. Party Down alum Ken Marino is set to co-star opposite Rob Riggle in CBS' comedy pilot Home Game.

The future of "Two and a Half Men" is, let's say, cloudy at the moment.
If we had to guess right now, we'd say that the show, which is currently the most-watched comedy on TV, will be back in some form -- with or without Charlie Sheen -- for 2011-12. CBS will announce its lineup for next season in mid-May, which means the network, Warner Bros. TV, creators Chuck Lorre and Lee Aronsohn and Sheen have about two and a half months to figure out what happens next.
But what if the worst-case scenario for CBS happens and "Men" doesn't come back at all?
Yes, the network would probably suffer some in the ratings -- but it would probably also come out Ok. CBS also has the No. 2 and 3 comedies in terms of viewers in "The Big Bang Theory" and "Mike & Molly"; both shows are also in the Top 25 this...

Former Saturday Night Live castmember Rob Riggle's career has slowed down since he departed the long-running sketch show, aside from his stint as a Daily Show correspondent. But he's coming back with a bang: he's just signed on to the lead in a new Mark Wahlberg-produced multicamera CBS comedy Home Game, based loosely on the life of former NFL star Mark Schlereth and his life as a (retired from the pros) husband and father.

Tell us if you’ve heard this one before. Rob Riggle (The Daily Show, SNL, The Hangover) will star in a CBS sitcom about a former NFL player who comes home to his family after retiring from the game of football. Some of our older readers may remember former Detroit Lion Alex Karras starred in Webster with Emmanuel Lewis and if you blinked, you might have missed former New York Giant Michael Strahan in the 2009 Fox sitcom Brothers.

Exclusive: Home Game has won the Rob Riggle sweepstakes. Riggle is set to star in the CBS multicamera comedy, from Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson's Leverage. The project, loosely based on the experiences of former NFL star Mark Schlereth, centers on Mark (Riggle), a retired NFL player who returns home to his wife Lisa (Constance Zimmer) and daughters. Finding a starring vehicle for the former Daily Show correspondent has been a big priority for CBS, which in the fall inked a third consecutive talent deal with him. Riggle was initially attached to a comedy from Saturday Night veteran Robert Smigel. When that project didn't go to pilot, the network sent him 3 other scripts, including Home Game. With his background as a Marine where he was often deployed and his current profession as an actor where he goes away for filming and touring, Riggle immediately connected with the character in...

CBS brass had sports on their minds today, with pilot orders to two sports-themed multicamera comedies - an untitled sitcom inspired by Espn personality Colin Cowherd’s outspoken sports talk show, The Herd with Colin Cowherd, and Home Game, a family show about a retired NFL player inspired by former NFL star Mark Schlereth and his family and executive produced by Mark Wahlberg. The untitled sports radio show was written by comedy veterans Bill Martin and Mike Schiff (Grounded for Life) who are executive producing, with Cowherd serving as producer. Also executive producing are Eric and Kim Tannenbaum, whose company co-produces the project with CBS TV Studios. This marks Eric and Kim Tannenbaum's first pilot order since they relaunched their Tannenbaum Co. banner last summer and set up shop at CBS TV Studios. They were previously partnered with Mitch Hurwitz at Sony Pictures TV for 3.5 years. An interesting bit of trivia.
