The good news: Tommy Wirkola’s holiday-themed action-thriller Violent Night scared up a solid 13.3 million from 3,682 theaters in its box debut, while holdover Black Panther: Wakanda Forever continued to be a crowd-pleaser in topping the chart with 17.6 million from 3,855 locations.
Wakanda Forever has now earned an impressive 394 million domestically to pass up fellow 2022 superhero pics The Batman (369 million) and Thor: Love and Thunder (343 million). It is also the first film since Spider-Man: No Way Home to stay No. 1 for four consecutive weekends. Overseas, the Marvel superhero sequel, directed by Ryan Coogler, added 20.2 million to its coffers for a foreign tally of 339 million and 733 million globally.
Violent Night was the only new wide studio release over the Dec. 2-4 weekend. From Universal and 87North, the genre pic follows a team of mercenaries who break into the compound of a wealthy family on Christmas Eve and take everyone hostage.

The Thanksgiving box office is off to a decidedly worrisome start, with overall revenue paling in comparison to other years.
For Disney, it appears to a case of feast or famine. While Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will stay atop the box office chart for the third weekend in a row with a hearty gross of 60 million to 65 million for the five-days (Wednesday through Sunday), Disney Animation’s Strange World is in serious trouble.
Wakanda Forever led Wednesday with 10 million from 4,174 theaters for a domestic total of 313.7 million.
There was no feasting, however for Strange World, which posted an opening day gross of 4.2 million from 4,174 sites after earning a lukewarm B CinemaScore. At this pace, the family film is looking at a five-day opening of 24 million-26 million, the worst opening for a Disney Animation Thanksgiving title in history (Disney Animation titles, such as Frozen,...

As Westwood’s Geffen Playhouse celebrated the opening day of The Inheritance on Sunday, there was a special guest seated in the audience all day long: Matthew López. And what a day-turned-night it was.
The Tony-winning playwright turned up for an epic day at the Geffen, which presented part one and part two back-to-back with a block party in between.
The day’s schedule kicked off as doors opened at noon for a cocktail hour that preceded the first performance, from 1-4:30 p.m. An outdoor picnic followed from 4:30-6 p.m. featuring boxed lunches, an ice cream truck, a coffee cart and other treats sprinkled about on Le Conte Avenue, a spread that also featured a production-approved cherry tree. Then a musical performance and DJ in the Geffen courtyard from 6-7 p.m. followed by Part 2 and a post-show party...

After an all-night graduation beach party, a group of hung-over students wake up under blazing sun to find their numbers somewhat depleted. An enormous alien creature has burrowed down deep and anyone foolish enough to make contact with the sand finds themselves at the mercy of a sea of flesh-eating tentacles.
Can you say Blood Beach?
Ok so maybe that’s not fair. After all Jeffrey Bloom’s 1980 fear-flick, despite having a similar premise – something eating people on the beach, dragging them under the sand – is world’s apart from the gory body-horror of Isaac Gabaeff’s film. Whereas that film often played for oddball humour both intentionally and unintentionally, The Sand plays things very straight.

Amber Heard was nineteen when she played the title character in Jonathan Levine's slasher film All the Boys Love Mandy Lane; she can at least get away with playing a seventeen year-old. Mandy Lane, which debuts this month on Blu-ray, is better known for its reputation of having been shelved for seven years following its debut at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival for reasons best served by another article. Up to this point, Ms. Heard was already a veteran of four films and several television appearances; this is her first real starring role, as the film rests on her shoulders. She gives quite a remarkably natural performance and having seen her work since this 2005-lensed outing, I would attribute her onscreen “nervousness” as the object of affection by testosterone-driven wolves in her midst to her skill as a serious dramatic actress than to an inability to relax...

The Pain is Calling, Oh Mandy: Levinson’s Satisfying Debut Finally Hits Theaters
Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival way back in 2006, Jonathan Levine’s directorial debut, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane will finally hit theaters. Three subsequent films by Levine have been completed and released in the interim, and star Amber Heard has gone on to become a notable rising star in the Hollywood film system. Curiously, his debut is modeled after 1980s slasher flicks, though featuring better character development than many of the grindhouse titles it pays homage to. Trashily compelling in its over the top handling of the male gaze and consumption of the female image, there’s hardly anything revolutionary going on in the thanklessly delayed flick, and it’s blighted with a wowser of an ill-advised final twist. But its rough-hewn edges bring a certain engaging charm, especially considering the film is unlike anything...
