The Wonder Weeks
But if, on the other hand, you are family people who believe in a better world and that your children could live peacefully with AI and sustainability… The Wonder Weeks offers you a gentle proposal and a chance to encounter the challenges of raising a baby.
Movie review
On a technical level, a correct film, with good performances of rather light comedy, the kind that won’t win you a Cesar or an Oscar.
It has a simple, natural script and is treated as a light comedy (also) at script and direction level, with a slow pace that marks well the times of the sequences and these, in the general tone,...

In Netflix Belgian thriller Noise Mattias (Ward Kerremans), a social influencer with a baby son, uncovers secrets from the past when he and his wife, Liv (Sallie Harmsen), move back to his childhood home. It’s twisty and tinged with horror, but it also requires attention to follow what’s going on, and indeed, what’s real and what is not.
Co-written and directed by Steffen Geypens, it’s a small-town chiller that’s high on atmosphere, in particular (as you might expect) the audio elements as the increasingly unsettled Mattias dives down a rabbit hole of his family history, while becoming more and more disconnected from his child.
But what happened and why? We break it down.
Why have Liv, Mattias and Julius moved house?
Mattias’ father Pol (Johan Leysen) has dementia and is now in a nearby care facility. It’s close enough to the house where he...

A psychological suspense thriller very much in the style of Henry James… except for the more than obvious discrepancies, and it’s modernised. Good photography, good performances in a script that does not want – at any time – to escape from the genre’s tempting clutches.
About the Film
A film with very good photography and with very well-directed and curated scenes for a script that, however, does not want to step outside the established patterns of these psychological horror and “house in the suburbs” and family secrets films.
The best of the movie: the actress, Sallie Harmsen – who looks (more than suspiciously) like Naomi Watts making one of those movies that the phenomenal Australian actress delights in doing. What happens when heartbreak and pizza collide? If you let the loneliness grow too much, it will become a Pizza Monster! Hungry for nothing but tomatoes and cheese and tasty toppings. Pizza Monster is a dark comedy short film made by Dutch filmmaker Kurt Platvoet. It premiered back in 2018 at the Imagine Film Festival and Fantastic Fest, and is now available online to watch. From the tears of his failed relationship and a pile of pizza leftovers, a monster is born giving a once rejected man a new lease on life and a chance at love again. What will be the fate of this monster? The short film stars Benjamin Moen as Leon, and Sallie Harmsen as the Pizza Monster. This has some fun moments in it, but I wish there was more with the Pizza Monster before she begins to lose all of our delicious ingredients. She seems cool!

Moloch opens in 1991 as a young girl feeding a mouse is frightened by the sounds of what sounds like an extremely violent attack in the room above her. Soon blood is raining from between the floorboards and pouring down the walls onto the terrified girl.
Thirty years later, Betriek is now grown up and has a daughter of her own, Hanna (Noor van der Velden). It was Betriek’s grandmother that we heard being killed in the prologue. Her father Roelof was traumatized by her death and still drunkenly waits for the killer to return. Her mother suffers from an unknown illness that subjects her to what seems to be seizures. A hit with audiences at the Fantasia International Film Festival and about to be released on Shudder, Moloch is a haunting tale set on the edge of the Netherlands’ Stijfveen peat bog, which begins with the unearthing of a centuries old bog body and goes on to deal with the unearthing of dark secrets in the local community and one family in particular. Sallie Harmsen plays Betriek, a locally born woman who has found herself drawn back to the area despite a troubled past, whilst Alexandre Willaume stars as Jonas, the visiting archaeologist whom she assists with translation and with whom she forms a tentative relationship, as ancient horrors gradually close in. When I met Nico at the festival, I asked if bog bodies were where it all began for him.
“It sparked my imagination when I was very young,” he tells me.

Bog bodies have been being unearthed for centuries now, and have always proven to be objects of special fascination. Often bound, sometimes exotically garbed, they have generally been stabbed or garrotted before being placed in bogs in what is widely interpreted as an act of sacrifice. In 1897, the body of a teenage girl who had died around 1,000 years previously was found in the Stijfveen peat bog near the village of Yde in the Netherlands, exciting all sorts of local speculation. Nico van den Brink’s film pays clear homage to this discovery as it tells the story of a remarkably similar body found in the same area in the present day, and hints at a tradition passed down across centuries.
Sallie Harmsen plays Betriek, a young, widowed mother living on the edge of that peat bog, where her family has resided for centuries. She’s carrying deep trauma from the loss.

The world of Wall Street trading and investment banking are such toxic environments, it’s inconceivable that anyone could create a series about the men and women who populate it that paints them in a positive light, let alone encourages empathy. Mainstream banking culture is rife with brutal competition, with the winners usually being whoever makes more money. The CW’s new dramatic thriller “Devils” certainly portrays the moral bankruptcy that pervades elements of society where criminal capitalistic urges reign supreme, but against the backdrop of a global pandemic leaving millions jobless in austere financial times, and economic disparity hardly diminishing, it feels like a series out of time.
Based on the novel “I Diavoli” by Guido Maria Brera and acquired by The CW after its spring 2020 debut in Italy, “Devils” follows the psychological chess match that transpires between Massimo Ruggero (Alessandro Borghi), the head of trading at one of...

There have been a lot of adaptations (primarily for TV) of megaselling author James Patterson’s pulpy fictions, none particularly memorable, with the possible exception of hit 1997 thriller “Kiss the Girls.” But then, his books seldom aim for much more than disposable entertainment, so it’s apt enough that their screen versions should follow suit.
By that standard, there’s nothing really wrong with “The Postcard Killings,” which derives from a one-shot 2010 collaboration with Swedish crime novelist Liza Marklund that hit No. 1 on the U.S. bestseller list. But there’s nothing very right about the British-American co-production, either. Starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan as an NYPD detective tracking his own daughter’s serial killers across Europe, this uninspired detour into impersonally commercial English-language terrain for Bosnian director Danis Tanovic (an Oscar winner for 2001’s “No Man’s Land”) should provide Patterson’s fans and undemanding miscellaneous viewers with an acceptably slick...

21 Days: The Heineken Kidnapping
Stars: Rutger Hauer, Korneel Evers, Teun Kuilboer, Sallie Harmsen, Marcel Hensema | Written by Maarten Treurniet, Kees van Beijnum | Directed by Maarten Treurniet
Films that are based on true stories can be quite controversial. With 21 Days: The Heineken Kidnapping there is a message at the start of the film to make it clear that it’s a fictional account of events, as if to emphasise that it is not fully the truth, it’s like a legal catch all statement to say they can make it all up. This warning though is probably due to the fact that one of the kidnappers who is still alive is not very happy with the emphasis not only on his character, but the fact that he appears to be somewhat of a sociopath. Then again, although the film is based on the basic facts of the case a lot of it is actually made up,...
