Universal Pictures and Peacock forked over an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute a trilogy of sequels to the 1973 classic The Exorcist, which we’re going to another collaboration between Blumhouse Productions and directed David Gordon Green (who recently delivered a trilogy of Halloween sequels), they were definitely expecting the first entry in the new trilogy to go over better with audiences than The Exorcist: Believer did when it was released last October. (You can read our 4/10 review Here.) The box office numbers were okay, the movie pulled in $137 million on a $30 million budget, but Universal was hoping for a lot better than “okay,” and the reactions were largely negative. Soon after the release of Believer, we heard that Universal and Blumhouse still intended to carry out the trilogy, but the follow-ups would be reworked. While speaking to The Direct this week, producer...

David Gordon Green has exited “The Exorcist: Deceiver,” the 2025 sequel to last year’s poorly received sequel in the horror franchise. Universal and Blumhouse are searching for a new director.
“Deceiver” has been removed from Universal’s release calendar and replaced with Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson biopic “Michael,” arriving April 18, 2025. Meanwhile, Green is in production on “Nutcrackers” starring Ben Stiller and Season 4 of HBO’s “The Righteous Gemstones.”
“The Exorcist: Believer” failed to conjure up big bucks at the box office and received frighteningly bad reviews, with Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman writing, “The clichés of demonic possession pile up with dutiful nostalgia, but they’ve lost their shock value.”
“Believer” brought in $65 million at the domestic box office, plus $70 million in international markets. Green wrote the screenplay with Peter Sattler and shares a “story by” credit with Scott Teems and “Righteous Gemstones” mastermind Danny McBride, who also...

Fresh from the recent Halloween sequels, director and co-writer David Gordon Green takes a crack at another big-name horror franchise with this legacy sequel to The Exorcist, the first of a planned trilogy. The result is something of a mixed bag, and your enjoyment of the film will largely depend on your relationship to the original movie.
In an effective prologue, African-American photographer Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom Jr.), has to make a horrific choice between saving the life of his wife, or that of his unborn child, following a devastating earthquake. Cut to fourteen years later, where we find Victor as a single parent in Ohio, living with his teenage daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett), whose best friend is her white school...

Peacock announced on Friday that The Exorcist: Believer, the first in a new trilogy of films based on the 1973 horror classic, The Exorcist, will debut exclusively on the platform on December 1, there joining titles like The Black Phone and Five Nights at Freddy’s, among many others.
Hailing from Universal and Blumhouse, Believer introducers viewers to Victor Fielding, who, since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, has raised their daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett) on his own. But when Angela and her friend Katherine (Olivia Marcum) disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil.

In David Gordon Green's "Halloween Kills," it's revealed that Michael Myers is responsible for the trauma of an entire town, not just a few victims. The survivors of Myers' 1978 rampage and the citizens of Haddonfield, Il in general are shown to still be dealing with the aftershocks of The Shape's evil, a condition that has lain dormant for 40 years until his reemergence in 2018. Myers' new reign of terror causes a mounting mass hysteria within Haddonfield, resulting in violent and erratic behavior from a mob previously made up of good people that can only be described as self-destructive.
The leader of that mob, Tommy Doyle (Anthony Michael Hall), has been particularly traumatized ever since he and Lindsay Wallace (Kyle Richards) were saved by their babysitter, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), on that fateful night in '78. So it's no surprise that in an earlier draft of the script for "Kills,...

David Gordon Green's 2018 slasher film "Halloween," a direct sequel to John Carpenter's 1978 slasher film also called "Halloween," famously ignored the nine "Halloween" sequels and remakes made from 1981 to 2009. The original film starred Jamie Lee Curtis as a teenage babysitter named Laurie Strode who ran afoul of a mysterious, silent masked killer named Michael Myers. In the original "Halloween II," it was revealed that Laurie was Michael's long-lost sister, a conceit Green would handily abandon for his 2018 update. Instead, Laurie was, 40 years later, still wounded by the events of the 1978 film, and had become a ragged survivalist, outfitting her home with booby traps and training herself how to use weapons in the off chance that Michael should ever escape the local mental institution and begin his killing spree again. Perhaps predictably, that very thing happens.
Green's "Halloween" ends with Laurie trapping Michael in a burning building, seemingly to die forever.

Despite multiple red herrings, clues, and characters like Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn) blaming Pazuzu for the dual possessions haunting The Exorcist: Believer, the entity responsible is actually a very different demonic figure from Mesopotamian lore: Lamashtu.
While the demon can be barely glimpsed in a quick flash on screen, makeup effects co-designers Chris Nelson and Vincent Van Dyke give a closer look at their stellar work via Instagram.
The Exorcist: Believer, now available on Digital, frequently makes callbacks and ties to the original film by writer William Peter Blatty and director William Friedkin. Moreover, it frequently alludes to Pazuzu as the one behind the mysterious disappearance, reappearance, and subsequent possessions of young girls Angela (Lidya Jewett) and Katherine (Olivia O’Neill). It seems reasonable that the demon first encountered by Father Merrin (Max von Sydow) might be back thanks to frequent references and calls for “Mother” and a seemingly intimate familiarity with Chris MacNeil.

The Exorcist: Believer (our review can be read at This Link), the latest entry in the Exorcist franchise, didn’t go over well with critics or the general audience… which pretty much makes it a typical Exorcist movie, because none of these movies – other than the original The Exorcist and Exorcist III – are very popular, even among the horror crowd. Over the weekend, David Gordon Green’s legacy sequel The Exorcist: Believer passed a big milestone at the worldwide box office, officially crossing the $100 million landmark.
Worldwide, The Exorcist: Believer has thus far scared up a total of $107.5 million in its 17 days of release, $54.2 million of which was made here in the United States.
For the sake of comparison, Gordon Green’s Halloween Ends, the final part of a trilogy of legacy sequels, finished its worldwide run with $104.3 million last Halloween season.
The reported production budget for The Exorcist: Believer was in the ballpark of $30 million, meaning it’s likely turning a profit in theaters. The catch? Universal spent $400 million acquiring the rights to The Exorcist, so it’s a bit complicated to measure the success of this one.

Director David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer is set to be the first film in a planned trilogy from Blumhouse and Universal, part of a $400 million deal to bring the franchise back to life on the big screen. But after the box office under-performance of Believer, and reviews slamming the film almost across the board, are those original plans still in place?
Last we heard, The Exorcist: Believer will first be followed by The Exorcist: Deceiver, which has already been dated for theatrical release on April 18, 2025. We assumed David Gordon Green would return to direct all three movies in the franchise – much like he did with Blumhouse’s recent Halloween trilogy – but that may not actually end up being the case.
In a new chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Gordon Green casts doubt on those expectations.

There’s a new Exorcist movie in theatres now, The Exorcist: Believer (read our review Here), and for the first time in the franchise Ellen Burstyn reprises the role of Chris MacNeil, the character she played in the 1973 classic The Exorcist. Her presence has been a major selling point in the marketing of this movie – but there’s another returning cast member who makes a brief appearance in the film. We heard months ago that Linda Blair (who was also in Exorcist II: The Heretic) would be showing up in The Exorcist: Believer, and during an interview with People magazine director David Gordon Green talked about reuniting Burstyn and Blair for “a beautiful moment”.
Green told People, “It was just a really special moment to be a part of that reunion, to be a part of that legacy, the connection that’s so monumental that the two of those performers have.

The franchise’s first movie in nearly twenty years, director David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer arrived on the big screen over the weekend, but how did it perform?
The legacy sequel, the first film in a planned trilogy of movies, topped the box office here in the United States, scaring up $27.2 million in its debut weekend across 3,663 theaters.
Worldwide, The Exorcist: Believer debuted to $45 million, a number that exceeds the reported $30 million production budget of the new movie. But there’s some fine print to that.
The catch? Universal spent $400 million acquiring the rights to The Exorcist, the studio banking on big box office numbers to make the investment worthwhile. It’s likely they hoped to replicate the success of Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy, but that film debuted to $76 million here in the States back in 2018 – almost three times the US debut of Believer. “Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding has raised their daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett) on his own.
“But when Angela and her friend Katherine (Olivia Marcum) disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened,...

There’s a new Exorcist movie in theatres now. The Exorcist: Believer (read our review Here) is tracking to have the highest opening weekend of the entire franchise and might end up pulling in an amount somewhere in the range of 30 to 36 million. Its theatrical run got started last night, and according to The Hollywood Reporter it drew in $2.85 million from those Thursday preview screenings.
Most of the film’s reviews are negative – it currently has a 20% score on Rotten Tomatoes and JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray described it as “abysmal” – so we’ll have to wait and see if that’s going to have any impact on the opening weekend box office.
Director David Gordon Green crafted the story for The Exorcist: Believer with Danny McBride (who wrote all three of the new Halloweens with him) and their Halloween Kills co-writer Scott Teems, then wrote the screenplay with Peter Sattler...

The franchise’s first movie in 20 years, The Exorcist: Believer is now playing in theaters nationwide, the first film in a planned trilogy of legacy sequels from Universal, Blumhouse, and Morgan Creek, and director David Gordon Green (Halloween). The film opened in many theaters last night for Thursday previews, and the first box office numbers have arrived.
The Exorcist: Believer scared up $2.85 million on Thursday night here in the United States, opening last night in 3,050 theaters. It expands to 3,663 theaters beginning today.
Deadline notes that the film is “on its way to a potential high $20M to $30M.”
For the sake of comparison, the well-received Saw X sliced into $2 million last Thursday night, and the film went on to make $18.3 million across its opening weekend. So it’s pretty safe to expect that The Exorcist: Believer will make its way to at least $20 million in the coming days.
The catch?...

This article contains mild spoilers for "The Exorcist: Believer."
In William Friedkin's 1973 adaptation of William Peter Blatty's "The Exorcist," the film opens not on the possession of 12-year-old Regan MacNeil, but on Catholic priest and archaeologist Father Merrin (Max von Sydow), who is on a dig in Northern Iraq. He comes across a medallion of Saint Joseph, as well as an idol representing the demon Pazuzu. Fans of the film "The Exorcist II: The Heretic" will know that this is representative of the demon that will later possess Regan. According to Babylonian and Assyrian myth, Pazuzu is a wind demon, and his presence in the opening indicates that Merrin has dealt with Pazuzu before.
But with this desert setting, this scene also implies that there's something foreign — other, about this statue and medallion. Almost as if the intrusion of artifacts from the Middle East is truly responsible for...

So October has finally arrived and the studios are truly “bringing out the big guns” in order to “scare up” some box office bucks at the ole’ haunted multiplex. We’re talking the “classics” here. No, it’s not another Scream entry, since this one goes back a lot further in fear film history. Not as far as the “thirsty Count” since we’ve had two flicks about the true first “bat-man” in the past year. But it is older than the Halloween (the crew behind the last three are behind this one) series or the assorted other sinister stalkers. We can call this a fright franchise since there have been four (some say five) entries and even a short-lived TV series. And it all started exactly fifty years ago as a best-selling novel was adapted into what was then the most profitable horror movie ever (for at least a...

I am, of course, referring to that final, frozen level of hell as pictured in Dante's Inferno. But even calling The Exorcist: Believer colder than the coldest hell might be giving it too much credit, or really, any credit that it does not earn. At first we might think, why does this film even exist? Well, we know why: to make money, to capitalize on a previously existing and beloved film. And perhaps its sequels, but really the first film, which is singular not just as horror but as psychological drama. Luckily we still have Friedkin's masterpiece, because this film, directed by David Gordon Green, co-written by Green, Danny McBride, and Scott Teems, is the opposite in quality. The premise...

The legacy of William Friedkin’s screen adaptation of The Exorcist is a complicated one. Like any long-running horror franchise, the history of its lore is long and maybe a bit confusing. 50 years after the original, we have a sixth film entry (although two of those are duelling prequels built from production turmoil) from director David Gordon Green who works once again on the screenplay with his Halloween reboot buddy Danny McBride (alongside Scott Teems and Peter Sattler). How does a director live up to the memory of a classic? It’s a challenge to which David Gordon Green previously rose with his trilogy of sequels to John Carpenter’s “Halloween,” and now, with Blumhouse‘s “The Exorcist: Believer,” he takes on continuing what many believe to be the greatest horror movie ever made. According to Green, the goal is never to compete with the original but to work in its tradition and move the story into a new era.
“I’ve studied ‘The Exorcist‘ for many years,” Green told IndieWire. “There’s no way that a sequel, reboot, or remake can ever be as profound and shocking as when that subject matter and execution was unleashed on the culture in 1973. But we can continue the story of characters we love and meet them in a contemporary world where the effects of the events in Georgetown 50 years ago...

“The Exorcist: Believer,” the latest chapter in the series that started in 1973 with William Friedkin’s original classic, is nearly here. And ahead of the movie’s release, we are exclusively debuting a featurette devoted to the movie’s thoughtful approach to spirituality. You can watch it above.
“’The Exorcist’ is universal,” Ellen Burstyn says in the featurette. “Possession happens all over the world.” And one of the things that “The Exorcist: Believer” really does is take in influences and religions from different parts of the globe. “I’ve grown up with a fascination of religions of all sorts,” director David Gordon Green says in the clip. “And this was an opportunity to explore possession through a variety of perspectives.” There’s even a master of divinity from Princeton who served as a kind of spiritual advisor to the movie. They really did take it seriously. And it comes across in the movie.

Fifty years ago, writer William Peter Blatty and director William Friedkin changed the face of possession horror with the seminal feature The Exorcist, which inspired sequels and prequels that never quite reached the same box office highs of the original, along with a short-lived TV series. Director David Gordon Green and Blumhouse, fresh off the recent Halloween trilogy, reteam for a new chapter, The Exorcist: Believer, once again eschewing all canon beyond the original film. Introduced as the first in a new trilogy, Believer attempts to comment on religion in a modern world. However, its thinly sketched narrative and reliance on nostalgia works against it.

Any love you had for David Gordon Green’s attempts to reanimate John Carpenter’s game-changing Halloween franchise will probably more or less correspond to your feelings about The Exorcist: Believer, the director’s bid to do the same for William Friedkin’s canonical demonic possession chiller. For those of us former Catholic school kids with vivid recall of being scared witless in our younger years by that 1973 classic, the new film is as deceptive a trickster as the Satanic visitor that takes up residence this time in not just one innocent girl but two.
In theory that should mean double the scare factor, and for most of the first hour all bodes well — or ill, if you dread what’s coming — as Green shows his respect for the original by disregarding its various sequels, prequels and the mostly forgettable 2016 Fox TV series. Universal has stressed that this is a direct sequel,...

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing me that a 2023 legacy sequel to “The Exorcist” might actually make good on its potential. Sure, David Gordon Green’s ultra-disposable trilogy of “Halloween” movies didn’t inspire much hope that he’d fare any better with an even more sacrosanct horror franchise; on the contrary, it suggested the former indie darling was dementedly hell-bent upon destroying every last trace of the promise he once showed. And sure, the head-spinning $400 million distribution deal that possessed Green to resurrect this brand was always going to be a mixed blessing — or a terrible curse — for a mainstream film whose market appeal is predicated on our collective memories of a pre-teen girl penetrating herself with a crucifix while shouting, “Let Jesus fuck you!”

We’ve seen what director David Gordon Green and Blumhouse Productions could do with the Halloween franchise, three times over. Now we’re going to see what they can do with the Exorcist franchise when The Exorcist: Believer reaches theatres this Friday, October 6th. This movie is meant to be the start of a new trilogy of Exorcist sequels, and Universal Pictures and Peacock forked over an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute this trilogy… so they’re probably very glad to hear that the film is tracking to have a franchise record-breaking opening weekend.
Deadline reports that The Exorcist: Believer, which will be playing on 3600 screens, is expected to have a domestic opening weekend in the 30 to 36 million range. Currently, the R-rated reboot/sequel is trending demo-wise like The Nun 2, which saw a $32.6M opening, meaning it’s great with the 18-34 demographic,...

Exactly 50 years ago this fall, the most terrifying horror film in history landed on screens, shocking audiences around the world. Now, on Friday, October 6, a new chapter begins. From Blumhouse and director David Gordon Green, who shattered the status quo with their resurrection of the Halloween franchise, comes The Exorcist: Believer.
The original Exorcist film can be looked at as rite of passage film for fans of the horror genre. In fact, when it was first released, many parents actually forbade their children from going to see the film. Film producer Jason Blum revealed that he was about twelve years old when he first saw the film, while director David Gordon Green tells us, “I was fifteen when I saw it and was watching the film in public library while wearing large headphones. Why you ask? Because my parents wouldn’t let me see it!” Blum adds, “The quickest way...

Universal Pictures is going so hard with their marketing of the October 6th release of director David Gordon Green and Blumhouse Productions‘ The Exorcist: Believer, it almost seems like the saying “another day, another Exorcist promo” would be fitting. The release of Saw X this weekend paves the way for the theatrical arrival of The Exorcist: Believer next weekend, and we’ve got Five brand new clips from the upcoming sequel today.
One of the most notable clips here features the return of Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil, and it reveals that Chris has no idea where her daughter Regan is at this point in the story.
“I wake up every morning wondering where my daughter is. Praying that I’ll see her sweet face again one of these days,” Chris MacNeil explains to new character Victor Fielding.
Speaking of Victor, he’s featured in a couple of the other clips as well, one of which sees him being attacked by his possessed daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett).
In the final clip we meet Katherine (Olivia Marcum), another young girl who is possessed by a demon in The Exorcist: Believer.
