He is 100% Irish, third generation Irish-American. His great grandfather, Patrick O'Donnell, was a boxer of some note while serving in the White Fleet Navy during WWI. Patrick's entire body was covered in tattoos, ending at his wrists, ankles, and neck. "Jab 'n' Jump Back", Kevin's first play, is about Patrick.
Actor Dylan Baker played his father, Kevin O'Donnell Sr. in the film A Case of Deadly Force (1986), based on the book written by his uncle, Lawrence O'Donnell. Actor Richard Crenna played his grandfather.
Played guitar and sang for Boston punk bands Fun in the Kitchen and Pollux. Michael Equi played bass in both bands. Dave Norton, who currently plays drums for the band Victory at Sea, played drums for Pollux.
