Hong Kong cinema expands its borders once more and brings us a new fast paced action/adventure film, starring the one and only Andy Lau and international known French actor Jean Reno. “The Adventurers” is the latest film by Stephen Fung, and it was known for some time to be a emake of the classic John Woo’s flick “Once a Thief”. The plot is, in spirit, very similar, but it is not a remake in its whole, just an action flick with a similar plot that plays in the same league.
“The Adventurers” is about a thief who has just been released from prison. Then, he brings together a team of professionals to make a final big score which will make them millionaires. The job is simple: steal the important jewel “The Rope of Life”, the last of the three pieces that form the invaluable Gaia necklace.

"Who painting do you want me to replicate?" Signature Entertainment in the UK has unveiled an official trailer for a Hong Kong crime thriller titled The Counterfeiter. This has gone under a few other names, including Project Gutenberg, and the original titles Mou seung (Cantonese) and Wu shuang (Mandarin). The Counterfeiter is described "action-packed, twisty and tension filled crime thriller" akin to The Usual Suspects meets Fight Club, starring Chow Yun-Fat as a criminal mastermind known as the "Painter". The Hong Kong police are hunting a masterful counterfeiting gang. In order to crack the leader "Painter's" true identity, the police recruits gang member Lee Man to unmask him. This also stars Aaron Kwok, Jingchu Zhang, Catherine Chau, Joyce Wenjuan Feng, David Yao-Qing Wang, and Kai Chi Liu. This looks cool, lots of slick counterfeiting along with some heavy action. It might be an entertaining weekend watch. Here's the first official...

"The operation is compromised." Well Go USA has debuted an official Us trailer for the Chinese action heist movie called The Adventurers, from director Stephen Fung. The action-packed film is about three of the world's top thieves, played by Andy Lau, Tony Yang, and Shu Qi, who band together to pull off the "heist of a lifetime." But hot on their trailer is a French detective, played Jean Reno of course, who chases them all over Europe. The full cast Jingchu Zhang, Eric Tsang, Tony Yo-ning Yang, David Bowles, and Yi Sha. This definitely looks slick, kind of like a Hollywood action heist movie with some cool set pieces and locations, but I hope it's actually good. Seems like it's going to be super cheesy, a little too much Hollywood. Here's the official Us trailer (+ international poster) for Stephen Fung's The Adventurers, from YouTube: In this slick, high-stakes action-adventure,...

China Lion continues its winning run of bringing hot new releases from mainland China to North American audiences this month with the release of Pan Anzi's Far East Western For A Few Bullets on 22 July. Starring Zhang Jingchu (Aftershock, Protege), Lin Gengxin (The Taking of Tiger Mountain), Liu Xiaoqing and Kenneth Tsang, For A Few Bullets appears to be following the trend of recent blockbusters like Jiang Wen's Let The Bullets Fly, repackaging China's warlord era of the early 20th century with a Wild West vibe that should appeal to audiences beyond the Chinese diaspora. There's definitely a strong comedy element too, and a feisty female protagonist to boot, as well as plenty of classic gunslinging and railroad action thrown in for good measure. ...

'Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation': Tom Cruise. 'Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation': Tom Cruise, the last action hero There are two impossible missions in the latest Mission: Impossible. The first involves Chechen terrorists, political assassinations, the Vienna Opera House, and a car that unlocks when the user places his hand on the driver's side window (Detroit, get on that). The other impossible mission, one that is not only accepted and completed, but conquered and victoriously ground into dust, is proving that 53-year old Tom Cruise is still an action star. As Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation demonstrates with cruel ease, Cruise isn't just an action hero. In the post-movie star age, he is, with apologies to a certain Austrian bodybuilder whose drawing power is all but terminated, the last action hero. What makes him thus is not just his supreme confidence, compact good looks, and million dollar smile. The camera has...

'Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation' star Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt 'Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation' trailer: Movie stunt combo "Desperate times. Desperate measures," says Tom Cruise aka Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation trailer aka the Mission: Impossible 5 and/or MI5 trailer. Whatever you call it, that particular line could be read in a number of ways: Tom Cruise's superstardom is in the doldrums – at least that's what we hear from those who see reality only through U.S.-focused lenses – and he needs all the box-office help he can get. Hence, MI5. Hollywood is in dire need of a mammoth domestic blockbuster following a year of mediocre-performing tentpoles at the U.S. box office. Hence, MI5. The world's socioeconomic fabric is about to unravel. Hence, MI5 – so humankind can go with a bang. Not only with a bang, but with mirth as well.

Thriller inspired by China’s 2008 milk scandal stars Luca Barbareschi and Zhang Jingchu.
Italy’s Rai Trade will launch sales on Italian actor and director Luca Barbareschi’s Hong Kong-set thriller The Mercury Factor (fka Something Good) at the American Film Market (Afm) next week.
The film, which will receive its market premiere, stars Barbareschi as unscrupulous, Hong Kong-based Italian businessman Matteo, who is involved in the trade of adulterated food goods. He has been forced to leave his native Italy due to shady dealings back home.
Chinese actress Zhang Jingchu, seen this summer in mainland China blockbuster Switch, plays a young woman whose only child died as a result of eating contaminated food. She unwittingly falls for Matteo, unaware of his criminal activities.
The storyline is loosely inspired by the Italian bestseller I Trust You – a joint work by journalist Francesco Abate and top crime writer Massimo Carlotto – as well as the 2008 China milk scandal in which...

Hong Kong – Seemingly ripped from the headlines about the tainted food scandals in China since 2008, Italian actor-director-producer Luca Barbareschi's Something Good tackles the worldwide cross-border trafficking of adulterated food, and chooses a Chinese victim for a chance of release in the country. A thriller and love story between a smuggler of adulterated food and a restaurateur whose son was killed by juice tainted with pesticides, starring Barbareschi (Il Trasformista, Ardena) and Chinese actress Zhang Jingchu (Rush Hour 3, Switch), Something Good made its world premiere at the opening of Cine Italiano! program, which was co-

Hong Kong – After several months of nostalgic rom-coms and local dramedies dominating the Chinese box office, local audiences have finally decided to embrace a homegrown action-driven blockbuster – and in overwhelming fashion too. Pang Ho Cheung, arguably most the talented and exciting Hong Kong film maker of the last decade, serves as producer on “Lacuna”, directed by his regular collaborators Derek Tsang and Jimmy Wan, who wrote his superb slasher “Dream Home”. The film sees the duo following up their unexpectedly on the money 2010 romantic ensemble drama “Lover’s Discourse” with more of the same, another very contemporary life and love story of sorts, revolving around the wild antics of a (very) drunken night out in Beijing. For its lead couple the film stars top Hong Kong actor Shawn Yue, who combined with Pang to great effect on the charismatic “Love in a Puff” plus sequel, and Mainland actress Zhang Jingchu, recently seen in the likes of “Flirting Scholar 2” and “City Under Siege”. The film gets off to a disorienting start, with Shen Wei (Shawn Yue) and Tong Xin (Zhang Jingchu) waking up...

As the Cannes film festival is underway, a trailer for Switch (富春山居图) has been release at this event. No official word on the story behind the 20-million budgeted action adventure film yet but from the trailer, I'm assuming leading man Andy Lau plays a special agent akin to James Bond and much like any of the James Bond films, the key ingredients are present: exotic international location, mysterious femme fatale and thrilling stunt sequence. The director is Jay Sun and the other cast member include Zhang Jingchu, Lin Chi-ling and Tong Dawei. You'll find the trailer embedded below....

The filming of the long-awaited Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains has begun. The director, Sun Jianjun is on a mission to top the stunts of Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible 4, which is also set in Dubai. In fact, there are many similarities between both films, the most obvious being that Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains promises to be an action-thriller with lots of flashy boats and cars, amazing stunts, and breathtaking views of Dubai.
Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains is the first offering from the Chinese movie industry to be filmed internationally. Sun Jianjun told reporters that their film will be much better at representing Dubai’s beauty and unique identity, rather than the cliched view of Arab countries which never seem to lack sandstorms, turbans, and camels. This movie will star Andy Lau, Chiling Lin, and Jingchu Zhang and, with a budget of $20 millions Usd, they will have only...

Director: Benny Chan. Review: Adam Wing. There are good films, there are bad films, and then there are films so bad they’re good. I’m not quite sure why I mention this, because make no mistake about it, City Under Siege is a really bad movie. Occasionally, and I’m being really positive on this one, Benny Chan’s latest touches on greatness, but that’s only because the rest of the film is so ill-conceived and hopelessly dire, It’s easy to get caught up in the crassness of it all. Hong Kong director Benny Chan’s (Connected) sci-fi action film pits a naïve circus performer against his dangerous colleagues after being contaminated by a biochemical that gives them superhuman powers. Aaron Kwok leads a superpower cast that also includes Shu Qi, Wu Jing (Spl), Zhang Jing Chu (Aftershock), and Colin Chou (Flash Point). City Under Siege features...

Director: Xiaogang Feng. Review: Adam Wing. Human drama takes precedence over special effects in Xiaogang Feng’s memorial to the 240,000 victims of the Tangshan earthquake. On July 28, 1976, a massive earthquake struck Tangshan, China, devastating the city in just 23 seconds. Feng Xiaogang (The Banquet, Assembly) sure knows his audience, and Aftershock has gone on to become the highest grossing local film in Chinese history, cementing Feng's status as the go-too guy for blockbuster entertainment. Aftershock was the first Chinese film made for the IMAX giant-screen format, enlisting the service of special effects teams from both the Us and Korea. The opening act is quite possibly the most enticing segment of this over-reaching drama, a film that attempts to depict the emotional tale of a family torn apart by disaster. Once the initial CGI downpour is over, Feng’s movie walks on much safer ground, but it’s the fine cast that keeps it from crumbling.

The Golden Horse Awards were held last night. They're often thought of as the Chinese Oscars because the tradition goes back the furthest and honors a wide pool of Chinese language films from multiple countries (China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, etcetera). Though neither Monga, Taiwan's submission for Oscar's Foreign Language Film competition, nor Aftershock (China's submission), were nominated for Best Picture they both had multiple nominations .
Monga, a popular youth crime drama we've mentioned before, won Best Actor for 28 year old Ethan Ruan (left), who amusingly brought a cardboard cutout of his co-star who was not nominated. And yes he brought the cutout with him onstage when he won. He said...

If movies have taught us anything it’s that not enough filmmakers title their work as an homage to the venerable and beloved Police Academy film series. But they’ve also taught us that it’s never a good thing when military types and scientists collaborate. Yes, even Asian ones. City Under Siege opens in an underground bunker during WWII as a group of frightened men are led into an observation room. Also in the room? A mutated and muscle-laden man who proceeds to kill each and every one of them. Cut to the present day and we’re introduced to Sunny (Aaron Kwok), a clown at the local circus who imagines himself as a legendary knife thrower. But Zhang (Collin Chou) and his cronies are the circus’ real stars, and they treat Sunny like a second-class citizen. Which is still better than clowns deserve to be treated. The group goes treasure hunting in the hills and...
