Liev Schreiber urged a crowd of D.C. lawmakers, ambassadors and media figures for continued support for Ukrainians as the one-year anniversary nears of Russia’s attempted invasion.
The occasion was UnSanctioned, an event at the French ambassador’s residence that brought together those who have been sanctioned by Vladimir Putin’s regime to support the humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.
The list, as Ukrainian Ambassador Oksana Markarova noted, is long. The sanctioned guests at the Friday evening event included Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, State Department Spokesman Ned Price, Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-pa), Rep. Rick Larsen (D-wa), Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Co), Rep. Rick Larsen (D-wa), Rep. Susan Wild (D-pa), Susan Glasser, Bianna Golodryga and Craig Kennedy.

Former NBA player Dennis Rodman announced he is going to Russia to help imprisoned WNBA player Brittney Griner — and White House officials are not thrilled.
The basketball player claimed on Saturday, “I got permission to go to Russia to help that girl. I’m trying to go this week.”
Rodman added, “I know Putin too well.” He notably called the Russian President “cool” back in 2014.
Since his basketball days, Rodman has taken an interest in casual international diplomacy. He’s traveled to North Korea many times and even befriended dictator Kim Jong-Un.
State Department spokesperson Ned Price clarified on Monday, “He would not be traveling on behalf of the U.S. government.”
Price added, “We believe that anything other than negotiating further through the established channel is likely to complicate and hinder those release efforts.”
Griner was arrested at a Moscow airport in February for allegedly having vape cartridges with hashish oil in her luggage.

Ukrainian Ambassador Oksana Markarova told a gathering of Washington politicos and media types that the Russian invasion has been a “game changer” in which “the freedom of press and freedom of expression and the freedom of speech suddenly became an existential need.”
She was speaking at a fundraiser on Thursday for Reporters Without Borders, which is raising money for journalists, including Ukrainian journalists and international freelancers, who need such things as security equipment and health assistance as they cover the war in Ukraine.
Markarova said of the journalists covering the war, “Really you are as brave and as heroic as all the Ukrainians as all the Ukrainians who are fighting. It takes a lot of courage and it takes a lot of values and principles to leave your comfortable life here. There are a lot of stories to choose from. But we’re very grateful to everyone who chooses this story,...

"We were able to check on her condition, we will continue to work very closely with her legal team, with her broader network, to see to it that she is treated fairly," Price said, adding that the U.S. government "will continue to do everything we can" to ensure that Griner receives fair treatment amid her detainment. Iran’s government may support Russia’s of Ukraine, but the bulk of the country’s film community is outraged by the war — and some more openly than others.
Prominent Iranian actor Hamid Farokhnezhad, best known internationally for starring in Asghar Farhadi’s “Fireworks,” has posted a video widely circulated on social media in which he denounces “the brutal attack of Russia against Ukraine.”
Farokhnezhad (pictured above), in protest against the Russian invasion, expressed his wish in the video to return the best actor statuette he received from the Moscow Film Festival in 2005 for his role in anti-war drama “Big Drum Under Left Foot,” directed by Kazem Ma’asoumi.
As Iranian multi-hyphenate Babak Karimi, speaking from Tehran, puts it, “Iran has experienced eight years of war with Iraq, which had similarities to the war in Ukraine.”

The most compelling element of Jonathan Capehart’s next MSNBC special may not be the host, but rather a video tableau of White House officials who have publicly identified as being LGBTQ.
“You really see all of these people and just think about how far the community has come, and how far the nation has come,” says the host of MSNBC’s “Sunday Show,” in an interview. “I had to take a step back and realize that this is not usual.”
Capehart typically holds forth on Sunday mornings for the NBCUniversal-owned cable-news outlet, but he will appear on its screen this Sunday evening at 10 p.m. in “Pride of the White House,” his second special at the network. The program takes an hour-long look at what the Biden Administration is doing to advance the rights of the LGBTQ community and features taped interviews with some of its top LGBTQ officials.

Hours after Beijing banned the BBC World Service, Hong Kong’s public broadcaster announced Friday that it will also drop certain BBC programs, sparking concern from foreign governments and journalist organizations.
Beijing’s tit-for-tat move to block the BBC came a week after the U.K. revoked the local license for the Chinese government-backed Cgtn network, citing its insufficient editorial independence.
The former British colony’s public broadcaster Radio Television Hong Kong (Rthk) stated Friday that it too would drop certain BBC radio programs that same day. It had been putting out BBC World Service reports for more than four decades.
Keith Richburg, the head of the University of Hong Kong’s journalism and media studies center, said Rthk’s decision was “surprising” and a “very worrying sign,” given that Hong Kong is “supposedly still autonomous.”

President Donald Trump predictably tweeted “fake news” again Thursday over a volley of stories having to do with what he said to a foreign leader that so alarmed someone in the intelligence community that it compelled them to file a whistleblower complaint.
The story had been percolating for five days, but it wasn’t until Wednesday night that the Washington Post broke the news that the complaint involved Trump’s communications with a foreign leader and included a promise regarded as “so troubling that it prompted an official in the U.S. intelligence community to file a formal whistleblower complaint with the inspector general for the intelligence community.” NBC News’ Ken Dilanian confirmed the story soon after along with other outlets.

Washington — Omarosa Manigault Newman released a recording on Monday of a conversation she had with President Donald Trump taken one day after she was ousted by White House Chief of Staff John Kelly.
In the recording, made last December, Trump appears to be surprised that she is departing. NBC’s “Today” played the recording on Monday, along with an interview with Manigault Newman. She is in the midst of promoting her new book, “Unhinged: An Insider’s Account of the Trump White House.”
“Omarosa, what’s going on? I just saw on the news that you’re thinking about leaving? What happened?” Trump asks her.
“General Kelly – General Kelly came to me and said that you guys wanted me to leave,” Manigault Newman responds.
“No… I, I – Nobody even told me about it,” Trump says.
“Wow,” she replies, to which Trump says, “You know they run a big operation, but I didn’t know it.

To filmmaker Christopher Nolan, the phrase “newly restored” has taken on unfortunate baggage. In the past decade or so, he believes, it has come to mean digital tinkering with classic films, or even “corrections” made on behalf of artists who worked in another time based on mere assumptions about their work.
So when Nolan saw a few reels struck from the original 70mm camera negative of Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 masterwork “2001: A Space Odyssey” — which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year — the gears started turning. What if audiences had access to a genius’s “unrestored” vision in all its analog glory? Furthermore, what if serious efforts were to be put into an increasingly antiquated type of celluloid rehabilitation, one free of the digital realm?
“A lot of the great film-restoration work throughout history was done entirely photochemically, including the mid-1980s release of ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ that Steven Spielberg...

1933 Color Stooges Short Discovered In Australia, Plus Other Amazing Archival Discoveries
At Film Forum, September 29 & 30
“Lost… Now Found,” a program of archival discoveries highlighted by Hello Pop! (1933), a Technicolor musical short starring the Three Stooges that was long thought lost, will screen at Film Forum on Sunday, September 29 at 3:00 and Monday, September 30 at 3:00 and 6:30.
Following an MGM vault fire in 1967, in which its negative and all existing prints were thought to have been destroyed, the two-reel backstage musical Hello, Pop!, starring Ted Healy “and his Stooges” Moe, Larry and Curly, was long considered the sole lost Three Stooges short.
But in December 2012, The Vitaphone Project, a group devoted to restoring early sound vaudeville and music shorts, was contacted by an Australian film collector in possession of a two-strip Technicolor nitrate print rescued from a landfill. The Project’s...

Taking one of Hollywood's most beloved Golden Age classics like "The Wizard of Oz" and converting it to both 3D and IMAX is a heady undertaking, and one that even "Oz" experts weren't sure would work. However, on September 20, the restored "Oz" will open at IMAX theaters around the world, including the newly renamed and restored Tcl Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Blvd, where it debuted on August 15, 1939. The release is timed to the film's 75th anniversary.
At a presentation September 9 at the Chinese Theater, officials from IMAX and Warner Bros., who now own the MGM musical, spoke about the painstaking, 16-month process by which a movie made with 1939 technology was updated for today.
"I was frightened we were taking a national treasure and I wondered, can you do it poetic justice?" said George Feltenstein, who oversees programming, presentation and marketing for the Warner Archive Collection. "I went from being skeptical to being a praiser.

The list, published by The Hollywood Reporter, includes actors, cinematographers, designers, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, "members-at-large," musicians, producers, PR folks, short filmmakers and animators, sound technicians, visual effects artists, and writers.

It's been nearly 75 years since The Wizard of Oz first hit theaters and it remains a classic even by today's standards. In order to celebrate the momentous occasion, Warner Bros. is re-releasing the film in theaters in 3D and IMAX as well as coming out with a special collector's edition blu-ray. Come inside to check out the release date and all the details on the new set.

Los Angeles — It took a stray bit of dirt to scratch the perfection of "Cabaret," and painstaking effort to return it to cinematic glory.
The restored "Cabaret," minus damage that had prevented a high-definition version, earned the opening spot at the four-day TCM Classic Film Festival. Stars Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey were scheduled to attend Thursday's ceremony marking the musical's 40th anniversary.
Minnelli, whose turn as cabaret singer Sally Bowles captured a best actress Academy Award and cemented her young stardom, said making "Cabaret" was a joyful "secret," filmed in Munich and far away from meddling Los Angeles studio bosses.
Director Bob Fosse "got away with murder. We all did," Minnelli said in a recent phone call from New York. She's on a concert tour, "Confessions," based on her album of the same title.
"We'd take chances, and the studio would send notes like, `Too cloudy. It will break...

The Warner Home Video restoration of David Lean's 1965 epic Doctor Zhivago is a thrill to behold in the high-definition Blu-ray format. So much so that watching it, one is apt to forget or at least ignore the problematic aspects of the film. And despite those, there's a real mastery at work here of the sort that's bracing to revisit today. The Blu-ray, and a standard-def DVD edition of the restoration, come out next Tuesday. I was fortunate enough to be able to have a conversation with Warner Home Video's Vice President of remastering, Ned Price, yesterday, not too long after the company announced it was putting a moratorium on two popular classic titles, Citizen Kane and Ben-Hur, in anticipation of remastered versions for standard-def and Blu-ray for some time next year. So we had more than Zhivago to discuss. Highlights of our conversation below.
