James Gandolfini’s The Sopranos is often regarded as among the best TV shows ever made. The show chronicling the life and criminal career of Tony Soprano enthralled fans with its first few seasons. For six seasons, they were stuck to their TV every week waiting for new episodes to air. Gandolfini’s influential career-defining performance as Tony Soprano won him multiple Emmys.
A still from HBO’s The Sopranos
Despite the high reputation of the series, the series finale that featured the infamous cut-to-black sequence at the end divided fans. Additionally, Edie Falco who played Carmela Soprano teased that she and Gandolfini shot a Soprano-themed ad to help lure LeBron James to join the New York Knicks. The long-rumored footage has now made its way online and it is interesting, to say the least.

Several months ago, word leaked out that Maggie Gyllenhaal was set to write and direct a film called The Bride!, a new take on the concept of the 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein (watch it Here). Once thought to be set up at the Netflix streaming service, this one is actually happening at Warner Bros., and the studio has set the film for a theatrical release, IMAX screens included, on October 3, 2025. Feature debutant writer-director Shane Atkinson toys with a hapless cast of schemers and low-lifes in this neo-noir, featuring a scene-stealing Dylan Baker as a vexed hitman
Sadsack husbands, missing suitcases, devious strippers, destabilising conversations with hitmen doubling up as metaphysical emissaries: this hyperactively structured crime thriller lines up many of the usual noir suspects, but loves messing with them. Often scenes end with left-field segues, such as when a cocky Pi suddenly finds his car towed by a couple of insolent cops. It’s not so much that the inhabitants of the Texan outpost of the title are caught in the genre’s meaningless existential whirlpool; rather, they’re being actively toyed with by some mischievous prankster deity (Aka debut director Shane Atkinson).

A darkly comic crime odyssey set in middle-of-nowhere America, writer-director Shane Atkinson’s Laroy, Texas wears its Coen brothers influence on its sleeve. And while it never quite reaches the hilarious heights or existential depths of the Coens’ finest work, it does offer similarly enjoyable mixture of the macabre and the absurd.
Atkinson’s film begins with a regular schmuck named Ray (John Magaro) being summoned to a greasy diner and handed an envelope full of photos that show his wife, Stacy-Lynn (Megan Stevenson), cheating on him. It’s devastating information to receive, and it doesn’t help that Ray is hearing it from a guy like Skip (Steve Zahn)—a self-styled private eye who dresses in a bolo tie and cowboy hat, and swears that he’s as much of a detective as any of the other boys on the force, even if he has spelled the word incorrectly on his business cards.

Deadline reports that The Sopranos creator David Chase is set to reteam with Terence Winter for an untitled horror movie set up at New Line Cinema.
David Chase is expected to direct the movie, which he will also co-write alongside Terence Winter. The plot details are being kept under wraps, but given the Sopranos pedigree, my mind immediately leaps to Cleaver, the fictional movie within the HBO series produced by Christopher Moltisanti. While I doubt that Chase and Winter are going the slasher route, it’s still fun to imagine.

Oppenheimer took the top prize at the 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards on Sunday night.
The film won the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for outstanding producer of theatrical motion pictures, a day after taking top prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Other big winners were Beef, which also won at the SAG Awards and Sunday’s Film Independent Spirit Awards, along with Succession and The Bear, both of which also won SAG Awards on Saturday.
Oppenheimer producer Emma Thomas accepted the theatrical motion picture award, noting that in a room full of producers, “This means so much coming from you, this room is full of people whose work we admire,” adding, “You know how hard the job can be, you also know how great the job can be; it’s the best job on set.” She also called director Christopher Nolan (who is also her husband) “the best producer you can possibly hope for.

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan, with their unique way of filmmaking, established their names in every movie buff’s heart. Their recent films Killers of the Flower Moon and Oppenheimer earned 10 and 13 Oscar nominations respectively and a clear frontrunners to win some. While Martin Scorsese is known for his distinctive visual style and his exploration of themes such as crime, violence, and the human condition, Christopher Nolan is famous for employing non-linear storytelling, cinematography, and scientific subject matter.

On her first feature film try, Celine Song struck gold with the time-hopping romantic drama Past Lives.
A24’s semi-autobiographic pic netted two key nominations at this year’s Oscars, for Best Picture and Song’s Original Screenplay — a huge coup for the tiny feature that debuted at last year’s Sundance Film Festival.
The Oscar noms came off five nominations at the Golden Globes and a Best Feature win at the Gothams. The pic, which Song wrote and directed, tells the story of Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), deeply connected childhood friends who lose contact after Nora’s family emigrates from South Korea. Two decades later, a married Nora is reunited with Hae Sung in New York for one fateful week as they confront notions of destiny, love and the choices that make a life.

If you're looking for a film to watch at home for Valentine's, hang on a day late and catch Celine Song's wonderful debut. Featuring a perfect trio of performances, this is not about the love of simple once-a-year gesture but that which goes the distance. When Nora - then named Na Young - leaves South Korea as a 12-year-old for Canada, she also leaves behind her first crush. Fast-forwarding 12 years, Nora (Greta Lee) is now living in New York and finds a bit of Facebook curiosity leads her to reconnect with Hae Sung (Teo Yoo). This is just the start of Song's elegant drama, which will check in once again with the pair after another dozen years have passed and Nora is now married to Jewish American Arthur. Rather...

UK sales outfit Bankside Films has unveiled a first look image of Mala Emde in the role of Vera Brandes in Ido Fluk’s The Girl From Köln, as well as a slew of key deals on the film as the company heads into the European Film Market (EFM).
The feature, currently in post-production, tells the little-known story of one of the best-selling jazz records of all time, US pianist Keith Jarrett’s 1975 Köln Concert, and how one formidable German teenager, Vera Brandes, was instrumental in its creation. Bankside will be showing a sales promo to buyers at the EFM.

Celine Song is reuniting with A24 for her second feature following her breakout directorial debut “Past Lives,” with an A-list cast in talks to star.
Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans are in talks to lead the romantic comedy “Materialists,” which reteams Song with A24, Killer Films and 2Am. A24 will handle the global release of the film, with a rumored launch at the European Film Market in Berlin.
“Materialists,” which Song revealed would be her follow up to “Past Lives” late last year, is a New York-set rom-com following a high-end matchmaker who gets involved with a wealthy man. The roles Johnson, Pascal and Evans would be playing have not been disclosed.
As with “Past Lives,” producers on the project include Christine Vachon, Pamela Koffler for Killer Films and David Hinojosa of 2Am. It’s believed to start production in May.

Nora and Arthur are both writers, though chosen mediums diverge. She is a playwright who once dreamed of a Pulitzer but would now settle for a Tony; he is a novelist whose books sell well enough to help afford an apartment in the eye-watering real estate of New York City’s Lower East Side. But not a big apartment. Both know what makes a good story, and yet one of the most intriguing aspects of their marriage is that only Arthur sees—or perhaps is the only one who allows himself to see—the literary sweep of their lives.
And how much hackier it could have been in lesser hands.
“What a good story this is,” Arthur remarks midway through Past Lives, drawing attention to the unlikely series of events which compose his and Nora’s experiences, as well as the film we’re watching.

Before making Past Lives, writer-director Celine Song says with a laugh, she didn’t even know how to read a call sheet. Flash forward a year, though, from the A24 romantic drama’s world premiere at Sundance, and she’s landed an Original Screenplay Oscar nom for her debut feature, also seeing it land a slot in the category of Best Picture.
For Song, who was formerly best known for her acclaimed work as a playwright, the recognition means the world. “It’s just so amazing. It’s such a great honor, and on the first movie, I think that’s really the coolest thing,” the filmmaker told Deadline. “It feels so f**king cool and amazing, and I just genuinely am so f**king grateful for every single person…who’s ever come across being a part of this movie, anybody who’s even talked to me about this movie.

Since “Past Lives'” premiere almost a year ago at the Sundance Film Festival and its theatrical release on June 2, the romance film starring Greta Lee, Teo Yoo and John Magaro has continued exceeding expectations. Consistent word-of-mouth, getting regional critics’ awards nominations and wins, and being selected as one of the Top 10 films of the year by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute are all strong indicators for the Oscar lineup in Best Picture. Now it has over-performed with five Golden Globe nominations, including one for Best Film Screenplay for writer/director Celine Song in her debut feature. Will she potentially turn that into a win for that category?

The 2024 Oscars is set for March 10, 2024 in its traditional home, the Dolby Theater. Films released theatrically from January 1 to December 31 of 2023 are eligible for consideration for the 96th annual Academy Awards. Scroll down for our updated 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Picture. (Only movies confirmed for release in 2023 are included; keep checking back as new contenders enter the race.)
Some of the early Oscar hopefuls were launched at Sundance in January and Cannes in May. Four more film festivals — Telluride, Venice, Toronto and New York — will showcase more movies. However, the ongoing writers and actors strikes could reduce the visibility of those contenders. Likewise for those films that forego the festival circuit entirely.
Voting for the 10 shortlisted categories runs from Dec. 14 to 18, with the semi-finalists revealed on Dec. 21. Nominations voting kicks off on Jan. 11, 2024 for six days with the slate of final contenders announced on Jan. 23. Final voting starts on Feb.

Celine Song’s quietly bewitching drama told a complex story of shifting identity and love with beguilingly simple means
• More on the best films of 2023
• More on the best culture of 2023
Slowly and quietly this year, the film Past Lives from Korean-Canadian dramatist and director Celine Song, has been working its discreet magic. Pretty much every new audience member has been turned into a convert, recommending it to a handful more who joined this film’s growing congregation of fans that can hardly describe the spell it has cast over our hearts. This is partly a deeply romantic and sad movie about lost love and missed chances. It’s also a kind of reverie about alternative existences, and what-if life paths. And this is a more urgent question for first- and second-generation immigrant communities in the US. They may well, as they grow into their 30s and 40s, consider the...

When it comes to emotional impact, few films have landed this year with as much power as :a[Past Lives]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/past-lives/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}. Celine Song’s cinematic directorial debut is an astonishing work – its quiet atmosphere leading to an upheaval of raw and real feelings. There’s a reason why it landed where it did on our :a[Best Films Of 2023 list]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/best-movies-2023/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}. It tells the shifting story of Nora (Greta Lee), who, as an adult living in New York, is happily married to Arthur (John Magaro), before unexpectedly reconnecting with long-lost Korean childhood sweetheart Hae Sung (Teo Yoo) – and over its runtime it gradually unspools some of the most tangibly heartfelt moments to have hit the screen in recent memory.

Ambition paired with jealousy can be a dangerous cocktail. Especially when gender expectations are thrown into the mix.
Prestige offerings, from “Fair Play” and “Oppenheimer” to “Past Lives” and “Lessons in Chemistry,” have mined that tricky terrain this year. “Maestro” and the latest seasons of female-led “Julia” and “The Morning Show” have tackled it as well.
And while men suffer the slings and arrows of jealousy in several high-profile Oscar contenders, women arguably experience more fallout from it than their male counterparts. This goes for female characters who are ambitious themselves or those partnered with men who suck all the air out of the room, as in “Oppenheimer” and “Maestro.”

Greta Lee and Andrew Scott’s instant rapport when meeting for the first time makes sense: At the heart of their astonishing, often wordless performances this year is a deeply felt chemistry they each had to create with their co-stars. In “Past Lives,” from writer-director Celine Song, Lee plays Nora, a first-generation Korean American torn between her first love in Korea (Teo Yoo) and her white American husband (John Magaro), with whom she lives in New York. In “All of Us Strangers,” from writer-director Andrew Haigh, Scott plays Adam, whose lonely life in his London flat is pierced by a flirtatious neighbor (Paul Mescal) and mysterious, dreamlike visits with his late parents (Jamie Bell and Claire Foy).

Any year in which an unlikely summer double bill became a global moviegoing event — with one film soaring toward $1.5 billion in worldwide grosses and the other closing in on $1 billion — can’t be considered bad news for Hollywood. But the Barbenheimer phenomenon aside, bad news plagued the film industry for much of 2023.
The strikes of the writers and actors guilds shut down production for five long months, causing major titles like Dune 2 to push back to 2024, leaving fall festival red carpets sparsely populated and disrupting a release pipeline in ways that are sure to have a ripple effect for the next year or two.
Theatrical grosses remained inconsistent, struggling to regain pre-pandemic momentum for most genres except horror (all hail, new scream queen M3GAN; a big hand for Talk to Me), and even the once-reliable cash cow of the superhero blockbuster sputtered more often than not.

35. The Cast of How to Blow Up a Pipeline
The hallmark of a great ensemble is one where each player feels precisely in-tune with the tone and goal of the film, willing to shine in their moment while sharing the spotlight. Perhaps the most even-handed, harmonious example this year is with Daniel Goldhaber’s nail-biting eco-thriller How to Blow Up a Pipeline. Featuring Ariela Barer (also co-writer), Kristine Froseth, Lukas Gage, Forrest Goodluck, Sasha Lane, Jayme Lawson, Marcus Scribner, Jake Weary, and Irene Bedard, it’s a feat of perfect casting, each performance feeling lived-in and an essential piece to the heist puzzle. – Jordan R....

“Any kind of a first encounter with something is out to make an impact,” reflects Celine Song about the power of first love. The subject lies at the heart of the writer-director’s first feature film, “Past Lives,” in which two people from Korea who had once formed a close relationship when they were 12 reunite in person in New York City after 24 years apart. The screenwriter believes the feelings between characters Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo) are especially strong, even after over two decades, because Nora “effectively disappeared” when she immigrated with her family to the United States and “in that way, it’s almost as though she’s passed.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Song has a background in playwriting, but when she had the idea for “Past Lives,” she “knew that it needed to be told cinematically because of the way that time and space works in the film.

The State of the Race
It has long been perceived that the Best Supporting Actor race this season has four locks for a nomination, but as the first round of film awards winners have been announced, the last name to join veterans Robert De Niro (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”), and Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”) may just have a fighting chance of winning the Oscar.
