It’s checkmate on the first of three 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards shows, and Saturday was a huge evening for “The Queen’s Gambit.” The excellent Netflix limited series led by Anya Taylor-Joy has already won seven 2021 Emmys, technically (and in mostly technical categories).
(By the way, if you think three is a lot of shows to celebrate the television industry’s mostly below-the-line workers, 2020 had Five Creative Arts Emmys shows.)
Sunday’s first show began at 1 p.m. Pt. The second Sunday show, the final one of the two-day 2021 Creative Arts Emmys, begins at 5 p.m. Pt. That’s the presentation that has most of the mainstream categories that don’t fit in next week’s Primetime Emmys.
None of the three Creative Arts Emmys shows are being televised live. Next Saturday, a highlights show of sorts will air on Fxx starting at 8 p.m. Et/Pt.

As expected, James Mangold’s ’60s racing epic “Ford v Ferrari,” animated feature “Toy Story 4,” and documentary “Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound” took top honors at the 56th Cinema Audio Society Awards recognizing outstanding sound mixing.
As an Oscar bellwether, though, six of the past 10 Cas winners have gone on to win the sound mixing Oscar, which bodes well for “Ford v Ferrari.” However, Oscar-nominated “1917,” Sam Mendes’ continuous-shot, World War I extravaganza, was not in contention at the Cas Awards, which makes the race very competitive.
“We threw out the production sound,” said Dave Giammarco, the “Ford v Ferrari” re-recording mixer. “But when we got the real GT40, it helped inform the cut because it has its own signature [sound], and you want to wind it out and feel the whole length of it. Sometimes they would cut the shot to match the engine whine. And sometimes you...

Disney’s Ford v Ferrari was the big winner tonight as the Cinema Audio Society handed out its 56th annual Cas Awards for outstanding achievement in sound mixing in Los Angeles. See the full winners list below.
Last year’s top Cas Award winner, Bohemian Rhapsody, went on the score the Best Achievement in Sound Editing Oscar for John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone. Ford v Ferrari will chase that checkered flag in two weeks against Ad Astra, Joker, 1917 and Once Up[on a Time in Hollywood.
Disney/Pixar’s billion-dollar sequel Toy Story 4 sporked away with the animated prize, and Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound unsurprisingly won the documentary award.

It was a clear victory for sci-fi sound editing Sunday night at the 65th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards at the Westin Bonaventure. “War for the Planet of the Apes” was the surprise winner for Dialogue/Adr, splitting honors with “Blade Runner 2049,” which grabbed the Effects/Foley prize. The big loser was “Dunkirk” (which won the BAFTA sound award earlier Sunday). However, Christopher Nolan’s World War II survival epic took home the Music Score award and remains the sound editing Oscar favorite.
In addition, “The Greatest Showman,” “Coco,” “Loveless,” and “Jane” earned sound editing awards for Musical, Animation, Foreign Language, and Documentary. The big TV winner was “Game of Thrones” (“The Spoils of War”) for Dialogue/Adr and Effects/Foley. As expected, “La La Land” came away with the live-action sound mixing award at Saturday’s 53rd Cinema Audio Society (Cas) Awards. Damien Chazelle’s valentine to Hollywood musicals is now a sure bet to win the Best Sound Mixing Oscar. (Sound Editing is still a race.)
Meanwhile, Pixar’s “Finding Dory” upset Disney’s “Zootopia” for animated feature honors. And HBO’S “The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble” earned the first-ever Cas documentary award.
TV winners included “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” (movie or miniseries), “Game of Thrones,” which grabbed its fourth consecutive award for “Battle of the Bastards” (one-hour), “Modern Family: The Storm” (1/2-hour), and “Grease Live!” (specials),
Oscar-nominated sound engineer John Pritchett (“Road to Perdition,” “Memories of a Geisha”) received the Career Achievement Award and Jon Favreau won the Filmmaker Award for “The Jungle Book’s” innovative sound.

Capping off a busy night for awards in the run-up to the 87th annual Oscars, the Cinema Audio Society (Cas) awarded the sound mixing team of "Birdman" top honors Saturday night. "Sherlock," "Game of Thrones" and "Modern Family" won in the TV categories. Clint Eastwood's war film "American Sniper" is considered the favorite to win the comparable Best Sound Mixing Oscar, though "Birdman" was nominated by the Academy's sound branch as well and, indeed, could be formidable if it is the industry favorite the guild awards have suggested it is so far. "Whiplash," also Oscar-nominated, won the BAFTA prize. "Interstellar" and "Unbroken" are also up for the Academy Award, each of them nominated by Cas as well. Six of the last eight Cas winners have won the sound mixing Oscar. Check out the full list of Cas winners below, nominees here and the rest of the season's offerings at The Circuit.

Complaints about the sound mix on Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” clearly didn’t have much influence on the members of the Cinema Audio Society, who on Tuesday made the film one of the five nominees for the best feature-film sound mix of 2014.

Nominations have been announced for the 51st annual Cinema Audio Society Awards, and as ever with this group lately, there are a few surprises. For instance, "Unbroken" made the cut despite being mostly ignored by the guilds and industry groups so far, and Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" showed up as well. The biggest jaw-dropper might just be that after months of being the poster child for sound complaints, somehow, some way, "Interstellar" ended up in the mix (no pun intended). There are always one or two that drop out, however. Last year, for example, another Marvel movie — "Iron Man 3" — was chalked up here. But it fell out in favor of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" with the Academy. I find myself wondering if "The Battle of the Five Armies" could make the cut this year as it's even more of an action/sound film than the last.

First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar).
