Jennifer Grey at an event for Real Steel (2011)
How Well Do You Know 'Dirty Dancing'?
Jennifer Grey at an event for Real Steel (2011)
It was 30 years ago, on Aug. 21, that Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze first twirled into theaters in Dirty Dancing, a spicy summer romance.

Though three decades have passed, fans still remember the famous lift and Swayze’s character insisting that “nobody puts Baby in a corner.”

The young lovers meet at Kellerman’s, an upscale summer resort where Johnny Castle (Swayze) works as a dance instructor and Baby Houseman (Grey) is visiting with her family. Baby ends up at a party for the staff and Johnny catches her eye. As she swoons over him during the hot summer days, he...

Dirty Dancing Turns 30: Writer Talks Johnny & Baby's Future, a Possible Sequel & Why Patrick Swayze Was Her First & Only Choice
Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing (1987)
There aren't many movie references that people from multiple generations are quick to get. But if you say, "Nobody puts baby in a corner" to anyone in the 18 to 80 range, there's a good chance you'll be met with a knowing smirk. That's probably because while Dirty Dancing puts Johnny Castle and Baby Houseman's timeless romance front and center, it also has political undertones and societal themes that resonate with every era.  It was 30 years ago today that Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey's sleeper hit opened in theaters. Writer Eleanor Bergstein, who based the movie in part on her own experience as a teenage Mambo queen, knew that Swayze and Grey brought something special to their roles...

Dirty Thirty: 7 Facts to Celebrate 30 Years of Dirty Dancing
Dirty Thirty: 7 Facts to Celebrate 30 Years of Dirty DancingDirty Thirty: 7 Facts to Celebrate 30 Years of Dirty DancingKurt Anthony8/17/2017 10:29:00 Am

It’s time to lace up your dancing shoes, find yourself a bungalow bunny, and start practicing the pachanga, because today is the 30th anniversary of Dirty Dancing!

Leaping onto the silver screen, Dirty Dancing made its theatrical debut on August 21, 1987 and instantly won over the hearts – and feet – of teen and adult audiences alike. Directed by Emile Ardolino (Sister Act) and featuring the rhythmic chemistry of Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, the romantic dance drama went on to earn over $213M worldwide, along with being the first film to sell more than a million copies on VHS.

With a multi-platinum soundtrack, the Oscar, Golden Globe, and Grammy Award for Best Original Song (“(I’ve Had the Time of My Life”), and choreography by former Gene Kelly student, Kenny Ortega (High School Musical,...

So You Think You Can Dance Recap: Which Top 10 Couple Was Booted First?
Jenna Elfman
Here’s a sentence you would only hear while watching So You Think You Can Dance: “You guys are playing aliens that have been transported into human bodies.”

Yep, it’s safe to say that things got weird on the second live broadcast of Season 14 — and not just because of the extraterrestrials. In the course of two hours, the Top 10 couples took the stage once more to dance for America’s votes, resulting in more than one out-of-this-world routine (and a few that missed the mark).

All of it led up to the season’s first live elimination, which...

Review: ABC's Dirty Dancing Remake: The Good, The Bad, and The Johnny
The original Dirty Dancing is a favorite movie to women of all ages. The magic of the film was created by the music, the spark between Jennifer Grey and the late Patrick Swayze, and of course, the dancing. It was a movie we watched when we were young, fantasizing about growing up and falling in love, and we watch it now that we're grown and remember our first loves and those magic summers of our youth.

Remaking a movie so iconic is a big risk, so I watched this ABC remake with a grain of salt. I knew it wouldn't be the Dirty Dancing of my youth, but I wanted to see what it had to offer. Here's the lowdown.

The cast: Abigail Breslin (Signs, Little Miss Sunshine, Zombieland) as Baby Houseman was a perfect fit. She's cute and youthful. She played the naive and inexperienced, yet intelligent Baby really well.

Dirty Dancing: 10 Most Wtf Moments from ABC's TV Remake
The original 1987 Dirty Dancing is a movie that worked against all odds. Eighties sensibility (and hairstyles and theme song) shoehorned into a Sixties nostalgia piece, a miniscule budget, a cast of unknowns, and a troubled production – not to mention a heroine named … Baby. And yet it positively crackled, thanks to Eleanor Bergstein's deeply personal script, crazy chemistry between leads Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, and the ethereal gyrations of the late, great Swayze.

So how do you re-create that magic? The short answer is: You don't. The long, much...

Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing (1987)
ABC's Dirty Dancing remake aired Wednesday, and fans had a lot to say about the dubious redux -- and not a lot of it was super positive. However, that didn't stop the wave of feedback from being super funny.

The musical, which is a remake of the beloved 1987 romantic drama, starred Colt Prattes as Johnny Castle -- a role originated by Patrick Swayze -- and Abigail Breslin as Frances "Baby" Houseman -- first portrayed by Jennifer Grey.

ABC's Dirty Dancing Remake: 8 Major Changes From the Original Movie
Abigail Breslin and Colt Prattes in Dirty Dancing (2017)
Welcome back to Kellerman's, where there's been some light renovations since your last visit. ABC's Dirty Dancing remake premiered on Wednesday night, bringing the summer romance between Johnny Castle (Colt Prattes) and Baby (Abigail Breslin) from the big screen in 1987 to the small screen in 2017. Still set in the summer of 1963, Breslin had said the new movie "for the most part it really does stay true to the original," and it really did. Baby still carried a watermelon. She still left that corner. They still did the lift.  However, there were some pretty significant changes, including vocal performances, and finding out if Johnny and Baby's romance ever continued beyond the end of that...

Why ‘Dirty Dancing’ Star Colt Prattes Was ‘Terrified’ to Deliver Patrick Swayze’s Classic Line
People Ones To Watch Red Carpet
There’s no question that Colt Prattes had the time of his life shooting “Dirty Dancing,” ABC’s musical remake of the Oscar-winning 1987 film. Prattes — a relative unknown whose biggest previous credit was the music video for Pink’s “Try” — plays Johnny Castle, the role originally played by the late Patrick Swayze. The new version airs Wednesday and also stars Abigail Breslin as Baby (Jennifer Grey’s character), with Sarah Hyland, Debra Messing, Katey Sagal, Nicole Scherzinger, Bruce Greenwood and Billy Dee Williams rounding out the cast. “You can’t do it better,” Prattes tells TheWrap of the original film.

Colt Prattes Reveals Why He Was ‘Terrified’ Taking on Patrick Swayze’s Beloved Role in the Dirty Dancing Remake
Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing (1987)
When it comes to Dirty Dancing, most people immediately think of the late Patrick Swayze. But Colt Prattes thinks of his stepmother.

The Georgia native — who is playing Swayze’s iconic role of Johnny Castle in ABC’s remake of Dirty Dancing — grew up watching the hit 1987 movie almost every weekend that he visited his father’s house, where the TV was often tuned to an airing of it.

“She always had it on in the background, and we used to sit there and watch it,” Prattes, 31, told People of his stepmom, who has since passed away. “She loved it so much.

Review: 'Dirty Dancing' Remake Is Less About Dancing, More About Singing -- Let's Break It Down!
Nobody should make a Dirty Dancing reboot…

But if you're going to, do it right.

Before you read any further, know that I really did try to give ABC's musical adaptation a chance, I did. There have been plenty of remakes of classical hits over the past few years -- some which were not so great, but others, like Grease: Live, that were wonderfully done and satisfied almost all of the viewers who tuned in. Of course, whenever you hear the news that one of your favorite movies of All Time is going to be remade, there's that moment of excitement -- "Yes! I am pumped for this!" -- followed by fear -- "Wait, what if this goes terribly wrong?"

Vestron Pictures

So after hearing who would take on the beloved roles of Patrick Swayze's Johnny Castle (newcomer Colt Prattes) and Jennifer Grey's Baby Houseman (Little Miss Sunshine herself, Abigail Breslin), I told...

Prepare to fall in love with a new Johnny Castle. And Prattes said he went on the same diet regime Matthew McConaughey did for The Dallas Buyer's Club, the 2012 film that he dropped 38 pounds for in order play a man diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, a role that won him...

Remaking ‘Dirty Dancing’: How the TV Movie Turned into Summer Camp for the Cast
It’s the perfect summer day in western North Carolina -- sunny, breezy and warm with blues skies reflecting against the lake and stretching for miles over rolling green meadows -- and entering the grounds of the country club, a giant “Kellerman’s Lodge” sign greets you from the golf course. Couples in starched, pastel outfits sit in rocking chairs on the porch waiting on cues from the director, while a dance coach run moves on the practice log that hovers twelve inches above the ground. The set of ABC’s highly anticipated Dirty Dancing musical reimagining -- starring Little Miss Sunshine’s Abigail Breslin as Baby and Colt Prattes as Johnny Castle -- is the fancy summer camp experience of your dreams and the cast has bonded tightly just like kids at the end of the season.

It’s understandable how close they’ve come -- besides being stuck in a remote mountain paradise for weeks...

‘Dirty Dancing’: How the New TV Remake Compares to the 1987 Original Film
If you grew up obsessed with the tale of Baby and Johnny falling in love in the Catskills, brace yourself: ABC’s upcoming “Dirty Dancing” remake is… well, different.

The original film, released in 1987, blended a classic coming-of-age story with a dance-drenched romance, as good girl Baby (Jennifer Grey) finds herself defying her family after meeting dance instructor Johnny (Patrick Swayze). Set in the ’60s, it’s been an iconic favorite for 30 years, so of course it’s natural to be curious (and maybe even a little skeptical) of ABC’s remake, which premieres May 24.

In the 1987 film Dirty Dancing, the entire plot led up to a climactic dance scene in which Frances “Baby” Houseman (played by Jennifer Grey) is lifted over the head of Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze).

Audiences swooned – and Swayze was propelled onto the A-List.

In a featurette on the 30th anniversary Blu-Ray of the film, those involved with the iconic dance sequence share how difficult the scene was to pull off. Better yet, they share behind-the-scenes footage of the rehearsals. (Watch the exclusive clip above!)

Nostalgia is a powerful thing, and when you’re nostalgic about a film that celebrates nostalgia you know you’re a) overly sentimental and b) getting old. Yes, we’re at that stage now when those classic movies we loved growing up in the 1980s are getting anniversary editions and this year sees, amongst others, Dirty Dancing getting dusted down and re-packaged in a special 30th anniversary collector’s edition Blu-ray.

It is very doubtful that anybody reading this will need a plot rundown but just in case you’re totally oblivious to the charms of romantic musicals it goes like this:...

'Dirty Dancing' Turns 30! 9 Things You Didn't Know About the Iconic Film
Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing (1987)
In August, Dirty Dancing will celebrate 30 years since it first captivated audiences with its timeless tale, and Et is digging up some facts about the film that even hardcore fans might not know.

Watch: Abigail Breslin Is 'Stoked' About 'Dirty Dancing' Remake, Hopes to Do It Justice

1. Numerous pairings were considered to play the leads. Today, it's hard to imagine anyone besides Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in the starring roles, but surprisingly, they weren't the first choice. The role of Johnny Castle was originally supposed to go to Val Kilmer, but he turned it down. Meanwhile, Grey could have lost the role of Baby Houseman to Sarah Jessica Parker or Sharon Stone, who both reportedly tried out for the part.

2. Some scenes in the movie were made up on the spot. "Tons of things were improvised," the late Swayze said in a featurette for the movie. "When I'm teaching Jennifer and I'm getting frustrated, trying to get...

Jennifer Grey Reveals the Actors She’d Cast as Baby and Johnny in a Dirty Dancing Remake
If there were to be a Dirty Dancing film remake, Jennifer Grey already has two actors in mind to play the roles of Frances “Baby” Houseman and Johnny Castle.

During an interview with JustJenny radio host Jenny Hutt, Grey, who played Baby in the 1987 dramedy, listed two potential A-listers she’d suggest for the leading roles.

“I think Natalie Portman and Ryan Gosling,” Grey, 56, revealed. “Wouldn’t you like to see them? Or Channing Tatum?”

“I don’t know if she’s young enough to play that virgin thing, but she’s so gorgeous,” Grey complimented the 35-year-old mother of one.

Secret Cinema: Dirty Dancing review – the UK's biggest hen party
Re-enactments of the film’s big scenes enable a hyped-up, hula-hooping crowd in a sing-along with the atmosphere of a drunken sleepover

“When I say Dance, you say Ing, dancING, dancING!” honks a pigtailed rep through a megaphone, wearing boxfresh Keds, a burgundy Kellerman’s T-shirt and apostrophes for eyes, at the entrance to a familiar looking time warp. “The talent contest will be at 6.45pm!” The crowd, dressed head to toe in 1963, cheerfully whoop and expectantly scan the commotion of fancy dress and forced fun. This is Secret Cinema, after all, where the first rule isn’t don’t talk about Secret Cinema; it’s get involved or go home.

For summer, the blockbustering site-specific behemoth has recreated randy coming-of-age classic Dirty Dancing. As usual, at a secret London location, there are interactive re-enactments and festivalesque frippery foreshadowing the film itself, elevating it from “outdoor screening in a field...

Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing (1987)
The cast of ABC's Dirty Dancing, a three-hour TV remake, is starting to come together, now that Abigail Breslin and Colt Prattes have been set as the two leads. Deadline reports today that Katey Sagal has signed on to join the cast, with production set to begin this week in North Carolina. The actress is playing Vivian Pressman, a role originally portrayed by Miranda Garrison in the 1987 hit movie.

Vivian Pressman is described as a "bungalow bunny," a former beauty queen who spends her free time trying to seduce the younger male workers at the Kellerman resort, such as Colt Prattes' Johnny Castle. Vivian is also said to be "fabulously wealthy" and recently divorced, who takes matters into her own hands when Johnny leaves her for Baby (Abigail Breslin). Vivian also introduces Marjorie Houseman, Baby's mother, played by Debra Messing, to the resort, and Vivian's single lifestyle causes her...

'Dirty Dancing' TV Remake Gets Dancer Colt Prattes in Patrick Swayze Role
Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing (1987)
With Abigail Breslin already locked in to play Baby, ABC's Dirty Dancing has finally found its Johnny Castle. The Wrap reports that actor/dancer Colt Prattes has landed the iconic role in the Dirty Dancing TV special. The site also reports that Debra Messing has come aboard to portray Marjorie Housman, Baby's mother.

ABC's Dirty Dancing is said to be a three-hour musical special, but it won't be airing live like popular specials such as NBC's The Wiz Live! and Fox's Grease: Live. Instead, it will be filmed prior to broadcast, much like Fox's upcoming The Rocky Horror Picture Show Event. Our report from last month revealed that ABC will likely give this special the green light once Johnny Castle was cast, so we may get an official announcement soon, now that Colt Prattes has come aboard.

The original movie was set in the 1960s in a Catskill Mountain resort,...

ABC remaking Dirty Dancing with Abigail Breslin
Deadline is reporting that ABC has given the go ahead to a three-hour TV remake of the hit 1987 movie Dirty Dancing, with Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine, Scream Queens) taking on the role of Baby, played by Jennifer Grey in the original film.

The site reports that the production will not be a live musical like the upcoming Grease Live, but will instead be similar to the upcoming remake of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. As with the movie, it will centre on Baby, “an innocent young woman in the early 1960’s who vacations with her affluent parents and siblings in the Catskill Mountains and falls for the resort’s working-class dance instructor.”

The Dirty Dancing remake is said to be nearing a formal green light, dependent on the casting of Johnny Castle, who was originally portrayed by Patrick Swayze.

3-Hour TV Remake Of 'Dirty Dancing' Starring Abigail Breslin On The Way
You either understand the magic of "Dirty Dancing," or you don't, and if you're in the latter category, then this news probably won't mean much to you. But for those who fully understand the intense sturm und drang between Baby Houseman and Johnny Castle as displayed in the 1987 movie picture, then this news will seem like a cruel joke. While a feature film remake had been pending at one point, instead ABC is going to make a 3-hour TV movie version of the dance romance classic. Abigail Breslin will fill the emotional dancing shoes of Jennifer Grey, but there's no word yet on who will attempt Patrick Swayze's nonchalant hunkiness or dare to fill the role of the irreplaceable Jerry Orbach. And the plot will be exactly the same, about the cultural and social clash that happens at a resort in the Catskills when a woman from an affluent...

'Dirty Dancing' TV Remake Happening with Abigail Breslin as Baby
Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing (1987)
The 1987 classic Dirty Dancing will be heading to the small screen through a new partnership with ABC and Lionsgate TV, with a new three-hour musical adaptation starring Abigail Breslin as Baby. Deadline reports that the project is expected to get an official green light from ABC after one more role is cast, most likely the Johnny Castle role, originally played by Patrick Swayze. It isn't known if the production is close to casting their Johnny Castle yet.

Unlike NBC's The Wiz Live!, which aired last week, and Fox's upcoming Grease: Live, ABC isn't planning a live rendition of Dirty Dancing. This musical adaptation will be taped prior to the broadcast, much like Fox's upcoming The Rocky Horror Picture Show Event, which is slated to debut sometime next year. Since ABC hasn't officially given a green light yet, it isn't known when production will begin at this time.

Wtf: Three Hour Dirty Dancing Remake Starring Abigail Breslin Coming To ABC
Looks like somebody forgot to put Baby in a corner, because she's coming back to have the time of her life once again. The Wrap reports that ABC is going to broadcast a three hour remake of Dirty Dancing with Abigail Breslin in the role of Baby, the character originated by Jennifer Grey in the 1987 film.

Jessica Sharzer wrote the script for the remake, Wayne Blair (The Sapphires) will direct. Eleanor Bergstein, who wrote the first movie, will executive produce alongside Allison Shearmur, while the music will be from Adam Anders and Peer Astrom. The original movie centered on the young Francis "Baby" Houseman falling in love with her summer camp's sexy dance instructor. A sequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, was released in 2004, but apparently was itself a loose remake of the original, just set in a different location.

Breslin memorably danced her way across a stage in 2006's Little Miss Sunshine,...

Abigail Breslin at an event for New Year's Eve (2011)
Beloved '80s flick "Dirty Dancing" is about to get a TV movie musical update, starring an Oscar nominee.

Multiple outlets are reporting that Abigail Breslin ("Little Miss Sunshine," "Scream Queens") has been tapped to play the female lead in ABC's version of what's being dubbed "a reimagining" of the 1987 film, which starred Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze.

"Dirty Dancing" featured the sheltered Frances "Baby" Houseman (Grey) meeting bad boy dance instructor Johnny Castle (Swayze) at a resort in the Catskills in the 1960s. The unlikely duo fall hard for each other while Baby learns some killer dance moves -- and also learns how to stand up to her strict parents.

According to Variety, ABC has been working on adapting the film "for quite some time," and began casting a year ago, searching for the perfect leads. Swayze's part has yet to be filled, though Variety notes that "there is...
