The Joker and Harley Quinn are set to serenade audiences in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” but if, and how many original songs will be included in the film, is a mystery.
Insiders privy to filming and early versions of Todd Phillips’ eagerly awaited sequel to “Joker” tell Variety the movie leans heavily towards being “mostly a jukebox musical,” as it integrates at least 15 reinterpretations of “very well-known” songs. One is said to be “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 musical “The Band Wagon,” famously associated with Judy Garland. However, there is a door open for an original song (or two) to be added to the final version. Details regarding who would pen the tracks, or sing the numbers are unknown. We do know, according to sources, Hildur Guðnadóttir, the Oscar-winning composer of the first “Joker” film, is said to “infuse her distinctive, haunting [music] cues” into each number. Warner Bros declined to comment.

Ryan Gosling’s charming presence was one of the eagerly awaited moments of yesterday’s Oscars night. The Hollywood heartthrob took to the stage to perform I’m Just Ken — one of the nominated Barbie song by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.
Billie Eilish’s What Was I Made For? was another one. Decked out in a sparkly pink suit, a cowboy hat, and pink gloves, Gosling kicked off his performance by serenading his Barbie co-star Margot Robbie.

Robbie couldn’t help but laugh at the playful gesture. Later, the 43-year-old actor took the stage with a group of Ken dancers, including Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, and Scott Evans — all suited up in black.

Though she had a ticket to sit in the audience at the Oscars, choreographer Mandy Moore, who helmed Sunday’s show-stealing “I’m Just Ken” number, couldn’t help but stand in the wings and give all the Kens a pep talk before they headed onstage.
“It was so hype,” Moore said of the energy backstage.
The performance saw Barbie movie star and Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling, in a bright pink bedazzled suit and cowboy hat, lead an army of 62 Kens, as well as his fellow Barbie movie Kens — Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir and Scott Evans — in an all-out dance number that paid homage to Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, included “street-style dancing,” filled the stage with Barbie cardboard cut-outs and ended in a Rockettes-style kickline.

Greta Gerwig tells me there’s “no resistance” from her about the possibility of Barbie 2.
The challenge for her she says, is how to tackle a follow-up movie. Initially, the filmmaker wasn’t “feeling” the idea of a sequel, but now she’s warm to such a situation. “I’m not dismissing it, I want to do it,” she says, but there’s a heck of a lot to discuss first with Mattel, Margot Robbie, Warner Bros Discovery, producer David Heyman and all of her creative collaborators.

Also, there’s rather a lot on her plate as she puts the architecture in place to shoot Narnia for Netflix, and Gerwig revealed that she’ll return to London to soon resume the very early stages of pre-production in the UK.

George previously shared how special the nomination was with The Hollywood Reporter. “With Lily, it’s not surprising to me that she’s been nominated. She’s great. With us, if you really wanted to look at it, our music is probably thousands of years old. For it to be recognized maybe for the first time ever, it’s overwhelming in that sense,” the drummer, singer and composer said.

Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell made Oscar history by becoming the two youngest two-time winners in Academy Awards history, as they picked up the best song trophy for a second time Sunday night for “What Was I Made For?,” their contribution to the “Barbie” soundtrack.
The pop-star siblings previously won for “No Time to Die,” the title song for the 2022 James Bond film. At 22, Eilish has now become the youngest two-time winner in Oscar history; at 26, O’Connell is believed to be the second youngest dual winner.
Eilish’s acceptance speech was punctuated with nervous laughter, as she thanked director Greta Gerwig. “I’m so grateful for this song and for this movie and the way it made me feel,” she said. “This goes out to everyone who was affected by this movie.” She thanked her school dance and choir teachers. She also thanked her “best friend Zoe for playing Barbies with me growing up.

Despite two historic strikes, shifting release schedules, and the ongoing risk of coronavirus, Hollywood had a lot to celebrate at tonight’s 96th Academy Awards. If there was a message to take away from this year’s awards season, it’s that 2023 was a very good year for movies.

For weeks after the Oscar nominations were announced, “Barbie” star Ryan Gosling publicly maintained he wasn’t sure if he’d perform “I’m Just Ken” during the 96th Academy Awards.
However, “Barbie” co-star and producer Margot Robbie says he never hesitated to agree to the performance. In fact, she says she didn’t have to pressure him “at all.”
“He jumped at this,” Robbie told me at the Chanel and Charles Finch party Saturday night at the Beverly Hills Hotel. “He’s going to crush it. I’m so excited. I think he’s going to be the highlight of the whole night. I think a lot of people are going to be tuning in for this specific performance.”
In his Variety cover story in early February, Gosling insisted that the Academy hadn’t yet asked him to perform. “It might be too much of a risk to have me do it,...

Another awards season comes to an end, as the 2024 Oscars named Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer as Best Picture, beating out contenders like Killers of the Flower Moon, Barbie, and Poor Things. Nolan also won for directing, while Cillian Murphy beat out The Holdovers‘s Paul Giamatti for Lead Actor and Robert Downey Jr. received the win for Supporting Actor.
But Poor Things didn’t fare too badly, taking home four awards including a surprise win for Emma Stone, who was widely considered the underdog given Lily Gladstone’s heavily favored performance in Flower Moon. American Fiction also took home a well-deserved adapted screenplay nomination, while Anatomy of a Fall won for original screenplay.
Barbie didn’t go completely win-less, as Billie Eilish and Finneas won their second Oscar for “What Was I Made For?” (just after a jaw-dropping rendition of “I’m Just Ken” by Ryan Gosling and a whole...

Mark Ronson, the DJ and record producer, revealed that his nominated song ‘I’m Just Ken’ for Best Original Song at the Oscars almost didn’t make it to the final version of the film’s soundtrack. Ronson disclosed to The Times of London that when he and co-writer Andrew Wyatt initially created ‘I’m Just Ken’, studio executives were hesitant about its inclusion in the movie. He recounted how at the first screening, the song didn’t resonate as intended, leading to panic.
However, director Greta Gerwig fought for its inclusion, expressing her unwavering belief in its importance to the film. Ronson emphasized Gerwig’s determination, stating that she asserted she needed the song “with every inch of my body,” ultimately leading to its inclusion after a significant effort.
Describing the influences behind the track, Ronson noted its inspiration from the 1970s era, akin to the style of Elton John and Bernie Taupin.

Mark Ronson, whose song ‘I’m Just Ken’ is nominated for Best Original Song at this evening’s Oscars after Ryan Gosling sang the plaintive ballad in the pink blockbuster Barbie, has revealed the mega-hit nearly didn’t make it to the final version of the movie soundtrack.
Ronson previously collected an Oscar in 2019 for his part in the song Shallow, sung by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in A Star Is Born, and has a clutch of Grammy Awards for his work with Amy Winehouse and others.
However, he told The Times of London that when he first penned ‘I’m Just Ken’ with co-writer Andrew Wyatt, studio bosses weren’t convinced it had a place in the movie.
Ronson remembered:
“At that first screening the song wasn’t working. I panicked. The humour wasn’t translating and Greta [Gerwig, director] had to fight. The studio asked her how much she...

The Oscars are almost upon us, and according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Billie Eilish will claim her second trophy for Best Original Song. She and her brother Finneas previously won for penning the title song from “No Time to Die,” and now they’re expected to prevail again for their ballad “What Was I Made For?” from “Barbie.” If they do, it would be the first time this century that a composition wins both Song of the Year at the Grammys and Best Original Song at the Oscars.
It’s less common than it used to be for soundtrack songs to cross over to the Grammys. The last time a song won both of these awards was actually Celine Dion‘s “My Heart Will Go On” from “Titanic.” Written by James Horner and Will Jennings, the classic love theme from the blockbuster film won Best Original...

The songs in the running for the 2024 Best Original Song Oscar are “It Never Went Away” (“American Symphony”), “I’m Just Ken” (“Barbie”), “What Was I Made For?” (“Barbie”), “The Fire Inside” (“Flamin’ Hot”), and “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Our current odds show that “What Was I Made For?” (31/10)) is favored to win, followed in order by “I’m Just Ken” (37/10), “It Never Went Away” (9/2), “The Fire Inside” (9/2), and “Wahzhazhe” (9/2).
This year’s roster of eight individual songwriters includes two pairs of former winners, each of which is associated with a “Barbie” song. Those who prevailed most recently are sibling duo Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, whose bid for “What Was I Made For?” comes two years after they took the gold for the title tune from the “James Bond” movie “No Time to Die” (2022). Ryan Gosling will be “Kenough” at the 2024 Academy Awards.
After rumors circulated on social media that the Barbie star would sing “I’m Just Ken” at the Oscars, which is nominated for best original song, a source close to the situation tells The Hollywood Reporter that Gosling is scheduled to perform the musical number.
Ken’s humorous ballad made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at No. 87 in August, merely weeks after the film’s release. Upon its success, Gosling released an EP in December, featuring three new renditions of the song—including a “Merry Kristmas” version.
THR had previously asked Mark Ronson, who co-wrote the song alongside Andrew Wyatt, if he thought the song would make its live debut at the Oscars. At the time, he said himself and the rest of the Barbie team “would love more than anything for Ryan to perform the song.” He added...

Can you feel the Kenergy? Ryan Gosling will, in fact, perform “I’m Just Ken” at the 2024 Academy Awards, according to Variety.
The Barbie hit was written by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, and features guitarists Slash and Wolfgang Van Halen and drummer Josh Freese. Presumably, some of those artists will join Gosling on stage for his performance at the Oscars.
Speaking to Consequence in a recent interview, Ronson explained that having Slash, Van Halen, and Freese play on the track was an idea they came up with at the “11th hour.”
“We wrote it as this ballad and it was pretty earnest, just piano — it was really lovely, because Ryan’s vocal over it was really vulnerable. But then we started playing it against the film and there’s this battle scene happening — Saving Private Ryan, but on, like, pedal boats,” Ronson said. “It needed to get bigger and bigger and bigger.

After months of speculation, Ryan Gosling will officially perform “I’m Just Ken” live at the Oscars.
Sources tell Variety that the actor will sing the Academy Award-nominated song from “Barbie” during the 96th annual ceremony on March 10. The Academy declined to comment.
Whether he would agree to show off his singing chops on the Oscars stage has been a big question ever since both Gosling and the song picked up nominations in January.
In his Variety cover story in early February, Gosling insisted that the Academy hadn’t yet asked him to perform. “It might be too much of a risk to have me do it,” said Gosling, who is up for an acting Oscar for his work as Ken. “I don’t know how that would work. But I’m open to it.”

Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers won Film of the Year and LGBTQ Film of the Year honors from the Dorian Film Awards, the annual honors bestowed Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics.
The Searchlight drama starring Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal as two troubled souls who fall for each other in lonely London, also scored a leading third win, LGBTQ Screenplay of the Year, for Haigh’s script. It led all nominees this year with nine.
“Twelve years ago, Andrew Haigh’s fresh and observant queer romance Weekend ruled our Dorians as well,” Galeca president Walt Hickey said Monday in revealing the awards. “So the fact that Strangers obviously touched many of our members’ hearts as well counts as sort of a sweet homecoming to our organization.”
