Aarya is a crime-thriller drama based on the Dutch drama series ‘Penoza‘. Sushmita Sen plays Aarya Sareen, an independent woman who seeks to protect her family and becomes a mafia gang to take revenge for her husband’s murder. Earlier, the show has been nominated for International Emmy Awards for best Drama series.
Having said so, the first thing that comes to my mind is about the producers / platform’s release strategy. They seem to be caught between being periodic or one-timer. I mean, most of the (Indian) web series that we see are released in one go (called a season). Fair enough, for, if the audience likes the content, they binge watch and feel satisfied. On the other hand there are these TV shows that release episodes on a daily/weekly basis. Similarly, we have seen quite a few international web series content release their episodes on a weekly basis.

Kaala Paani is a 2023 Indian drama series directed by Amit Golani and Sameer Saxena. The series stars Mona Singh, Ashutosh Gowariker, and Sukant Goel.
“Kaala Paani” is an engaging ensemble series that revolves around multiple protagonists who find themselves caught up in a situation. Their interconnected stories, driven by conflict and an epidemic, serve as the narrative backbone of this compelling television series from India.
This well-developed series maintains a deliberate and almost reflective pace. Don’t expect Hollywood-style sequences with grand effects like in a blockbuster film. Instead, it focuses on the characters, delving into their psychology and personal stories while intertwining them with the conflict of the unleashed epidemic and its resolution.
Plot
On a picturesque island in India called Jenkins, an epidemic breaks out in the waters. The population becomes isolated, leading to a violent situation.
Review of “Kaala Paani”

The survival drama series ‘Kaala Paani’ has just unveiled its trailer and it has a more haunting vibe than one can expect of a thriller series. Amidst the allure of the salty seas, the ocean’s breeze, there are many haunting mysteries in the dark of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and these things are menacing and unforgiving which warrants a desperate struggle for escape and survival.
This is what basically ‘Kaala Paani’ trailer is, a search for something mysterious that should not be touched only for it to bite back and chase you till your demise.
The premise of the show follows certain individuals who journey from the mainland into the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, trying to explore the mystery of Kaala Paani who find themselves trapped on the islands, away from the mainland, with no immediate help coming.
There is a presence of supernatural terror that is present...

Aarya 2(Disney+Hotstar, 8 episodes)
Directed by Ram Madhvani, Kapil Sharma, Vinod Rawat
Normally the thought of a sequel to a webseries scares the hell out of me. These encores are more often than not, an excuse for carrying things too far.
Not Aarya. Not Ram Madhvani and Sushmita Sen. The lethal duo have sculpted the most engaging crime drama on this side of the first season of Mirzapur. Aarya 2 is everything that a sequel to a triumphant first-season should be. It is gritty and revealing, powerful and yet sensitive where it needs to be.The shocks and surprises never stop spilling out right until the end.
It is a defly-written drama yoking its violent heart with a solid storytelling that moves fluently from hand-held camera sequences to solidly-grounded dramatic conflicts where the camera abnegates its presence. Madhavani who is master of dramatic crisis, uses Sushmita Sen’s powerhouse presence to...

Like many Asian countries, India has also been through an increase in social issues as a result of many developments, such as globalization and digitization. While the country has the foundation to be one of the world’s leaders in politics and technology, many aspects, for example, the growing gap within society, hold it back and have been the cause of much unrest within its population, a process which has only grown worse in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. When director and cinematographer Ashish Pant came up with the idea for his first feature film “The Knot”, or “Uljhan”, he was inspired by a personal memory of growing up in Lucknow, a city in northern India and the place where he spent his childhood, which was the starting point for a story exploring the theme of class within Indian society, and how it affects human relationships.

Probably one of the best independent Indian films of the year, Devashish Makhija’s “Ajji” takes a dark (noir) approach to the “Red Riding Hood” fairytale, by placing it in the Indian slums and inducing it with violence to the point of gore, and a number of pointy social remarks.
“Ajji” screened at Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles
When little Manda fails to show up after being sent for a small chore in the night, her grandmother and a local prostitute begin to search for her, only to find her raped and dumped in a trash heap in her slum. The world’s longest running South Asian film festival outside of India, the UK Asian Film Festival begins on March 27th and runs through May 4th. At a time of significant change, UK Asian Film Festival marks its 21st anniversary with a curated slate of films inspired by the theme of Revolution. Historically known as Tongues on Fire and then London Asian Film Festival, the festival is also synonymous with championing South Asian feminist films and supporting pioneering, female artists and auteurs.
Honouring Revolution through the vehicle of South Asian Cinema, UK Asian Film Festival looks at the #MeToo movement gathering momentum in the Indian and Pakistani film industries and the decriminalisation of homosexuality and the repeal of Section 377 in India last year.
Festival Director, Dr Pushpinder Chowdhry MBE says, “This year’s festival will present pertinent stories of the ordinary person told through films that address global challenges of our time.

Palm Springs Iff 2019: ‘Hamid’Review by Peter Belsito
I believe I’ve never seen a film from Kashmir before so this all looked and felt new.
Hamid is the story of a young village boy, a budding shipbuilder, whose loving father disappears near the film’s beginning. In his search for his dad, the boy enlists the help of God and the story drives on that relationship.
Hamid’s father, like many men in Kashmir, has suddenly gone missing, and the young boy finds his life turned upside down as he begins looking everywhere for him. Some 8,000 people have vanished since the conflicts of 1989, so it is no wonder that Hamid’s mother has become numb to tragedy, indifferent to the world around her, and unhelpful in answering Hamid’s many questions. Finally, she tells Hamid that his father has gone to God. Lonely and missing his father terribly,...

“No end to this torment/
I cry into the night.”
Ever since India became independent in 1947, the Kashmir region has been a place defined by war and conflict. Even though the ceasefire agreement between Pakistan and India has brought an end to some of the turmoils, the wounds these have left behind are more than visible in the faces of people, their families and the landscape itself. To make a film about the notion of innocence seems impossible considering Kashmir’s past, but this concept initially attracted Indian director Aijaz Khan to the region as the setting for his third feature film. In a statement published on the homepage of Business Standard, Khan states how innocence may transform people and even regions, a reminder of the losses of past conflicts and the kind of qualities which may unite us all in the end.

Probably one of the best independent Indian films of the year, Devashish Makhija’s “Ajji” takes a dark (noir) approach to the “Red Riding Hood” fairytale, by placing it in the Indian slums and inducing it with violence to the point of gore, and a number of pointy social remarks.
When little Manda fails to show up after being sent for a small chore in the night, her grandmother and a local prostitute begin to search for her, only to find her raped and dumped in a trash heap in her slum. As soon as they arrive home, the family informs Dastur, the local policeman of the sexual assault, with the girl almost immediately identifying the perpetrator as Dhavle, the son of the local governor. However, Dastur is not only unwilling to help, but actually threatens them to drop the whole thing, by hinting on the fact that Manda’s parents have illegal jobs.
