We look ahead to Gareth Edwards’ Jurassic City, what it might be like, and how it connects to his very earliest work.
In the press tour for his 2023 sci-fi film The Creator, British director Gareth Edwards suggested that, after the bruising experiences of making 2014’s Godzilla and in particular 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, he wouldn’t rush to go back to studio filmmaking again.
Suggesting that both of those films had started production without finalised scripts, Edwards said as recently as January that “I have to concentrate on personal and original projects.”
This stance appeared to change rather abruptly just one month later, when Universal approached Edwards with the offer to direct the next Jurassic Park (or Jurassic World) sequel. Original director David Leitch had dropped out, and with the film’s production racing to meet a self-set 2025 release date, Universal Pictures needed a replacement in a...

From a certain perspective, monster movies might not seem to be as relevant during monstrous times. But in an age when our fears seem larger than life and the world constantly seems as though it’s on the brink of collapse, the best examples of the genre can almost assume a documentary-like authenticity, reflecting our reality as vividly as vérité ever could.
“The Babadook” might be about a demon that pops out of a children’s book, but no recent film does a better job of capturing the acute reality of living with grief. “Cloverfield” follows a gaggle of pre-Instagram model millennials as they’re chased around Manhattan by a bug-eyed colossus, but few of the somber post-9/11 dramas do a better job of distilling the heartsick chaos of watching your hometown try to make sense of a senseless attack. “The Village” is...

So…what is sci-fi? It’s not the easiest question to answer when “sci-fi elements” permeate so many of the biggest blockbusters: thought-provoking genre concepts flattened into one-size-fits-all franchise fodder that make countless titles “feel” and, on occasion, even look the same.
Yes, science fiction is rooted in profound origins, examining humanity’s deep-seated fear of itself and the intimidating possibility of worlds unknown. But the last two decades have seen a metaphoric rush on sci-fi storytelling that’s left the once niche subgenre a supersaturated movie market. On the one hand, that’s produced an onslaught of sci-fi(ish) titles that aren’t always up to snuff. But on the other, it’s prompted some of the best sci-fi films ever made. Masterworks like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Nope” both arrived in the past two years, and top our list at number five and number eight respectively.

Gareth Edwards has made films at both ends of the budget spectrum, and his latest sci-fi film, The Creator, is his valiant attempt to find a balance between the two.
In his feature directorial debut, Monsters (2010), Edwards received a crash course in independent guerrilla filmmaking, as he roamed around Latin America with Scoot McNairy, Whitney Able and a skeleton crew, shooting an original sci-fi film on the fly with prosumer-grade equipment. With a determination to find real-world locations that were compelling in and of themselves, Edwards minimized any dependency on VFX augmentation, allowing him to cut together his movie and then composite only the VFX elements that were absolutely necessary.
And following his experiences as the director of the $160 million-budgeted Godzilla (2014) and the $220-million Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), Edwards wanted the best of both worlds for his new John David Washington-led sci-fi film about a war between humans and AI.

The Creator is a sci-fi film directed by Gareth Edwards, the visionary behind Monsters, Godzilla, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The film stars John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Allison Janney, and newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles. The film is set in a future war between humans and artificial intelligence, where a former soldier (Washington) is tasked with hunting down and killing the Creator, the elusive mastermind of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon that can end the war and mankind itself. However, he discovers that the weapon is actually an AI in the form of a young child (Voyles), and he must decide whether to follow his orders or protect her.

When Gareth Edwards directed his first movie, the 2010 indie “Monsters,” it could scarcely have been a more DIY endeavor. He had less than $500,000 to tell an intimate story about two Americans contending with giant aliens rampaging through Mexico, so his crew consisted of just his actors (Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able), a sound tech, a line producer, a translator and a driver. Edwards operated the camera, grabbing footage guerrilla style whenever they came upon a compelling location while traveling through Central America. Then the young director created all 250 visual effects shots for the film himself, alone in his flat.
Thirteen years later, Edwards’ latest film, “The Creator,” is in so many ways the opposite of “Monsters.” The budget is $80 million. 20th Century Studios is distributing it worldwide. (New Regency and Entertainment One co-financed.) Dozens of actors — including John David Washington, Allison Janney and Ken Watanabe — filmed across Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam,...

Monsters, Pluto TV
One of the many sites in the UK where you can now stream movies for free, Pluto has an eclectic mix. Among its gems is this outing from Rogue One director Gareth Edwards, which is set six years after an alien invasion of Earth, when the creatures have been confined to an "infected zone". The plot revolves around a photographer (Scott McNairy), who is desperate for a snap of one of the monsters but given a trickier assignment by his boss - to rescue his daughter (Whitney Able). Edward keeps his monsters subtle as the pair end up on a road trip that blossoms with unexpected romance, with the special effects all the more remarkable given that the director knocked them up at home. Here he proves less can certainly be more.

Shot run-and-gun style by Edwards and a tiny crew, Monsters was an unusual blend of road-trip drama with light touches of sci-fi; its focus was the growing friendship between a photograph journalist (Scoot McNairy) and his boss's daughter (Whitney Able) travelling across a Central America ravaged not so much by the title’s Lovecraftian kaiju but by a military intent on keeping them well away from American soil.
Monsters’ success saw Edwards move to Hollywood, where he’s so far headlined the daddy of all kaiju movies, Godzilla, and now set to head up another pop culture giant - the Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One. This left production company Vertigo with a potential franchise on its hands,...

Low Spirits: Galland’s Energetic Supernatural Comedy Doesn’t Retain Dominion
The increasingly tenuous distinction between what constitutes either horror or comedy is further exemplified in Ava’s Possessions, the third feature from multifaceted Jordan Galland. A modified spin on the popular subgenre of demonic possession and exorcism titles that we’ve long been familiar with, Galland’s latest is a comedy marinated generously with supernatural elements. Amusing yet never as clever as one would hope it to be, this plays rather like the simple structure of mainstream fodder like The Hangover parading around in a Halloween costume. Those hoping for something eerie, creepy, or atmospheric will be disappointed, but fans of its attractive cast and some impressive production elements makes this more appealing than dubious detractors may predict.

Though Liam Neeson has propelled many an action thriller to big box office numbers, his gritty noir A Walk Among the Tombstones was not what you’d call a big hit – and that’s a shame, considering that the hard-boiled detective story is a much better movie than Unknown, Taken 2 and Non-Stop added together. Luckily, for those of you who missed it in theaters, Universal Studios Home Entertainment has just announced that it will be bringing A Walk Among the Tombstones to Blu-Ray on January 13th next year.
The Blu-Ray will include a 1080p resolution transfer and a DTS-hd Master Audio 5.1 track. Additionally, a DVD, Uv digital copy and iTunes-compatible digital copy will be included on the release. Special features include:
Matt Sudder: Private Eye – Author Lawrence Block and Screenwriter/Director Scott Frank discuss the complex character of Matt Scudder and how he transforms from page to screen. (Blu-ray...

By 2010, Hollywood’s obsession with 3D movies was in full swing. James Cameron’s Avatar may have given audiences a taste of what the cutting edge of stereoscope could look like, but it has to be said that the movies ushered into cinemas in its wake were a decidedly mixed bunch. Toy Story 3's 3D was extraordinarily effective, yet Clash Of The Titans looked like a blurry mess. How To Train Your Dragon came to life in its flying sequences, but the less said about the horribly murky Last Airbender, the better.

Amber Heard was nineteen when she played the title character in Jonathan Levine's slasher film All the Boys Love Mandy Lane; she can at least get away with playing a seventeen year-old. Mandy Lane, which debuts this month on Blu-ray, is better known for its reputation of having been shelved for seven years following its debut at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival for reasons best served by another article. Up to this point, Ms. Heard was already a veteran of four films and several television appearances; this is her first real starring role, as the film rests on her shoulders. She gives quite a remarkably natural performance and having seen her work since this 2005-lensed outing, I would attribute her onscreen “nervousness” as the object of affection by testosterone-driven wolves in her midst to her skill as a serious dramatic actress than to an inability to relax...

Abandoned but never quite forgotten, "All the Boys Love Mandy Lane" finally reaches theaters seven years after it was finished. A graphically violent, sexually explicit teen horror tale, it was close to being ahead of its time, in its time. Now, it plays like a quaint, fairly obvious period piece -- from 2006.
The reason it was worth releasing was its rising star, Amber Heard, just at the beginning of her big-haired blonde bombshell appeal. "Zombieland," "Drive Angry" and the new film "Machete Kills" were years ahead of her. But even then, you could pick her out as star in this cast. And not just because she had the title role.
Mandy Lane is the freshman who "got (bleeping) gorgeous" over the summer before her sophomore year. The boys don't try to hide their lust. She's loyal to best friend Emmet (Michael Welch of "The Twilight Saga"). But dragging him along...

"Zombieland," "Drive Angry" and the new film "Machete Kills" were years ahead of her. But even then, you could pick her out as star in this cast. And not just because she had the title role.

The Pain is Calling, Oh Mandy: Levinson’s Satisfying Debut Finally Hits Theaters
Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival way back in 2006, Jonathan Levine’s directorial debut, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane will finally hit theaters. Three subsequent films by Levine have been completed and released in the interim, and star Amber Heard has gone on to become a notable rising star in the Hollywood film system. Curiously, his debut is modeled after 1980s slasher flicks, though featuring better character development than many of the grindhouse titles it pays homage to. Trashily compelling in its over the top handling of the male gaze and consumption of the female image, there’s hardly anything revolutionary going on in the thanklessly delayed flick, and it’s blighted with a wowser of an ill-advised final twist. But its rough-hewn edges bring a certain engaging charm, especially considering the film is unlike anything...

When Scoot McNairy isn't working, he's off the grid. The 35-year-old actor, who can soon be seen opposite Rosemarie DeWitt in Lynn Shelton's "Touchy Feely" (opening in select theaters this Friday), keeps a home with his wife, actress Whitney Able, in a rural town of about 15 people in his home state of Texas. Wait...15 people? "Yep," the actor says when calling in from London, where he's shooting "Black Sea," a submarine thriller with Jude Law, directed by Kevin Macdonald. "We live off a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. Our phones don't even work." McNairy doesn't divulge exactly where this town is, or what it's called, but he does say he owns a good bit of land off that dirt road, land that isn't just home to him and Able, his co-star from 2010's "Monsters," but "a bunch of cows," and whatever construction project the tried-and-true Southern boy might have in the works.
