On Sunday night, Broadway honored the best live theater of the year at the 76th annual Tony Awards.
At a time of the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, it was a possibility that the ceremony would not happen this year, but the WGA and the Tony Awards’ organizers reached an agreement where the show would not be picketed and the writers would not work on the telecast. The previous time this occurred was in 1988 when Phantom of the Opera and Into the Woods competed for Best Musical.
The Tonys was the first major ceremony to take place amid the current writers’ strike. While other awards shows need a host and numerous presenters to say written remarks about the competitors and provide good ratings, the Tonys already have a built-in fan base that only requires around a dozen performances and winners’ speeches to succeed.

The 2023 Tony Awards just honored a fresh group of incredible talents. Trophies were handed out at the United Palace Theater in NYC on June 11. This year's big winners include "Killing Eve" star Jodie Comer for her role in "Prima Facie," the play "Leopoldstadt," and the musical "Kimberly Akimbo."
"Shucked" star Alex Newell and "Some Like It Hot" star J. Harrison Ghee also made history as they became the award show's first openly nonbinary acting winners. The Tony Awards do not have gender-neutral acting categories. Newell, an alum of "The Glee Project," took home the award for featured actor in a musical. Ghee also won in their category, best actor in a musical.
The annual theater award ceremony was hosted by Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, who is emceeing without a script amid the 2023 writers strike.
Ahead, these are the 2023 Tony winners.

In a Broadway season bursting at the seams with critically-acclaimed production — 38 musicals, plays, and revivals opened during the 2022-2023 eligibility window — it is no surprise that the 40 Tony Awards nominators caught theatre aficionados off guard with some of their choices.
In particular, two new plays exceeded our nominations expectations. Ahead of the announcement this morning, our official odds predicted only a single nomination for the Pulitzer Prize-winner “Cost of Living” for Katy Sullivan in Featured Actress — although many of our savvy editors and experts knew this would break through in Best Play. But few anticipated it would earn five bids, including Director for Jo Bonney, who ranked in 12th place with only 11 folks predicting her, Kara Young for Featured Actress in ninth place and David Zayas for Featured Actor in eighth place.

“Out of all the Tony categories this season, this could be the most complicated,” notes Sam Eckmann about the race for the top Broadway honor of Best Play. It’s a sentiment we share about Best Play Revival, too, as we discuss our final predictions for the upcoming 76th Tony Awards nominations. All told, 23 productions will contend for slots in categories honoring the best dramatic works of the year, which will be announced on May 2. Watch the full video slugfest above.
Ironically, even with an embarrassment of riches of shows from which to predict the top two categories, Sam and I have identical lineups. For Best Play, we’re both picking “Leopoldstadt,” “Fat Ham,” “Between Riverside and Crazy,” “Cost of Living,” and “Life of Pi,” but there are plenty of other works we think could sneak in. Sam thinks “Ain’t No Mo’” is in a close sixth place and singles out “Good Night,...

Best Play is always a crowded field thanks to a slew of limited engagements that pepper the Broadway calendar, and this season is no different. 18 new works will attempt to be singled out as one of the five nominees.
“Leopoldstat” opened in October to a rapturous response from critics and audiences. It’s the latest drama from Tom Stoppard, who has won this category more than any other playwright. Featuring a vast ensemble cast which includes David Krumholtz, Brandon Uranowitz, and Faye Castelow, the gut wrenching story follows a Jewish family over multiple generations. Fans of the extraordinary Audra McDonald have had a long wait for her return to the Broadway stage. Yes, she did host the 2021 Tony Awards that were previously postponed by the pandemic, and yes, she has been starring in “The Good Fight” with countless theatre alums, but nothing compares to seeing McDonald live. After three and a half years, the actress now leads the first production of an Adrienne Kennedy play on Broadway: “Ohio State Murders” opened at the newly-minted James Earl Jones Theatre on Dec. 8.
In “Ohio State Murders,” McDonald plays Suzanne Alexander, a writer who returns to her former college to deliver a lecture on her work. Through her narration, she reveals the racism she experienced as a young student, her relationship with a professor (played by Tony Award nominee Bryce Pinkham), and the murders of the play’s title that continue to haunt her and her writing.

“Every aspect of my life is completely different from the day that I was sent the script,” says Katy Sullivan, star of Manhattan Theatre Club’s limited Broadway run of Cost of Living, while wiping under her eyes.
It’s not the only time the actress, producer and four-time U.S. Paralympic champion has become emotional while discussing her multi-year journey with Ani, a quadriplegic and the ex-wife of an unemployed truck driver played by David Zayas. Speaking just days after her final performance as a character she’s owned for literal years — originating the role from its Williamstown Theatre Festival world premiere along with co-star Gregg Mozgala — Sullivan acknowledges it’s hard to let go of something that has not only become part of her but literally changed her life.
“We had the most lovely, generous audience ready to laugh and cry with us — just a glorious group of humans came.

“Only to connect,” that was the theme of E.M. Forrester’s classic Howard’s End, and, a century later, it’s also the through-line of the Pulitzer-Prize-winning play The Cost Of Living by Martyna Mojak, which opened Monday night at the Samuel Friedman Theater in its Broadway debut after a successful off-Broadway run.
The show opens with truck driver Eddie (David Zayas) being invited for a drink at a Williamsburg bar by his dead wife over text – it may or may not have been new women assigned his wife’s phone number. The next scene cuts to Jess (Kara Young), a struggling college graduate trying to make ends meet, caring for John (Greg Mozgala), a privileged wheelchair-bound grad student with cerebral palsy. Both are lonely and needy but the power differential is yet to become clear. In the following scene, we see Eddie begging his ex wife Ani (Katy Sullivan...

A Pulitzer Prize can be a burden, one must assume, trumpeting expectations and pumping reputations from a distance. Martyna Majok‘s Cost of Living won the trophy in 2018, and that victory has been mentioned often in the lead-up to the play’s opening on Broadway tonight in a Manhattan Theatre Club production at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.
An often moving, not quite as often cloying but generally disappointing quadruple portrait of two “differently abled” people — the term is loathed by at least one of them — and the not-quite-prepared caregivers enlisted to assist them, Cost of Living does better as character study than workable play. Still, it has more than a few moments of grace — and a fine cast — that combine to raise it beyond the well-meaning exercise it might otherwise have been.

“Death of a Salesman”

A decade after Dexter Morgan sailed off into the sunset storm, he’s back and ready for some new blood. Showtime officially greenlit a “Dexter” revival in October 2020, with the premiere date taking place on November 7, 2021. Michael C. Hall is back, of course, as the adorably geeky Bay Harbor Butcher, aka the Miami, Fl blood splatter analyst/serial killer who focuses his bloodlust on murdering other serial killers. Original showrunner Clyde Phillips is also back as an executive producer of the new episodes. Here’s everything to know about “Dexter: New Blood” Season 9, including the cast and trailer.

It's fan service at its finest.
On Dexter: New Blood Season 1 Episode 1, we are introduced to a kinder, gentler Dexter, existing in a climate as different from Miami as possible.
It's not long until the bloodlust kicks in, and Dexter is back to his old ways. But that's why we're here, isn't it?
After Dexter's poorly resolved "final season," viewers were left with a bad taste in their mouths. When Showtime announced that the series would return with a limited run, fans remained skeptical but intrigued.
With Clyde Phillips, showrunner of the first four seasons (widely considered Dexter's best), heading the production, we needn't have worried. Dexter: New Blood feels like a return to the old Dexter we knew and loved.
There are many differences, but the tone feels the same as in the original series. There are enough callbacks to remind us how we got hooked without feeling gratuitous.

Michael C. Hall’s Dexter tries to blend in as a townie in the new trailer for Dexter: New Blood, set to premiere November 7th on Showtime.
The 10-episode revival finds Dexter living under an assumed name, Jim Lindsay, while residing in snowy Iron Lake, New York, where he runs a sporting goods store. Although in the new clip Dexter/Jim seems generally well-adjusted, he’s also doing a lot of brooding over the possibility that his real identity might come out, while simultaneously struggling to repress his urge to maim and kill.

"Incomplete... I still have some feeling." Aspire Inc. has released an official trailer for an indie drama titled T11 Incomplete, which has premiered at a few film festivals earlier this year. It's next premiering at the Outfest LA Film Festival this month. Spoiler Alert: The report includes details about the Season 3 finale of Station 19.
After all the drama encountered this season, the firefighters of Station 19 are letting loose. ABC’s Season 3 finale, titled “Louder Than a Bomb,” kicks off with the crew dancing and drinking the night away. Everyone is having a good time — except Andy (Jaina Lee Ortiz), who’s still trying to put the pieces of her past together while dealing husband’s recent suspension after he confessed to using fentanyl. More on these later.
The next day, the hungover crew is summoned to handle a five-alarm fire at Pac North hospital. At the scene, Maya’s (Danielle Savre) dad shows up to cheer her on at work, which turns out to be a disaster.
While evacuating the remaining civilians in the building, Ben (Jason George) and Travis (Jay Hayden) encounter a 250-pound man with a bad back...

Now I’m not silly enough to think that any movie that is completely original or, at least shows some originality, is going to be good. But I am in the camp that believes filmmakers should definitely be trying to make movies that no one else has or that they have never seen before. And if someone does that, they will at the very least, have my attention.
And from the first few minutes, Saint Bernard definitely grabbed my attention. But I had no idea the kind of craziness that would happen in the next ninety minutes.
Make no mistake about it, Saint Bernard is a crazy movie. By the time the credits roll I wondered if I understood anything that I had just watched but not...
