Caitlin Cronenberg’s feature-length directorial debut, Humane, presents a world where environmental collapse is no longer theoretical. While the full extent of that collapse is never fully detailed, it’s bad enough where people can no longer expose their bare skin to the sun anymore. Naturally, instead of, say, regulating the environmental impact of big businesses, working with scientists, or increasing efforts toward sustainability, the governments of the world collectively decide on going full Thanos: 20% of the world’s population must be culled, and people are being encouraged to volunteer for euthanasia. Those who volunteer are given a $250,000 reward to distribute to their next of kin, and as you can imagine, lower classes and marginalized folks aren’t taking the idea of state-sponsored murder for cash very well.
That’s a hell of a starting point, and it’s one that seems bent on slowly ratcheting up the tension into white-knuckle terrain,...

"For humanity to survive, 20% of the population must volunteer to die" in Humane, the feature film directorial debut of Caitlin Cronenberg. An exploration of the lethal lengths humanity (and one family in particular) will take to preserve itself in the face of a worldwide ecological disaster, Humane will arrive in select theaters on April 26th, and we have a look at the trailer ahead of its release.
Directed by Caitlin Cronenberg and written and produced by Michael Sparaga, Humane stars Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, Enrico Colantoni, Sebastian Chacon, Sirena Gulamgaus, Alanna Bale, and Peter Gallagher.
Synopsis: Humane takes place over a single day, mere months after a global ecological collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population. In a wealthy enclave, a recently retired newsman has invited his grown children to dinner to announce his intentions to enlist in the nation’s new euthanasia program.

"We are engaged in a life or death struggle against our own extinction." Oh oh what do we have here?? IFC Films + Shudder have revealed the first official trailer for Humane, marking the feature directorial debut of Canadian photographer Caitlin Cronenberg. Yet another Cronenbrg getting into making horror films - yes she's the daughter of David Cronenberg, and brother of fellow filmmaker Brandon Cronenberg. Humane is a chilling dystopian satire opening in theaters first this April before it's streaming on Shudder in the summer. In the wake of a catastrophic environmental collapse that is forcing humanity to shed 20% of its population (are we headed here?), a family dinner erupts into chaos when a father's plan to enlist in the government's new euthanasia program goes horribly awry. Set over one night at this home. The film stars Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, Peter Gallagher, Enrico Colantoni, Sebastian Chacon, with Alanna Bale, and Sirena Gulamgaus.

We thought there might be a chance of Humane slipping into the 2023 film fest schedule, but Caitlin Cronenberg did move into production only in October of last year on her feature debut – so one full year of post (with possible sci-fi elements) work makes sense for a January drop and perhaps Park City is fertile Cronenberg ground as her brother Brandon has preemed here with his last two features Possessor in 2020 and Infinity Pool in 2023. Featuring Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, Peter Gallagher, Sebastian Chacon, Alanna Bale and Sirena Gulamgaus, production took place in Hamilton. Vampirism has been used as a metaphor for various kinds of addiction in several films over the years, like The Addiction (1995) and Larry Fessenden’s Habit (1995). There are just so many ways to compare creatures of the night who need to drink blood to survive to humans’ many unhealthy addictions. What would happen if a vampire decided to try and kick their habit of drinking blood? Filmmaker Blaine Thurier (Teen Lust) poses this question in his new film Kicking Blood and the answer is captivating.
Written by Thurier and Leonard Farlinger, and directed by Thurier, Kicking Blood premiered at Toronto International Film Festival in 2021. The film stars Alanna Bale as Anna, a vampire who likes to read books and works the overnight shift in a library, and Luke Bilyk (Adams Testament) as Robbie, a messy alcoholic whose life is falling apart.

"Kicking old habits... can be deadly." LevelFilm in Canada has unveiled the official trailer for a Canadian indie horror drama titled Kicking Blood, about a female vampire who tries to give up blood and become human again. This first premiered at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival last year. When Anna, a centuries old vampire, watches Robbie, a charming but reckless young man, recover from his alcoholism, she decides to quit blood and restore her humanity. The filmmakers state that they were inspired to update the vampire mythology - explaining more: "the idea of being immortal and addicted and you have to live in darkness. You can’t see the sunlight and you have no soul, and would there be just the tiniest spark left to compel you to try to recover from your addiction and reconnect with your soul in the end." Kicking Blood stars Alanna Bale, Luke Bilyk, Benjamin Sutherland,...

"They're not people, they're weapons!" Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for an indie sci-fi thriller about mutants, of course, called Enhanced. There are so many mutants films nowadays, it's becoming a dime-a-dozen and they're not that original anymore. A young woman with "enhanced" abilities finds herself hunted down by a sinister government organization. But when an even stronger mutant serial killer emerges on the scene, agents and mutants are forced to question their allegiances. Alanna Bale stars, with George Tchortov, Adrian Holmes, Chris Mark, Eric Hicks, Michael J. Delaney, and Patrick Sabongui. This is made by a former stuntman, so at least the action looks cool, but not sure the rest of it'll be any good. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for James Mark's Enhanced, direct from YouTube: George Shepherd is part of an elite private military unit that specializes in capturing mutant fugitives. Killjoys Season 5 Episode 4
“When you remember where you have been, you dream of where you might go.”
Any concern that Killjoys might fall prey to a capture/escape/capture narrative trap quickly dissipates as “Ship Outta Luck” returns Team Awesome Force to full on fight mode, and the season’s strongest episode brings further into focus the conflicting forces jockeying for position. Dutch, Johnny, and Zeph gather their wits and re-enter the fight to stop The Lady from overrunning Westerly, but it’s Khlyen’s role in this undertaking that provides some of the most intriguing possibilities.
Though The Lady and Khlyen appear sparingly throughout the season, that does nothing to diminish their importance. And while evil children typically rank high on the creepiness scale,...
