During an appearance at Scad TVFest, brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, creators of Netflix's Stranger Things, revealed that their new show The Boroughs shares "a lot of DNA" with the juggernaut series, as well as a beloved but hard-to-find 1980s sci-fi classic.

Per Collider, the Duffer brothers revealed information about the upcoming series, which is set in a New Mexico retirement community and follows a group of misfits who discover a sinister supernatural force threatening their lives. If that premise sounds similar to the 1985 Ron Howard film Cocoon, that's not an accident, though the concepts are ultimately very different.

Ross Duffer explained that The Boroughs is based on an idea from The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, who will serve as showrunners while the Duffers produce:

All it took was a Kate Bush track and the reading of a letter to clue the world into the greatness of Sadie Sink, who plays tomboy Max Mayfield in the fourth season of Netflix’s “Stranger Things.” Her outstanding work in this season of the hit fantasy show has captured the cultural zeitgeist. With phase one voting merely two weeks away, she may have put herself in firm contention to nab her first Emmy nomination for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series.

The 20-year-old sensation had the most significant arc of any character in the seven-episode season. The story finds Maxine in a very dark place following the death of her stepbrother Billy (Dacre Montgomery), where the trauma of the events has taken its toll on Max. The Twitter account Stranger Writers is managed by the people who are in the writer’s room for the mega-popular Netflix series Stranger Things. The main writers and creators of the series are the Duffer Brothers, Matt and Ross Duffer, as well as co-writers Jessie Nickson-Lopez, Paul Dichter, and Kate Trefry. The crew must know by now how much of a fanbase has built around the series, so they are giving us something to talk about while we await the fourth season that’s still a ways off.

“Stranger Things” fans will get a deeper look into both Eleven’s mother and Dr. Brenner in the show’s official prequel novel “Suspicious Minds.”

The book reveals how Terry Ives–whom fans of the show will remember for her iconic “Breathe. Sunflower. Rainbow” moment–first came into contact with Brenner as part of the secretive Mkultra project.

The book is written by Gwenda Bond, who also worked closely with “Stranger Things” staff writer Paul Dichter on the book. It will be released by Del Rey Books, an imprint of Random House, a division of Penguin Random House, on Feb. 5

Winners of the 2018 Writers Guild of America Awards were revealed on Feb. 11 in ceremonies held simultaneously in Los Angeles and New York. As only screenplays written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are eligible for consideration, these kudos, which are celebrating their 70th anniversary, have not been the most reliable barometer of the Oscars.

Indeed, one of this year’s leading contenders for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars — Martin McDonagh for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” — was ruled out of the running by the guild. However, that WGA race does include four of the other Academy Awards nominees — “The Big Sick,” “Get Out,” “Lady Bird” and “The Shape of Water.” It is rounded out by “I, Tonya.” Jordan Peele won for “Get Out” edging out Greta Gerwig, who had been predicted to win for “Lady Bird.”

In the past nine years only 59 of the WGA nominees have numbered among the 90 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Indeed, 2014’s Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay, “Birdman,” was deemed ineligible. Likewise for one of this year’s leading contenders for that award: “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
