The tale begins with a crime that left everyone baffled. In July 1976, a school bus carrying 26 children (and one driver) was hijacked in the sleepy Central California town of Chowchilla. The kidnap victims were taken to two vans, driven to an abandoned rock quarry, led off the bus, and essentially buried alive in an underground compartment full of mattresses. Things like that just didn’t happen in a town like this.
Seventies California was loaded with bad juju, from the Zodiac Killer to the Patty Hearst kidnapping to Jim Jones.

CNN unveiled its slate of series and films planned for 2023, as the original projects unit prepares to scale back and take production in house.
The lineup of original series includes Giuliani: What Happened to America’s Mayor?, debuting on Jan. 8, as well as United States of Scandal with Jake Tapper and another devoted to the history of Las Vegas. Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, and Mark Herzog also return with another in their “decades” projects, this one focusing on the 2010s.
But the lineup will look far different in coming years, as the network announced in October that it was pulling back on original series and films, ending collaborations with outside partners. Most of the projects on the slate were in the works before the decision was made.
Amy Entelis, executive vice president for talent and content development for CNN Worldwide, said in a statement, “Our CNN Original Series and CNN...

"Peaky Blinders," the BBC drama following the exploits of a gangster family rising to the ranks in the aftermath of the first World War, features a stellar star cast and well-informed characters. Upon meeting leading man Cillian Murphy's Tommy Shelby, the fierce family patriarch and a crime boss set on moving up in the world regardless of the cost, viewers were enamored with him. He's strategic and always prepared, a step ahead of his enemies. Well, most of them, at least.
In season 4 of "Peaky Blinders," we're introduced to Adrien Brody's Luca Changretta, a man hardened by systemic prejudice. He backs Tommy into a corner when he least expects it, hits him when he's most vulnerable, and transforms the show for the better. He's not a one-dimensional villain — Luca is reserved and cunning, which makes him more unsettling than an outright villain. Brody's nuanced performance cemented Changretta as...

Clean
A pared down, gritty action thriller set to make quite an impact on audiences, Clean is notable as the writing début of its star, Adrien Brody. Its other writer, and director, is Paul Solet, whose first feature, Grace, wowed audiences in 2009 and who has been building up his reputation ever since. The two met on the set of Bullet Head in 2017, and it’s with that film that I began my recent conversation with Paul, in which he discussed his partnership with Adrien, what they hoped to achieve with Clean, and the technical challenges involved in bringing it to the screen.
“We really got along well on Bullet Head and we have very similar sensibilities and tastes,” he says of his collaborator. “We definitely knew right away we wanted to do something else together, so we started spitballing. Adrien had had a notion for a long time...

Glenn Fleshler is a joy to watch as a bad guy in Brody’s otherwise disappointing, don’t-mess-with-the-quiet-type drama
While Paul Solet is credited as the director, producer and co-screenwriter for this gloomy, Taxi Driver-style tale about a lonely man with lots of firearms, the film’s star Adrien Brody was the other screenwriter, another one of its producers, and even the composer of the deep register, synth-based score. So if that doesn’t make this a vanity project for Brody, then it’s at least a bit of a folie à deux, given the end result is so pretentious and derivative.
At least there are a few redeeming features in the supporting cast, including, in reverse order of redemptiveness, the always welcome RZA as a gun-shop owner, Chandler DuPont as an ingenue street kid called Dianda who inspires protectiveness in Brody’s protagonist, and Hollywood’s favourite balding bad guy,...

"Clean" represents a lot of work and passion from Adrien Brody. The actor doesn't only star in the new film from director Paul Solet ("Gracie"), but he also wrote it, produced it, and composed music for it. Even days before the release date, Brody was still hard at work on the picture. After years of working on "Clean," Brody tells us he's feeling lucky that people now have the opportunity to see all that hard work on display.
For the Academy Award-winning actor, that independent spirit felt right for the story. "It's telling the story about a guy that hand-builds and...

Clean (Paul Solet)
Hard-edged, old-fashioned, and anchored by a sturdy movie star performance from Adrien Brody, Clean plays well as a socially-tinged vigilante thriller. Directed by Paul Solet (from a script he co-wrote with Brody), the film moves fast and rises above certain genre tropes. Brody plays Clean, a garbage man seeped in the sins of his past. In the opening minutes, he goes about his day: driving his early morning route before retiring to his industrial dwelling wherein he retrieves abandoned machines from a junkyard and brings them back to life. The resurrected results he sells to local pawnbroker Kurtis. – Dan M. (full review)

Until just a few weeks ago, Spider-Man: No Way Home was set to face Spidey nemesis Morbius at the box office this weekend. Sony decided to push its “Ssu” (Sony’s Spider-Man Universe) film starring Jared Leto back to April, and nothing has come to fill the vacated slot. Without any new wide releases, the webslinger will have yet another weekend where it rules the box office. After reclaiming the top spot from Scream last weekend, the MCU film is set to have its fifth number one weekend, a feat only a few films in recent decades have achieved.
If Spider-Man continues with its 30-40% drops, it will fall below $10 million in a weekend for the first time, and on Monday it fell below $1 million in a day for the first time. Of course, this is nothing to fret about for the fourth top domestic grosser ever, currently at $723 million.

"You know, we don't need anyone to save us..." "Just trying to save myself." IFC Films has revealed the first official trailer for Clean, a thriller from filmmaker Paul Solet. This was originally supposed to premiere at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival last year, it's now being released in January from IFC. A garbage collector, tormented by his past, is sucked into the orbit of a local crime boss and must face the violence of his past to find redemption in this bloody thrill ride. Tribeca describes it as "a brooding and sullen snapshot of failed redemption" and "a hyper-violent meditation on the power of the past and the struggle for salvation." Clean is produced by and stars Adrien Brody as the "Trash Man", with a cast featuring Glenn Fleshler, Richie Merritt, Chandler Ari DuPont, Mykelti Williamson, RZA, Michelle Wilson, and John Bianco. It looks like a much grittier, darker John Wick...

If a story about a reformed killer returning to his murderous ways to hunt down and slaughter Russian mobsters sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the synopsis for “John Wick.” It’s also, however, the premise of “Clean,” director Paul Solet’s thriller — co-written by leading man Adrien Brody — about a hit man getting back in homicidal business. Obvious and derivative in borderline-shameless fashion, it’s That’ll make it a tough sell following its Tribeca Film Festival premiere (delayed from last year), although genre fans hungry for hackneyed action with a healthy dose of “Taxi Driver”-ish brooding may welcome its by-the-numbers mayhem.

In his off time he rebuilds discarded electronics, cleans up empty houses and looks after Dianda, trying to protect her from the downtrodden neighbourhood they live in. Glenn Fleshler is Michael, the local drug lord who uses his fish mongering business as a front. Michael’s son is coming out of prison as the story begins and he chooses a local gang over his father. As gangland violence spills out into the streets and threatens the safety of Dianda and her grandmother, Clean has no choice but to get involved and relive his past. Horror anthologies have made a pretty healthy comeback in the last few years; some are ok, some are regrettable, and some have awesome production values as well as good stories, such as Tales Of Halloween. Created by director Axelle Carolyn, Tales features 11 directors helming 10 tales of bad behavior, wickedness, madness, and spooky fun, with an animated opening sequence by Ashley Thorpe. Made under the umbrella collective of "The October Society," this film showcases the talents of horror directors Carolyn, Neil Marshall, Darren Lynn Bousman, John Skipp, Andrew Kasch, Lucky McKee, Adam Gierasch, Dave Parker, Mike Mendez, Ryan Schifrin, and Paul Solet. If the events recounted in “Tread” had not occurred in real life, you might mistake any synopsis of its storyline for a treatment written by some grindhouse-cinema aficionado as a tribute to ‘70s rural-revenge thrillers. Indeed, Paul Solet’s remarkably absorbing and suspenseful documentary often plays like the dark flip side of that audience-stoking subgenre — think Jonathan Kaplan’s “White Line Fever” or Jonathan Demme’s “Fighting Mad” — in which working-class protagonists transform tools of their trade into blunt-instrument weapons while battling corrupt oppressors.
For roughly the first third of the movie’s running time, Marvin Heemeyer, a fiftysomething welder and muffler-shop owner in the small Colorado mountain town of Granby, certainly seems to fit the genre stereotype of a hard-working, straight-shooting guy who doesn’t become violent until he’s pushed too far. On June 4, 2004, Marvin Heemeyer--a businessman and an Air Force veteran--started up his Komatsu D355A tractor. Prior to the date, Heemeyer spent countless hours building a virtually impenetrable concrete-and-steel shell around the top of the tractor. After firing up the mammoth machine, Heemeyer crashed and smashed his way through the town of Granby, Colorado. He destroyed numerous vehicles and buildings, including the Granby town hall, and fired a 50 caliber rifle at both the police and some very large propane tanks. Many years after the fateful events in Granby have faded from the public conscious, Paul Solet (Grace) revisits the killdozer incident in a fantastic documentary called Tread. Based on a non-fiction book by Patrick Brower, Tread is a substantive, visually rich doc with...

Exclusive: Chaos Walking director Doug Liman has joined upcoming documentary Tread, about the Colorado welder who rampaged through his local town in a weaponized bulldozer. Liman will produce the Paul Solet-directed (Grace) movie alongside Undefeated producer Glen Zipper and Sean Stuart, producer on Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming Muhammad Ali documentary for HBO. Great Point Media will launch the project in Cannes next month. CAA reps U.S.
The project charts the story of Marvin John Heemeyer, the American welder who in 2004 became known for his rampage with a modified bulldozer. Outraged over zoning disputes, he armored a Komatsu D355A bulldozer with layers of steel and concrete and used it to demolish the town hall, the former mayor’s house, and other buildings in Granby, Colorado. The rampage ended when the bulldozer got stuck in the basement of a Gambles store he was in the process of destroying. Heemeyer...

Plot: Three low-level criminals (Adrien Brody, John Malkovich & Rory Culkin) find themselves trapped in a warehouse with a deadly fight dog named De Niro. If life were more like the movies, criminals wouldn't be committing robberies, they'd be hosting dinner parties. Although it's doubtful that prison cafeterias are a hotbed of witty banter, crime films always seem to feature crooks who love to chat as much as they break the law. The latest example is writer/director Paul Solet's new thriller Bullet Head, in which a trio of career criminals are trapped in a warehouse by a vicious attack dog and while away the time by exchanging ironic stories from their past. They're also eventually pursued by a ruthless but voluble gangster who wields an...

One of the top films I’m looking forward to checking out asap is director Paul Solet’s thriller Bullet Head starring Adrien Brody, Antonio Banderas, and John Malkovich. As many a clever writer has already pointed out, the film looks to be a cross between Reservoir Dogs and, you know, an actual f*cking dog. And a mean […]

Adrien Brody and John Malkovich co-star in funky crime thriller titled Bullet Head, from writer/director Paul Solet. The movie is about three career criminals who end up stuck inside a warehouse after finding money inside. A vicious dog keeps them trapped inside the building. We're getting our first look at the trailer for the movie that stars Brody and Malkovich, along with Antonio Banderas, Ori Pfeffer, Alexandra Dinu, Velizar Binev, Owen Davis, and Cristina Segovia.
The movie seems to have a decent cast, but will it be a decent movie? You be the judge:...

"It's all there. - the motherload." Saban Films has debuted the first official trailer for a funky crime thriller titled Bullet Head, from writer/director Paul Solet. The film is about three career criminals who end up trapped inside a warehouse together, after finding money inside. A deranged dog keeps them stuck in the building. Starring Adrien Brody and John Malkovich, along with Antonio Banderas, Ori Pfeffer, Alexandra Dinu, Velizar Binev, Owen Davis, and Cristina Segovia. This seems like it could be a cool film, but I'm not too sure this one pulled that off, though I am curious at least. You may want to take a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Paul Solet's Bullet Head, direct from YouTube: A highly-stylized crime story reminiscent of Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs. As three career criminals find themselves trapped in a warehouse with the law closing in and an even worse threat waiting inside,...

If you have arachnophobia, you might need to take a deep pull from an inhaler after watching the trailer for Itsy Bitsy, an upcoming horror film in which a single mother and her children are stalked by a spider that's large enough to haunt your dreams for life, but still compact enough to fit in your bathtub or under your bed... As impressive as the trailer for Itsy Bitsy is, the film still needs help from horror fans to make it across the cinematic finish line in post-production, and director Micah Gallo has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help bring his creature feature to the big screen.
I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Gallo about his new character-centric thriller, and he discussed teaming up with Daily Dead contributor Jason Alvino and Bryan Dick to write the screenplay, filming the movie in sections, depicting the spider through painstaking practical effects,...

Featuring arguably the most beloved zombie ever put to film, George A. Romero's Day of the Dead is a seminal standout in the horror genre that has grown a diehard fanbase in the thirty-plus years since its release. New takes on Romero's groundbreaking 1985 film were featured in 2005's Day of the Dead 2: Contagium and 2008's Day of the Dead, and now Saban Films has acquired the Us rights to Millennium Media's new Day of the Dead reimagining, with a release expected late this year:

With a November 14 production start looming large, Reservoir Dogs-esque thriller Unchained has cast three A-listers in Adrien Brody, John Malkovich and Antonio Banderas.
Word comes by way of Deadline, revealing that the trio are on board to play career criminals that fast become their own worst enemies during a routine gig. Upon scoping out a warehouse, their characters eventually become trapped in the cavernous building with only an attack dog called DeNiro for company. The law is closing in, too, and Unchained is said to feature a series of narrative vignettes designed to explore “love, fear and conditioning and all the wrong turns that have put them in the dog house, fighting for their lives” Writer-director Paul Solet (Grace) will direct from his own script, with Yariv Lerner, Les Weldon, Milos Djukelic and Rick Benattar headlining the jam-packed roster of producers.

I’ve heard 2015 described as a bad year for horror, but that hasn’t been my experience. Between seeing a bunch of movies I really enjoyed (and will continue to enjoy for years to come) and the horror I’ve enjoyed through other outlets, I’ve been a happy genre fan this year. Here are some of my highlights:
We Are Still Here: Writer/director Ted Geoghegan’s debut feature may lack some of the nuance and technical polish of some other movies on this list, but no other horror movie has stuck with me as much this year. I love the wintery atmosphere, I love the loooong the film builds, I love the way that ghosts are depicted not as spooky things that float around and slam doors but instead are angry and vicious and have the immediacy of zombies. Most of all I love the way that...

Over the past year I reviewed a lot of indie horror films, some of them really good, some of them just Ok, and some of them really, really bad. The following isn't exactly a best of the year list, because I haven't watched every single film that was released, played at a film festival, or completed filming this year. Rather, these are the best movies that I reviewed for MoreHorror.com in 2015, and are all movies that I can recommend without hesitation.
Mania is directed by Jessica Cameron and stars Ellie Church. Olalla is written and directed by Amy Hesketh and stars Amy Hesketh, Jac Avila, Mila Joya, and Erix Antoine. Headless is directed by Arthur Cullipher, written by Nathan Erdel, and stars Shane Beasley, Kelsey Carlisle, Dave parker and Ellie Church. Spring is directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead and written by Justin Benson,...

The best of the bunch in this anthology of vaguely interconnected shorts are the outrageous and uproarious genre pastiches “Friday the 31st” and “Bad Seed.” I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not impressed by most movies labeled “horror”
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Most horror movies don’t usually do much for me — I tend not to find gore frightening — and the ones that are supposed to be funny typically do even less: I tend not to find gore funny, either. But the little packages of horror and horror comedy that make up the new anthology Tales of Halloween offer among them a few gems that made me laugh out loud or shiver with their creepy atmosphere.
The ten stories here are vaguely interconnected: they’re meant to be occurring in the same Los Angeles neighborhood on the same Halloween night,...

A good comedy can make people laugh until it hurts and a great drama can reduce an audience to tears, but nothing affects movies goers as profoundly as a terrifying horror story. The experience of watching a horror movie taps into the viewer’s most primal instincts, causing physical reactions like trembling, screaming and leaping out of one’s seat. Everyone has experienced at least one film that left them leering at dark corners and afraid to go to sleep. Horror stories and the anthology format are the perfect match. Anthologies allow for several features over the course of a single film, and each one can frighten,...
