65, the “Adam Driver vs. dinosaurs” movie from the writing and directing duo of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, didn’t have great success at the box office, but Beck and Woods aren’t letting that disappointment slow them down. They’re about to go into production on a new horror project called Heretic, which is set up at A24 – and The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Hugh Grant is in talks to star in the film!
Beck and Woods have written the script for the film. Details are scarce, but apparently the story has something to do with two missionaries that attempt to convert a dangerous man. There’s no word on who Grant would be playing this scenario, but it would be very cool to see him take on the role of the dangerous man. He has previously said that he finds villain roles to be “more fun” to play.

Rob Savage’s The Boogeyman terrified King himself who even labelled it “extraordinary”. While the original story has been reimagined many times, often in undelightful manners, Rob’s version seems to be taking the world by storm. In the first 5-10 minutes of the film, it feels like we’re following Stephen’s story pretty accurately but then the tables take a very distinct turn. Of course, if the film had to be based solely on the source material, it would’ve been a really short one! The popcorn horror has a significant amount of psychological elements that make it more emotionally effective. This is definitely a big step forward for Rob, who began his impressive career with a found footage horror called Host. With a massive expansion of the original story, writers Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman along with Rob switch the lens to the psychiatrist Will Harper...

Step into the shadows in The Boogeyman (2023), a spine-tingling horror film based on the short story by the legendary Stephen King. Directed by Rob Savage and written by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman, this film takes audiences on a chilling journey that explores the depths of fear and the resilience of the human spirit.
The Boogeyman follows troubled high school student Sadie Harper, and her precocious younger sister, Sawyer, still grappling with the recent loss of their mother. Their father, Will, a therapist dealing with his own intense pain, provides little comfort and closes himself off to the girls emotionally. Little do they know that their lives are about to take a sinister turn when a desperate patient seeking help unwittingly unleashes a terrifying supernatural entity that just so happens to prey on families and feed on their suffering. Talk about unlucky.

The following contains major spoilers for The Boogeyman (2023).
Early Stephen King short stories have a particular kind of grit. Often called Vintage King, the twenty dark tales in the author’s first collection, Night Shift, vary wildly in subject matter and tone but nearly all convey a distinct nihilism and end with a shocking stinger or devastating twist. When adapting these nasty nightmares for the big screen, many directors amplify the unapologetic cruelty while others take the edge off of bleak endings by adding a more uplifting tone or reversing the cynical message with an outright happy ending.
Rob Savage’s 2023 adaptation of “The Boogeyman” falls somewhere in between. Working from a script co-written by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman, Savage maintains the story’s morbid tone by expanding the mental health element of the narrative, but presents a more hopeful ending by centering the story on the...

From the mind of Stephen King, 20th Century Studios and 21 Laps’ The Boogeyman was unleashed in theaters this past weekend, debuting in the #3 spot on the domestic charts.
Here in the United States, The Boogeyman managed to scare up a $12.3 million debut weekend at the box office, while the film’s current worldwide total is $20 million.
The reported production budget for this latest Stephen King horror movie was $35 million, which means it has to reach roughly $100 million to hit the point of profitability. You may recall that The Boogeyman was originally scheduled to go straight-to-streaming on Hulu, however, so Disney is likely quite happy with the film’s $20 million box office haul this past weekend.

Many of Stephen King’s horror works, including novels and short stories, have turned into movie adaptations. Some were highly successful, namely the It two-parter. Some others, such as Thinner and The Night Flier, were straight-out fiascos. Stephen King’s short story The Boogeyman is about a man named Lester Billings, who visits a psychiatrist after his children have been killed by the title character. Director Rob Savage’s version of The Boogeyman, which is in theatres now, goes far beyond the story King wrote – but Lester Billings is in the movie, played by David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad). During an interview with Collider, Dastmalchian revealed that he initially turned down the offer to play Billings because he didn’t want to go as far into the darkness as the character required.
Dastmalchian said, “I read (the script) and I said, ‘Absolutely not. No interest in portraying Lester Billings. I don’t care to go there. I’ve done too much stuff in the darkness. I need a break, and I can’t do it.’ And then (producer Dan Cohen) is many things, a gifted producer, a wonderful human being,...

Stars: Chris Messina, Sophie Thatcher, David Dastmalchian, Vivien Lyra Blair, LisaGay Hamilton, Madison Hu, Maddie Nichols, Marin Ireland | Written by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, Mark Heyman | Directed by Rob Savage
Host director Rob Savage makes his mainstream Hollywood debut The Boogeyman, a loose adaptation of a Stephen King short story from the co-writers of A Quiet Place. As such, it delivers some effective scares and is elevated by a trio of terrific performances, though the story itself ultimately feels a little derivative.
Yellowjackets star Sophie Thatcher plays Sadie Harper, a teenager whose family – younger sister Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair) and therapist father Will (Chris Messina) – are still grieving the tragic loss of her mother in a recent car accident. Their lives are swiftly upended when a strange man (David Dastmalchian) seemingly commits suicide in their house, after relating a dark tale to Will about a shadow monster that killed his children.

This post contains spoilers for "The Boogeyman."
Film adaptations of Stephen King stories have been on a somewhat steady drip since the mid-1970s, but after the immense box office success of "It" in 2017, the spigot has fully opened. "The Boogeyman," the first of 2023's two planned King movies ("Salem's Lot" is slated for release later in the year), is in theaters now, and it's based on a short story that was first published in 1973.
Several of King's short stories or novellas have been adapted for the screen before, of course, with "The Shawshank Redemption" probably being the most famous, but "The Boogeyman" short story is incredibly barebones. So how did director Rob Savage and writers Mark Heyman and Scott Beck & Bryan Woods expand it into a full-fledged feature? Here are the key differences between the short story and the movie version of this unsettling tale.

Vivien Lyra Blair played a child version of the iconic Star Wars character Princess Leia Organa in the six episode Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, and now she has a prominent role in the Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman, which reaches theatres tomorrow, June 2nd. You shouldn’t expect to see Blair wielding a lightsaber in the film – but during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Rob Savage revealed that her character did carry a lightsaber around in the script… but Star Wars owners Disney didn’t want them to put a lightsaber in the movie.

Watch out. “The Boogeyman” is here.
Based on the short story by Stephen King (originally published in a 1973 issue of Playboy competitor Cavalier and collected in King’s 1978 anthology “Night Shift”), the slender story was first adapted by “A Quiet Place” writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods in 2018 for 20th Century Fox.
When Disney acquired the company in 2019, development was canceled, only to be revived in late 2021. That’s when Akeela Cooper (“Malignant”) and Mark Heyman (“Black Swan”) also took a crack at the story and Rob Savage, who had made a splash during the pandemic with his low budget horror film “Host,” was brought on as director.
The resulting film is very different from the King story, following a young girl (“Yellowjackets” breakout Sophie Thatcher) and her family (including psychiatrist dad Chris Messina and younger sister Vivien Lyra Blair) as they death both with the recent death of their...

The Boogeyman, directed by Rob Savage (Host) with a screenplay by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place, 65) and Mark Heyman (Black Swan), draws from Stephen King‘s 1973 short story of the same title.
Stephen King’s short takes place in a psychiatrist’s office and sees Dr. Harper engaged with patient Lester Billings in a haunting session that unpacks the mysterious deaths of Lester’s three children. Feature film The Boogeyman uses the short story as the inciting event that brings the malevolent entity that plagued Billings’ home into Dr. Harper’s.
In the film, Chris Messina (Birds of Prey, Devil) assumes the role of Dr. Will Harper, a psychiatrist struggling to help his family through their collective grief, when Lester Billings (David Dastmalchian) arrives at his home office for aid. This pivotal introductory scene establishes Will Harper, the lore, and its ties to King’s source material.

In 2005, screenwriter and author Blake Snyder coined the term “save the cat” when referring to the beat in a story—usually very early on—in which a protagonist does something so admirable it instantly engenders audience sympathy and trust. Think Aladdin giving his only loaf of bread to two street urchins in the Disney movie, or Indiana Jones saving Alfred Molina from spiders, even after Molina’s buddy already betrayed him moments earlier, in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
While watching the opening moments of The Boogeyman, this concept popped into my head, as did the realization that there’s a reversal of it. Consider: Audiences as of late have been inundated with horror movies which want you to know immediately they’re playing for keeps, and their titular monster is the genuine thing. Hence the scene where a baby is stolen and sacrificed to the Devil in The Witch...

June kicks off this weekend with another anticipated sequel, this one being “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” continuing on from the Oscar-winning animated feature from 2018. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
It was pretty apparent when Sony’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” managed to gross $190 million domestically and roughly the same amount overseas, before winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, that the filmmakers would try to continue the story of Miles Morales, as voiced by Shameik Moore. “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” continues Miles’ story as he reunites with Gwen Stacy (voiced by Halle Steinfeld) and the Jake Johnson-voiced “Peter B. Parker.” The sequel also introduces Oscar Isaac voicing Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099, and Issa Rae voicing Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman, and it was just announced that Andy Samberg is voicing Ben Reilly aka Scarlet Spider with Karan Soni voicing Spider-Man India and Amandla Stenberg also voicing a role.

If the title feels familiar you would not be wrong. The word “boogeyman” has been the subject of numerous movies all using the same moniker, at least ten on iMDB database before I stopped counting, but all of them dated post 1973 when the horror master Stephen King first published his 8-page short story in a magazine, followed five years later by its inclusion in one of his classic short story collections, “Night Shift”. So in one form or another this now 50 year old tale has become shorthand for lots of Hollywood concoctions that had nothing to do with it, but hey a good title is a good title.
King’s “The Boogeyman” was basically a two hander between a disturbed patient and his therapist who indeed turned out to be his boogeyman. It was actually shot as a short by some entertprising filmmakers in 2012, but clearly there was not enough...

Above all else, The Boogeyman director Rob Savage wanted what every filmmaker longs for when adapting the work of Stephen King: his blessing. Fortunately, Savage received that and a whole lot more.
Based on King’s short story that was first published in 1973, The Boogeyman changes things up by focusing on the Harper family, as Will (Chris Messina), a therapist by trade, won’t connect with his children, Sadie (Sophie Thatcher) and Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair), in the wake of their mother’s death. The family’s disconnection then opens the door to a mysterious creature that feeds off of grief.
Written by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods and Mark Heyman, the horror movie, which was originally meant to be a Hulu release, wowed test audiences before its VFX were even finished, resulting in a theatrical release. Eventually, it even met the approval of King himself during his own screening in Maine.

The titular creature is grotesque and frightening, and the jump scares are plentiful in 20th Century Studios’ The Boogeyman. Based on a Stephen King short story, The Boogeyman stirs up unsettling memories of nights spent wondering if that shadow on the wall is about to spring to life. Is that creaking noise just the house settling, or is something ever so slowly creeping toward the bed in the cover of darkness?
Parents always deny the existence of closet monsters and claim that there’s nothing scary under the bed unless you consider dust bunnies sinister. However, the sisters in The Boogeyman are faced with a different reality – that bump in the night is a real threat that enjoys toying with its prey before finally killing them.

One of the summer's biggest horror movies is on the horizon in the form of "The Boogeyman," which is adapted from the Stephen King story of the same name. It hails from director Rob Savage, who made waves a few years ago with his made-for-nothing found footage horror flick "Host" during the pandemic. Now, Savage is back taking on source material from a master of the genre, and it sounds like he did a damn good job of translating the material (read our review here). The reveal of the monster at the center of this story actually scared the s*** out of audiences in early screenings to such a strong degree that they actually had to re-edit the movie to accommodate the reaction.
The filmmaker recently spoke with Empire in anticipation of the film's theatrical release this weekend. Savage explained that the reveal of the titular Boogeyman worked like gangbusters in test screenings.

British director Rob Savage captured lockdown perfectly in 2020 with his Zoom-based horror, Host. And now that we’re allowed out of the house again, he’s back to scare your pants off with The Boogeyman, an adaptation of the Stephen King short story first published in 1973.
“I remember reading the short story when I was a kid, and it scared the fuck out of me,” Savage tells Den of Geek magazine. “And so when I got an email in my inbox that they were looking for somebody to work on an adaptation of it, that immediately made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up because I thought there was something potentially brilliant there.”

Review: While all of the headlines out of this year’s CinemaCon were about Warner Bros showing The Flash to the assembled press and exhibitors, it wasn’t the only screening of a movie the studios were hot on. Disney used the event to give us all a look at The Boogeyman, a horror flick by director Rob Savage, which was initially set for Hulu. The movie turned out so well and was received so positively at test screenings the studio pivoted to a theatrical release, given how well recent movies that nearly went to streaming have done, including Smile and the studio’s own Barbarian.

There are few fears more universal than one of a monster under the bed or in our closet, and few filmmaking techniques more viscerally effective than the jump scare. These tropes collide — effectively, if without much originality — in “The Boogeyman,” a loose adaptation of Stephen King’s 1973 short story of the same name. Featuring an eponymous threat seemingly drafted from the same biological blueprint as the extraterrestrials in their breakthrough film “A Quiet Place,” writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods graft the psychological and thematic shorthand of unresolved trauma onto a creature feature, while director Rob Savage (“Dashcam”) papers over the seams between the two with copious style and a bold, clear-eyed lead performance coaxed from “Yellowjackets” star Sophie Thatcher.

The Boogeyman, directed by Rob Savage (Host) with a screenplay by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place, 65) and Mark Heyman (Black Swan), draws from Stephen King‘s 1973 short story of the same title. Rather than presenting a straightforward adaptation of King’s text, however, The Boogeyman uses its narrative as the film’s inciting event, acting as a spiritual sequel. While it never expands the mythology or story in any substantial way, this film adaptation is offset by Savage’s steadfast commitment to scares and a tremendous cast.
Sixteen-year-old Sadie (Sophie Thatcher) and her 10-year-old sister, Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair), struggle in the wake of their mother’s unexpected passing. That their father, therapist Will Harper (Chris Messina), seems emotionally closed off in his grief doesn’t help. Rob Savage's "The Boogeyman," the latest in a long line of Stephen King adaptations, is a solid, sturdy entry in the modern horror canon. Loosely based on King's short story about a terrifying creature that targets a family, this version expands the narrative's scope while still maintaining a contained, personal feel. Several King tropes and themes pop up throughout, all of which are artfully and efficiently folded into the eerie, occasionally unsettling tapestry of tension Savage weaves here.
While there are plenty of jump scares, this likely won't be the scariest thing you see at the movies this year. But for a film that was initially intended to go straight to streaming, "The Boogeyman" could end up being 2023's version of last year's "Smile" — a project that surprises audiences with its effectiveness and outperforms expectations from industry analysts.

One of the more cleverly conceived horror films to harness the constraints of Covid lockdown, Rob Savage’s Host located its horror entirely within the domestic space. The director’s newest film, The Boogeyman, a loose adaptation of Steven King’s 1978 short story, takes a similar approach, having its titular villain function as an extension of the darkest corners in an ordinary suburban home. Except that the film, without the hook of pandemic-induced isolation, feels decidedly more generic and its jump scares more traditional, as they’re not filtered through the grainy, fragmented lens of various Zoom chat boxes.
Like the traditional form of the mythical being, the Boogeyman here often hides in closets and underneath beds. But in a twist that’s in line with so much contemporary horror, it also specifically targets “the hurt and vulnerable.” In this case, it’s 10-year-old Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair) and her 16-year-old sister,...

One day in the distant future, horror fans are going to have a rude awakening. Eventually, every single idea that Stephen King has ever committed to the page is going to be adapted into a film or television series; it's inevitable. But until that sad day comes, let's all continue to focus on what spooky King property is coming down the pipeline next.
The sparse but undeniably creepy short story "The Boogeyman" from the "Night Shift" collection is being adapted by director Rob Savage from a script by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, scribes for "A Quiet Place". Originally, the movie was set to premiere on Hulu this year until a well-received test screening and a winning endorsement from King himself convinced Disney's 20th Century Studios to release the film theatrically.

The next time something goes bump in the night and you feel the temptation to dismiss it as nothing ... maybe consider the possibility that you're stuck in a terrifying Stephen King short story, instead. The acclaimed horror author has been able to enjoy a resurgence of adaptations of his work in recent years on both the big and small screen, from the immensely successful "It" movies to the supposedly "un-filmable" production of "Dark Tower." But unlike most other high-profile translations of King's full-length novels, the upcoming "The Boogeyman" is instead taking its cues from one minor work out of a collection of short stories featured in 1978's "Night Shift."
With a name like Rob Savage attached to direct from a script credited to Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman, there's nothing "minor" about this next movie. Once initially destined for an unceremonious, straight-to-streaming release on Hulu, one pivotal test...

Rob Savage's "The Boogeyman" was once an under-the-radar, feature-length adaptation of a minor Stephen King short story from the author's "Night Shift" collection. Made for the Disney-owned 20th Century Studios, the film was slated to premiere on Hulu at some point in 2023. But a well-received test screening in December 2022 changed everything. "The Boogeyman" may be an amorphous concept, but the...
