‘Where are all the fat people?’ Mark and Larry on their ‘in shape’ competitors on ‘The Amazing Race’

Welcome to Reality Derby, our weekly deep dive into all things reality TV, hosted by Gold Derby senior editors Marcus James Dixon and Denton Davidson.
Joining us this week are Mark Crawford and Larry Graham, the first two eliminated contestants from The Amazing Race Season 37. (Our interview begins at the 27:00 mark in the video above.) The best friends from Tennessee tell us all about their audition process, how dancing and singing were their "Achilles' heel," and whether it pays to be younger or older on this specific competition series.
Besides "getting off the airplane after a 14-hour flight," Larry's favorite part of The Amazing Race is "just seeing how beautiful Hong Kong was. It's the cleanest place I've ever been in my life. I mean, there's not even a cigarette butt on the ground." The friends didn't want to be in "such a rush" that they didn't "smell the roses,...

Warning: The following story contains spoilers about the Season 37 premiere of The Amazing Race.
The Amazing Race has hit a Fork in the Road. Or rather, the racers did. Wednesday's Season 37 premiere introduced the Fork in the Road, a new twist as part of the "Season of Surprises," which will see a different twist — new and old — every episode.
The Fork in the Road forced the 14 teams, racing in Hong Kong, to pick one of two tasks, Dance or Sing. It’s kind of like a Detour except for one big difference: It's a forced even split — max seven teams per path — to create two parallel races to the Pit Stop, where the last team from each route was eliminated.
And it was a tale of two routes. Dance, which filled up first, featured a three-team race to the Pit Stop, and BFFs Mark Crawford and Larry Graham were eliminated.

The changing nature of the documentary business has seen an influx of celebrities (and their representatives) producing their own series and films over the last few years.
Ezra Edelman, the Oscar-winning director of ESPN’s O.J: Made In America, is warning that viewers are being served “slop” with this approach.
It comes after Netflix scrapped his nine-hour, six-part series about Prince and the musician’s estate will now “develop and produce a new documentary featuring exclusive content from Prince’s archive”.
“Right now, we live in a culture and in a documentary universe, and in some ways in a journalistic universe, where the subject gets to dictate who they are to everybody. And that is not the way that the Fourth Estate was set up. So, my issue is that in trading for access, you now have a lot of companies and filmmakers making deals with the subject, sanitizing their story and or their image,...

“The Amazing Race” just got bigger. For the CBS reality hit’s Season 37, for the first time it will kick off with 14 teams — having previously expanded to 13 teams the past two seasons.
The expansion to 14 teams comes as part of what CBS is dubbing a “season of surprises” for “The Amazing Race,” which “game-changing twists” each episode. Besides the show’s staple “fast foward” and “U-turn” game play, other elements will make a comeback. And new this season will be a “fork in the road,” as experienced during the very first leg in Hong Kong. According to the description, “when teams arrive at the fork in the road, they will have to choose which direction and route they want to take to the pit stop, creating two parallel races where two teams will be eliminated.”

Sly Stone, founder, frontman and namesake of Sly and the Family Stone, has deserved to be the subject of a documentary since the heyday of his eponymous, chart-topping, mixed-gender, racially integrated 1960s and ‘70s funk band. After more than 30 years out of the spotlight — and another 10 in which his personal and legal troubles sadly dominated more headlines than his music — Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s “Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius)” aims to rightfully contextualize his artistic legacy.
The film bows at Sundance Jan. 23.
Appropriately, the documentarian and fellow musician chronicles Stone’s musical achievements, the cultural barriers he broke and the ups and downs of his tumultuous private life. But Questlove unexpectedly leans heavier on his title’s parenthetical addendum in order to illuminate some deeper truths about the challenges of stardom (especially for Black artists) that may have started with Stone, but which still persist today.

Bootsy Collins has released a new video for “Want Me 2 Stay” — his take on Sly and the Family Stone’s 1973 hit “If You Want Me to Stay” — featuring the song’s original bassist, Larry Graham, as well as Branford Marsalis and Uché Ndubizu.
The simple clip puts the song front-and-center, with Collins, Graham, Uché, and horn player Brennan Johns all performing in front of an array of psychedelic backgrounds (Marsalis does not appear in the clip). The scenery behind Uché remains comparatively calm, but that only heightens the emphasis on his stellar vocals.

Prince's conversion to the Jehovah's Witness religion actually started, in a roundabout way, with Sly & the Family Stone. Well, that's not entirely accurate: It started with Graham Central Station, the funk group started by Sly and the Family Stone bassist Larry Graham after his tenure in that band. "I was on tour with Sinbad, Graham Central Station, Earth Wind & Fire and Teena Marie," Graham explained in 2013. "We did a show in Tennessee and we were playing the amphitheater and Prince was playing the big arena there in Nashville. He heard I was in town and invited me to one of his famous after-shows.

In with a whisper. Out with a bang. Thousands of Prince fans who attended the third and final show of his recent Chicago engagement were not quite sure what they were in for. After a not-so-regal start with Monday's show that was reportedly riddled with sound problems, technical issues, and timing turmoil, the word was not good. Tuesday's show, however, contained all of the elements one would expect from the veteran entertainer, who rebounded nicely for night two. When legions of fans poured into United Center for night three, many wondered if the positive momentum would continue. As it turns out, it did. And he started with a little Controversy. The song that is. The energy level was high and Prince was feeling it. "Hello, my name is Prince," he announced. Within minutes fans were on their feet as "His Purple Highness" delivered a memorable (and youthful sounding) medley of hits including "Let's Go Crazy,...

In the midst of music's most decadent eras during the '70s and '80s, Nile Rodgers was at the forefront of pop music. With his dynamic ear for producing top-ten records and with his finger on the pulse of American culture, Rodgers has not only had multiplatinum success, but he has also redefined pop music as we know it today.
Crafting hits for the likes of Diana Ross ("I'm Coming Out"), Madonna ("Like A Virgin"), Chic ("Good Times"), David Bowie ("China Girl"), Mick Jagger ("She's The Boss") and Grace Jones ("Inside Story"), among countless others, Rodgers had plenty of experience to draw upon for his new autobiography, "Le Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco, and Destiny." Four and a half years in the making, the personal memoir details the former Honeydrippers and Chic member's rise to stardom and the many hurdles that he faced. It wasn't until...

Religious singer Prince often dons a disguise when he embarks on door-to-door preaching campaigns in a bid to stop fans recognizing him. The "Purple Rain" hitmaker famously became a Jehovah's Witness in 2001, and admits he often "freaked out" householders when he arrived on their doorstep to talk about his faith.
But Prince now changes his appearance so his superstar status is not detected. He tells Britain's Daily Mirror, "Sometimes people act surprised but mostly they're really cool about it... My hair is capable of doing a lot of different things. I don't always look like this."
And the star's mentor, former Sly & The Family Stone star Larry Graham, admits Prince has become so interested in the word of God, he can pore over details of the Bible for up to eight hours every day. He says, "Prince is a spiritual man. Sometimes we study for hours - six, seven, eight hours a day.

Last night, I was having a conversation with commenter Ian over text message. I got a new phone a couple weeks ago, and have been waging a battle against its predictive text feature that seems intent on censoring me at every foul-mouth turn. Anyway, last night I went to type "boobs" and predictive text auto-corrected it to "noonday" and I didn't notice it before the text went out. The resulting message ended up sounding like something the saucy aunt in a Jane Austen novel would say, like "Well, the ball was going marvelously until I dropped a crumpet down my noonday and Lord Nosewhistle tried to fish it out!" so I'm now going to try and make this catch on. The ideal usage would be a kind of catch-all term for both boobs and cleavage, but adapt it to your purposes as you see fit. Because it amuses me. Here's...
