Few scripted shows excel at causing your blood pressure to sky-rocket like "The Bear." Christopher Storer's acclaimed series centers on the employees of a Chicago-based eatery, which is itself an inherently high-stress environment. Adding to the discomfort, the show pulls you deeply into its characters' perspectives, using invasive close-ups and rapid-fire edits to place you in their headspace and make their underlying anxieties all the more palpable. Other times, the series holds for vast periods without cutting, which makes you sit with its leads as they quietly work through their feelings. That or scramble for dear life like in the mostly one-shot season 1 episode "Review."
Miraculously, "The Bear" managed to top that episode for sheer emotional turbulence with the extra-long season 2 installment "Fishes." Set about five years before the rest of the season, "Fishes" follows series protagonist Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) as he returns home from a...

There’s still a few months until Season 3 of The Bear debuts, but Disney is holding audiences over with a clip from the upcoming installment.
The clip, revealed during Disney’s shareholder meeting on Wednesday, features Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) getting a surprise from two of his employees, Neil and Ted Fak (Matty Matheson and Ricky Staffieri).
After a bit of shouting, the pair finally get Carmy into the restaurant’s back office to see they’ve posted photos of every major food critic on the wall. Likely so that all the employees will know as soon as one of them steps foot inside the establishment.

The Poor Things star stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! and explained that while helming the episode, he and Boyce were able to spend a day working at Noma, which was voted the best restaurant in the world every year from 2010-12 and then again in 2014.

To date, only three programs throughout television history have swept the top seven Primetime Emmys categories for series, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, writing and directing. The lucky three are: miniseries “Angels in America” (2004), comedy series “Schitt’s Creek” (2020) and drama series “The Crown” (2021). At the upcoming 2024 Emmys, “The Bear” is hoping to join this esteemed list — and it’s all thanks to a savvy category switcheroo from one of its fan-fave stars.
Recently the FX dramedy about a Chicago beef restaurant claimed six of the top seven Primetime Emmys for its first season: comedy series, lead actor Jeremy Allen White as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, supporting actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach as restaurant manager Richard “Richie” Jerimovich, supporting actress Ayo Edebiri as sous-chef Sydney Adamu, and both writing and directing for Christopher Storer. “The Bear” was not eligible in the lead actress category, so it couldn’t win there and complete the sweep.

The cast behind Modern Family gathered on Saturday to present the prize for best comedy ensemble to the stars of The Bear at the 2024 SAG Awards.
Modern Family alums Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Ed O’Neill, Sofia Vergara, Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson reminisced about their ABC show having won this category four previous times. “This really brings back memories,” said Burrell. After Vergara mentioned the popularity of her Netflix series Griselda, Stonestreet quipped, “Jesse, pay up. I told you she’d mention it in the first 10 seconds.”
Stonestreet, a Kansas native and longtime high-profile fan of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, went on to brag about his friendship with the team’s star tight end, Travis Kelce, who is currently dating Taylor Swift. “Hey, wow, I know Travis Kelce,” Stonestreet said. “I can FaceTime him right now.”

“The Bear” will return for its third season on FX on Hulu this June.
FX chairman John Landgraf announced the news during the network’s Television Critics Association (TCA) presentation on Friday, February 9, adding that like the prior seasons, all episodes will be available at once rather than be released week-to-week.
But if you want any more details than that, Landgraf didn’t have them. Asked if there will be more guest stars like in the “Fishes” episode that featured Jamie Lee Curtis, Bob Odenkirk, John Mulaney, Gillian Jacobs, Sarah Paulson, and Jon Bernthal, Landgraf said he’ll be waiting to see what creator Christopher Storer comes up with just like everyone else.
“Unfortunately, I can’t. I was surprised as you were when the Christmas episode came through the door,” he said (via Variety).
“The Bear” has dominated the awards season and been one of FX’s biggest recent hits.

Some people just have no sense of humor.
After Monday’s 75th Emmy Awards awarded basically three series — “Succession,” “The Bear,” and “Beef” — some TV fans were left feeling somewhere between robbed and confounded.
A number of observers simply didn’t dig the repetition; “Succession” and “Beef” each won eight Emmys, including the Creative Arts awards the weekend prior to the primetime show, and “The Bear” took home 10. Rote results, sure, but they were probably three of the best five shows of the eligibility window: June 1, 2022-May 31, 2023.
If that feels like a long time ago, that’s because it was. Monday’s Emmy Awards were supposed to air in September 2023, but were delayed by the writers’ and actors’ strikes.
Some of the loudest opposition to Monday’s Emmys results was simply about the category that “The Bear” dominated: comedy. The resistance has a point — but that doesn’t make them right.

Inside MPTF’s Evening Before Benefit with Stars of ‘Succession,’ ‘Ted Lasso’ and ‘Abbott Elementary’
Who doesn’t love a group photo packed with big-name actors?
A slew of stars came together to say cheese and help raise north of $2.5 million in West Hollywood on Saturday night at the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s 17th annual Evening Before benefit. Co-chaired by Quinta Brunson and Bob Odenkirk, the annual event takes place ahead of the Emmy Awards, and this weekend’s installment shifted to the new year to follow the TV Academy’s celebration due to the dual strikes last summer.
“We’ve had quite a year, and this organization and its fundraiser has helped many weather the storm,” said Brunson. Added Odenkirk, “I’m thrilled to be a co-chair of MPTF’s Evening Before benefit with Quinta. MPTF really stepped up during a very challenging year to support the entertainment community, and I’m proud to be a part of a fundraiser that will help to sustain that vital support.

Heading into the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday, January 7, “Succession” was the show to beat as it scored a record nine nominations — more than any other television show in history. Some of the other top nominees on the TV side were “The Bear” and “Only Murders in the Building” with five noms apiece, and “The Crown” with four bids. But which shows ended up being the big winners during the three-hour ceremony?
Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress was the first TV category handed out this year, and it went to Ali Wong (“Beef”), who is also predicted to prevail at next week’s Emmys. She beat out Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones & the Six”), Brie Larson (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Elizabeth Olson (“Love and Death”), Juno Temple (“Fargo”) and Rachel Weisz (“Dead Ringers”).

Currently at Gold Derby, seven of our 10 Experts from major media outlets predict that Season 2 of “The Bear” will sweep the comedy races at the 2024 Golden Globes. These savvy prognosticators have it cooking up wins for Best Comedy Series, Jeremy Allen White as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto for Best Comedy Actor and Ayo Edebiri as Sydney Adamu for Best Comedy Actress. If they’re right, that would put “The Bear” on the same exotic menu as “30 Rock” (with leads Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin) and “Roseanne” (with leads Roseanne Barr and John Goodman), both of which claimed the comedy trifecta in 2009 and 1993, respectively.
The seven Experts predicting the FX show to sweep the top three comedy races are: Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Eric Deggans (NPR), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV). Last year, “The Bear” earned two Golden Globe nominations and won one, Best TV Comedy/Musical Actor for Jeremy Allen White. This year, it received five bids and could win all five, but it’s projected to win three, which would be quite the notable achievement as well. It’s expected to win the three comedy categories — series, lead actor again for White and lead actress for Ayo Edebiri — which would make it the first show to complete the comedy hat trick since “30 Rock” 15 years ago.
Just how rare is this in comedy? You have to back to 1993 for the next instance with “Roseanne.” “The Bear” lost the series award last year to “Abbott Elementary,” which won three prizes from five bids, but the ABC sitcom underperformed this year and swapped nomination hauls with “The Bear,” going down to two. It’s in fourth place in the odds, just ahead of another former champ,...

Year after year, TV fans continue to be irked when the Golden Globes combine supporting performances from comedies, dramas, limited series and TV movies altogether. Looking through the list of past winners in the female category, you can clearly see there’s a bias toward rewarding dramatic roles over comedic ones. In fact, it’s been a whopping 13 years since a supporting actress from a comedy series prevailed: Jane Lynch (“Glee”). Is there a comedy curse at the Golden Globes? If so, it could finally end this year, as Gold Derby predicts Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”) will win the race for Best TV Supporting Actress on Sunday, January 7.
Streep plays Loretta Durkin on the Hulu hit, an out-of-work theater actress who decides to audition for a Broadway play directed by Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) in order to get closer to one of the other characters. Loretta is tailor-made for awards recognition,...

Ayo Edebiri‘s upgrade to lead for Season 2 of “The Bear” has already cooked up some good results. She earned her inaugural Golden Globe nomination in Best TV Comedy/Musical Actress, setting up the FX hit to achieve a rare Globe hat trick: sweeping three comedy categories in the same year.
And “The Bear” is expected to do just that in the early odds, sitting in first place in Best Comedy/Musical Series, Best TV Comedy/Musical Actress for Edebiri and Best TV Comedy/Musical Actor for Jeremy Allen White. The last show to accomplish this was “30 Rock” in 2009. The NBC comedy won its only series Globe then and earned lead acting honors for Tina Fey (her second of two) and Alec Baldwin (his second of three). Prior to this, you have to go all the way back to 1993 for another comedy triple play, when “Roseanne” and stars Roseanne Barr and John Goodman prevailed.

This year, Golden Globes voters bestowed nominations upon more than 100 individual film and TV creatives, including actors, directors, writers, musicians, and even comedians. Most of those who appear on the ballot were widely expected to show up there, but some either slid through without much notice or have not received as much personal publicity as their projects. In order to make sure you didn’t miss any notable inclusions, take a read through our comprehensive breakdown of the year’s undersung contenders.
Often, Best Original Song is a category in which the work is highlighted more than the artist, and that certainly applies to at least part of this year’s six-slot lineup. Every nominated song is, however, attached to one or more household names, with siblings Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell (“What Was I Made For?” from “Barbie”) perhaps standing out the most due to their 2022 victory in this...

The prophecy may now come to pass: There’s a good chance Jeremy Allen White wins a Golden Globe Award for Season 2 of “The Bear,” a week before he wins an Emmy… for Season 1 of “The Bear.” Ditto the show’s Ayo Edibiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
And so goes the most unusual TV awards season ever, where a delayed Primetime Emmys — with its June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023, eligibility window — falls smack into a Globes, Critics’ Choice and guild awards season with a January to December, 2023 time frame.
The Hollywood strikes also may have had an impact on the even more limited-than-usual showing for broadcast networks at the Globes. ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” was the sole broadcast nominee, and even it saw its fortunes drop to just two nods: Best comedy and best female actor in a comedy (Quinta Brunson).
Interestingly, despite the difference in eligibility dates, the Globes’ comedy nominations were...

“Succession” made sure to make history on it’s way out, earning a record-breaking nine nominations at the 2024 Golden Globes for its farewell season. Those final nominations helped HBO score 17 overall, the most of any network at the 81st ceremony; the network netted 16 nominations and its streaming service Max landed one. It won a neck-and-neck race with Netflix, which earned 15 total, with Apple TV+ just missing out on double digits with nine.
In addition to those nine “Succession” nominations, HBO had success with its other drama series “The Last of Us,” which earned three bids. “The Crown,” “Beef,” and “The Diplomat” led the way for Netflix, which also got a boost by dominating the new Stand-Up Comedian on Television category with five bids out of the six total slots. “Ted Lasso,” “The Morning Show,” and “Lessons in Chemistry” all contributed to the Apple TV+ tally.

The Golden Globes have continued their annual tradition of surprising us awards pundits. A whopping 42 individuals reaped their first nominations this year. After a string of wins at recent critics prizes, Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Charles Melton (“May December”) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) have also scored their first-ever Globes noms. Although “The Color Purple” was snubbed in Best Comedy/Musical, it did earn bids for Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks, both first-time nominees this year. See the complete list of first-time nominees at the 2024 Golden Globes below.
Visionary director Yorgos Lanthimos has surprisingly never been nominated for a Globe before, but earns his first bid this year for “Poor Things.” First-time filmmaker Celine Song earned not one, but two Globes nominations for “Past Lives” for both directing and for her screenplay. The Original Song category boasts two major stars amongst its roster of first-timers, including...

Meryl Streep has broken her own record as the most-nominated actor in Golden Globes history.
On Monday morning, the actress was nominated for best performance by a supporting female actor for her role in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, bringing her total nomination count up to 33.
In the category, Streep was nominated alongside Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown), Abby Elliott (The Bear), Christina Ricci (Yellowjackets), J. Smith-Cameron (Succession) and Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso).
In Only Murders, Streep portrayed Loretta Durkin, an actress who starred in Oliver Putnam’s (Martin Short) musical and eventually became his love interest, as they worked together to find season three’s murderers. Showrunner John Hoffman shared Streep’s casting story with The Hollywood Reporter following the most recent finale, and said he hoped the iconic actress will return for season four.
Next on the small screen, Streep makes her debut in Extrapolation‘s second episode,...

The 81st Golden Globe nominations were announced brought and early Monday morning, December 11, and perhaps the biggest surprise was that there were so few surprises in the mix. A majority of the categories in both film and TV went completely according to form, at least in terms of how Gold Derby forecast things.
If there was a true shock, it may have been the inclusion of Finnish actress Alma Pöysti on the list for her film “Fallen Leaves” in Best Comedy/Musical Actress alongside Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), Margot Robbie (“Barbie”), Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Jennifer Lawrence (“No Hard Feelings”) and Natalie Portman (“May December”) and the nomination of Joaquin Phoenix on the Comedy/Musical Actors list for the comedic drama “Beau Is Afraid.”
