Harmony Korine's 2013 film "Spring Breakers" is a time capsule of the early 2010s -- a time when James Franco was still a big-name movie star and Skrillex's brostep bass wobbles soundtracked all of the cool parties in town. It’s been a fascinating four weeks. After spending more than two years consuming Amityville titles in isolation, revisiting four of them with another person (or two since my Horror Queers co-host Trace stopped by for an episode) made for an interesting experiment.

For the final film of Amityville month on Murder Made Fiction, Jenn and I are checking out Franck Khalfoun’s Amityville: The Awakening, the much maligned Dimension release that was shot in 2014 and eventually dumped on VOD in 2017.
The film, starring Bella Thorne and Cameron Monaghan as twin siblings who move into the Amityville house with their mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and younger sister (Mckenna Grace), occupies a strange place in the “franchise” canon.
Unlike most of the other texts, Amityville: The Awakening acknowledges the existence of the other films as films, specifically the 1979 original (listen), the 2005 remake (listen), and the incest-heavy prequel/sequel (listen). Admittedly Khalfoun’s script doesn’t go much further than that, descending into pretty basic/generic ‘Amityville haunting’ territory, but it’s an interesting wrinkle in what was clearly intended to be a theatrical re-launch for the “series.”

I’m a sucker for a good vampire film, whether it features a sexy vampire like Bram Stoker’s Dracula or a nasty one like 30 Days of Night. But one of my personal favorite tales about bloodsuckers is an underrated 2010 release by Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig titled Daybreakers. Boasting an all-star cast and an interesting twist on vampire lore, it didn’t make waves upon initial release. And yet, I still find myself banging the proverbial drum for this film, especially today, because the movie is now streaming for free on Vizio WatchFree+.
Daybreakers takes place in 2019 (ten years in the future upon the film’s initial release) where a plague has transformed a majority of the human population into vampires. But without any humans from which to feed, the vampires are now facing a food crisis. Ethan Hawke plays Edward Dalton, a hematologist working on creating a blood substitute to save humanity.

Set to write and direct the feature adaptation, in his feature debut, is producer David Michaels.

In light of her first children’s book being banned, Julianne Moore took to Instagram to express her shock and disapproval over the Trump administration’s education policies.
“It is a great shock for me to learn that my first book, ‘Freckleface Strawberry,’ has been banned by the Trump Administration from schools run by the Department of Defense,” Moore wrote on Sunday.
A semi-autobiographical story, “Freckleface Strawberry” tells the story of a 7-year-old girl who doesn’t like her freckles. But as the book goes on, she learns to accept them as well as the fact that she’s different “just like everybody else.” “It is a book I wrote for my children and for other kids to remind them that we all struggle, but are united by our humanity and our community,” Moore continued.

Before kids got into Stephen King, Scholastic Book Fairs introduced them to the tween horror maestro: R.L. Stine. The author's best known for his "Goosebumps" books, an anthology series where each book introduced a new horror for some intrepid young protagonist to confront. Werewolves, mud monsters, and Slappy the dummy, the last of whom Stine never understood the fanbase for, all gave us nightmares. But hey, at least we were reading!
"Goosebumps" is far from Stine's only enterprise, as he's also the visionary behind the "Fear Street" and "Mostly Ghostly" books, too. Exclusive: The Weeknd is depicted as a curious toddler by filmmaker Eddie Alcazar in the new stop-motion short film Red Terror, an accompaniment to the song of the same name off his latest album release Hurry Up Tomorrow. The video can be viewed below.
Alcazar created the nightmarish fantasy film concept following a conversation with the multi-Grammy Award-winning singer and actor who requested that “a boy in a haunted forest” be the story’s focal point. From idea to concept to final product took Alcazar about three to four months to complete.
“The creative freedom and time I had working with Abel allowed us to dive deep into raw themes and bold techniques. By blending live action, stop motion, and VFX, we’ve crafted something truly unique—an experience that pushes boundaries while staying rooted in raw emotion,” Alcazar told Deadline on Saturday following the project’s drop.
