Four years ago, before Covid turned everything upside down, a new Asian masterpiece world premiered virtually unnoticed at the Toronto Film Festival. That film was “A Sun,” a multifaceted Taiwanese family saga from director Chung Mong-Hong that seemed to shift and evolve as it unfolded, challenging what audiences thought they knew about the characters. Tucked away in TIFF’s overcrowded (and under-promoted) Contemporary World Cinema section, the film easily slid under the radar.
Toronto programmers weren’t about to make the same mistake with “A Normal Family,” a film of similar force from South Korea, giving it a coveted Gala spot. Director Hur Jin-ho’s complex, complacency-shattering moral study boasts a heightened yet easily relatable premise, and strong potential to play well around the globe. Like “A Sun,” the movie comes roaring out of the gate with a shocker of an opening scene: An aggro jerk in a blood-red Maserati...

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association moved on Monday to throw out a Norwegian reporter’s lawsuit, arguing that she has not been harmed by being denied admission to the organization.
Kjersti Flaa filed the complaint on Aug. 3, alleging that HFPA members use their clout to monopolize entertainment coverage in foreign territories. She alleged that she had been repeatedly denied membership because two members feared she would compete with them for freelance assignments in Norway and Denmark.
The 87 Hpfa members are best known for voting on the Golden Globe Awards, which gives them access to stars during awards season.
In its motion to dismiss the suit, the HFPA argues that Flaa has had a successful career as an entertainment journalist without being a member.
“Yes, membership in the HFPA conveys reputational and other benefits upon its members,” the organization argues. “But Flaa loudly proclaims that reporters like her have had substantial success without becoming HFPA members.

Daniel Radcliffe is picking up his wand again and returning to the world that catapulted him to stardom by reading the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone as part of a Wizarding World lockdown initiative.
Radcliffe has been joined by a cast of narrators, including Fantastic Beasts star Eddie Redmayne, who will each read a chapter from the first installment in J. K. Rowling’s mega-franchise. In doing so, they hope to help people “continue to stay at home and keep safe.”
The readings will be released on a weekly basis by Rowling’s Wizarding World. They will be published as videos on the Wizarding World website, while the audio will be available to stream exclusively on Spotify. Radcliffe’s first chapter was released today to launch the series.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is one of the best Marvel movies for fun supporting roles, from Donald Glover’s Aaron Davis to Hannibal Buress’ Coach Wilson to Chris Evans’ meme-able cameo. There’s also Martin Starr as Peter Parker’s teacher Mr. Harrington, who escorts Spidey and his Academic Decathlon team on their trip to Washington.
Harrington was actually Starr’s second role in the McU though, after he made a brief cameo in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk six years earlier as a student in the computer lab at Culver University who encounters Edward Norton’s Bruce Banner. The character is unnamed in the movie, but Kevin Feige’s now confirmed that this is a younger Harrington in his college days. Last November’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald shook up Harry Potter fans’ understanding of the Wizarding World canon in some pretty major ways. What with the climactic reveal that Credence is actually Albus Dumbledore’s hitherto-unknown younger brother, fans have kind of glossed over the fact that the film also tells us that Nagini, Voldemort’s pet snake, used to be a woman.
As played by Claudia Kim, Crimes established that Nagini was once a circus performer in Paris in the 1920s. A Maledictus, she was cursed to turn into a snake, a transformation that’s destined to one day become permanent. Sadly, we already know how the character ends up and suddenly, Neville’s slaying of the serpent in The Deathly Hallows doesn’t seem so heroic anymore.

When it was revealed Nagini would make an appearance in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, we were intrigued, but after seeing the movie - and knowing that (spoiler alert!) she chooses not to follow Grindelwald like friend Credence Barebone, aka the lost Dumbledore - we have questions.
After Newt Scamander and the Aurors' battle against Grindelwald, Nagini goes with them, the good guys, to Hogwarts. Somehow, 67 odd years later, Nagini ends up hanging out with the bad side, becoming one of Voldemort's most powerful weapons from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire to the end of the series. How the tides turn! If you're wondering why the Maledictus made a total 180-degree turn, you're not alone. Let's investigate why she may have slithered her way into the dark side.
Nagini is loyal to Voldemort because he can speak with snakes.

With the release of “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” we are now officially waist deep in this “Harry Potter” prequelverse. This prequel sequel is full of non-stop twists and turns, and drops some major bombshells that will reverberate throughout Potter lore.
And we’ve still got three more “Fantastic Beasts” movies on the way from director David Yates and series creator/screenwriter Jk Rowling. So, given the current trend of Hollywood blockbusters teasing future movies through bonus, post-credits scenes in the vein of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you might be wondering if “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” features some kind of look at the next movie hidden after the credits. You wouldn’t want to bail for the restroom only to miss such a thing, after all.
Well, if you’re in a rush to get out of the theater once the credits start rolling, I have some good news for you.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald ends on a whopper of a shock reveal. After spending the movie trying to find out who his biological family is, Johnny Depp’s titular dark wizard finally reveals the truth to Obscurus Credence Barebone in the film’s final moments: His birth name was Aurelius Dumbledore, making him the youngest brother of Jude Law’s legendary Hogwarts professor.
It was a revelation that completely flummoxed fans and sent them scurrying to Pottermore and the books to try and make sense of how Dumbledore could have had another brother. Like he’s said before, star Ezra Miller was just as shocked as we were when he first discovered the truth of his character’s lineage, and in a new chat with EW, he revealed that he still has yet to find out any further information from writer J.K. Rowling.

The backstory added to Nagini in Fantastic Beasts 2 recontextualizes the whole Potterverse... and not for the better.
This article contains Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald spoilers.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald gave a very human backstory to a creature long assumed to simply be a fantastic beast–Voldemort’s loyal snake Nagini. In the new movie, we meet Nagini as a twentysomething maledictus and Credence Barebone’s only friend as they’re trapped working in a magical circus in Paris circa 1927. In Fantastic Beasts 2, Claudia Kim portrays the character as empathetic and perceptive, as she tries to protect Credence at all costs and attempts to dissuade him standing by Grindelwald’s side. Yet by the very fact of her name, we know that in addition to the tragic fate of a maledictus, some contorted story awaits her to justify her eventual fervent loyalty to Lord Voldemort.

In “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” Claudia Kim’s previously unrevealed character is a witch named Nagini, who has the ability to turn into a snake. So why is this a big deal?
Because Nagini also happens to be the name of another iconic “Harry Potter” character — Lord Voldemort’s magical, extremely murderous pet snake. Well, just in case there was any doubt, “Harry Potter” creator Jk Rowling confirmed the two characters are one and the same.
Wait, what?

The cast of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald have a lot of feelings about a deleted scene from the long-awaited movie.
When quizzed about memorable moments during filming, numerous cast members call out the time they spent working on a complicated scene that could only take place during "magic hour" at the end of each day. The cast had to film it in sections, over a number of days in order to to get the light just right. But the scene wasn't just memorable because it took a long time to film but also because it involved the cast eating croissants. A lot of croissants. Claudia Kim clearly can't get over the idea of Nagini stuffing her face with pastries but had to admit, "It was literally the best croissant I ever had."

Hardcore Potterhead or not, you've probably heard the news that in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Voldemort's pet snake Nagini is actually a Maledictus, that is, a cursed witch who turns into an animal. It's a secret J.K. Rowling has kept for a whopping 20 years, and the reveal sparked controversy among fans who found it problematic for an Asian woman, South Korean actress Claudia Kim, to play the Dark Lord's pet snake. The actress herself defended her casting and hopes fans will see a nuanced side to Nagini once they watch the movie - for all we know, the complexity of her character could even extend to her being Voldemort's mother!
At the end of the day, Kim's small- and big-screen reputation exceeds her role as Nagini. The actress, also known as Kim Soo-hyun in South Korea, started her career on Korean TV networks, playing supporting parts on...

Are you sitting down? Just before the release of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, we've stumbled upon a wild new theory courtesy of our favorite corner of the internet, Reddit. Now, as you know, the new Fantastic Beasts film will have connected threads to the Harry Potter books, even moreso than before. We're going to be a seeing young Minerva McGonagall, as well as a young and maybe slightly gay Dumbledore. But perhaps even more titillating is the mystery surrounding one of the books' great villains: Nagini.
Recently, we learned that not only would we meet the woman who will become Nagini, but we'll also get more information about her origin story. Like, for instance, the fact that she's a Maledictus. But here's where things get really interesting. According to Reddit user soupycutie, there's a lot of evidence to suggest that Nagini may be more than just Voldemort's future horcrux and snake companion.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald is a labyrinthine land of confusion that swaps aforementioned roving “beasts” with far too many knotted and exhausting plot beats. The only “crime” here is dragging viewers through a most trivial midway adventure between more important films for over two hours. So many innocent deaths to prove a point, so much running in fairy-dust-specked circles like a hyperactive Niffler. Characters waltz in-and-out of importance and consequence until storylines become muddled into an undefinable sludge that abruptly concludes with an eradication colored by ice and fire. It’s cheap, massively manipulative, and entirely powered by an egotistical realization that Harry Potter fans will praise whatever Newt’s second round brings.
After destroying half of New York City, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) finds himself banned from international travel. His only hope at reinstated freedoms is to enlist alongside brother Theseus (Callum Turner) as an Auror. Newt refuses to “take sides,...

‘Fantastic Beasts’: Johnny Depp Allegations and Mixed Reviews Won’t Deter Potterheads, Research Says
Johnny Depp’s abuse allegations and personal drama, on top of divisive reviews and social media backlash surrounding the upcoming chapter in the wizarding world have little impact on legion Harry Potter fans.
This Friday marks the release of “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” a Warner Bros. sequel derived from characters created by J.K. Rowling in her blockbuster boy wizard books. In its brief but feverish promotional life, the film has been burdened with bad headlines that could sink a movie.
Here’s a recap of some of the headwinds facing the Potter spinoff. Depp, who plays the titular dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, has been accused by his ex-wife Amber Heard of physical abuse — an allegation he denies. He also consented to a lengthy Rolling Stone interview, in which he smoked hash and appeared to indulge in harder drugs, drank oceans of wine, and made a boozy forensic accounting of his declining personal fortune.

The Wizarding World gets a lot bigger in “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” a new fantasy adventure that plays like a 1,000-page novel shoved into a 134-minute running time. Now, Warner Bros. is hoping the trend will continue this weekend with “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” which will try to prove that the Harry Potter prequel series has achieved critic-proof status.

To start with, some credit where it’s due: In the nearly half century since the death of J.R.R. Tolkien, no writer of the English language has created a more pliable, tangible, and livable fantasy world than J.K. Rowling. And save for Peter Jackson’s sojourns to Middle Earth, no recent filmmaker has put in a more tireless shift translating such literary plenitude into comprehensible feature films than David Yates, who corralled the mammoth last three “Harry Potter” tomes into four hugely satisfying blockbusters and put a decent foot forward with the first of five planned prequels, 2016’s uneven yet promising “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”
Unfortunately, even the most meticulous world-building is only half the journey; you still have to populate that world with real characters and compelling stories, and it’s that second half of the equation that comes up missing in “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Recently, it was revealed that another familiar character from the Wizarding World would be returning in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Namely, Professor Minerva McGonagall, with Fiona Glascott stepping into the role previously played by Maggie Smith in the Harry Potter films. You’d think fans would be pleased to see the future head of Gryffindor house showing up in the sequel, but hardcore Potterheads actually have a bone to pick with this.
You see, having McGonagall turn up in Fantastic Beasts 2 goes against the established information we have on the character. According to a line in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and McGonagall’s bio on the Pottermore website, the Transfiguration professor left Hogwarts in 1954 before working for the Ministry of Magic for two years. In 1956, she then shifted to the career that she’d have until Harry Potter’s time at the school.

Warner Bros. has released a new featurette and three clips from director David Yates’ Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
The featurette puts the spotlight on Jude Law’s version of young Dumbledore. I was happy to see Law cast in the role and he’s been great in everything that we’ve seen from him in the film. This movie will explore what made the man that the fans all love and this video includes interviews with several members of the cast and crew sharing their thoughts on the iconic character.
You’ll also find three clips from the film including an extended scene that includes Albus Dumbledore tasking Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) with finding the recently escaped Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp). The second clips offers a scene involving Newt and Tina Goldstein was captured by MacUsa (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But,...

Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World.
At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MacUsa (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.
In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is not a film that’s short on controversies. After uproars about Johnny Depp’s casting as the titular villain and Dumbledore’s sexuality going unexplored, the latest sensitive issue is the reveal that Claudia Kim is playing Nagini, the same Nagini we know will eventually transform into Voldemort’s subservient snake.
While the intention behind the twist was clearly to add more backstory to a minor character from the Wizarding World we thought we knew, many took umbrage – or umbridge – with a Korean actress being cast in a part that was considered a step back for Asian representation in cinema. J.K. Rowling attempted to quell the flames of the outcry when she pointed out she’d been planning the twist all along, but it only caused more problems when she mixed up her mythologies.
But what does the actress herself think of the controversy?...

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald has had a rocky ride to cinemas, at least from corners of the fan community. Given the Harry Potter franchise’s vaguely inclusive liberal credentials, many were dismayed to see that the villainous Grindelwald would indeed be played by alleged wife-beater Johnny Depp. Though both creator J.K. Rowling and the studio faced a barrage of criticism over Depp continuing in the role, they stuck to their guns and, at least for a while, things seemed to have calmed down.
Then, after a trailer which confirmed the long-held fan theory that Claudia Kim’s character was indeed the human form of Nagini, it all kicked off again. The film suffered accusations of racism for making one of its few non-white cast members an evil snake woman, arguing that it struck the wrong chord for her to end up as the literal pet of an extremely pale wizard supremacist.
