An Oklahoma State University study has concluded that an episode of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy medical drama contributed to heightened public awareness of sexual assault.
The study, published in the journal Jama Internal Medicine earlier this month, claimed that the March episode, Silent All These Years, helped raise the profile of the group Rainn. A key was the call-out by series star Ellen Pompeo at the end of the episode, encouraging victims to call the organization’s hotline.
The Oku research found that searches for the terms “Rainn” spiked by 41 percent and “rape” by 8 percent following the episode’s airing. On Twitter, tweets with “sexual assault hotline” and “Rainn” increased by more than 1,000 percent. Beyond social media, calls to Rainn increased by 43 percent in the 48 hours after the episode, the organization claimed.

“The Conners” were first on stage at 11:30 a.m. in the main theater. Voters and their plus-ones filled all 419 seats, forcing a standby line across the Burbank, California lot. Clips from various episodes interspersed throughout the half-hour panel served to invigorate discussion. The “Grey’s Anatomy” panel that followed took a different approach by zeroing in on the consent-themed “Silent All These Years” episode, even bringing one-off guest star Khalilah Joi on stage in lieu of any of the regular cast. Guest actor casting in today’s increasingly rich landscape of television has evolved far beyond the days of glorified cameos, slumming stars or celebrities doing friendly favors. And the myriad ways that series and actors — from rising stars to A-listers — come together can result in moments of pure gold, on screen and at awards ceremonies.
Ann-Margret took a guest role on Netflix’s “The Kominsky Method” to shake off the grief she felt after the passing of her husband. “All of a sudden I get this call from [Alan] Arkin and he said, ‘You’ve got to get back to work!’” the screen icon recalls. Arkin pitched her to series creator Chuck Lorre to play the woman pursuing his recently widowed character, and they were soon sharing scenes together. “At the very end I said to him, ‘You were right.’”

“It’s kind of bigger than we can wrap our heads around,” admits “Grey’s Anatomy” showrunner and executive producer Krista Vernoff about making TV history earlier this season by surpassing “ER’s” record as the longest-running medical drama ever. Gold Derby recently sat down with Vernoff and co-executive producer/writer Elisabeth R. Finch to discuss this milestone accomplishment as well as the show’s powerful consent episode, titled “Silent All These Years,” that some fans are calling one of the best in 15 seasons. Grey's Anatomy is known for its intense episodes, but its March 28 episode might be the most powerful yet. Named after Tori Amos's song "Silent All These Years," the episode revolves around two situations: Jo (Camilla Luddington) meeting her mother (stunningly played by Michelle Forbes) for the first time, and Jo treating a patient who comes to the hospital after being attacked. From the first minute to the last, "Silent All These Years" takes an in-depth look into complex issues like consent, domestic violence, and sexual assault in a way that we have no doubt will mark the episode as one of the most poignant of the entire series.

Never under estimate the power of Shonda Rhimes. The creator and executive producer of Grey's Anatomy defended the medical drama's depiction of a rape kit being administered in the Thursday, March 28 episode of the series titled "Silent All These Years." In the episode, Jo (Camilla Luddington) meets her birth mother (Michelle Forbes), and learns why she gave her up all those years ago: Jo was a product of rape. She was sparked by the arrival of a trauma patient (Khalilah Joi) at Grey Sloan. Jo eventually convinced Abby to have a rape kit administered and that's where notes came down from ABC's standards and practices department. "We received notes initially from ABC's broadcast...
