In the name of all that is blasphemous, satanic and unholy, what in Satan’s asshole did I just watch?
Mark Of The Witch is an ambitious mess of hackneyed gimmicks that might have been salvageable with a proper budget, not just writer/director Jason Bognacki’s can-do attitude. I’m all for filmmakers going rogue and shooting original content, but only within their pre-determined means. Bognacki’s style is marred by atrocious CGI and incoherent storytelling, all of which try to skirt by on the presumption that arthouse pretension trumps any semblance of a worthwhile narrative. And you know what? Maybe it would have without all the fluctuating audio levels, fish-eye lensing and inexcusable animated misfires.
Maybe.
Bognacki opens on robed cultists (presumably witches) who are holding a baby, before transitioning into an overhead shot of a birthday cake that reads the name “Jordyn” (Paulie Rojas). As the happy post-teen celebrates another year,...

There’s a joke in Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, the under-seen but superlative comedy about the making of a fictional eighties horror programme, that is too good not to repeat at any given opportunity. In it, the show’s producer, played by Richard Ayoade, claims that due to episodes running far too short, any scene without dialogue was considered for slow motion. Given its own brief running time of just eighty minutes and its predilection for the special effect, one wonders if Mark of the Witch was produced under a similar ethos.
Mark of the Witch portrays Jordyn (Ana Paula Redding), a young woman who keeps having weird and wacky experiences of a not entirely pleasant nature. Turns out, she’s being harassed/possessed by a demonic presence. There’s not...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by director Jason Bognacki and Full Frame Features. Bognacki and this writer have worked together in the past. Director/writer: Jason Bognacki. Cast: David Landry, Maria Olsen, Lillian Pennypacker and Paulie Redding. Another is the first feature film from director Jason Bognacki ("The Red Door"). This film has played at several film festivals, recently and the reception has been mostly positive. The film can best be described as a Giallo-themed thriller, with a few gothic elements added in. Bognacki's first feature is light on story, with the director focusing more on the visual display. In the film, two immortals fight over the souls of the living; there is no clear winner. Shot on 4K digital with the Red One camera, the visuals of Another will stay with the viewer, long after the curtains have fallen. The story begins with a coven of witches.

Female Eye Film Festival in Toronto, Canada, is showing some brand new thrillers directed by women that you will Not have seen playing anywhere else.
High on my list of stuff to see at Female Eye is Stacie Ponder's Ludlow, which stars Viscera founder Shannon Lark, and which I watched being edited. It's screening on March 18th and is guaranteed to scare the shit out of you.
Check out the other movies, some of which are making their world premieres. I'm suprised that they shied away from using the word "horror" to describe some of these movies; drama and thriller and suspense seem to be far less offensive terms to the mainstream movie-going public. Thank God we're not the mainstream movie-going public, eh?
