Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Dan Baker on Wbgr-fm on March 22nd, 2024, reviewing “Shirley,” featuring Regina King as 1960s/70s Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. Streaming on Netflix since March 22nd.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Ms. King portrayed Congresswoman Chisholm as she launches an impossible dream of running for the Democratic nomination for president in 1972. Behind Ms. Chisholm was her husband Conrad (Michael Cherrie), her advisors Arthur Hardwick (Terrence Howard) and Mac Holder (Lance Reddick), as well as colleagues Congressman Walter Fauntroy (André Holland) and future politico and congresswoman, Barbara Lee (Christina Jackson). The result of her run are obviously known, but it’s the insider process that is the guts of this impossible dream.
”Late Night with the Devil” is in select theaters on March 22nd. See local listings. Featuring David Dastmalchian, Rhys Auteri, Ian Bliss, Laura Gordon and Ingrid Torelli. Co-written and directed by Colin and Cameron Cairnes.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass had two obvious reasons to attend Tuesday night’s Netflix premiere of John Ridley’s Shirley starring Regina King as trailblazing politico Shirley Chisolm.
“Shirley Chisholm is a woman who impacted me and influenced me when I was a child. She gave me the courage and the stamina and the fortitude,” Bass explained to The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet outside the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. “But I’m also here because my friend, representative Barbara Lee, is a character in the movie and I want to see young Barbara Lee.”
Lee, who is played in the film by actress Christina Jackson, was also on the scene. Congresswoman Lee has been representing California’s 12th District (previously the 13th) since 1998, and she is the highest ranking African American woman appointed to Democratic leadership, thanks to her role as co-chair of the Policy and Steering Committee,...

Chicago – One of the great lesser known pioneers of social and civil rights history is Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. As a black woman in the 1960s/70s, she not only was elected to the House of Representatives but also ran for president in 1972 against all odds. Actor Christina Jackson was in Chicago on behalf of the new biopic, “Shirley.”
Shirley Chisholm was the first black woman elected to Congress in 1968, and within the political atmosphere in 1972 decided to run for the Democratic presidential nomination. Behind Ms. Chisholm was her husband Conrad (Michael Cherrie), her advisors Arthur Hardwick (Terrence Howard) and Mac Holder (Lance Reddick), as well as colleagues Congressman Walter Fauntroy (André Holland) and future politico Barbara Lee (Christina Jackson).

At a glance, Shirley Chisholm’s 1972 campaign for president was the definition of quixotic. She was 47 years old; at the time, she had served only one term (starting in 1968) as the first Black woman to be elected to Congress. (Her district centered on the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn.) To say that Chisholm wasn’t a seasoned Washington, D.C., player would be putting it mildly. And she looked like an outsider. She wore puffy wigs, schoolmarm glasses, and tasteful print dresses. There was a slightly prim stoicism about her, though she lit up whenever she flashed her smile with the gap tooth on the right side. She looked like who she was — a day-care supervisor from Bed-Stuy, and a devout Christian.
But her persona didn’t end there. This church lady was a fighter, of Guyanese and Bajan descent, and she spoke with a pristine propriety that carried a hint...

Many may not know the name Shirley Chisholm, but it is not for lack of Hollywood trying to keep her flame alive. The seven-term Brooklyn congresswoman, who became the first African American woman elected to Congress when she won in 1968, also became the first woman and first African American to seek the nomination for President of either major party when she ran for the Democratic nomination in 1972. She defined the word “trailblazer” and her story is indeed inspiring, if also frustrating for all the obstacles she had to overcome in a male-dominated business of governing. Uzo Aduba won an Emmy for her supporting role as Chisholm the 2020 limited series Mrs. America, even as the series itself was focused on conservative gadfly Phyllis Schaffly played by Cate Blanchett. That series touched on the 1972 campaign and thus Chisholm as well, but now, after 15 years of trying, Regina King has realized a longtime...

John Ridley won an Oscar for his screenplay for 12 Years a Slave, but his projects since have been far less impressive. The new Netflix biopic Shirley, starring Regina King as Shirley Chisholm, should herald Ridley’s return to the realm of prestige fare. Unfortunately, the film all too often takes the easy way out, making it yet another biopic about an unforgettable person.
Shirley tells the story of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress, as she embarks on a campaign to receive the Democratic nomination to become President of the United States. Shockingly, despite her importance, there hasn’t been a major biopic about Chisholm yet, but this isn’t the tribute she deserves.
Unlike many biopics, Shirley is mercifully brief at under 2 hours long. However, perhaps ironically, this also causes the film to feel like a truncated, Wikipedia-esque telling of the details of Chisolm’s presidential campaign.

Netflix’s Shirley is in so many ways a companion piece to the streaming platform’s recent Rustin that the two films could be entries in the same anthology series. Both shed light on influential Black political figures too long undervalued in historical accounts of their era. Both are driven by commanding performances from first-rate actors in the title roles. Both focus on specific chapters of the lives they depict, mostly skirting the clichés of cradle-to-grave biopics. But both also struggle to frame their subjects in the forceful dramatic terms they merit, getting stuck in too much expository talk and at times nudging reclamation into hagiography.
There’s a moment late in the film, where after long resisting the notion of campaigning in California as a waste of time and resources in her run for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination, Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm (Regina King) finally agrees to make a play...

There’s no doubt that John Ridley’s Shirley is trying to make a statement about marginalized peoples’ role in shaping America and their power when it comes to making their presence known to those who would never see them otherwise. But the film also uses one of our greatest and most complex Black leaders to make that statement, and it’s cheaper for it, reducing the arc of Shirley Chisholm’s life to a handful of easy platitudes and inspirational movie clichés. In the end, this sub-Sorkin-esque political potboiler sidelines her most meaningful community work to the fact that she tried and failed to run for president.
The film’s first scenes speed run through roughly a decade of Chisholm’s political life, largely glossing over her time as a teacher and years of activism for equal rights. Much of that time saw her struggling to be heard as a woman of color.

Shirley Chisholm, on whom the movie is based, was a key figure in 1970s American politics as the first Black woman and one of the few women in politics.
The film ‘Shirley’s trailer looks intriguing as Regina King tries to honor the role. It also gives insight into the late Lance Reddick’s last roles.

In the Shirley trailer, the first thing that catches the eye is King’s portrayal as a congresswoman. It’s worth noting that the politician is depicted as an insatiable optimist, a quality that was challenging to cultivate during a time when the US had recently passed segregation laws. At that moment, Shirley was the person who could lead important debates and guide society forward.
In her trailer, Shirley emphasizes her goal of becoming President instead of settling for a representative position.

The film tells the story of Chisholm’s trailblazing United States presidential campaign in 1972, making her the first Black candidate to seek a major party’s nomination for president and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. "Fearless. Fierce. First." Netflix has revealed the official trailer for their upoming biopic film titled Shirley, from filmmaker John Ridley following his Nola hospital thriller series Five Days at Memorial just before this. The film is now set for streaming in March on Netflix, and based on early test screening reviews, it's not going to make much of an impact (which is why it didn't open in last year's awards season). Shirley tells the story of the first Black congresswoman in America's history and a political icon, Shirley Chisholm, and her trailblazing run for President of the United States years ago. It chronicles her audacious, boundary-breaking 1972 presidential campaign. The film stars Regina King in the lead role as Shirley Chisholm, with Lance Reddick (Rip), Terrence Howard, Lucas Hedges, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Michael Cherrie, Christina Jackson, Dorian Crossmond Missick, Amirah Vann, and André Holland. This looks like a by-the-numbers biopic in every way.

Apple TV+ has canceled its drama series Swagger after two seasons.
The series about a high school basketball star (played by Isaiah Hill) and his journey through the world of youth hoops is loosely inspired by the life of NBA star Kevin Durant, who’s an executive producer. The cancellation comes a few months after season two’s final episode streamed in August.
Series creator, showrunner and director Reggie Rock Bythewood shared the news of Swagger’s end on Instagram. “What an amazing adventure. In our two seasons, we have launched careers, disrupted genre, brought forth humanity through our characters, told stories we care deeply about, revolutionized the way to shoot basketball and had fun. That’s a blessing,” he wrote.
After thanking fellow executive producers Durant, Brian Grazer and Rich Kleiman and producers Imagine Television and CBS Studios, Bythewood added, “Apple, while you are not ordering a season three,...

The second season of Swagger will debut on Apple TV+ in June. The streamer announced the news Wednesday, along with a few first look images of the cast.
The images don’t give much away, showing a few moments with star Isaiah Hill’s character Jace Carson. One appears to be on the court after a game with O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s Ike, a former star player-turned-youth basketball coach. Another image appears to be a more tender interaction between Jace and Quvenzhané Wallis’ Crystal.
Season 2 comes just under two years after the premiere of the first installment, which prompted a bit of a time jump to accommodate the aging of the younger cast, as well usher in a more compelling storyline, creator, showrunner and director Reggie Rock Bythewood said during Apple TV+’s Television Critics Association panel.

Devotion is a film directed by J.D. Dillard starring Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell.
This is a movie that delivers what it promises, no more and no less, and does just enough (or even a little less) in the story department and ferociously and devotedly hangs onto the technical department of recreation and, above all, the action scenes.
Premise
During the Fifties, in the Cold War times, two very different pilots will be forced to fight the enemy and test their friendship in combat.
About the Movie Devotion (2022)
Devotion is one of those movies about heroes in a war with all against each other, all the clichés we can find in this genre applied to a historic recreation that is technically brilliant, but loses power because of its simple screenplay with barely any depth to it and which bases its strength on the excellent scenes of fighter pilot aircraft in combat.

A movie that somewhat flew under the radar (pun intended) this year is the war drama, Devotion. Jonathan Majors, whose star is on the rise with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania coming out along with Creed III, shows his chops as the leading man in this historical air combat film that is based on a true story. Devotion is set to be available for purchase with never-before-seen bonus content on Digital in the U.S. and Canada as well as streaming on Paramount+ this January 8.

From Christina Jackson’s perspective, acting chose her — not the other way around. “I was always very animated, and my parents thought I [might become] a lawyer,” recalls Jackson, 35, of her formative years in Plainfield, New Jersey. The vocation she would make her career as an adult first presented itself when Jackson was in seventh grade. “There wasn’t a lot available — like, I wasn’t taking karate classes, I wasn’t doing ballet,” she says of the moment a teacher in her middle school suggested she join the drama club.
The connection was immediate. “I love reading, I love storytelling — I love turning the page and being transported back in time or to another world,” says Jackson. Discovering a talent for performing led her to an arts-focused high school, where she majored in drama. “It wasn’t a game anymore. This was real work.

“Devotion” adapts the remarkable true story of Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner, Navy pilots following WWII and before The Korean War who had each other’s backs no matter what. Ensign Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors) was the first African American carrier pilot to serve in the navy. He found his calling from a super young age, realizing it fully when he saw a poster advertising flying for the Navy at Ohio State University. Lieutenant Tom Hudner passed up Harvard to go to the Naval Academy, and he became Jesse’s wingman.
Based on the book by Adam Makos, “Devotion” follows Jesse and Tom’s journey alongside Fighting 32, their assigned Flight Squadron, as tension built following World War II to bleed into The Korean War. Alongside the starring pair, Christina Jackson, Joe Jonas and more appear.

“Devotion,” says composer Chanda Dancy, “is about true eternal love. How do you translate love for family, love for your fellow man, love for your country, into music? That’s what the director and I wanted to create.”
Dancy’s score for the J.D. Dillard film about an African-American pilot who became a Korean War hero is among its biggest assets: a work for massive orchestra that underlines the thrill of flight, the dangers of war, and the close emotional ties forged between fellow airmen along with their families waiting back home.
It took 109 Nashville musicians eight days of recording to complete the score for “Devotion,” and if Academy voters recognize the accomplishment, Dancy could become the first Black woman to be nominated for best original score.
Dillard hired her more than two years ago, even before shooting began. The first theme she wrote (titled “Measure of a Man”) was...

Devotion director Jd Dillard knew what was in store when Jonathan Majors was scheduled to perform his Korean War drama’s most powerful scene, but the performance still hit harder than anyone expected.
Devotion chronicles the heroics of the first Black naval aviator, Jesse L. Brown (Majors), during the Korean War, as well as his relationships with his loving wife, Daisy (Christina Jackson), and wingman Tom Hudner (Glen Powell). Prior to each flight, Brown performed a ritual in which he would look in the bathroom mirror and recite all of the horrible remarks that have been said to him over the course of his life.
For Dillard, it was most important that his actor feel safe on the unusually quiet set.

Review: In the middle of so many art films here at TIFF, it’s still refreshing to know that a well-crafted, mainstream, big-studio potential blockbuster can still find its way in. Sporting a huge up-and-coming star in Glen Powell, Devotion is exceedingly well-timed, with him having just played another Naval aviator to massive success in Top Gun: Maverick. Pairing him with Jonathan Majors, who’s about to become the big new bad guy in the next batch of Marvel movies, may prove to be a savvy move for Sony, with this likely to appeal to the same audience that liked Maverick so much. This is another unfussy crowdpleaser and, like Maverick, tells...

It’s important to keep in mind when sitting down to the big holiday meal in a day or so, that many families will have a temporary missing seat at the table. That’s the case with so many households with loved ones serving in the military. And then there’s the empty seat that goes from temporary to permanent. This Thanksgiving weekend’s new film release touches on that with a tale of real-life heroism in the sky. Oh, but it’s not another Top Gun wannabe, although it features one of the recent sequel’s hunky young stars. This is based on a conflict 72 years in the past. And, as I said, it’s all true concerning a group of men who possess a very special kind of Devotion.
The saga starts at a naval air base in Rhode Island as Navy fighter pilot Tom Hudner (Glen Powell) arrives for his new assignment.

It's remarkable how often seemingly ancient history becomes relevant again in our modern day -- sometimes tragically so. Such is the case in director J.D. Dillard's newest movie, "Devotion." The movie focuses on the Korean War of the early 1950s, telling the harrowing true story of two elite U.S. Navy fighter pilots. Specifically, the movie shines a light on Jesse Brown, played by Jonathan Majors ("Lovecraft Country"), who became the first Black aviator to ever complete the U.S. Navy's basic flight training program.
Looper's Don Kaye recently had the chance to speak with Majors in honor of the film's forthcoming release this weekend. During the conversation, Kaye asked the actor who relevant Brown's story is all these years later, particularly for Black people who are still facing roadblocks in today's society. Majors, for his part, feels Brown's story is an ever-relevant hero's journey to be used as...

This story about Joe Jonas and the film “Devotion” originally appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap Magazine.
When Joe Jonas signed on to be a part of “Devotion,” director J.D. Dillard’s drama about the friendship between Naval aviators Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner during the Korean War, it had nothing to do with his day job as a singer. Instead, Jonas was hired to act in the film, playing a pilot who fought alongside Brown, one of the Navy’s first Black aviators. It was only later, after the film had been completed that Dillard asked Jonas if he’d be interested in writing and performing a song for the end credits.
“I’d been trying to separate the two passions of mine, acting and music, but this project was so dear to my heart that I wanted to do it,” he said. “It was exciting but also overwhelming.

Glen Powell first learned the story of naval fighter pilots Tom Hudner and Jesse Brown upon reading Adam Makos’ 2017 book “Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice.” It set the “Hidden Figures” and “Top Gun: Maverick” actor on a path to make “Devotion,” hitting theaters Nov. 23. Powell not only stars as Hudner but is a producer on the film, having spent years bringing the project to fruition. Set during the Korean War, the film also stars Jonathan Majors as Brown, who was the first Black aviator in the U.S. Navy and a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Were you surprised when you heard the story of “Devotion”? I was not familiar with Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner prior to this film.
I was the same. I first read the book about four years ago. Reading it, I remember thinking that it was incredible that I’d never heard this story before.

The Los Angeles premiere of “Devotion,” starring Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell, served as both a salute to the legacy and lineage of Korean War heroes Jesse L. Brown, the first African American Navy aviator, and Thomas Hudner, his devoted wingman, as well as a celebration of the familial bonds forged during the shoot.
“This movie, in so many ways, is a family effort,” director Jd Dillard said, introducing the film’s cast and crew before a packed house inside the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood on Tuesday night. “We all moved together like the boys shipping off to war to make this movie.”
Dillard then asked the few dozen descendants of Brown and Hudner in attendance to stand for a round of applause. It’s overwhelming to share these moments with the families, Dillard told Variety on the red carpet, but, he added, “There’s no other way to do it.

Jonathan Majors has an uncanny comfort when it comes to playing men in uniform.
In his first film role, Scott Cooper’s “Hostiles,” the actor portrayed a 19th-century corporal stationed in New Mexico. In the HBO supernatural horror TV series “Lovecraft Country,” he was a World War II veteran returning home to the monsters of white supremacy. He even portrayed the son of a Ptsd-afflicted, Trump-voting veteran in Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods.”
The military is not only in Majors’ name, it’s in his DNA: His father was in the Air Force. His grandfather served in the Navy.
“I did not serve, but it’s just how I was brought up,” Majors said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “Every man in my lineage, for the most part, who had any real influence in rearing me, with the exception of my uncle, were in the military. If you...

International pop icon and the brother of Nick Jonas – Joe Jonas is set to portray Marty Goode – the real life naval officer in the upcoming film ‘Devotion’. The singer-actor felt a responsibility to capture the real person – the veteran who joined the Navy at 16, had seen war, and found ways to keep his fellow airmen loose through humour.
He said: “When you are researching a real person, it’s a different kind of pressure. You want to make sure that you’re not only playing the character on the page, but you’re doing the real person justice, too.”
The film is an aerial war epic directed by J D Dillard.
