Great casting is one of the things best defined by what it is not. There’s an alchemy to the assembling of a cast — particularly a larger ensemble — that can only be achieved with luck and a sharp eye. And while the 2022-2023 TV season saw plenty of larger-than-life performances and jaw-dropping transformations, these four first-year series managed, in wildly different ways, the same balancing act of star turns and sharply delineated supporting roles. Here are four series worthy of Emmy Award consideration for their feats of casting.

Pedro Pascal parodied his hit HBO series The Last of Us during an appearance on Saturday Night Live last night (4 February).
The actor, who plays the character of Joel in the gritty apocalypse drama, was hosting the popular NBC sketch show.
In a pre-recorded sketch, Pascal was seen starring as Mario in a dark, Last of Us-esque adaptation of Nintento’s popular Mario Kart games.
SNLregulars Chloe Fineman and Kenan Thompson starred as Princess Peach and Bowser respectively.
The fake Mario Kart series is purportedly set 10 years after the collapse of the Mushroom Kingdom, with Mario’s adversaries, the Goombas, depicted as walking fungi, reminiscent of the “infected” from The Last of Us.
Viewers reacted enthusiastically to the sketch on social media, with some deeming the parody “hilarious”.

The Casting Society of America’s annual Artios Awards, which recognize superior achievement in the casting of film, TV and theater projects, has announced the nominees for its film categories, which range from 200 million blockbusters to low-and-micro budget titles.
Anticipated Oscar darlings such as “Elvis,” “Tar,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fabelmans” and “Glass Onion” are present along with juggernauts “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “The Batman.” “Top Gun: Maverick” is strangely absent.

James Cameron's "Avatar" film series is an ongoing work of science fiction built upon more money and sheer human effort than any single Hollywood project has any right to be made with. And yet, somehow, it exists, so we're absolutely going to talk about it. Every frame of CGI (which is basically every frame of both films) denotes the combined skill of hundreds of VFX artists. Taking it a step further, every design that the VFX team brought to life denotes another tier of creators, whether it be Dylan Cole, who shaped the oceanic side of Pandora for "The Way of Water," or Deborah L. Scott, who clothed Cameron's Na'vi in both of the "Avatar" films.
You'd think that designing a few loincloths for fancy cartoon space aliens would be easy, especially for someone like Scott whose previous credits include everything from "Back to the Future" and "Titanic" to "The Amazing Spider-Man 2,...

In James Cameron's 2009 film "Avatar," which takes place almost entirely on the distant planet of Pandora, several characters make passing mention that life on Earth is squalid. The implication is that poor resource allocation and rampant pollution has made our world intolerable, making it a striking contrast to the placid, glowing forests of the alien planet. It wouldn't be until an extended DVD director's cut of "Avatar," however, that life on Earth would be actually depicted on screen. Cameron's argument for Pandora as an Eden-like paradise might have stood stronger had audiences seen more of how terrible Earth actually was.
Cameron mentions the squalid Earth again in the 2022 sequel "Avatar: The Way of Water." A human military general named Frances Ardmore (Edie Falco) mentions to the resurrected Col. Quaritch (Stephen Lang) that "Earth is dying." And while humans can't breathe the atmosphere of Pandora, major terraforming measures were already underway.

In James Cameron's new sci-fi film "Avatar: The Way of Water" -- already one of the 10 highest-grossing films of all time -- our Na'Vi heroes Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) have to move their family from the safety of Pandora's placid forests to a distant, tropical archipelago. There, they become the guests of the Metkayina, a tribe of Na'Vi that live in harmony with the oceans. The Metkayina can hold their breaths for an extended period of time, and their arms and tails have adapted for rapid swimming. Occasionally, they ride on the backs of flying ichthyosaurs, a sort of flying fish. The seas of the Metkayina are a beautiful biome of staggering alien diversity, and their villages are constructed of ropes, tents, and hammocks that hang tautly over crystal-clear lagoons from the branches of a strong, nearby tree. Like every visual aspect of the "Avatar" movies,...

In the years since the release of James Cameron's "Avatar" in 2009, a popular narrative cropped up that suggested nobody watched the box office-breaking hit for the strength of its script -- only its visuals. There's probably a kernel of truth in there, admittedly, as the world of Pandora was essentially treated as the living and breathing protagonist of the picture while everything else was secondary. Until "The Way of Water" finally rolled around, many people would've been hard-pressed to remember character names like Jake Sully or Colonel Quaritch or even Neytiri. But Pandora? You'd have to be in deep, deep denial to come away unimpressed by the stunning backdrop of exotic fauna and alien creatures that Cameron, his design team, and an army of VFX artists cooked up for the big screen.

"Avatar: The Way of Water" is one of the purest cinematic experiences of 2022, a movie that improves on most of the problems of its predecessor, gives us better characters with actual personality, and, of course, plenty of incredible visuals.
Taking place over a decade after the events of the first film, "The Way of Water" finds the Sully family on the run from a resurrected Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), taking refuge with the Metkayina clan of the coral reef and learning the aquatic ways of their tribe until trouble comes knocking at their door.
The sequel is, simply put, a spectacular film, especially when we're in the water. James Cameron shows us some incredible environments on Pandora, giving us the gift of the space whales known as the tulkun — which turns the film into the most expensive "save the whales" ad out there — all culminating in one of the...

A Twitter exchange between actress Bethany Anne Lind and Tara Feldstein, the latter a principal at powerful southeastern U.S. company Feldstein|Paris Casting, has ignited a heated discussion on social media, releasing years of pent-up anger and frustration among actors in the region.
Some of the rancor has been addressed at Feldstein|Paris, accusing them for not negotiating fair pay for Southeast-based talent, but many of the comments also focused on the inequality built into the current Hollywood system that allows for actors in places like Atlanta to be paid significantly less than their counterparts with similar bodies of work based in Los Angeles or New York, and to never be offered more than the bare minimum “scale” rate regardless of experience.
Following backlash, Feldstein took her Twitter feed private, but the situation, which flared up early last week, continued to escalate to a point where Feldstein|Paris principal...

For those that have not seen the show (Why not? It’s fantastic!), The Blacklist – which stars James Spader and Megan Boone – follows FBI profiler Elizabeth Keen (Boone) whose life is overturned when Raymond ‘Red’ Reddington (Spader), one of the FBI’s top ten most wanted criminals, turns himself in and demands to speak solely to her… Filled with glorious plot twists, character turns and an ever-increasing conspiracy, the show is (at least in our house) must-watch TV.
The Blacklist: Elizabeth Keen’s Dossier is a lavish visual celebration of the hugely popular and critically acclaimed show. For those unfamiliar, Sleepy Hollow is a Fox TV series; it’s an adaptation of the Washington Irving short story, ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’, which has been adapted many times before, most notably the 1999 Tim Burton film Sleepy Hollow. Titan Books has released Sleepy Hollow: Creating Heroes, Demons & Monsters by Tara Bennett and Paul Terry, looking at the series and I am reviewing the book.

It’s flows really well, taking us through the whole development. We can read about the initial ideas from co-creators Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci, Phillip Iscove and Len Wiseman, of a show involving witches and how this series differentiates from previous adaptations.

In Tara Bennett's book "Showrunners: The Art Of Running A TV Show," the job is variously described as being a dictator, a CEO or leading an army. And while we're now in the era of celebrity showrunners—Damon Lindelof ("Lost," "The Leftovers"), Matthew Weiner ("Mad Men"), Vince Gilligan ("Breaking Bad")—it's often forgotten how expansive the responsibilities that come with that position truly are. If you've ever wondered exactly how complicated the machinery is that drives your favorite show, or what the gig actually entails, Bennett's book—a companion piece to the forthcoming documentary directed by Des Doyle—is a slightly jumbled, but still interesting peek behind the curtain. With names like Joss Whedon, Jonathan Nolan, Terrence Winter, Damon Lindelof and more taking part, 'Showrunners' brings a broad spectrum of talent from shows both popular and niche, both successful and failed, to help define what that eleven letter word means.

The job title Showrunner says a lot; if you have ever been watching TV and stopped to think about all the hard work and dedication that goes into keeping your favorite programs exciting, you’re thinking of a showrunner. We usually don’t think about all the work that’s done behind the scenes for shows to run smoothly; until recently in this golden age of television, many of us had never heard the term. Showrunners are creators and writers of television shows; they’re decision makers and the creative authority and management of episodic television shows.
A lot of TV shows over the last few years became “required viewing” for fans around the world like Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, The Sopranos, Lost and The Big Bang Theory; each with notable showrunners who make it all possible. In Showrunners: The Art of Running a TV Show Tara Bennett explores...

On the final day of San Diego Comic-Con 2012, Warner Bros. presented the final "Fringe" panel in the enormous Hall H -- and of course, Zap2it was on the scene to get all the scoop you need from Anna Torv, Josh Jackson, Jasika Nicole, John Noble, and executive producer J.H. Wyman.
Here's what you need to know from the panel:
They won't start filming Season 5 until next week, but the exclusive reel played for fans did show new footage. Wyman had asked the actors to return to shoot video for the trailer, which was also used to convince Fox to give them the final 13 episodes.
