Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys” led all series at Monday night’s Astra TV Awards, scoring six trophies — including best streaming drama series. HBO’s “Succession” was close behind with five wins, including best cale drama series.
Organized by the newly renamed Hollywood Creative Alliance, the also-redubbed Astra TV Awards were formerly known as the Hca TV Awards. The Astras are unique in separating broadcast, cable and streaming into their own categories.
In broadcast, the biggest winner of the night was ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” which won four prizes — including best broadcast network comedy series.
Also on Monday, “The Boys” creator Eric Kripke was presented with the TV Icon award, while composer Ariel Marx (“A Small Light”) was given the Artisan Spotlight award. Comedian Aida Rodriguez hosted the event, which was produced by Diga Studios and Content.23 Media and held at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

Several months after the Hollywood Critics Association rebranded itself as the Hollywood Creative Alliance, the org has also given its signature awards shows a new name. The Hca announced Friday that its various Hca awards will now be known as ‘The Astra Awards.’
That means the Hca Film Awards, Hca TV Awards and Hca Creative Arts Awards will become the Astra Film Awards, Astra TV Awards and the Astra Creative Arts Awards. The name change was approved by the org’s advisory committee on Nov. 17.
“As the Hollywood Creative Alliance expands to include creatives and other industry professionals, we wanted an award name that would be reflective of the newly relaunched organization,” said Hca CEO Scott Menzel in a statement. “The name ‘Astra’ is a perfect award show title evoking celestial brilliance and creative mastery. If you're Dominican, chances are you're familiar with morir soñando, a simple but refreshingly crisp batida (milkshake) made with milk, orange juice, and vanilla extract. As simple as the three-ingredient drink seems, there's a reason it's given such a poetic name. "Morir soñando" translates as "to die dreaming," and after just one sip, one instantly feels like they've been transported into a dream - even if just for a matter of seconds. That was exactly the feeling Dominican American comedians and real-life besties Sasha Merci and Glorelys Mora, who both grew up in uptown (Merci specfically in the Bronx), wanted audiences to feel when they created their first all-Dominican comedy show back in 2019. On Monday, Nov. 6, the Morir Soñando show took over the historic United Palace, formerly Loew's 175th Street Theatre, in Washington Heights. It was the first show in the New York Comedy Festival to include an all-Dominican lineup,...

If you're a fan of Puerto Rican and Dominican comedian Aida Rodriguez, then you're likely very familiar with her HBO Max special, "Fighting Words." In the special, Rodriguez does a brilliant job at tackling topics like race, motherhood, and growing up without a present father - all with wit, humor, and grace. As blunt and to the point she may be, there's a vulnerability in Rodriguez's work that makes it really easy to connect with her, regardless of whether or not you can relate to her life experiences.
Although she's open in her comedy, in Rodriguez's new memoir, "Legitimate Kid," which releases on Oct. 17, we get to see a side of the comedian that viewers only get peeks of when she's on stage.
Like many kids who aren't raised with a present biological father, Rodriguez didn't feel "legitimate" growing up. The wounds and insecurities that developed from that - along...

Goodbye HBO Max, hello Max. Warner Bros. Discovery announced several weeks back that the company was dropping the "HBO" from the name of its flagship streaming service, and that day has come. What does that mean for you, the subscriber? For one, it means a lot more movies and TV shows will be streaming in 4K, and the list of initial titles is pretty impressive. There are, however, a few caveats.
Those who wish to watch movies like "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Argo" in Ultra HD will need to be subscribed to the new tier offered by Max called "Ultimate Ad-Free." This goes for $19.99 per month and includes access to the service's library of 4K movies and TV shows. There is also a plan with ads for $9.99 per month and a regular ad-free plan for $15.99 per month. Sudheer Sirivara, Global Technology Platform for Warner Bros. Discovery, had this to...

HBO Max is dead. Long live Max.
The new combined streaming service launched on Tuesday, and in addition to housing all of HBO Max and Discovery+’s content in one place, Max also plays host to a robust library of movies and TV shows streaming in 4K Uhd. At launch, more than 1,000 hours of programming are available in 4K, and Max says more will be added in the coming months.
Right now, you can stream all the “Harry Potter” movies, the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” trilogies, the “Dark Knight” trilogy, the “Matrix” films, “Dune,” “Joker” and even “The Wizard of Oz” and “Goodfellas” in 4K. Additionally, acclaimed (and cinematic) HBO series like “House of the Dragon,” “Barry” and “Succession” are also streaming in 4K, with additional shows (and seasons) to come.

SAG-AFTRA, in partnership with the Motion Picture Association and a host of other industry unions and organizations, has launched the Green Council Initiative to promote eco-responsible entertainment. Founded by SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher, the initiative’s top priority is the reduction of single-use plastic on set, on screen and in audience homes, while normalizing the use and depictions of reusables – much like the “Buckle Up Hollywood!” movement pushed to promote seat belt awareness back in the 1990s.
Green Council’s founding members include Drescher, Cate Blanchett, Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges, Diane Keaton, Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Salma Hayek, Gloria Estefan, Peter Sarsgaard, Rosario Dawson, Billy Porter, Aida Rodriguez, Jason Momoa, Rachel Bloom, Chris Colfer, David Dastmalchian and Ellen Crawford.

DJ Envy suggested Beyoncé was partially to blame for the poor sales of Chloe Bailey’s album In Pieces.
The 24-year-old singer’s debut record, released 31 March by Beyoncé’s label, currently sits at No 119 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and has sold just 10,000 units so far.
During the latest episode of The Breakfast Club radio show, the DJ – real name RaaShaun Casey – agreed with online critics who felt it was Beyoncé’s duty to promote Bailey’s album on her own social media accounts.
The “Have Mercy” singer signed to the Grammy winner’s record label, Parkwood Entertainment, in 2015.
“I do feel if you’re signed to somebody’s record label, or you are in business with somebody, right, that’s part of what you expect,” DJ Envy said.

"It's the kind of thing that I hope will make a difference in the way that we are seen and the way that people relate to us," Carolina Saavedra tells Popsugar about her new show "Leguizamo Does America." The six-part series premieres Sunday, Apr. 16, on MSNBC and follows actor, comedian, and film producer John Leguizamo as he travels across America and celebrates Latinx excellence.
"As a Latina in this country, I think we all revere John Leguizamo and feel as though he speaks - and has been speaking - on our behalf and for us for so long," Saavedra says. "And the idea of being able to work with him to celebrate our stories was a dream come true."
Saavedra served as showrunner on the series, taking it from a four- or five-page pitch deck with Leguizamo to the rich docuseries about to air. As she tells it, Saavedra's involvement began with a cold call.

On Jan. 11, Shakira dropped a juicy breakup track with Argentine producer Bizarrap titled "Bzrp Music Session #53," and it has since gone viral. The song serves as a diss track about the Colombian singer's ex, Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué, and his alleged cheating. The song racked up more than 63 million YouTube views in the 24 hours since it dropped last week, becoming the most-watched Latin debut song in YouTube history. The record-breaking doesn't stop there. It also skyrocketed to the top of Spotify's Top 50 Global chart, breaking the record of the most-streamed Latin track in a single day in Spotify history.
This is major, people. Is the secret sauce behind its success the fact that it's a track putting a cheater on blast? Or is it because the song is much more about empowerment than it is about heartbreak?
I think its forcefulness comes from the latter.

We've all probably heard the saying "growth and comfort can't ride the same horse." And in the comedy world, there are way too many OGs who refuse to evolve - we all know who they are. The truth is, what we find funny does change over the years - like it or not - because we are always evolving as a society. Good comedy is able to take a clever stab at something very relevant. That's no easy task in today's cultural climate, and yet rising comedy star Ian Lara has managed to strike the right chord when it comes to mastering it.
In Lara's HBO Max special, "Romantic Comedy" (directed by fellow comedian Aida Rodriguez), released on Nov. 11, the 32-year-old beautifully finesses the perfect balance of poking fun at modern dating - never getting cringy about it - and sexual politics. His perfect comedic timing, storytelling specificity, and ability...

Sean Penn, Vladimir Zelenskyy Rally Industry Support for Ukraine at Core Gala: ‘This Is Our Reality’
This is not a movie, Ukraine president Vladimir Zelenskyy told the crowd Friday night at the fundraising gala for Sean Penn’s humanitarian relief organization Core.
The embattled leader addressed the dinner event with a pre-recorded video that urged the wealthy and powerful attendees at the Hollywood Palladium event to find ways to support Ukraine. His five-minute plea was intercut with scenes of the detritus of war large and small, from buildings being blown up to a close-up of a battered and bloodied stuffed animal left behind on a road by a fleeing family.
“This is our reality,” said a grim-faced Zelenskyy, who wore a green T-shirt and fatigues while sitting in front of a tactical map. The actor, who became Ukraine’s president in 2019, addressed the industry crowd as a fellow professional. “It’s not VFX, it’s not computer graphics. All of this is our reality,” he said.

"Latinos like to flex on other Latinos. Nobody holds us down like how we hold each other down," Puerto Rican and Dominican comedian Aida Rodriguez says in her new one-hour HBO Max comedy special Fighting Words, that premieres on Nov. 4. Ain't that the truth! While there is something beautiful about the way Latinx communities unite and take pride in our cultures, there's no denying the discrimination and the harm that also tends to stem from Latinidad. Aida keeps it 100 when it comes to that reality. In her new show, she breaks down some of the hardships she's experienced from homelessness, growing up without her Dominican father present as a result of deportation, sexual abuse, and the issues that very much plague Latinx communities from colorism to misogyny and the divisions that exist within various Latinx communities – like the long-lived beef between Puerto Ricans and Dominicans. She highlights the shame that...

November is a good month for saying goodbye on HBO Max. The streaming platform will host the final 2021 episodes of HBO late-night staples “Real Time with Bill Maher” and the Emmy Award-winning “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” the season finales of Max originals “Love Life” and “Doom Patrol,” and also provide home viewers their last opportunity to watch “Dune” on HBO Max until sometime in 2022 (“Dune” leaves HBO Max on November 21).
But beyond those conclusions, there are some huge premieres as well: Oscar contender “King Richard” arrives on November 19 with Will Smith in the lead role, the back-half of “Gossip Girl” Season 1 will make its debut at some point, and the HBO Music Box series continues with the Alanis Morrisette documentary “Jagged” (which the singer roundly criticized) and a new feature on Dmx. Pa’lante!, which translates to “forward”, was founded on the vision of empowerment, resilience, and hope. It hopes to celebrate the ambicultural movement of embracing being both fully Latino and fully American without having to sacrifice any part of one’s identity.
“For more than a decade we’ve been developing creative, audience-first campaigns that strategically engage Latinx, Black, Asian-American and LGBTQ+ audiences,” said Jackie Gagne, Senior Vice President, Multicultural Marketing, WarnerMedia. “With the launch of HBO Max Pa’lante! we are creating a home for Latinx viewers and a community committed to nurturing Latino voices and sparking provocative conversations.”
As Pa’lante! kicks into gear, HBO Latino social media handles will be rebranded to @palantehbomax.

Actor Gina Torres had a “rude awakening” early on in her career when the “Suits” star realized that she would be pigeonholed as she sought out roles because of the color of her skin.
Torres spoke Sept. 17 during panel session with Black and Latinx actors organized by the African American Film Critics Association and the National Association of Latino Independent Producers, to kick off Latinx Heritage Month on Sept. 17 with a discussion about the experiences of Afro-Latinx talent in the entertainment industry.
Moderated by Magdalena Albizu, director of the documentary “Negrita,” the conversation consisted of Afro-Latinx actors and creatives including Torres, Selenis Leyva, Aida Rodriguez, Rick Gonzales, Yaya DaCosta and Sarah La Morena. Panelists shared their experiences as Afro-Latinx actors in Hollywood and discussed how the industry can better represent all Latinx cultures.
The consensus among the panelists was that they had all faced being pigeonholed into certain roles because of their skin color.

“What a difference a year makes, for Black people,” declared two-time Emmy-winning actor Sterling K. Brown, who was honored by the African American Film Critics Association (Aafca) Saturday for the second consecutive year for his performance on NBC’s “This Is Us.” “Last year we were having fun,” Brown pointed out in his poignant acceptance speech, adding that “we were all together under one roof, celebrating one another in person, hugs, handshakes, etc. and now we’re a bit more separate. But our lives matter.”
In a prelude to what we can expect at the Emmys next month, Aafca live streamed its 2nd Annual Aafca TV Honors as a responsible socially-distanced virtual ceremony today that was high on emotion and star power. Exclusive: HBO Max has put in development a single-camera half-hour comedy based on the life of comedian Aida Rodriguez, starring and co-written by Rodriguez, and executive produced by Tiffany Haddish and her She Ready Productions.
Co-written by Rodriguez, Chris Case (Legit) and Nastaran Dibai (Resident Alien), the project examines the struggle of an Afro-Latina comedian (Rodriguez) who is trying to kick start a career while raising two very different teenagers on her own over multiple time zones. It is an uplifting story of survival and triumph in the face of a darkly funny Miami ghetto upbringing, where she learned skills that allowed her to thrive and survive.
Rodriguez, Case and Dibai executive produce with Haddish via She Ready Productions and Evan Silverberg and Daniel Rappaport for Management 360.
Rodriguez was one of six comedians whose half-hour stand-up specials were featured by Haddish in Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready for Netflix.
