David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

‘Succession’ has gone out with one final bang: The HBO drama won two Writers Guild of America Awards on Sunday night — the most of any series — for best drama series and also for best drama episode. Creator Jesse Armstrong was on hand in New York to accept the award, while several of the show’s writers were also in LA to accept the honor.
This reps the final major awards show where “Succession” (which ended its run last May) was still eligible. Besides best drama, the show also won the episodic drama prize, for the episode “Living+,” written by Georgia Pritchett and Will Arbery.

As the star, co-creator, executive producer, writer and director of Showtime’s dark comedy series The Curse, Nathan Fielder admitted he and his collaborator Benny Safdie were committed to infusing the show’s satirical take on an unscripted HGTV home-flipping series with as much a sense of reality – or faux reality – as possible that he didn’t realize some of the crew were left wondering how much of the show they were working itself on was actually real.
During Deadline’s Contenders TV panel Sunday, Fielder learned from production designer Katie Byron that she and many of the crew had begun to suspect that the rug was going to be pulled out from under them at any moment. “There was a lot of meta stuff happening in the show where we were all convinced that it was a show-within-a-show-within-a-show,” said Byron. “We actually were waiting to find out that it was.

“The Curse” has become one of the most talked-about shows this year with its idiosyncratic mix of cringe comedy, weird horror, marital drama, and sentiment proving to be a recipe for brilliance. The acclaimed Showtime drama series follows Nathan Fielder and Oscar winner Emma Stone as a newly married couple who host an HGTV show. They try to conceive a child as they navigate the effects of a curse.
Fielder and Stone’s performances propel the show to greatness and they are ably supported by Benny Safdie, who co-created the show with Fielder. He plays a desperate producer and while the role is scenery-chewing enough, it’s also a great role for filmmaker Safdie to once again show his acting chops, as noted by critics.
Nick Schager (The Daily Beast) proclaimed: “Safdie makes him a behind-the-scenes sorta-psycho who’s as compelling as his on-air compatriots, inhabiting Dougie with a brand...

Emma Stone became the lucky 13th two-time Best Actress Oscar champ with her recent win for “Poor Things.” And she could well be adding an Emmy to her awards collection for her leading role in Showtime’s idiosyncratic drama series “The Curse.”
“The Curse,” created by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, follows a newly married couple (Stone and Fielder) who host an HGTV show while trying to conceive a baby and navigate a curse. Sure the series is rich in cringe comedy that is hard to tear your eyes from even if you watch through your fingers. But it is also intelligent, dark and surprisingly moving. At the heart of it all is Stone, who delivers yet another tour de force, as noted by critics.

The number of Gold Derby readers predicting the 2024 Primetime Emmy nominations in 16 major categories has risen above 2,000 even with the nominations announcement still three months away. Our predicted lineups have changed significantly within the last week alone, indicating increased support for some programs and greater apathy toward others.
Four new predicted acting nominees have emerged since April 1. The only one hailing from a continuing series is Theo James (“The Gentlemen”), who grabbed the fifth comedy lead actor spot from Kelsey Grammer (“Frasier”). The other three are TV movie star Tony Shalhoub (“Mr. Monk’s Last Case”) and limited series actresses Anna Sawai (lead; “Shōgun”) and Fiona Shaw (supporting; “True Detective: Night Country”) who displace Michael Douglas (“Franklin”), Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”), and Andrea Riseborough (“The Regime”) respectively.

Showtime’s “The Curse” is one of the most unique TV entries of the past year. The acclaimed drama series from Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie follows a newly married couple (Fielder and Oscar-winner Emma Stone) who host an HGTV show trying to conceive a child while navigating a curse.
The show’s tone and style, a satirical black comedy, makes for extraordinary viewing and while it is classified as a drama for awards purposes, it transcends genre classification in reality. Critics agree, this is one of the most unique and colorful TV shows out there.
Richard Roeper (Chicago Sun-Times) explained: “To its credit, ‘The Curse’ never takes its foot off the pedal, to the point where we’re absolutely sure Whitney and Asher are going to crash and burn — yet we’re still not prepared for the inspired lunacy of the fate that awaits them.”

Stand-up comedy is a public performance that gives the illusion of intimate spontaneity. This is equally true of reality television, so it’s natural that a master at the former would try his hand at the latter. Such is the origin story of “Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show,” a self-reflexive — and self-explanatory — HBO project that follows Carmichael’s award-winning special “Rothaniel” with an even more extended look at the comic’s later-in-life coming out and its effect on his closest relationships. Just don’t call the series unfiltered. “This is not truth,” a friend reminds Carmichael, and by extension, us. “This is narrative.”
“Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show” is not the first time a professional jokester has blurred the line between entertainment and actual life. Carmichael himself cites “The Truman Show” as an inspiration; more recently, works like Nathan Fielder’s “The Rehearsal” and Bo Burnham’s “Inside” have called attention to their own artificial nature,...

Niecy Nash-Betts, who recently won an Emmy for her role on Netflix’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” has signed on to host the Los Angeles portion of next month’s Writers Guild Awards. The 2024 event, which was pushed back in the wake of the Hollywood strikes, will take place on Saturday, April 14 at the Hollywood Palladium.
“A good writer is an actors’ greatest gift,” Nash-Betts said in a statement. Added L.A. awards exec producer Hugh Fink (“Saturday Night Live”): “Niecy Nash-Betts is the dream host for this year’s WGA Awards. Her brilliant performance in ‘Dahmer’ – as the courageous woman who helped take down a serial killer who ate his victims – is surprisingly a lot like negotiating with the AMPTP.”
Benn Fleishman of Avalon Harbor Entertainment is also a producer for this year’s WGA Awards in Los Angeles. Additional presenters scheduled to appear at this year’s L.

As “The Office” showrunner Greg Daniels looks to create a new series in the world of Dunder Mifflin, he’s tapped “Nathan for You” co-creator Michael Koman to help lead the project, sources tell Variety.
Daniels and Koman would serve as co-creators of the prospective series, which has not yet been greenlit to series and is still in development at Universal Television. It is not a reboot of “The Office” but is set in the same universe, meaning it would likely be set in a different office setting with all new characters.
Daniels opened a development room in January 2024 to begin working on the new iteration of the hit NBC mockumentary sitcom, which ran from 2005 to 2013 and was adapted from Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s British series of the same name. Exclusive: As Greg Daniels continues to work with a group of writers on what could become an expansion of The Office universe, Nathan For You co-creator Michael Koman has emerged as a leading creative voice. Some solutions to the housing crisis are more creative than others. For a group of artists in Providence, Rhode Island, that idea was put to the test when they infiltrated and inhabited a hidden alcove in their local mall for four years — a symbol of gentrification they repurposed into a decidedly anticapitalist communal space. The aptly named “Secret Mall Apartment,” directed by Jeremy Workman and executive produced by Jesse Eisenberg, is a thoughtful celebration of the DIY artistry behind that experiment, but only a so-so investigation of it.
Like a lot of great plans, this one was barely planned at all. After he and three of his friends decided to see who could pull off living inside Providence Place Mall the longest, Michael Townsend, drawing on a random memory of the building’s construction four years earlier, recalled a “nowhere space” where he and his cohort might find shelter: a...

Ari Aster’s fourth feature as a director is officially a go at A24. Aster is set to direct “Eddington” with A24 both financing and producing.
The film will reunite Aster with his “Beau Is Afraid” star Joaquin Phoenix alongside a cast that also includes Pedro Pascal, newly minted Oscar winner Emma Stone, “Yellowstone” star Luke Grimes, as well as Austin Butler, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, and Clifton Collins Jr.
Production kicks off on “Eddington” this week.
The official logline says only that “Eddington” follows a small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations. There have been rumors that the film is a Western set during the pandemic in which a couple runs out of gas in the small town of Eddington and are greeted warmly, only for the town to turn nightmarish by nightfall.

Ari Aster has assembled a star-packed cast for his next film Eddington, which begins production this week.
Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone and Austin Butler are among the performers set to star in the feature that A24 will finance and produce. Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward and Clifton Collins Jr. are also set to appear in the movie that does not yet have a release date.
Aster is directing Eddington from his own script that centers on a small-town New Mexico sheriff with lofty aspirations. Two-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Darius Khondji will lens the title that Aster and Lars Knudsen are producing through their company Square Peg.
A24 has released all three of Aster’s previous feature films, beginning with 2018’s Hereditary and continuing with 2019’s Midsommar and last year’s Beau Is Afraid. This will mark the sixth collaboration between A24 and Square Peg.

Ari Aster has assembled an all-star cast for his next film, “Eddington,” recruiting Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward and Clifton Collins Jr.
A24 is financing and producing the movie, which — based on Aster’s track record — we can only assume will give us nightmares. Plot details are kept under wraps besides the fact that the film “follows a small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations.”
“Eddington” starts production this week, with Aster writing, directing and producing alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Two-time Academy Award nominee Darius Khondji is the director of photography.

Emma Stone is one of the best actresses in Hollywood, and any doubts regarding this stood clear when she won the Academy Award for Best Actress at the 96th Academy Awards. Her stunning performance as Bella Baxter in the 2023 movie Poor Things won her the second Academy Award of her career; she won her first Academy Award for the 2016 movie La La Land.
Stone has assimilated a huge net worth over the last two decades of her acting career. While the bulk of her net worth is all thanks to her career as an actress, she also owes some of it to the properties she has flipped.

The strike-delayed nominations for the 2024 Writers Guild Awards are out. Check out the list below.
In a flipping of the script this season, the WGA Awards will be held on April 14 – more than a month after the Academy Awards.
As always, the Writers Guild of America has different eligibility requirements than the Movie Academy, so some awards-season favorite scripts are missing from today’s nominations.

The nominees for the 2024 Writers Guild of America Awards are finally here.
The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America East (Wgae) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in screenwriting, television, new media, news, radio/audio, and promotional writing for 2023.
Oscar-nominated screenplays for “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “May December,” “Past Lives,” “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Oppenheimer” were expected WGA nominations. However, surprise nods for “Air,” “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” and “Nyad” prove the WGA Awards still have a few tricks up their sleeve. If you’re wondering, “Poor Things” was not eligible because it wasn’t produced under a WGA contract, per a source close to the project.
Despite now taking place one month after the Academy Awards, the WGA nominations still carry weight this season — and could be a deciding factor for final Oscar voting. As IndieWire’s Anne Thompson predicted,...

Uncut Gems is widely considered a revival movie for Adam Sandler who was struggling with critically panned films. The Safdie brothers, Josh and Benny, directed the anxiety-inducing thriller after their earlier critically acclaimed movie, Good Time. The brothers have since had a fallout and Josh Safdie has been struggling to land a movie while Benny Safdie’s career is thriving. According to reports, Josh has turned to Sandler to save his rocky career.

Adam Sandler is continuing his Safdie collaborations with another Netflix project.
While the “SNL” alum and Happy Madison mega-producer is set to star in the Safdie Brothers’ upcoming untitled sports memorabilia Netflix movie, Josh Safdie will direct Sandler in a stand-up comedy special for the streamer. The as-yet untitled special will be Sandler’s second for Netflix after his 2018 Emmy-nominated “100% Fresh.”
Sandler’s Netflix deal, which has been extended twice, produced films like “Leo,” “You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah,” “Hustle,” and two “Murder Mystery” movies. Sandler also stars in “Spaceman” alongside Carey Mulligan and Paul Dano; the feature will be released on Netflix March 1.
The Safdie Brothers have marked a creative split as of late, with Benny Safdie co-writing the Sandler-fronted sports movie but stepping away as co-director. Josh Safdie will solo direct.

New quotes from The Curse creator Benny Safdie revealed fans' suspicions about the series' twist ending may have been warranted.
The A24-produced Showtime series ended spectacularly with Nathan Fielder's Asher Seigel seeing the final result of the show's titular curse and being sent drifting through space. At the same time, his TV host wife, Whitney (played by Emma Stone), goes into labor with their first child.
This shocking (and bizarre) finale sent audiences into a frenzy of confusion, with theorizing abound amongst the show's fan base.

Do movie stars exist anymore? The consensus seems to be no. Or, at the very least, new ones aren’t being created past the generation of roughly Leonardo DiCaprio. Which is a shame, because if movie stars were still allowed to thrive in Hollywood now, Emma Stone would certainly be one of them.
After several supporting roles in films like “Superbad” and “Zombieland,” Stone practically burst onto the scene in “Easy A,” her first leading role. As the sharp-tongued but likable teen protagonist in Will Gluck’s comedy, Stone defined her star image immediately: an everywoman appeal mixed with pure charisma, a playfully snarky disposition, and a genuine talent at comedy that makes her pop off the screen. From that film and her Golden Globes nomination, the then 22-year old Stone quickly moved from the teen comedy world into broader pastures, though the projects she chose didn’t always match her potential.

Fans of Nathan Fielder know how a little bit too good he is at making you feel uncomfortable. The comedic actor has an incredibly dry delivery with the bravery and commitment of someone like Sasha Baron Cohen, whom Fielder has actually worked with on Who is America? Fielder’s Comedy Central show, Nathan For You, brought his illustrious brand of cringe comedy to a grand audience, and HBO’s The Rehearsal took it to a new level. Recently, Fielder has partnered with Benny Safdie to try his hand at more scripted narrative comedy with the abstract Showtime series The Curse, which paired Fielder up with Emma Stone.
The response to The Curse has been naturally divisive. However, one vocal supporter of the show, whom people may not have seen coming is Christopher Nolan. According to Variety, the Academy Award-nominated director of Oppenheimer recently moderated a Q&a for the show...

Filmmaker Christopher Nolan has praised the show ‘The Curse’ and said that it’s unlike anything he has ever seen on television before.
Nolan was seen moderating a panel for ‘The Curse’, the Showtime series that stars Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone.
In the panel that the cable network shared on YouTube, Nolan praised the show, saying: “It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen on television before. I think the show is incredible.”
Nolan said that this type of show could only be made now during the “anarchy of the streaming era” and that “tone is the star” of the series — comparing it to the first season of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks.
“Congratulations on an incredible show that’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen on television before. There are so few shows that come along that genuinely have no precedence,” Nolan said as the panel ended, reports deadline.

Christopher Nolan is one of the biggest theatrical distribution purists you’ll find in Hollywood, but he still knows a good TV show when he sees one.
Nolan recently moderated a Q&a with his “Oppenheimer” star Benny Safdie and Nathan Fielder, co-creators and stars of the acclaimed Showtime series “The Curse.” In a new video of the panel released by Showtime, Nolan praised the dark real estate satire as one of the most exciting television projects in recent memory.
“It’s an incredible show,” Nolan said. “It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen on television before.”
Nolan compared “The Curse” to landmark television events like David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks” for its ability to transcend conventional television boundaries and tell a genre-bending story with its own distinct format.

Some shows meet their moment immediately; some slowly build a following, maybe even creating a cult audience. The latter might be the case for “The Curse,” the wild, subversive, uncomfortable, and audacious new Showtime/Paramount+ series. It came out in November, but with episodes arriving only week by week, it’s slowly been building an audience and a word-of-mouth following. And it should as it comes from actor/producer Emma Stone, actor/comedian/filmmaker Nathan Fielder, and filmmaker/actor Benny Safdie, one half of the Safdie Brothers directing duo.

Before Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two takes over IMAX screens––and well-timed with the awards run for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer––Warner Bros. is re-releasing Tenet in 70mm and IMAX screens for one week only. Considering WB initially unveiled the film in 2020 during the throes of the pandemic, we imagine many didn’t get a chance to see it in this format, though it still made over $360 million worldwide. Now set for a Feb. 23 week-long release, they’ve now released a new trailer and poster to celebrate.
Hanna Flint said in her review, “No line in recent cinematic history has felt more fourth-wall-breaking than the one uttered by Clémence Poésy’s character in the first act of Tenet. “Don’t try to understand it,” her scientist character tells John David Washington’s Protagonist as he comes to grips with a new type of radioactive weapon. “Feel it.” It’s...

The stars came out for Kate.
Kate Berlant’s one-woman show with the one name title opened at the Pasadena Playhouse on Jan. 21, and the night featured a parade of bold-faced names in the 91101. Checking out the 75-minute production — written and performed by Berlant with direction by Bo Burnham — were Maya Rudolph, Molly Shannon, Olivia Wilde, Kumail Nanjiani, Vanessa Bayer, Bob Odenkirk, Brie Larson, John C. Reilly, Nathan Fielder, Billy Eichner, Lionel Boyce, Abbi Jacobson, Rachel Sennott, Jordan Firstman, Reggie Watts, Paul Downs, Vanessa Bayer and Chelsea Peretti. Also, there was the show’s director Burnham with rumored girlfriend Phoebe Bridgers.
The stars responded to the show, which “explores the events of her life that have brought her to this moment,” with a standing ovation. Before that, however, they lined up for pics on a step-and-repeat that featured oversized images of Berlant in various poses (seen above). Drinks and light...

Start watching Citizen Weiner and you may find its subject, Zack Weiner, looks familiar. A brief opening montage provides a sampling of what’s to come in Daniel Robbins’ documentary: late-night talk show hosts cracking wise about something Weiner did, various people with shocked expressions, and a conveniently blurred video at the center of it all. Those who can recall 2021’s New York City Council election might remember Weiner as the primary candidate who had a Bdsm video of himself leaked to the press during. It’s a recent blink-and-you’ll-miss-it piece of pop-culture history, from a time when most of us stayed inside and online, and Citizen Weiner does little to make this part of the past worth revisiting.
Introductory interviews provide a bit of background. Weiner is a writer and actor who starred in Robbins’ past features, including the 2018 horror film called Pledge that Weiner co-wrote. With the...

It took a lot of time — and hair — to transform Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough into Bigfoot. They spent several hours in the makeup chair to don the elaborate prosthetics needed to play two of the eponymous creatures in “Sasquatch Sunset,” a surreal comedic drama that premieres on Friday at the Sundance Film Festival.
“We would arrive — and I would have to shave everything on my face — and then it was two hours in the chair applying hair, makeup and fur, and then climbing into a costume that was specifically made for us,” said Christophe Zajac-Denek, who also stars in the film as one of the mythical beasts, at the Variety Studio presented by Audible. “Tons of fur.”
David Zellner and Nathan Zellner directed “Sasquatch Sunset,” which is vaguely described as “a year in the life of a singular family.” The film, which contains no dialogue (unless you speak Sasquatchese...
